MI Automatic Column Update
Does anyone know of a way to automatically update a column in MapInfo? What I am doing is connecting to an Access database via the power of ODBC. I want to combine the values of three fields to make a unique ID. e.g. 1 N50 SE would become 1N50SE etc. I tried doing it in Access, and it did not like it at all. Any Ideas? Grant Do You Yahoo!? RE: MI Drivetime Analysis Packages
Dryden technologies sell a Software package called MarketDrive, built by MapInfo in Australia. It allows market catchment analysis and routing. There is also no need to build networks for the software as this is done for all of Australia. There is no reason why data couldn't be put into the system for other countries if the data existed in a good format. For Australia it is basically install, run, point and click and it will return either boundaries or routes based upon your settings. don't hesitate to ask for more info. best regards Mark Pollard Senior Consultant Information Services DRYDEN TECHNOLOGIES Ph:61 (2) 4229-3498 Fax: 61 (2) 4229-3930 Web: www.drydentech.com http://www.drydentech.com _ The information contained in this email communication may be confidential. I am presently doing vehicle tracking, but would like to add this kind of capability to my system. What I don't yet know is what form I need to collect data in to make it useful for either of these products. As we are in Asia, there isn't much in the way of information on roads, so we have been driving around with GPS units in vehicles, logging the data then "joining the dots" to make roads. Obviously there is more to it than that. Do we need to collect other attributes? I can imagine that road type, speed limit, road names, etc, etc, might be useful, or maybe even necessary. Is there some sort of generic list of data that needs to be collected in order to make it useful for drivetime analysis? I'm also unsure of what format it should be put into MapInfo (to keep it on topic). I could sign up for either of these packages straight away, but would rather collect enough data first in a format that would work generically with any drivetime analysis package so I could do some sort of comparison using our own data. Anyone working in this field know of resources where I could find more info? Any mailing lists on the subject? Re: MI Drivetime Analysis Packages
Hello David Most packages will be able to deal with a network even if it doesn't have any attributes (speed limit etc) at all. In that case you will of course need to assume the same speed everywhere, meaning shortest=fastest route. You should also make sure, that your data is correctly geocoded in terms of either lat/long or non-earth coordinates. Not all packages support lat/long, which your GPS data probably is? But anyway you can always convert lat/long into a local non-earth coordinate system (like UTM) using mapinfo. (RW Net supports lat/long) Road type are of course more convinient to use than speed info for each link and street names/road numbers are nice for labeling on maps (and very neede for making route descriptions), but they are not necessary from the beginning. Regarding mapinfo-format it should normally be (poly)lines and a few packages also support multi polylines. Lines should snap (=touch), but some packages accept "near-snap", that is a certain tolerance. (RW Net doesn't support multi-polylines or "near-snap", but can locate lines, which almost snap) And I doubt you will find any mailing lists on this subject, but this one is probably also quite good ? I've got a problem with some text objects. Someone has set up some text with label-lines of no-linestyle (no, don't ask me why) This is fine, as the lines never appear; unless, that is, you output them as WMF files, when they have a nasty habit of reappearing on the final print (but never the proof copy printed in-house- isn't that always the way!) My question is how do I reproduce this functionality using M_EDIT_PREFERENCES_PRINTER? I think the suggestion was that I should be able to still use the Windowinfo() to detect what the user has set in M_EDIT_PREFERENCES_PRINTER and then go off and load the appropriate layout, but I cant get this to work. Mapinfo still seems to return the orientation that has been set using page setup not the one set under Options/Printers. MI How to Unsusbcribe from MapInfo-L
For those of you who haven't seen what's posted on the bottom of every MapInfo-L mail message, or who didn't save the information sheet that was sent to you when you signed up, or who didn't bookmark the MapInfo-L Clearinghouse page, here's how you get yourself off the list. Send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and in the body of the message put: unsubscribe MapInfo-L See additional info at the MapInfo-L Clearinghouse site: http://www.directionsmag.com/mapinfo-l You will get a note confirming your request and subscription status. Once you do sign off you may still receive a few messages, but it should stop in less than a day. If you get a note saying that you are "...not a member of this list..." then it probably means that the address you signed up with is not the address you are currently using. In that case, just add the address that you want unsubscribed one the unsuubscribe line. Example: Suppose your address is now '[EMAIL PROTECTED]', but you were signed up as [EMAIL PROTECTED] To get this address off the list, send e-mail to majordomo and in the body of the message put: unsubscribe MapInfo-L [EMAIL PROTECTED] This has to be approved manually, so give me a day to get to it. As long as the real address resembles the address you want taken off, I'll approve it automatically. If they aren't even close, then I will send a note to the address being unsubscribed, and if there's an affirmative or a no response, that address gets removed. RE: MI Lack of mail!!
move list to a newsgroup In one sense I agree completely, newsreader software is much smarter about threads 'n such and much nicer to use. On the other hand, our firewall at work blocks the newsgroup ports (and no amount of pleading on my part will change it. I've tried). Also at my home ISP does not carry many newgroups and a fairly high volume one like MI would not be considered to due the low number of GIS people in my area. Web-based newsgroup access is more or less pointless from my viewpoint - you lose most of the usability, while putting up with ton's of slow downloading and fast animating ads. The only real gain here is the ability to search past posts, and browse without subscribing. A mirror situation could work though: those of us unlucky enough to be able incapable of using newsgroups could continue with email. my 2 cents. matt -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
