MI MakeFontSymbol

1999-08-24 Thread David Wilson

In a MapBasic prog I'm using the command 'MakeFontSymbol' to set a
symbol style but find that once in MI5.5 although it recognises the
style ie Mapinfo Miscellaneous and symbol number, all the symbols have
become squares in the symbol style selection menu. The same happens if
any other font was chosen.
Any ideas why

MI Printer Servers

1999-08-24 Thread TGM Alexandroupoli

Hi everyone,

does anybody use or know anything about Print
Servers and whether they can improve speed or not? I 'm using MI 4.5 on
Windows98, trying to plot on a HP750C.

Someone told me about an HPGL command (or
something) that is called Negative Motion, and suggested to use it in a batch
file before sending anything to the plotter but didn't know exactly HOW to use
it. Does anyone out there know anything more specific than that?

Thanks in advance for all the answers

MI MODIFYING PROVIEWER 5.0

1999-08-24 Thread Tony

Hello List,

I am seeking a solution to the following:

I am using the free MI ProViewer 5.0. When the program starts or when you
choose FILE > OPEN TABLES OR WORKSPACES, the dialog box opens with the
default values for Look in: ProView and Files of type: MapInfo Tables and
Workspaces.

I would like to modify these defaults to Look in: a different folder and
Files of type: MapInfo Tables.

Any suggestions that would get me to this goal.

Thank you,

MI GIS Positions in Dallas

1999-08-24 Thread Bruce Blais

We are currently in a project that requires mapping large amounts of data
and need two production MapInfo technicians. These are entry level
positions and require only basic MapInfo skills. Processes, procedures and
documentation have all been developed. Candidates will have to operate
MapInfo 4.5 and 5.0 systems, including MapBasic routines already developed,
to produce a variety of maps showing the results of drive test data
measuring radio coverage. These are temporary positions that are expected
to last 4 to 5 months They are located in the Richardson-Plano area of
Dallas.

Please send your resume to [EMAIL PROTECTED] in electronic format if

MI Buffers

1999-08-24 Thread Lovett Alan

Hello fellow listers,
Could anyone tell me if it is at all possible to set a buffer so that it
only extends out from one side of a polyline. I am trying to set buffers of
varying sizes along watercourses. The buffer distances I am setting are
different on opposite sides of the watercourse hence the desire to be able
to set different distances.
Can it be done ???

RE: MI Clear custom label

1999-08-24 Thread Sue Port

Phil & Pierre,

To aviod the confirmation dialog you could use:

Set Map Layer {layer} Label Default

where {layer} is the number of the layer in the mapper (1=topmost layer).

To do all the layers in mapper put the command in a for-loop. For example:

Dim i As SmallInt
For i=1 to MapperInfo(FrontWindow(),MAPPER_INFO_LAYERS)
Set Map Layer i Label Default
Next

Hope this helps.

Sue.

RE: MI Thematic Maps

1999-08-24 Thread Mark Knudsen

I am not sure if this is exactly what you are after, but a technique I have used is to
use a large circle (or whatever you like) as the symbol and then label the point with
the number of (in your case) dealers. The symbol colour can be thematic as you like,
but the label overlays it with the number (turn on Halo if this makes it easier to
read)

Hope this helps

MI pattern printing irregularities

1999-08-24 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Hi All,

Has anybody else had problems printing patterns with v5.5?

If I select a sparse dotted pattern with a transparent
background, when printed the dots are are big, about .5mm
across.

If I take the same layer keep the same dot pattern and change
the background to opaque white, when printed from one
workstation, the dots are so fine and close together they form a
solid light colour; when printed from another workstation the
dots are sparsely spread out (like they're supposed to be) and
about .1mm across.

Both workstations are running NT v4sp4, MI 5.5 with the most
current Adobe PS driver (v5.1 (210)). The plotter is an HP 1055cm.
The problem is duplicated when printed to an HP 4ML LaserJet
(driver: MS PostScript v4.00)

Anybody else experience something like this?

will sum,

-matt

Deleting replicate data points in MI 5.0 table

1999-08-24 Thread Tim Haeusler

Hi MI People,

I have what I thought to be a simple problem. I have a table in MI5.0 that contains
44000 location points with just a one column tag.

My problem is that there are 14,000 points which are replicated in the data. Same
tag-same point. (The data originates from a poorly maintained Oracle data base and
came to me in Genamap format and was converted using GEMI)

I am relatively new to MI (and to this mailing list) and have searched all help and
played extensively with the SQL Select options, exported data to Acess97 , deleted
replicates and tried to import the tables back in, joined the imported tables to the
original data tables etc., but cant seem to get anything to work.

I'm sure I'm missing something very simple (apart from manually deleting 14,000 points
from the browser window), I would appreciate if someone could tell me what this is!

Thanks

Hi Fran,

sometimes, I've seen this very same message when attempting to print
to AdobePDF. I find out that the name of the layout window was not compliant
with file name syntax. What I mean is that a layout window named "Layout:2"
will cause an error because of the ":". Since the ":" is not accept to name
a file in the DOS environment, I presume it's the same rule that apply to
AdobePDF.

To elude this problem, I simply change the name of the window. Personnaly, I
use a little application but you could use this line in the MapBasic window:
Set Window FrontWindow() Title "Layout2". Just make sure that the window you
want to print is the active one before switching to the Mapbasic Window.

I hope this answer may be of some help...

MI Portugal Street Data

1999-08-24 Thread HR and Associates, Inc. / Eric Frost

I received a couple of responses about Portugal street data:

1) from Luis Suárez-Carreño

"You should get in touch with GEOGRAF, Sistemas de InformaÇao Geográfica,
Lda. They are MapInfo distributors for Portugal and Spain. They have a lot
of Portuguese data. Its Director is Mr. Raúl Mota, and this is his e-mail
address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Phone: 351 1 848 1314."

I talked to them and they have two sets of data for Lisbon and Porto -- one
from TeleAtlas and a less expensive one with fewer attributes but supposedly
of equal quality... both sets are at 1:10,000

and 2) from Norm Genier [EMAIL PROTECTED]

"There are street maps of a 1:300,000 scale available for MapInfo.
They are called Cartique Mapping.

Portugal is bundled with Spain, Andorra and Gilbraltar and the
whole region is priced at $ 4,375. I will enquire if Portugal can be
separated."

Thanks folks! MapInfo-L is the best!

MI Rotate Map for Un-Split View of Pacific Ocean

Hey Everyone,

I need a world map that has the entire un-split view of the Pacific Ocean.
I downloaded the mapcent shareware off of the web site, and created the map

references. Does anyone know about any general techniques, software etc
that will automatically convert the lat and long? I want to be able to
plot points, lines etc on the map and have the lat and long automatically
converted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MI Grid or polygon Maker ?

1999-08-24 Thread Serge Dumoulin

We've tried GRIDMAKR.MBX however it doesn't allow us to create polygons that
are small enough (distance from lines = 135 feet) for (as an example) the
State of Florida does anyone know of an application that could generate
these with the above tolerances?

Re: MI window redraw ..

1999-08-24 Thread Scott England

Thanks Dmitry,
I tried the "set map redraw" method and that did not seem to do the trick,
let me explain my problem ...

I'm creating a map using automation through a VB DLL I have created. When I
output the map to a JPEG using the 'save window' command all the layers are
'mixed up'. By that I mean some parts of one layer are below another layer
but above it in other areas (wierd).
When I do the whole process manually from within MI the output is fine. I
figured if I could re-draw the window within my code, then it would solve
the problem, but no joy so far
I would rather avoid using API calls if I can,

Scott..

Re: MI window redraw ..

1999-08-24 Thread Dmitry Bogdanov

Hello Scott!

>Is there a mapbasic command (or some other way in MB) to force a map window to
>re-draw ?

For Map window, you can use Set Map Redraw On statement. If this is not sufficient (as
it was
in my recent case with Integrated Mapping) - use InvalidateRect and UpdateWindow APIs:

Declare Function InvalidateRect Lib "user32" Alias "InvalidateRect" (ByVal hwnd, ByVal
lpRect, ByVal bErase As Integer) As Integer
Declare Function UpdateWindow Lib "user32" Alias "UpdateWindow" (ByVal hwnd As
Integer) As Integer

To obtain hwnd handle of the window you want to redraw - use
WindowInfo(MapInfoWindowID, WIN_INFO_WND)

In call to InvalidateRect, supply 0 for both lpRect and bErase parameters.

MI Fw: Printer Servers

1999-08-24 Thread TGM Alexandroupoli

Hi everyone,

does anybody use or know anything about Print
Servers and whether they can improve speed or not? I 'm using MI 4.5 on
Windows98, trying to plot on a HP750C.

Someone told me about an HPGL command (or
something) that is called Negative Motion, and suggested to use it in a batch
file before sending anything to the plotter but didn't know exactly HOW to use
it. Does anyone out there know anything more specific than that?

I have a mapbasic application designed for a Archaeology excavation
project where I need to be able to select artefacts from my tables based on
level and artefact type for display.
My problem is that I have about 50 different artefact types and about
10
different levels. I tried to create a SQL query which listed all of the
artefacts I wanted but mapinfo coughed saying the the SQL was too complex.
It appears that there is maxium number of AND or OR operators you can have
in the SQL query. So I split my SQL query into several querys with no more
than 20 operators and then I cannot find a way to add to an existing
selection except to use a couple of temporary tables and the Insert Into
command. This works but is painfully slow.

Does anyone know of a simple way to add to an existing selection?

thanks

MI External database connection

1999-08-24 Thread Kim Greenham

Hi out there,
I read with interest the recent query put by Jacqueline about connecting to
an Access database as I have a similar question. Does MI 4.5 have the
ability to 2 way link to Access97 so that changes made in either application
are reflected automatically in real time in the other application?, or do I
need a more recent version of MI?
I would also like to throw another problem into the list group to see if the
way I have handled it is the most efficient.
I have a MI layer of property location numbers as symbols with an auto label
of LOC_NO in a map window. I wish make a selection of some of these location
numbers and to then load Property owner and address info stored in Access as
additional labels into the map window.
The way I have tackled this was to save my subset of Location numbers as a
MI table, open the Access table as an ODBC link, run an SQL on the 2 tables
using LOC_NO as the common field, save the new query as another MI table,
open it then run the auto label. I guess I just found this a bit cumbersome.
I need to set this up so that others less familiar with MI can run this
routine simply and repetitively. (I thought I would do this as a macro
within the MapBasic window but I would need to standardise file names as I
do not have the knowledge to set up file request/save dialogs- yet! The
learning curve stretches out before me like the path to Mt.Everest!)
Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

MI transperent pattern

1999-08-24 Thread Jure Ravnik

Hi, list,

I have a wierd printing problem. I'm running NT40 & MI 5.01.
In my map I have a raster and a region over it. In layer control/display
I set that the region is filled with a pattern and there is no background.
When I look at my map in map and in layout windows everything is OK.
I can see the raster through the pattern.

But when I print the layout (on HP deskjet 1100C) the pattern is no longer
transperent. The raster is not printed. The spaces in the pattern are white.

What's wrong?

RE: MI self-crossing polygons

1999-08-24 Thread Mapmail

Hi !

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have tried out all the small check's and tester's and demo's, but they did
actually not fix my problem.
However, MapInfo 5.5 did. I tested it yesterday and there was no problem in
combining. The combine was performed fast and accurate. Perfect.

Thanks for the help everyone !

Re: MI MBO - what?

Also if the program contains no Main() subroutine. Make sure that any
functions or subs you declare are actually contained in the program, and
that you have a sub main. Then things should work fine!

Access and MI

1999-08-24 Thread Jacqueline Sloggett
Title: Access and MI

Hi Everyone,

A request for help with external databases.  The problem I have is that I have an external database in Access which I would like to be able to associate with a mappable MI table.  I can update the area column in the external database with information from my table in MI, however what I would really like to be able to do is to select a record in the external database table and be able to find the selection in the Mappable table.  Ie. how you select a record in a browser and can then find the region etc it refers to in the map window.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

cheers
Jacqueline.
