Subject: [MI-L] OT: ESRI geocoding

This is for some of the ESRI *geocoding* guru's

The question is

The data stream includes a *carriage return* / CR / 0x0D / #13 between the
Pre-directional [e w n s] and the street name [Main St]

Is there a way to add the carriage return to the STRIPLIST and/or SEPLIST
such
as:
STRIPLIST ,/ + 0x0d add CR to the list of space comma slash
Striplist \#13 where \ is the escape character for the # Striplist 0x0D
,() the CR space comma ( and )

or is the CR not even considered

I have been reading the ESRI doc from
http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.2/pdf/Geocoding_Rule_Base_Developer_
Guide.pdf

This is driving us nuts

If anyone has all the rules files [*.stn / cls / mat / pat /etc] to set
up the geocoding to work like MapInfo and include the Zip [for us it is
really a
3 character ESN zone] like the *us_addr.stn* if you would be willing to part
with it I'd really appreciate it. [email is below]

RE: [MI-L] help matching uscnty to uszip data

2006-10-27 Thread David Reid
But use caution. Zip Code boundaries do not observe political boundaries or
subdivisions such as a Town, City, County or State.

If you update a Zip Code boundary with the underlying County data, that data
will be overwritten if you inadvertantly update that Zip Code from a
neighboring County. This too is dependant on the location of the centroid of
the zip code polygon.

Add a column called county to the zip code table. Make the zip layer
editable, then update column county from table county. Each zip will then
have the associated county with it.

RE: [MI-L] GeoTracker and Garmin GPSMap76CSx

2006-10-19 Thread David Reid
Tony,
I'm still using a Garmin 12cx but I'm sure the communication protocols would
still be the same.

Although I'm not running MI 8.5, I recently received a new laptop and was
forced, kicking and screaming to leave Windows 2000 and finally accept
Windows XP AND the fact that my new laptop had no serial port either, so I
too had to get a USB/serial adapter.

At first, I had similar problems but mine manifested by making the pointing
device go berserk. I found that XP was recognizing my GPS as some kind of
Microsoft Ball Point pointing device. I don't recall the exact device name
and I just carried my laptop to the truck and tried to find this in Device
manager and reproduce the problem but I think what fixed everything else
eliminated that issue too.

My fix was quite simple and that was to find a usable COM port to assign to
my USB adapter/GPS, that was COM 6. You would accomplish this in the Windows
Device Manager. Then, just as with a normal serial port connection, open
Geotracker Options and select the appropriate COM port you set previously.
Just make sure that the version of Geotracker that came on your Mapinfo
install disc is version 3.2 or greater. The older versions only recognized
COM ports 1-4.

As far as the communications protocols, the USB connection is not dependant
on those, only the communication between Geotracker and your GPS. I'm
running Geotracker 3.2 and the only two protocols available are NMEA 0183
and Trimble TSIP. My Garmin 12cx has two or three NMEA protocols but no
Trimble and I presume yours would be the same. You may need to choose
different NMEA settings on your GPS until you hit on just the right one. One
of the NMEA protocols on my Gar 12, will cause very erratic behavior with
Geotracker.

Hope this helps,

RE: [MI-L] Shape files when brought into MapInfo

2006-10-18 Thread David Reid

Are you sure there's no map objects? Is it possible
they converted with a white border and fill or no border and
fill?

While the mapper window is active, open Layer
Control, and double click on the layer that's supposed to be populated with
objects, and see if there are any style overides available, if not, there's for
sure, no objects.

If this is the case, it's quite possible your problem could
be related to using the wrong projection when you converted the foreign data
(*.shp files)

[MI-L] GIS terminology; Was: MapInfo to Arcview with style intact

2006-10-12 Thread David Reid
While discussing converting Mapinfo data to Arview... As the world becomes
more familiar with GIS, it's obvious in my area that ESRI appears to be
leading the way in that, everyone involved with GIS at the basic desktop use
level refers to shape files when requesting any data.

Would like to request a copy blah blah blah of your shape files...

When submitting your boundary shape file...

Can we get a copy of your centerline shape file?

Outside of the fact, I know many of the people requesting this data are
using Arcview, many obviously think that GIS data and SHAPE files are one
in the same.

Is the term shape file become the defacto moniker for GIS, object or
spatial data?

Hi Tom!

The shape file format is not designed to retain map styles (or coordinate
system info for that matter).
Therefore, it is not even in theory possible to transfer the native styles
of MapInfo objects to a shape file.
However, when ESRI discovered that people were using shape files for GIS
data, they added a *.lyr file which is used as a template for object styles.
Similarly, a *.prj file was added in order to hold information on
projection and coordinate system.
So, if you would want to truly convert tab to shape, the converter should a
write a *.lyr file as well as a *.prj file along with the basic shape file
set.
But MapInfo and ArcGIS uses different color schemes, different line styles
and region fills. You would need to make some kind of translation table to
take care of that.
The same goes for the spatial reference. They use different definitions for
that as well.
But I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm only pointing out the some of the
considerations one has to make.
Do share it with the list if you find out something useful.

Regards, Mats.E

RE: [MI-L] Extracting Table information.

2006-10-09 Thread David Reid
A couple of solutions come to mind, but one requires you have a particular
application installed.

1) The easiest, most workable method comes with a big IF... IF you happen to
be an Ultra Edit text editor user, you can search within files specifing
only to search inside of *.WOR files and to search for just the table you're
looking for. Set the output to an editable window and you will have a real
working list you could copy, paste. The useful results can allow a mulitude
of possibilites.

2) You could use the Windows search mechanism, or at least you once could.
By searching for all instances of *.tab within the files of a specific
directory. I don't think you could just search within specific files.

3) I seem to recall, there may be some function you could right into the
Mapbasic Window within Mapinfo, one that would list all the workspaces where
your table is found.

Issues:

Object display: Polylines in our street file disappear if the mapper window

Can an application built on Map-X take advantage of the Mapinfo custom
MAPINFO.FNT symbol file, and MAPINFO.PEN line style file? If not, does
Map-X at least offer the default line styles available to Mapinfo?

Geoset file doesn't retain certain preferences, such as intial zoom level or

Can expression labeling be performed with Map-X? (ex:

RE: [MI-L] Line styles for roads

If I understand your issue, you don't need a special line style, you just
need to select a standard one that has a distinct outline, then change it's
width features from pixel to point, and to a high enough value to encompass
your street names.

Tip... Just because the highest value in the line width may be 6, doesn't
mean you can't specify higher, just enter 12 or 14 or 20 and your linestyle
will grow accordingly.

RE: [MI-L] multline labels

2006-09-13 Thread David Reid
Ahhh, but what if the low address range has a 0 on one side or the other
and you want to show the true low/high range?

In other words, you actually desire the minimum greater than zero

Thanks to Simon O'Keefe for help with this...

left$(str$(minimum(FROMLEFT,FROMRIGHT)),99*int(FROMLEFT0 and
FROMRIGHT0)) + left$(str$(maximum(FROMLEFT,FROMRIGHT)),99*int(FROMLEFT=0
or FROMRIGHT=0))

So, if:

FROMLEFT = 1
TOLEFT = 99
FROMRIGHT = 0
TORIGHT = 100

The above syntax will give you (1 - 100) instead as opposed to (0-100) when
using minimum alone.

Of course, the best thing here if you're gonna label with low and high range
very much (which I do on all my work as well). The best thing to do is add
a LOW and HIGH field in your table then label from that.

Then occasionally, use the above syntax to update your LOW column after
doing much addressing maintenance (if you do much of that).

Just my .2¢ worth :))

2006-08-29 Thread David Reid
As David Baker suggests, Diabuilder give you nice controls on aligning each
control, ie Static text, check boxes, user text boxes etc.

But if you're talking about right the text itself, I think Jacques Paris
discussed a trick for doing this but it's not the ideal results we may want
as there's just no real functions for that.

I think the issue I recall Jacques finding a cure for may have been in
output windows. To align text you can specify a mono space font like Courier
for instance, and forcefully right justify text in your output windows by
using spaces and trim statments.

Greetings list,

Does anyone have any tips, ideas or know of any functions to allow Right
alignment of StaticText controls in a dialog box.

At the moment it is by trial and error, and we all know how long it
takes to lay out a nice looking dialog.

RE: [MI-L] Copy - Paste in MapBasic

Title: Message

Would an external
database maybe be better for you? I perform, basically the same scenario
daily however, I do the extensive data management in an Access database
(changes, inserts and deletes). Makes it a bit easier to maintain customer
history tables and daily activity logs, both are also broght into
Mapinfo.

Naturally, I have to
refresh this customer database within Mapinfo if records are added or changed
but like you, I have some mapbasic apps to do this.

I am still learning Map Basic and
trying to write a program to copy a record in a row in one table and paste it
into a row in another table.

Here’s my scenario. Each week I
update changes in a telephone customer database. I get a file from my Service Center that has all the moves,
disconnects, and adds that have occurred in the previous week. I convert the
file into a MapInfo table and update my MapInfo Customer Locator program.

Example: On a number change I
presently select the telephone in the new table, hit ctrl C, and then select the
telephone number field in the old table and hit ctrl
V.
(A lot of repetitive key strokes)

The procedure I am striving for
would be; 1. Select the record in the first table, click on a pushbutton (to
copy the selection) Then 2. Select the record in the second table, click on
another pushbutton (to paste the copied record into the second
table)

I can build the program to create
the button pads etc. But I can’t seem to find any MapBasic command that is
equivalent to “Copy Paste”
Can anyone give me the Map Basic
Commands or Statements that would be equivalent to “Copy and Paste” action in
MapInfo?

Thanks, Tom Halbrook

RE: [MI-L] Mice

2006-08-25 Thread David Reid
Rodger,
In addition to Simon's suggestion (which I have seen work), I have also
found that every pointing device I've used and with a USB connection,
produced very unsatisfactory results when working in Mapinfo (not to mention
many other apps).

I use the PS/2 adapter to plug the USB pointing device into a PS/2 port and
for what ever reason, there is a big difference. Using USB, the scroll wheel
as well as simple mouse movements are... over emphasized for lack of a
better analogy.

So, if the motherboard of your PC or notebook, or docking station has a PS/2
port but you're using USB, you might giving the adapter a try.

Hi All,

I have just bought a flash new Logitech Trackball mouse, which works wonders

in all applications except MapInfo. As suggested by most trackball users, I
have set the mouse speed to slow, and then set the acceleration to med or
high which allows greater control at slow speed, but also able to shoot
across the page where necessary.

For some reason when MapInfo is the active window, the acceleration doesn't
work, which means I end up with a very slow mouse cursor all the time

Has anyone had a similar problem and managed to solve it?

Thanks in advance!

Hello-

Has anyone else
noticed that in MI 8.5, when you copy and paste an object in a map window, it
automatically zooms to the object that has been pasted? Previous versions
always did this when the user copied/pasted multiple objects, but this seems to
be a new "enhancement" -- and it's quite frustrating!

Is this an option I

SUM: [MI-L] Memory error converting DWG with Universal Translator

2006-08-05 Thread David Reid
Well, not really a SUM. No replies and no fix found but, I figure there's
always another way to skin a cat.

As the DWG would open in the Autodesk Trueview cad file viewer, but would
not open in Mapinfo or even Corel Draw, I suspected some newer file format
change that UT could not handle.

Found a DWG to DXF file converter at AnyDWG http://www.anydwg.com/ which
would read the DWG file and allow me to output it to DXF which I specified
an older file version.

This works quite smoothly. Converted the DWG to DXF's, and I have
re-imported the DXF's appling the needed transformation to my desired
projection and all is well with the world now :)

I found the limited evaluation version of AnyDWG at
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Misc__Graphics_To
ols/DWG_TO_DXF_Converter.html

Greetings list,

I've never in all the DWG conversions I've done, run across this problem. I
guess it could be a corrupt DWG file but it opens fine in the Autodesk
Trueview viewer.

Universal Translator keeps producing the following error with a dialog
entitled SmartHeap Lirbrary

Out of memory. Please free some memory, then choose retry.

I've rebooted the pc to make sure any rampant apps have cleared memory but I
still get this error message.

I've tried translating to both *.tab and mid/mif still no luck.

The drive partition this dwg is being converted on has 3.6 gb of free space,
the temp directory on another partition of nearly 1 gb of free space.

The last few lines of the mutlog read:

Anyone seen this before and found a fix?

Many thanks if you can help,

RE: [MI-L] Custom Symbols

2006-08-01 Thread David Reid
Title: Message

If this is what I
expect, you'll be happy to know, it's not a problem with Mapinfo, or even Adobe,
but you will need to change a setting in Adobe to display your graphics
asthetically.

I'm running Adobe
6.0, but I'm sure this would apply to Adobe Acrobat and other
versions.

While viewing any of
your PDF's, from the file menu click [Edit] / [Preferences] /
[General]

Select "Display"
from the list and look for the "Smoothing" area of the
dialog.

You should find
several check boxes that when applied will smooth text, line art and
images.

Depending on what
application you're viewing your PDF's with, the wording and location for these
features may be a bit different but should be in there
somewhere.

[MI-L] SUM: Sorting records by val of a character formatted column

2006-07-29 Thread David Reid
Title: Message

Many thanks Peter
and Greg. I had the syntax correct but wasn't structuring my query
properly.(using val() to tell the sort to numerically value the character
formatted numerals)

One cannot use an
_expression_ like this in the "Order by" field alone, but can by means of a
"derived" column in the "Select columns" box, then ordring by the derived
column.

This actually saved
an additional step I was taking in that I initially had queried out these parcel
"lots" by their subdivision name into a query browser, then was attempting
tosort that query. With the above solution, i merely added the "where
condition" to the cocktail thus selecting AND sorting the lots for only the area
I wanted in one swoop.

Thanks
again!

Dave,
I think you have found the right
method, but you might not be able to sort by an _expression_ directly, so you
would need to add the _expression_ to the list of columns to select and then order

Sounds like you have
a "Allow overlapping text" issue on one or more of your layers which is
preventing your labels from appearing.

By you manually
editing the lable, it becomes a custom label which in my experience, overides
the label preferences such as "Allow overlapping text"

Try enabling this
check box for the layer you need to label and see if that
works.

RE: [MI-L] Mapinfo and digitizers

2006-07-05 Thread David Reid
Title: Message

I would think your
tablet, regarless of its form factor, would be recognized by Windows as the
pointing device a digitizing tablet is basically.

So, if you install
this "roll-up digitizer" and Windows does recognize it (ie when you move
the stylus or puck around, your mouse cursor moves around) You're good to
go.

When in Mapinfo, the
stylus/puck will act just as your mouse does, but probably at a higher
resolution (that's what you want). To take advantage of your tablet further, tap
the letter "D" on the keyboard. This will tell MI to recognize the stylus/puck
as a digitizing tablet, thusly adding a new menu option to setup registration of
the active area of the tablet. But you only need this if you will be digizing
from a source laid over your tablet (ie a paper map).

[MI-L] Strange Find results geocoding in MI ProViewer

2006-06-27 Thread David Reid
Greetings list,

As a temporary solution to an unrelated Mapinfo issue, we're running MI
Proviewer on a particular workstation, Proviewer 6.0 btw.

Yesterday, on various addresses entered to the Find dialog, it started
geocoding some of these addresses as much as 1/2 mile from where the address
is known to accurately geocode otherwise.

Has anyone seen this before and found what causes this problem?

Thanks,
David Reid

RE: [MI-L] Strange Find results geocoding in MI ProViewer

2006-06-27 Thread David Reid
I should have added that within the Workspace being used, I have Inset
address from end of street set to zero as these are mainly rural streets
set to 0.001 mile addressing format.

Find Using Streets(COL1) Refine Using Communities(COL1) Options Abbrs Off
ClosestAddr Off OtherBdy Off Symbol
Inset 0 Distance Units ft Offset 15 Distance Units ft

When I plot the two addresses (that have come to our attention) in Mapinfo,
they geocode right where their supposed to. Thus far, all other addresses
that have been searched appear where their supposed to.

Additionally, the tables being used are maintained in MI 6.5, but the
Proviewer we're using is 6.0. I would think that would be an issue though.

Strange indeed
Dave

Are these addreses supposed to be near the start or end of a long rural
road? MapInfo's algorithm moves addresses near a road intersection back up
the road about 10% of the length of the segment. This keeps the locations
from bunching up on intersections in the cities, but it's not helpful in
the country. I think there's a preference setting for this somewhere.

RE: [MI-L] OT - DiaBuilder2000 File Association Problem

2006-06-20 Thread David Reid
This is by no means a solution, but possibly a better'n nuttin'
solution...

I don't know if XP has Open With in the right click dialog of Explorer. I
don't even remember if this is native to Win2000 or if it was an add on
tweak I found but. If that's available, and you don't find resolution a
better way, this would be better than having to dialog through menues to run

The *.prj file normally associated with DiaBuilder 2000 project files seems
to also be normally associated with other software and I keep having to fix
it with the Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File... to reset the
the file association to run DiaBuilder2000.exe with any *.prj file.

However, I can't get this to work from a WinXP normal user account. It
works fine for my admin account but not for the one I normally do
development in. The DiaBuilder icon doesn't appear in the program list, and
when I choose Browse and pick it, absolutely nothing happens. It won't
associate, nor does it give me an error.

This account can execute DiaBuilder2000.exe no problem, but I'm getting
tired of manually launching it instead of just double-clicking on the prj
file. Anyone else here using DiaBuilder2000 to build mapbasic dialogs
know how to fix this? Is it a Windows thing, or something peculiar to
DiaBuilder?

[MI-L] Clip region bloats PDF

2006-06-19 Thread David Reid
Greetings List,

I've never really noticed this before until tonight when I needed to email a
PDF to a client. The workspace happens to have a clip region set and I've
found this bloats the otherwise casual 28kb layout PDF to just over 1mb.

Ok, I fell back and punted and just clipped my own region in the cosmetic
layer. Doesn't look quite as pretty and I had to delete several dynamic
labels that still showed.

Is there some setting, or other solution around this PDF bloat when a clip
region is active?

MI v6.5 by the way.

Thanks,

Dave

Title: Message

I'm running an HP
1050c with no problems other than that mentioned by someone else, the
"transparent" "effect" of hatching. Although, I have found that even though the
"hatched" region styles we are allowed to use all appear to be similar, there's
some that print totally different than what you might
expect.

The only other
problem we've had was printing with a digital ortho, or USGS raster as a
basemap.

Other than that,
everything else is smooth.
I have printed both
via parrellel port, and via network. Printing across the network works
beautifly, plus, I can move the darn thing out from behind my desk. I hope to
soon be going with a wifi printer server... I hate cords and

I've tried adding

Greetings List,

Wondering if anyone using Flexible Map by Christian Singer

This sounds like a very enticing application but as with many MB based
applications, a demo is not available.

This is needed to rectify, adjust, manipulate or just !downright fudge! An
annoying non-earth file once it has been translated to a projected product.
(i.e. can adjust rotation, skew etc of a CAD file once converted into
Mapinfo).

I would appreciate hearing your comments gripes or insight on this utility.

Feel free to reply off list.

Sounds like you need
"Stylelist" by Dave Smith available at Directions Mapinfo tool
bin.

"The STYLIST utility
lets you select map objects by their display styles."

Works great on any
objects. For example, if you want to select all text of a certain size, and or
color OR, if you just want to select all text objects, uncheck all the check
boxes for a given attribute to select everything of that specific
type.

Hello All,

This is an odd one – I have received
a table containing about 3,000 sites. Approximately half of which have been
updated and half haven’t. The problem is that the data capture team doing the
updates have simply coloured the updated sites red and the left the unupdated
ones black – they haven’t added a column to the database
unfortunately.

As you can imagine manually
selecting all the red ones would be a pain as they are scattered amongst the
table. Is there anyway or any tool that can select all the “red” site
boundaries??

Told you it was a funny
one!!

Cheers!

Ibeleive this
should work...

to
updatecolumns for x,y cords of the end points of a plyline use
ObjectGeography()

ObjectGeography(1)
will give you the minimum x or the begining node x
ObjectGeography(2)
will give the minimum y
ObjectGeography(3)
the maximum x
ObjectGeography(4)
the maximum y

That will require
four columns unless to add some syntax to concantenateeach x,y into a
single column, but then you've also got to deal with column format if you do
that.

[MI-L] Using ObjectInfo to find plines with SMOOTH attribute turned on

Greetings List,

I have a map table giving me problems on another application and I suspect

Is there an Objectinfo() I query I could use to select any such polylines?

ie
ObjectInfo(Obj,2) would return line style, is there one to identify if
Smooth is turned on?

RE: [MI-L] Using ObjectInfo to find plines with SMOOTH attribute turnedon

2006-05-22 Thread David Reid
Yes, Jacques Paris pointed this out to me earlier I just haven't had time to
SUM.

Objectinfo(obj,4) will return a logical true or false T or F, true if
SMOOTH is applied, false if not.

This also identified 4 other very minor issues, 4 objects that were lines as
apposed to poly lines. I had not run Objectinfo(obj,1) to find that out, so
in a round about way, objectinfo 4 helped with that too.

Thanks everyone!

Dave,

You have actual provided your solution yourself ;-)

The keyword is OBJ_INFO_SMOOTH in an MapBasic application, and 4 when used
in MapInfo.

This will select all the records where the object has smooth turned on

Select * From MYTABLE
   Where Str$(ObjectInfo(OBJ, 4)) = T

Also note that smooth only refers to polyline objects. Other objects will
return an error.
For Frame and Text objects, 4 will refer to some other attribute of the
object.

RE: [MI-L] Long standing Pro problem with Copy - or is it me?

2006-05-07 Thread David Reid
This is a problem with Mapinfo as I too have this issue. And I have found it
to be a variable problem in that, sometimes, it takes longer for some
records to be ready to be copied than it takes others.

It is second nature for me now to do a very rapid, consecutive, tap tap tap
tap (yes, that's four taps) of the C when using ctrl+c for copy.

It is very frustrating. Especially for those times when it's just quicker to
manually copy/paste something as apposed to building a update query for
example.

I've often wondered what caused this, could it be a table with many many
deleted records? Nope, I've experienced the same problem on recently packed
tables.

Could the delay be a result of indexed records? Don't know!

But it is definitely an issue and one that's been a topic on the list
before.

If you'll watch your tool bar when you click on a record in a browser you'll
notice that until the Copy toolbutton becomes active, you can't copy that
record(s) and sometimes it is several moments before it becomes active.

I was chatting with Eric Blasenheim of MapInfo at last week's MapWorld
(which was very good this year) and mentioned one of my long standing
annoyances with Pro. When he mentioned he wasn't aware of the problem, it
made me think it is me?.

The problem is with Copy for which I always use Ctrl-C. I have found that
when copying text from a browser or the info window, the copy does not
always take. Now I know it's easy to mash a keyboard especially with a
Control/letter key combo, but I'm certain that this problem exists. Also, I
seem to recall someone else mentioning it on the list some time ago. Now I
always double tap Ctrl-C and that seems to work.

So, for those who use Ctrl-C to copy a lot, and subsequently paste... is
this a problem with Pro or my fat fingers/worn keyboard?

[MI-L] SUM: Signifcance of cursor pos in Mapbasic Window

2006-05-01 Thread David Reid
My thanks to Spencer and Jacques who both concur...

The execution of a command line in the Mapbasic window is performed entirely
and regardless of the location of the cursor within that line as long AS
LONG AS no parts of that line are selected. This would cause ONLY the
selected to be executed or attempted to be executed.

Thanks, Guys, some DWG CAD drawings I receive will have 30 or forty
individual layers, being able to place the cursor at the beginning of the
line for my converstion calls, then manually [Enter] + [Key DOWN] repeat,
allows me to keep up better, which line I'm on :)

If you hit ENTER on a line in the MapBasic window, MapInfo will execute that
line.

EXCEPT if you have block of text highlighted, in which case it will
execute that block of text.

So, it's theoretically possible to click in the MapBasic window,
inadvertently select a block of text (with a sloppy mouse button release),
hit ENTER without realizing it, and woops!

If you want a reason to hit the END key after clicking, that's a good one,
since hitting the END key will unselect any block of text already selected.
Otherwise, there's nothing to worry about.

Greetings list,

I've often wondered about this, and it may be considered a stupid question
but...

When issuing commands from the Mapbasic window...

And each line is a command in itself...

Does it matter WHERE in that line the cursor is active when the command is
executed?

I.E.
When converting non-earth files to projected files, after editing and
creating the commans in my text editor, I paste them to the mapbasic window,
click in the first command line, hit [End] to get the cursor at the end of
the line, then [Enter] to perform the command, and repeat this for every
line.

Something like:

Export Easement Into etc etc etc
Export Elevation Into etc etc etc

I was afraid that if the cursor wasn't at the end of a given line, it may
only execute up to the cursor and I'd never know it.

2006-04-06 Thread David Reid
Well, as I stated in the first paragraph of my comment:

Is it possibleto export and import a Windows registry key
using Mapbasic.
Maybe using MB to trigger a batch file to do so?

As I mentioned here, **if it is possible**, It would rely on Mapbasic having
the ability to run a dos batch file, a task which I've never tried.

Just thinking outside the box :)

Hi Dave et al,

Sorry for pulling this a bit askew, but I'm a batch file novice.
So could you pls tell me how do you import a .reg file with mb?

Normally when I upgrade my users, I use a saved .reg file and a .prf file to
restore settings. The .prf part is kind of easy but the .reg part I haven'
figured out how to automate...

For what it's worth.

Is it possible to export and import a Windows registry key using Mapbasic.
Maybe using MB to trigger a batch file to do so?

If so, you could export the user's current tools listing from the mapinfo
tree in the registry, when finished, import that branch back in. Of course,
you'd probably have to restart Mapinfo for this to actually work.

Never the less, I allways keep a back up of that branch as it holds the
utilty name, comments and wheather the mbx autoloads or not.

Hi Terry,

All menus are created independently of each other in the common area of
Pro. You can define any number of additional menus (within GDI limits) and
attach them anywhere in the current menu system: menu bar, existing standard
menus, existing shortcut menus, user defined menus etc.

So you don't delete standard menus by defining your own menus or replacing
the menu bar. All defined menus incl. standard menus are still defined and
ready for use as long as Pro runs (only menu items with an attached mbx
based handler sub will be removed automatically when the app closes).

The problem arises when several mbx's want to add menus to the singular menu
bar. The menu bar is NOT a saved GDI resource (like the menus), it only
references them. And unfortunately it's impossible to retrieve information
about its current state, so the only possible backstep is to recreate the
default.

Create Menu Bar As Default will recreate the standard menu bar, and all
menus added by mbx's to the MENU BAR will be lost. The menus themselves are
not lost, the menu bar just doesn't reference them anymore. This is why
adding your menus to the Tools menu instead of the menu bar makes sense,
because that'll ensure that your menus are restored (along with the Tools
menu) when you recreate the standard menu bar.

If it's a question of minimizing the standard menu bar, not just hiding
it, I'll recommend changing the initial menu bar this way (translated from
Danish, so the words may differ slightly):

Create Menu MapInfo As
Files as Files,
Edit as Edit,
Tools as Tools,
Objects as Objects,
Query as Query,
Table as Table,
Settings as Settings,
WinSpecific as WinSpecific,
Window as Window,
Help as Help

This
happens too in "draw" programs, Corel Draw for instance. If zoomed in too
close, the raster will appear to shift around as I digitize.

I
suspect it to be the dimensional size of the raster, and or its resolution. My
high resolution DOQQ's don't appear to jump around, however, I have a single
ortho that covers my entire county, 8-10meter resolution, 10's of thousands of
pixels wide (image width) and if I'm zoomed in too far with it, it will dance
the Jitter Bugg when I digitize or move a node.

A colleague rang today with an issue about Mapinfo
moving its vector layers as he zoomed in or out. The vectors were
overlayed over a very high resolution image, and moved as he used the mouse

One click out and the vectors were displaced 20m,

Another user was using the same image reprojected to

Any suggestions on a cause or even better on a

For

turn "Set ProgressBars Off" back to "On"?

For
example, here's a snippet of an MB I use to refresh a table I regularly

In

No! sorry not to be clear on this. The progress bars aren't
displaying, however, this process (as shown in my code) takes longer than if I

Furthermore, if I bring another program window into focus over MI, the
process in my example either stops (as indicated in the first part of this

Simply
open the jpeg in Mapinfo choosing to "display" rather than
"register".

Now
bring your layoutwindow into focus, select "Frame" from the tool bar and drag a
new frame in the layout and choose the mapper window containing your logo
jpeg.

You'll
need to fiddle with the zoom size of the graphic in the mapper window a bit, I'd
recomend turning off scrollbars too.

You're
new frame will probably have a border around it too and you may want to disable
that. With the new frame selected in your layout, simply select "Regions" from
the Options menu, and set the border to "N".

Not on a single polyline, not with the normal Mapinfo Label tool.

BUT... You can with LABELER.MBX I think it is maybe a remnant from MI 3.x?
Works good for cartogrpahic work but time consuming. It will place a text
object in the cosmetic based on your labeling expression for a given layer.
You then save the cosmetic objects to a real table if you wish to keep them.

I'm almost sure it can be found in the tool bin at Directions.

Thanks David,
For example, if I were to do an autotrace of a pre-existing polyline, it
would appear to be tracing the line exactly, but when I finish the line the
result will change to a series of straight lines
The red line becomes the straight-line black line. It doesn’t matter how
many nodes I add. It does the same thing when I autotrace. Autotrace should
come up with the same line, but it doesn’t. I don’t understand what the

what?

Mapinfo" to get to Access.

Using
the free BlueMarble Geotracker in Mapinfo, setup your geocoding table as normal
but then save it as a MS Access table in the database of your
choice.

This
"should" record your GPS tracking/geocoding into your Access table but... not so
directly as you'd still be piggybacking through Mapinfo.

Good
luck,
David
Reid

[MI-L] MI table versions

2006-02-22 Thread David Reid
Greetings list,

Running MI 6.5 and with regards to the native *.tab files.

What about a table of only polygons would generate a Version 6.5 as
apposed to a lower version as is many of my other tables (4.5, 3.0 etc)?
This table is being used with Mapx v4

I have a feeling it has to do with maximum number of nodes for a given
object I'm nowhere near the maximumns listed for MI 4.5 for example, was
1mil.

Could this be some other issue, maybe too many combined or grouped objects?

Thanks in advance,
David

Peter,
The
query yuo offered only returns 1 record "Region" from the 596 objects seen in
the browser.

Additionally, I selected all objects and fired off a "Disagregate"
command which added 16 objects. I saved this file to a dif name, opened the tab
file and it still says v650.

I
believe I'll try Uffe's suggestion of exporting to mif, change the version,
re-import and see if MI responds with some error.

You could try this select statement to see what kind of objekts you

  Select Str$(OBJ)

  Group By 1

  This should
return a list of the different type of objects in your table, and yes, it

Thanks for the feedback.

I exported the offending table to mif, changed !version 650 to 450,
imported, no warnings. However, I then saved this table as a new table,
checked that .tab file and the version reports 3.0

I have yet to review closer, what differences there are.

[MI-L] Poll: CAD-Computer Aided Dispatch and Mapinfo for 9-1-1 Centers (PSAPS)

2006-02-16 Thread David Reid
Greetings List,

First off, this is not a marketing survey, it is my attempt to learn what is
out there and in use, that might better work for my agency.

For those on the list who work in the 9-1-1 PSAP arena, I would like to hear
from those of you who use Mapinfo to manage your GIS layers for your
Computer Aided Dispatch which includes map display (9-1-1 CAD). I know
there's quite a few questions here, but I would certainly appreciate your
time if you can reply. This by no way scientific, just some of the initial
questions that come to mind. I'd probably have more if I thought about it
much longer :)

Pre-requisites:
-CAD mapper must read native MI tabs without conversion to some other format
(built in MI runtime, MapX, MapExtreme whatever).

-CAD mapper must automatically geocode the address feed when passed from
your ANI/ALI server either automatically, or by user mouse click to perform
task.

-As part of the requirement above, the streets table to be searched would
naturally be in the Mapinfo StreetInfo style or format and use of a second
bounding table of region or polygon data is required.

I'm looking for such information as:

1.Does your CAD have the ability to take advantage of displaying all Mapinfo
object attributes?
-line styles
-point object styles
-Mapinfo 3.0 compatible or custom symbols
-polygons fills etc

2.Does your CAD do dynamic labeling? And do you have control of specifying
zoom levels duplicates etc as in Mapinfo?

3.Does your CAD do expression labeling? (i.e.
[mycolumn1]+Chr$(10)+[mycolumn2])

4.Can you set zoom levels for individual layers?

5.Does your CAD allow you to perform searches of multiple tables of data as
you specify, and can you specify a bounding table if desired for each
searchable table?

6.If you search for an attribute such as a street by name, if that street
name is not found as a result of the user mis spelling the name, will your
CAD offer the nearest match or just respond in the negative?

7.Housing your mapdata: Do you keep all your mapdata viewed by the CAD
mapper on a server and if so, how many stations are viewing that mapdata and
do you have display speed issues? (i.e. Can your CAD handle viewing in
terms of panning, zooming labeling of sometimes numerous or dense mapdata
{this might be an urban area displaying street centerlines, numerous polygon
objects like building footprints; parks etc, numerous point objects such as
fire hydrants, landmarks etc)

8.Can you build a workspace, or geoset on one station and clone these
file(s) to other stations?
(Ex: Set map layer orders, zoom levels, labeling parameters, search
parameters on one station, then using Windows Explorer or other means, copy
these files to other stations.)

Or simply... Our CAD can handle anything that Mapinfo throws at it, almost
as if using Mapinfo itself. Our CAD functions just like Mapinfo with
regards to the display and searching of layers and data and attributes?

Many thanks in advance!

RE: [MI-L] Poll: CAD-Computer Aided Dispatch and Mapinfo for 9-1-1 Centers (PSAPS)

2006-02-16 Thread David Reid
Thanks for the feedback Rich, but am looking for just that, something that
is better than what we have while still working with Mapinfo.

We demoed one CAD that only accepted AV data and I just don't want the
hastle of worring about having to convert everything, not only that, but the
AV files consume so much more disk space. When I converted our 20+ layers
from Mapinfo into Arcview, I wound up with far more files, (ie Whereas MI
might only have 5 files for a table, when converted I came up with 7). I
really don't care WHY there is or isn't more, I simply want the same
integration I have now. I should have stated our current CAD works ok but
built on MapX 3.0 technology which I understand is not even supported
anymore by Mapinfo.

Further I should have specified our current CAD was designed, built circa
1992 and installed when we went online in 1994 and has not changed even
though we still pay an annual maintainence on it to keep it upgraded. But
that's a whole other story.

Thanks for your input,
Dave

This will probably sound like marketing...

I wrote a MapInfo MBX a few years ago that is used by 3 rural Wyoming
counties for E911 dispatch. Obviously it supports native MapInfo data,
labeling, styling, etc. But the thing that is unique is that it is
point based, as opposed to line based.

Most E911 software interpolates a point along a line segment. This
works reasonably well in urbanazied areas, but not so well in rural
areas. Point based addressing requires a more detailed data layer than
line interpolation, but also provides better results. Examples of
where point-based is better would include situations where addresses
are not sequential, (you have a house number that doesn't fit into a
linear range) or you have a house a long distance from the road on
which it addressed (a long driveway).

I'd look for E911 software that fits your community and your data
model. Whether it supports MapInfo or ESRI should be seccondary. It is
very easy to write a script to convert a MapInfo line layer to a ESRI
line layer, but it is impossible to convert a line layer to a point
layer, or a point layer to a line layer.

RE: [MI-L] TEST

2006-02-10 Thread David Reid
Nope, I still see your attachment, this time it is ATT00049.txt, if you
recall, the previous one was ATT00033.txt, both containing the footer which
appears in original List Posts and obviously something generated by a
counter (ie att00033, now att00049). As I see this occasionally with other
list posters, I first thought maybe it was some dingleberry left from the
user's mail server counting their emails but, as the attachment has the
List message footer in it, that doesn't sound right either.

Also, you might want to set your client to plain text instead of Rich text
as it still retains some formatting capability like HTML. Plain text just
plain doesn't :)

Other things you might check:

Make sure your addess book isn't attaching your business card (a .vcf file
a.k.a. vCard)

Make sure Outlook or an Outlook message rule isn't set to try to send any
replies including the original message as an attachment.

Now this is curious, suspecting this might be an Outlook or Microsoft
Exchange Server issue, I checked the email header on several emails I still
have cluttering up my Mapinfo Inbox, some several weeks or months back. I
looked through these and see I have several with this ATT000xx.txt file
attached.

Indeed the first few I looked at, those folks were on MS Exchange server,
but then I noticed some others using Lotus Notes, GMAIL and even a couple
people using a webmail client and some of those had this ATT attachment.
Not everyone, only a few.

Or, it could be someone else's Outlook tryin' to mate with my Outlook!

Subject: [MI-L] Creating Boundaries of streets

Hello again everyone!

I have yet another question!!
Is it possible to create boundaries with streets?
(I know I can do this with census tracts, but the streets I want to create a
boundary for are only partially within certain census tract, therefore the
boundary created by the Combine
will exceed beyond the boundary I actually need).

For example, If I have 4 streets: A, B, C and D, and I want to create a
boundary that encloses this area, how would I do this?

Thanks so much!

RE: [MI-L] Difference between Enclose and Convert to Region

2006-02-03 Thread David Reid
Thanks for the enlightenment Peter.

Peter pointed out to me that Enclose simply combines the process of
combine multiple polylines + convert to regions into one process
Enclose.

You'd think after working in MI for 6 years, I'd know that myself :)

Akua,

MapInfo has a functionality called Enclose that can be found in the Objects
menu. This will create regions from selected (poly)lines (and polygons)

RE: [MI-L] Can anyone help me??

2006-02-02 Thread David Reid
Blanca,

The host of the mapinfo emailing list has had some problems with their list
server, hence you may not have gotten a reply to your previous request.

Return to Directions website and to the Mapinfo Mailing list archive and
search by either your subject header or some of the contents of your
message. I forgot who it was, but a reply was posted to your question.

Assuming you are working in Mapinfo, the reply was to the effect that what
you need to geocode is already built into Mapinfo.

Regards,
David Reid

Hi Everyone!!!, My name is Blanca and I’m Peruvian.

Please, I need your help!!

I am planning to geocode using vector analysis formulas and I was wondering
if any of you have ever tried this.

Specifically, I need 2 programs:

a) A program that calculates the beginning and ending X,Y coordinates for a
set of lines (streets), like this:

  ||

  (X1,Y1) (X2,Y2)

b) A program that extrapolates the location of the address using the X,Y
coordinates and the direction of the line, plus an adjustment for left/right
side of the street.

Thanks a lot

RE: [MI-L] [MI - L] ctrl F Find Function Not Working????

2006-01-25 Thread David Reid
This sounds one of two possible issues,
1) make sure the table you wish to search has the appropriate column
Indexed. To check this, view the table structure for the table in
questions and make sure the check box for Index is checked for your search
column.

2) If the above is not the issue, it is likely that a separate MBX is
running which has disabled the Ctrl+F key sequence command.

[MI-L] Submitting MI tables to an Arcview user

2006-01-23 Thread David Reid
Greetings list,

I belive this has been eluded to before but I don't recall the consensus.

I have a user who has requested some mapdata and they only work in Arcview.

Can the native MI files which make up a given map table be converted *by
Arcview* or will I have to export everything to MID/MIF for them?

Thanks,
David Reid

RE: [MI-L] Submitting MI tables to an Arcview user

2006-01-23 Thread David Reid
Thanks Robert, but I should have specified
1) I don't have Arcview to test anything with,
2) I'm running MI 6.5 and cannot open shapefiles without first translating
them with UT.

If the Arcview user can import or translate *.tab and the associated files,
as I would .shp files, It would save me the time/trouble of having to export
my files to mifs. No big deal except this is somewhat of a one way
transaction from me to them unlike a data swap.

David,

having used both ESRI and Mapinfo, my experiences converting from MIF/MID to
shapes was pretty ordinary using the ESRI import tool. You can, however try
using the Universal Translator tool in MI to create a shape file. Not
having both products together I can't tell how good it is - try both ways
and see how accurate the conversion is, if that is possible, maybe with
georeferenced photos or something like that. Depending on the number and
sizes, the UT may be better.

By the way, you can also read ESRI files into MI from the 'open' MI
statement, which may also help to check for accurate conversion.

Hope this helps

[MI-L] SQL selecting carriage returns or line feeds in browser

2006-01-15 Thread David Reid
Greetings Everyone,

I have a label table in which some labels with multiple words have carriage
returns or line feeds between words.

I have updated the background data with the text of the label
_Objectinfo(obj,3)_

I wish to select only the records which have line feeds or carriage returns
(any record with at least one return) so I can clean those characters out so
I can create a clean index table.

I see that if I copy the text of the label from the browser and paste it as
text in UltraEdit and switch to hexadecimal mode, the characters for the
returns are 0A which translate to decimal code 10 chr$(10) or a line feed.

I've tried with no success the following:

Select: *
From: MYTABLE
Where: LABEL like %chr$(10)% (line feed)

Where: LABEL like %chr$(13)% (carriage return)

Where: LABEL like %chr$(28)% 29 30 (file, group, record separator)

Where: LABEL like %\n%

I just new one of these would work but no such luck. What am I missing here?

Thanks,
David Reid

Howdy,

I have a field containing formatted street address (eg 27a Smith St,
Smithfield ) and I want to create a label displaying just the house
number (eg 27a).

I'm using MapInfo Pro Version 6.0. Have looked at all the label string
functions as hoped to use the first space in the string as a delimiter,
but no joy

Does anyone have any bright ideas ?

[MI-L] Packing a table via Mapbasic

2005-12-29 Thread David Reid
Greetings All,

Quick question I hope. To pack a table including data and graphics, one
simply issues the command:

Pack Table [MY TABLE] Graphic Data

But I notice viewing the Mapbasic Window from with MI, when a table is
packed, there are 14 lines or actions carried out (EX below) so which is the
proper method?

Create Table ~MAP0011
Create Map For ~MAP0011 CoordSys
Set Table ~MAP0011 FastEdit On Undo Off
Insert Into ~MAP0011 .
Commit Table ~MAP0011
Set Table ~MAP0011 FastEdit Off Undo On
drop index [MY TABLE] (STREET)
Create Index On [MY TABLE] (STREET)
drop index [MY TABLE] (NAME)
Create Index [MY TABLE] (NAME)
drop index [MY TABLE] (CORDNBR)

RE: [MI-L] Fixes and New MapInfo Features

2005-12-22 Thread David Reid
Another vote for cartography

This is obviously a sign that the powers that be for whatever reason, have
forsaken the opinions on this list.

When I think back over the years that I've been watching this list, I recall
the same similar comments as Flavio makes... we've been waiting for xx
since version and that version seems to always be around version 4'ish
and the what we want usually is the same issues.

As I started out my journey with Mapinfo at v4, then upgrading to 6.0 then
6.5, I can honestly say, 6.5 is definetly far better than 4 but so many of
the issues people ranted about in v4 are still there in 6.5 and from what
I've gleamed from the list, are evidentally still be in the current version.

I think Trey indicated his satisfaction with v6.5 and Bill hammered home the
cartographic issues and I have to agree, to validate the expense of an
upgrade, I'll have to see enhancements on the cartographic side. People I
deal with aren't impressed with what I do behind the scenes in Mapinfo, to
them, it's the final printed map they want to see.

But I think I also recall we've been down this road before and it was Bill
and some others who pointed out that the once flagship Mapinfo Professional
Desktop is now downgraded to a tender within the Mapinfo Fleet of other
ships.

Ho Ho Ho...

Off Topic: Dot Net question was: RE: [MI-L] Fixes and New MapInfo Features

I hope that this dot net concept isn't indicative of what I've seen of
late.

Needing to convert some engineering plats from Autocad produced DWG files, I
wanted to see just what the producer wanted so I downloaded Autocad's
freebie DWG viewer.

GOOD GRIEF!!! This thing was 106MB, and for a mere VIEWER/print ONLY! I
noticed during the install process it had to install the MS dot net
framework and that seemed to take as long as some of the other install
processes.

Is the dot net framework indicative of GREAT BIG'OLE' HUMOUNGUS hard drive
realestate consuming files?

[MI-L] SUM: Mapbasic window has stopped working

2005-12-21 Thread David Reid
Thanks to Kent Treichel who pointed out what I feared, and that was a case
of Hot Key Highjack :)

The problem was (as usual) user level interferance. I had remapped the
[Ctrl]+[M] sequance in my MAPINFOW.MNU file to change the mouse pointer to
the Grabber Tool or Hand which allows you to manually reposition or
M=move the mapper window.

This keyboard shortcut sequence is one not otherwise documented in the
factory production of the MI menu file so I used it.

This was a result of discussions a couple months ago with Peter Horsbøll
Møller and others about making the Mapinfo keyboard a little more useful.

Peter, I've cc'd you as you and I had discussed off list about the potential
of other unknown quirks with manipulating these keystrokes. Too bad these
little issues can't be circumvented.

Thanks again Kent,

David

Greetings All,

What would make the Mapbasic window stop functioning in terms of issueing
commands?
I setout to use the MB window for a simply update process

Update Query50 Set CLASS = A41

But nothing happens when I initiate this (ie press [Enter] while that line
is active).

Thanks in advance,

RE: [MI-L] Need GPS Unit to produce Snail Trail that ccan be added to Existing MI Pro Street Layer

2005-12-15 Thread David Reid
This is far easier than most think it is. And actually less work than what
you propose (if you have a notebook computer). Included on the installation
disk of your Mapinfo program is GPS tracking utility by Blue Marble called
Geotracker. I wouldn't, couldn't do my job without it.

You've got MI and Geotracker, all you need now is:

Optional, laptop computer. With a laptop, you can digitize directly to
chosen Mapinfo table, otherwise, you'll need to dowload the data and process
when back at the office.

If you don't have a laptop computer for real time digitizing with
Geotracker, Christian Singer has a very nice application for uploading and
downloading GPS data between the Garmin GPS and Mapinfo, called Garfile.
Garfile will download the data and place it into a Mapinfo MIF/MID file
ready for import.

Portable GPS with data cable capability. I personally use the Garmin 12cx as
it holds quite a number of waypoints or trackpoints (it's a few years old,
newer ones may have larger capacity.)

The datacable naturally. Consider one with a 12vdc lighter plug for
alternate power.

Optional but worth the extra $, is an external antenna, doesn't have to be
fancy, I use an Antennex magnet mount. Make sure you purchase a GPS that can
hook up to an ext. antenna, most all the Garmins can above the little
Walmart disposable ones.

Optional but nice, a Ram suction cup mount and cradle to hold your GPS in
view. A must if you're not using an external antenna, you'll need the GPS
near the dashboard and windshield to receive well.

If you insist on having the GPS laying in the seat, you'll definetly need
the external antenna.

Have I stated external antenna enough. They're great, won't necessarily
increase your accuracy but moreover, it stabilizes the accuracy.

You're automobile becomes your digitizing puck, the earth your tablet!

Hi List:

Here is my challenge. I need up-to-date, accurate street layers.
Affordable Aerial Photos are always behind the growth curve, and
commercially produced street layers have the same problem and often show
non-existent roads

I would like to be able to throw an inexpensive GPS unit on the seat of a
truck and drive slowly thru new neighborhoods and record my route, adding a
lat/lon point to a continuously recorded snail trail at a recording rate of
at least 1point/second. Slow update rates likely will result in missed
corners and chords instead of smooth arcs representing the curves in the
roads.

Once the neighborhood is driven, I would like to be able to download the
data and produce a MapInfo TAB file, either from a Shape File download or a
comma delimited ascii data download.

Can anyone recommend moderately priced GPS unit that will allow me to do
this. I know that there are sophisticated Avionics units that will do this,
but they are out of by budget range.

Thanks

Doug Wassmer

Has anyone every tried to replace some of the mouse activity associated with
digitizing with one of these new pen tablets made by Wacom. They seem to
range in price from $120.00 CAD Graphire to $530.00 for the top end Intuos
where it acts like an air brush painting system.

I am trying to cut down on the mouse ache as sometimes I have to do an
intensive amount of digitizing for certain types of projects our company
specializes in. I do have a small digitizing tablet I could use but I can't
be bothered.

Wacom doesn't seem to say if it is directly compatible in the MapInfo

Thanks, Erica.

RE: [MI-L] Follow-up: Holidays, Temporarily Unsubscribing and AnnoyingAutoresponders

2005-12-02 Thread David Reid
If you're out of office replies are being activated by MS Outlook, I presume
your company is using MS Exchange Server. Otherwise, your company email
server is sending these after you have notified your admin that you'll be
out of the office. For this, you may can log into your email server and
hopefully, instruct it to disregard either messages from
_lists.directionsmag.com_ in the email header or with the subject: _[MI-L]_
(omit the underscores _)

On the tools menu, look for Out of Office Assistant and use it to create
mail handling rules
to handle messages that come in with [MI-L] in the subject (that's: open
bracket M I hyphen L close bracket).

If you're using Exchange and Outlook and don't see Out of Office Assistant
on the menu, click Options on the tools menu and click Other/Advanced
Options/Addin manager then Exchange extensions.

Sorry I can't go much further as we don't use Exchange at the office and I
haven't personnally in years.

[Mapinfo-l] Create a point object at centroid

2005-11-15 Thread David Reid
Greetings List,

I'm trying to do a simple little routine here to mark the centroid of a
single section line (two node line) with a point object. I get to the point
of saving the active table then creating the point within it, but I don't
want to have to specify the table name (ie, I want this to work on any table
I have, all have the same two columns described below).

Update Selection Set XCORD = CentroidX(Obj) 'Returns the xcoord of the
object
Update Selection Set YCORD = CentroidY(Obj) 'Returns the yccord of the
object
Delete Object From Selection 'Deletes only the graphic line object leaving
data

I presume that just as if you use the menu option to Create Points, the
table must be saved first before you can insert an object at the centroid
from above. From here I'm a little stumped

Commit [currently_active_table] 'Save the table currently being edited
Update [currently_active_table] 'Update currently active table
Set obj = CreatePoint(xcord, ycord) 'Create a point object only for the
record updated previously

I may be going about this all wrong, or perhaps I will need to create a
temporary table from the selected object and work from it

Would appreciate any help here.

Thanks,
Dave

[Mapinfo-l] SUM: Create a point object at centroid

2005-11-15 Thread David Reid
Fantastic, actually, the one line _Update Selection Set OBJ = Centroid(OBJ)_
is all I needed.

I was doing all the update of centroid just so I could create an object at
that point by converting that pline to a point, the initial line object is
very disposable in this case, I simply need to identify (with an object) the
halfway point between these simple two node polylines.

Thanks for the great help Peter, looks like I was going about this little
mbx using the bloatware method.

Why use one line of code, when the same thing can be accomplished with 17
lines!!! ;)

Dave,

You can use the SelectionInfo(SEL_INFO_TABLENAME) to find the nameof the
base table that your selection has selected records from.

You can actually do this using just two statement:

Update Selection Set OBJ = Centroid(OBJ)
Commit Table SelectionInfo(SEL_INFO_TABLENAME)

This will replace the current object(s) on the records in selection with a
point (here the centroid)

If you also need to update the columns with the X and Y, you should do this
before the other:
Update Selection Set XCOORD = CentroidX(OBJ), YCOORD = CentroidY(OBJ)
Update Selection Set OBJ = Centroid(OBJ)
Commit Table SelectionInfo(SEL_INFO_TABLENAME)

But it is not necessary to update columns with coordinates just to alter the
object.

Also be aware that this will actual replace the existing objects, and there
is no easy way back here. So you might consider making a copy of the
original table before updating the objects, or maybe insert the centroid
into another table.

Thanks to Peter for a very good atempt at using Mapbasic at startup to

doesn't quite work, at least not witout quite a bit more hacking with
syntax.

The only other alternative could possible cause serious problems with
Mapinfo's stability so I want get into them here. I guess this is something
one will have to live with until an upgrade can be afforded.

Changing pointers in mouse properties doesn't seem to change anything,

David,

The newer versions of MapInfo supports a full screen cursor. This cursor can
be turned on by hitting the c-key on your keyboard. Just like swithing on
snap with the s-key.

Is this better ?

If not you should be able to add an extra line to the MapInfow.mnu pointing
to your own cursor in another dll file (placed the dll in the MapInfo
program folder.

MapInfow.mnu:
...
Create ButtonPad Drawing ID 2 As

  ToolButton
Icon 18
 Cursor 1 MyOwn.dll
Calling 1713
HelpMsg Draw a polyline in an editable map or active layout

...

I must admit that I haven't tried to change the cursor of a standard MapInfo
tool in this way, but I guess it should work. Let me know

grayscale digital orthos and you loose the digitizing crosshair!

Well, not necessarily loose it but after a while it becomes very annoying
and creates eyestrain, everybody understands that... Has anyone found a way
to change the crosshair to a more visible object?

Changing pointers in mouse properties doesn't seem to change anything,
Mapinfo Preferences doesn't seem to allow changing this. I'm hoping maybe
through Mapbasic or something???

Thanks,
David Reid

Hi all, very frustrated with mapinfo crashing(just being unavailable for
hours - leading to me terminating it) after I move a few labels that are
overlapping in a map window. This typically occurs when I have a raster
background image. I have learnt to turn it(the raster layer) off and this
mostly works, after which you can turn it back on. But now it has happened
again, despite this. Does anyone have this happen and is there a solution.

RE: MI-L Layer Control (bottom/top)

2005-10-17 Thread David Reid
Well, unless you're referring to doing this programmatically, you can simply
select the layers you wish to rearrange, and simply drag them with your
mouse.

Selecting the layers works just like in Windows Explorer, if you select the
first layer, then hold the [Ctrl] down, then select the 5,6 and 11th layer,
you can then drag them up/down the list, while those are selected, you can
also make all visible/invisible by checking only one of the visibility
boxes, or label boxes etc.

You can also use the shift key, say if you wish to hide 21st through 28th
layer, click on the 21st, hold the [Shift] key, click on the 28th one, and
all in between will be selected, then drag or hide whatever.

RE: MI-L Layer Control (bottom/top)

2005-10-17 Thread David Reid
I see your issue more clearly now. Well, Mapbasic would come in handy here,
if you dont have it, you can always use the Mapbasic window.

As you indicate you perform the same or similar task multiple times a day,
the mapbasic window will be extremely helpful.

Bring up your Mapbasic window, change your layer order as you wish and
you'll notice when you close the layer control dialog, what you just did is
recorded in the Mapbasic window.

The downside is that your Mapbasic window will get poluted from overuse.
There is however, _I think_ a utility floating around somewhere (Directions
Magazine site, Geo Community etal) that helps you manage the various
commands you've run.

If you have Mapbasic, that which you see in the Mapbasic window can be used
as a _starter mix_ for creating your custom mbx.

Last and probably the best, wait for the Guru's to begin wandering in on
this thread :)

Now it's just a matter of muddling though all these redundant DWG layers to

SUM: RE: MI-L SQL WITHIN operator question

2005-10-12 Thread David Reid
Thanks to Hugh, Peter and Jose for the help, looks like a matter of having
all your ducks in a row :)

-Original Message-
Objects in one table = text objects some line objects
Objects in second table = region/polyg objects

Attempting to select objects in one table that are Not Within objects of a
second table.

[MYTEXT].Obj Within [MYINSETS].Obj
Naturally selects all the text objects that are found within the polygon
objects.

Is Not Within simply not doable?

Ex: [MYTEXT].Obj Not Within [MYINSETS].Obj

Aside from selecting all objects that Are Within, then using the Inverse
select tool, just isn't pretty :)

---
The correct syntax is

 ... Where Not ([MYTEXT].Obj Within [MYINSETS].Obj)

If you click the Verify button, it will say that the Syntax is correct,
however, when you click OK, you will get an error message like:

No join specified between tables [MYTEXT] and [MYINSETS]. Invalid join
condition in Where clause.

This is because you require a join of 2 tables for this type of query
and MapInfo SQL is very fussy about joins. The condition:

... Where ([MYTEXT].Obj Within [MYINSETS].Obj)

is OK, but if you use Not it is invalid. I'm sorry but I can't think of
a solution at the moment.

Hugh Grant

---

Sure, it is doable. It's just a question of putting the words in the right
order ;-)
And I also think that you need to use a subselect for this query:

Select * From ONETABLE
Where Not OBJ Within Any (Select Obj From SECONDTABLE)

Note that I have placed the Not in front of the condition. This means that
MapInfo will start testing the condition, and if the condition is TRUE, it
will end up being FALSE; if the condition is FALSE it will end up being TRUE

But again, I will have to tell you that this query is slow (I'm actually not
sure whether this was what they fixed with the patch for MapInfo 8.0??), so
if speed is important, I would recommand you to leave out the NOT and use
the Invert selection afterwards

Peter Horsbøll Møller

---

The correct sintax is:

NOT [MYTEXT].Obj Within [MYINSETS].Obj

(Note the not clause is before the object)

Hope this helps,

RE: MI-L too many maps into 1 map

2005-10-06 Thread David Reid
Use caution appending or merging these files together. From my experience,
the different tables created from dwg's during conversion have different MBR
or Coordsys Bounds. When two tables of different mbr are combined, any data
from one, outside the bounds of the other will be truncated and rendered
useless if care is not taken.

There's surely a solution for this, but I've yet to come across such.

MI-L More Hot Keys

2005-09-23 Thread David Reid
Just a thanks to Peter and the L in general (again). This has to be one of
the most productive mailing lists I've ever been a member of and for my 6
years as a Mapinfo user, the L has steadily held this prestige!

A note about the Hotkeys and a thanks to Peter for reminding me to think
outside the box.

While digitizing today, it dawned on me after about an hour of doing the
Keyboard Mouse Two Step, that now that I've added Peter's suggestion of the
hotkey for the select tool, the same would be awful handy for the Add node
tool.

As I seldom use the hotkey Ctrl N for creating a new table, I thought it
only makes sense that Ctrl N add a Node! So under the Edit menu and just
below the entry for Reshape, I added:

  Add Node\tCtrl+N/W^N/Mn/XCtrl+n
HelpMsg Add a node to a region, polyline or line.
   Calling 1723,

If someone's reading this and likes the idea, you'll need to make one
adjustment before doing this in your mapinfo.mnu file. On the line for New
Table, you'll either need to remove or edit that line. I prefer to escape
it, or rem it out like so:

' New Table...\tCtrl+N/W^N/Mn/XCtrl+n
  New Table...
HelpMsg Create a new table.
calling 101,

The apostrophe at character space one works as it does in Mapbasic, it
causes MI to overlook that line. This way, I maintain some semblance of the
original .mnu file.

This might be misunderstood as being a little overboard with hotkeys, but it
really can save some time and mouse movement when your doing some extensive
digitizing and or a lot of it. Once you have an object set to reshape you
can move a node, add a node, undo a movement with one hand without taking
your eye off the spot: Ctrl+Space, Ctrl+N, Ctrl+Z.

Thanks Peter!

Hello all MapInfo programmer type people...

I've been working with the mapinfow.mnu file to add HotKeys for various
functions we use all the time (split, combine, select update table, etc).
That all works nicely. *pats self on back*

However, what i'd like to do, but haven't had enough time to figure out is
how to create HotKeys for some of the functions that are only available as
pushbuttons, such as the polygon draw tool and the select tool and the info
tool.

I'm thinking i could create a new Drawing Tools menu option with those
functions in it and then create hotkeys there, but i could be horribly wrong
with that assumption.

Any suggestions or examples would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

RE: MI-L Run Application

2005-09-16 Thread David Reid
Once you find how easy it is to run other programs you might want to have a
look at User Menu by Christophe Barbier. I believe it is available from the
Directions Tool crib.

It allows you to add very customizable menus to the menu bar which can do
anything from open tab files, to run DOS batch files and open other
programs. User menus is managed by a user editable .ini file.

I don’t know what was handier than a shirt pocket before it came along, but
UserMenus is handier :)

I run DOS batch files that cause Access to do things, Open various Excel
files which I use for reference etc. just to name a few.

Subject: MI-L Run Application

Hey, me again.

Is it possible to start another non-MI or non-MB application from a
mapbasic application? For example, I want to have a button on my tool
bar that will launch an access database outside of MI.

I have tried a few things but all I get is could not execute - program
could not be run.

Any hints?

Thanks,

Alan

MI-L SUM: Over Taxing a Workspace file

2005-09-12 Thread David Reid
Thanks to Vicky Bonwick for the fall over the mouse easy solution to
changing browser font size. This one has just simply illuded me...

you can shrink the text in a browser by selecting all records (make sure
the browser is the active window) then go to the text style tool and choose
a smaller font size

Thanks Vicy,

Dave

Subject: MI-L Over Taxing a Workspace file

Greetings all,

I have been working on an updated wall map one which I have allowed myself
enough room within the right margin to place my street index. Taking
numerous steps with Mapinfo, Excel and UltraEdit, I have worked out the
layout of some 800 streets to fit within 4 columns and within my map sheet
(36x60).

Since a frame of a browser window of this index won't fit due to the text
being too large, I next tried the display of my list in as a raster file,
_BLEC_ looked awful. So I've set out to use Create Text statements in the
workspace file for this index list.

My question... Is this over taxing or asking too much of the workspace file?
I'm aware that the more create text statements there are, the longer it will
take to open the work space, but I don't know of any better way to display
this list in my layout and have it print on the same sheet of paper.

Thanks,
David Reid

RE: MI-L Using fonts for symbols.

2005-08-31 Thread David Reid
Robert,

For a font to be seen by Mapinfo (etal) as a symbol, the font character set
must be tagged as symbol by the foundary which it was built or edited by.
So, to use a particular font as a map symbol, you'd have to edit the font
file itself changing its character set to symbol, then re-compile or
re-build the font.

What is the difference between a true type font that can be used for point
symbols and one that can't. I installed a few fonts (ttf) by placing them
in the fonts directory, and while I can use them for text, they dont
appear as options for points.

In ultraedit, both the mapinfo fonts available for points and the new
fonts show up as TT.

What is the trigger that distinguishes them. I'm using XP.

RE: MI-L MapInfo-l List imnnovation?

2005-08-03 Thread David Reid
I've wondered when this would come back up. Bill Thoen tried a Wiki web for
MI but the forces of nature forced it down.

I've often thought the new php boards would make nice furnishings for a MI
group, highly searchable, galleries for such as you speak of, (graphics,
code etc).

But I digress, finding a home is the problem, Directions is kind enough to
house us and it's understandable that extras would really eat up their
bandwidth what with all the other group lists they are a platform for.

I agree on this one.

Maybe the list could grow into holding graphics, code snippets, sample
programs and so on. I don't know if it would be wise to keep e-mailing all
this around, but sending an index mail of the daily posts would be good. We
might also consider using something like atlassian JIRA (www.atlassian.com)
which makes it great to maintain subjects in groups with status, replies and
all hooked together.

Kind regards,

I was wondering if a list like this one might one day lift the List game a
bit? With all the really neat stuff going on related to faster and faster
internet connections generally, it might be informative as well as fun if
the visual stuff we get so involved in might be shared and issues
illustrated? Or are we so intimidated by spreading internet diseases that
we must continue to exist only on TXT oatmeal without even raisins or brown
sugar?

RE: MI-L date fields in labels

2005-07-27 Thread David Reid
I'm sure there's probably a better way to do it but this should work:

Change DATE to the name of your date column and assuming all dates are in
the same format and length:

Use the following expression to label with:

Mid$(DATE,5,2)+/+Right$(DATE,2)+/+Left$(DATE,4)

That should label in more user friendly results.

Is there an easy way to change the format of date fields in labels?
(i.e. change from 20040416 to 04/16/2004)

MI-L Need IF statement to update column

2005-07-12 Thread David Reid
Greetings List,

I've seen references to this before but never seem to find what will apply
to the need at the time.

I know there's no IF statement for use in Mapinfo but realize there's a
way around this but I can't seem to find the path :)

Do this IF()

IF() do this ELSE(do this)

I wish to update a column with specific data from another,

Update BEARING with TEMP If %%d is found in TEMP ELSE don't do anything

%%d is literal, not wild cards %. This data was converted from a DWG
file.

Thanks,
David Reid

MI-L SUM: Need IF statement to update column

2005-07-12 Thread David Reid
It would appear the simple thing to do is export to a text file, update the
columns in Excel or Access, then dump the stuff back into MI

In Excel, my solution was to use the following formula:

For column A
=If(find(%%d),A4),A4,)

Thanks,
Dave
