Scott,

Have a look at this tool http://www.directionsmag.com/files/index.php/view/175, which will locate a point a specified distance along a line.  It includes the source code so you should be able to see how it's done from this.

James,

One
option would be to embed a map window or browser within your dialog box and
allow the user to interact with this map, so you wouldn't have to exit the
dialog box.  You'd have to use the 'Control DocumentWIndow' clause within
your dialog box to embed the map/browser window and also set up some buttons to
allow the user to select, zoom & pan around the map window.  For an
example on how to do it have a look at the Distance Calculator tool that ships
with MapInfo and the code that comes with MapBasic.

Simon,

Why not have the day, month, year as separate drop-down lists that the user selects from?  Might be neater than having the user type the date in, but you'd have to do some checking that the day/month/year selection is valid (31 days in a month, leap years etc)!  Once you have the date then you could format it as you wanted.

Subject: [MI-L]Automating Layouts - Date

Following up previous emails, in regards to utilising MB to make layout production more efficient, I have new problems.

You lot helped me create a dialog that the user could tap in names, titles, etc and then a layout would be produced with current map window and user-data as text objects. Wonderful, thanks again. Two problems:

My boss wants the date to be entered more professionally. At current, the date is entered by tapping it in: 17/09/06  (Let me point out here, I don't want it to automatically pop in todays date, as a lot of layouts we draw are pre-dated or post-dated).  So I was hoping that I could perhaps have a better data entry - maybe three small entry boxes that when you tap in the numbers, it moves from one window to another - so ud only type 170906, and when it inserted it into the layout, it would fill in the / bit.  Or any other ideas on how to improve upon current method?

Here is the existing code:
--
Title "Date"
Control EditText
Position 50, 50  width 38
Into s_date
--
Create Text
    "DATE: "+s_date
    (4.8854,0.9854) (5.459,1.0653)
    Font ("Arial",0,5,0)
---

Thanks in advance!

Simon,

You could use the 'Control DocumentWindow' clause to open the image file as table and create a new map window embedded within your dialog box.  Have a look at the DistanceCalculator tool as an example of how map/browser windows are included within a dialog box.  You might need to play around with the image size to get if to fit the map window but it should be possible.

In regards to the MB script I have been writing (previous posts: Automating Layout Production (Mapbasic))There are several more things that the end-client now wants.

Firstly, a company logo embedded into the dialog. Is this possible, if so, perhaps a snippet of some code would be nice.

I will hassle about drop down menus in another thread to follow...

Following on from the discussion below could I ask if

  below?

The problem is that while we use GPS derived WGS 84

  in BNG.

As we are based in Scotland when I open a BNG and a
WGS 84 table in mapinfo the BNG data is offset by about 11 meters to the South
West due to the one transformation that Mapinfo uses and the offset that is
built in due to the historic features in BNG.

Does anyone know if there is any way to convert

Hi Tim

There is a convertor on the OS site at
GPS.GOV.UK.

If you have Landline or MasterMap, particularly
post PAI, this will give you very accurate Easting and Northing for any
feature identifiable in your car park. Stats on accuracy of post PAI also on
the website, but you are likely to be within a metre. You could use chainage
and offset between two identifiable points to pick up other non-identifiable
points.

The free convertor will correct this BNG
position to GPS lat long, for anywhere within the Country (GB).

The method for the conversion is also
available on the site, so its possible to program British National Grid
Easting,Northing to Lat Long WGS84 ( ie GPS) or WGS84 to British
National Grid Easting Northing.

Its a great resource, and the only definitive
correction, as only Ordnance Survey know where British National Grid is
accurately! The correction is not just formulae. It uses a "look up" table
that takes into account historic "features" of BNG which have to be taken
into account to get correlation with GPS ( eg Use of old County Series maps
and "features" introduced when these were stitched together to form
BNG).

My understanding is that Trig Points are no
longer used in any OS Survey work and are therefore not maintained. I would
therefore not recommend their use.

Gordon,

There is a tool that will do this, which you can download from http://www.ing.unitn.it/~grass/software.html called punti.  It will create a point objects based on an underlying grid.   So you'll need to create a 100m grid using the Gridmaker tool and the run the Punti utility to create the points at the intersects of the grid.

Hi

I am trying to create a grid with single points appearing at each of the intersections of the horizontal and vertical lines. All attempts that have come to mind so far have not worked correctly. Can anyone please help?

Desired result:
Single points appearing at 100m spacing related to British Grid 6 figure grid references, (point would need to be at xxx,x00 m E, xxx,x00 m N)

Approaches already tried:
Gridmaker, Closed Regions (custom line style of single point at start)- start point does not appear at corner but partly up side of square Gridmaker, Straight Polylines followed by Enclose on lines (style as

above)- Enclose mostly creates squares in a switchback sequence (N on first column, S on 2nd etc)leaving points only appearing on every 2nd column

Approaches not tried:
Polyline split of every vertical with every horizontal line and vice
versa- 12x10km so too large by hand and don't have tool to automate

Thank you

Gordon

Matt,

I'd do
it the other way round - see if any of your workspaces reference the
tabfiles.  You can use a utility like SearchPlus to search through the
workspaces for the names of tabfiles.  If none of your workspaces contain
the table names then you're safe to delete them.  You can down load
SearchPlus here - http://www.paris-pc-gis.com/externes/Files_from_other_origins.htm (towards

Chris,

You
could always use the MBR of the circle and then use this in the SearchRect()
function.  You can then use SearchInfo() function to return the Table/RowID
of objects found within the search area and then test to see if these objects do
fall within the radius of circle.

There's an ESRI 'oil gas water'TTF font available to download here - http://moorstation.org/typoasis/designers/esri/index.htm

Not sure about any licensing issues though!

After checking the archives I found only one message that described a mix of truetype symbols for geology and oil & gas for MapInfo. But it was pretty old and all the referenced links from it are 404. So I'm looking for MapInfocompatable symbols that match the symbols supported in a software package known as Petra.

The Oil & Gas symbols that come with MapInfo aren't enough.

Does anyone have any suggestions or public resources? Even commercial is okay as long as the set has what I need.

TIA,

- Bill Thoen

Are you talking about a table or a workspace?  You shouldn't have any trouble opening a table in either versions of MI but a workspace created in v8 may well not open in MI v7 due to some additional commands incorporated in MI v7.5.

Hi..
I think MI 8.0 cannot save in the 7.0 version.
Have you tried opening the .tab file with notepad and modifying the
line: !version 800

change it to: !version 700

then try to open it with MI 7.0

John,

I've written a tool that will tell you which OS raster tiles are needed
given the current map window extents. It's work with all the OS raster
products (10k, 25k, 50k, 250, StreetView). You can down load it from the

I've actually extent the functionality to automatically load the raster
tiles if you've specified a path in an associated .ini file but I haven't

Hi folks,

Could someone suggest an automated way to combine a number of region objects
based on one attribute?

What I have is just under 4000 zones exported form our corporate GIS
(Smallworld). There are a number of zones which consist of multiple
geometries with a common reference attribute (range from 2 up to 14
objects). What I need to do is to combine the ones with the same reference.
Easy to do one at a time but a bit slow as there are well over 1000 of
these.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

RE: [MI-L] Clash using Find with WinChangedHandler

2005-12-15 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
Bob,

This may be stating the obvious but the Find statement searches a mappable
table and the change view/zoom/pan all work on map windows. So, if you're
searching a table that you're over-writing won't that get MapInfo's knickers
in a twist? But if you just moving the map window using pan/zoom etc, then
it'll be able to cope with this?

Just a thought.

Subject: [MI-L] Clash using Find with WinChangedHandler

Hi List

Can anyone please shed any light on the difference between setting the map
centre with use of Find, and setting the map centre with Change View?

Specifically I am using WinChangedHandler to build a MapInfo table "on the
fly". I am writing a MapInfo table "on the fly" from a large dataset. The
MapInfo table contains just the contents of the screen. The routine works ok
for pan and zoom.It also works if the screen centre, or zoom width are
changed with Change View.

However when I use the Find command I get a crash. The Microsoft error
signature points to ntdll.dll.

During the WinChangedHandler I am overwriting a table that is in the Map
Window - which almost certainly is at the root of the problem. However
within the routine I am using
Set Handler WinchangedHandler off
and
Set Event Processing off

and at the end turn both back on.

Therefore the map should not redraw until the end of the routine by which
time the "new" table is ready. Also as previously stated the routine works
with zoom, pan and even ChangeView.

So could anybody suggest what is different when using Find?

Lost two days already on this !!!

Regards

Bob

RE: MI-L Error - dialogfunctions.mb:65 Subscript out of range

2005-10-28 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
Steve,

I guess it's coming from one of the MapBasic programs you've got running
through the Tool Manager. Out of curiosity I searched the code samples that
are supplied with MapBasic and it looks like the DistanceCalc tool contains
some source code contained in a 'DialogFunctions.mb' module. Do you have
this tool set to autorun every time you start MapInfo? Line 65 is actually
within a SelChangeHandler procedure so it'll be called every time the
selection changes, even if you aren't using the DistanceCalc tool at the
time (I think that's right?).

Obliviously, other people may have given their source code the same name so
it's conclusive proof that it's this tool!

RE: MI-L Ang. MI-L Another PDF map printing query

Isn't this a feature of MI V8? There is a Printing.pdf document on the MI
V8 install CD which documents this:

--->

Warning Displays When Print Output is Too Large:

When you are printing a large map, it is possible for very high resolution
or very large paper dimension print requests to exceed MapInfo
Professional's internal pixel limitations, which cause the print to fail. If
the printer width or height is larger than 32,767 pixels, MapInfo
Professional does not allow you to print the file and displays this message:

Error: Unable to print because printer dimensions are too large. Try
decreasing the print resolution or page size. Please consult the Printing
Guide provided on the CD to maximize your printing capability.

If the printable size (pixel width or height) is between 28,000 and 32,767,
MapInfo Professional prompts you to see if you want to continue and displays
this message:

Warning: The output may get clipped because it is greater than 28,000

Mats E/Mathieu/et al

We have had the same problem with the 28 000 pixel restriction (print to
plotter or PDF), so I had a look at V7.8 printing file on the CD to see if
the restriction applied to 7.8 as well. It is written in the 7.8 printing
.pdf file in the same manner as in V8 that thou shall not exceed 28 thou
pixels. I then tested the same file in V7.8 which we keep loaded on a demo
PC and printed on the plotter as well as to a PDF (thru Adobe)file with no
problems at all. So the restriction doesn't seem to be enforced by V7.8. Has
anyone experienced this restriction in other versions ?

My colleague and I discussed just when we started getting the rigid
restriction problem and it seems to have appeared just after we loaded the
V8 patch. Next test platform is to remove and reload V8 without the patch
and see if the restriction returns.

Has anyone approached MapInfo Corp or received any reassurance from MapInfo
Corp that this problem is being looked into/will be removed/can be
blindsided with science or something ?

Am very interested in other user's experience. Thanks.

Hi Mathieu!

You blamed your problem on Adobe, but on Friday, August 13, 2004, Cinda
Graubard from GeoMax wrote to this list:

"MapInfo tech support has confirmed what a client recently stated: MapInfo
has a hard wired printing limitation of 28,000 pixels per any row or column.
Tech support told me that MapInfo imposes this limitation in
order to keep the software compatible with Microsoft's Windows 98 or lower
operating systems."

As a side note I think that maybe MI should say goodbye to Win 98 users,
if that is necessary to lift this limit.

But meanwhile, try adjusting the resolution of your pdf output. In most
cases, ordinary printers or plotters cannot use resolutions above 300 dpi,
and some printers use a smoothing that makes 150 dpi look just like 300
dpi.
Maybe your pdf engine is set to 600 or even 1200 dpi which only bloats the
pdf file to no good.

Ok, now my problem is this: when I try to print off large (A1 or bigger) PDF

Even though I have undergone formal GIS training (MAppSC GIS) and have used
MapInfo for over 10 years, I have not really investigated or been taught
basic catographic principles.

What books and / or websites would people recommend dealing with catographic
layout / "niceties" / colours / text sizes, etc for presentation purposes.
In particular, I am interested in design principles when preparing maps at
various scales for output (A0 to A4) and also preparing JPEG's in MapInfo
(in the visual sense mind you) for insertion to Powerpoint slides.

I sometimes spend up to 30 minutes, playing with various line colours,
against an underlying (varying) polygon colour and tackling varying text
sizes for various areas of a map ... it would nice to learn about and then
implement standards so that the maps look just that "bit more professional".

Also, are there any country polygon datasets available that "range the
colours" for elevation. I'm not interested in anything "raster", but I could
see a use for polygons with a nice gradational range of elevations.

Many thanks for all your comments. I will sum.

Cheers,

Bill

There is a free tool that you can download from DirectionsMag site, which I
can't seem to get onto at the moment or else I'd include a link!! The tool
will convert layers from a map window into KML format, which you can then
load into Google Earth (under File -> Open). There are some limitations
with the tool, but it's a good start and the source code is included so
hopefully people will develop it further, as the author intended.

Brian,
That's a good answer, and I'm sure that the federal agencies will tap into
the GIS resources through the system that you describe. On the other hand,
based on my experience working at the local level with emergency management,
there are probably plenty of State, county, and local level agencies who
would be very receptive to the helping hands offered by Ross and Eric. This
would be particularly true in those areas that are hard hit but outside the
major population centers like New Orleans, Gulfport, and Biloxi. While it
would probably would be great to have GISTs that are trained to high
standards available to all these communities in need, the reality is that
most of the immediate federal assistance is going to go to those areas most
prominent on the radar (and television) screens, and that there is probably
many a small town mayor or local EMA director who would be delighted to get
some mapping assistance regardless of whether or not it met exacting federal
standards. GIS is an incredibly powerful technology for emergency
management and disaster response, and I can't fathom any emergency response
manager saying that they have all the GIS that they need, especially since
(as Ross and Eric obviously understand) the GIS operators and machines don't
necessarily have to be physically at the scene to be of assistance.

Brian and Eric, regardless of whether you get an opportunity to help out,
you did the right thing by stepping up when there was a potential need for
your services. Thanks.

Hello List,

Just some FYI information. Although there may be a need right now, this
type of info is probably being handled on the Federal Gov't end by the
Incident Management Teams that are down their to provide relief. I myself
am a federal GIST, recognized within the resource ordering system as one.
You would have to be a GIST within ROSS and be made "available" to help.
Even if you have years of experience, you can't just me made a GIST because
there are protocols for data collection, naming conventions, etc. that are
taught to GIST's. There was a huge need for GIS in the Columbia Space
Shuttle response but I am not sure how much out of house personnel was used.
That incident was managed in the same way the Katrina response is now. Also
be aware that the federal standard for these type incidents is ArcGIS.

I am not saying that there no chance your services might or can be used,
just making the point of what is probably going on.

On a side note, my wife is down there with a federal response team and they
have no need for GIS services on their team at this time.

RE: MI-L Selecting records that fall within a range of values

2005-08-19 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
Not sure if this will work in earlier versions of MI (I use MI v8) but you
could also use the 'between' key word for numeric values:

Select * from YourTable where Date between 1900 and 2000

For date you could try:

Select * from points where date1 between "02/02/05" and "01/08/05"

Assuming that date is a numeric field, otherwise date fuynctions will need
to be employed:

Select * from YourTable

John,

Feels a bit disloyal but you could have a look at Map Maker
http://www.mapmaker.com/index.htm. You can download a free version or for a
modest outlay go for the Pro version and get features like NTF
compatibility, which is important if you clients want to use OS vector data
(even MapInfo doesn't offer that!).

I haven't used it so can't comment on it's performance but it looks a
bargain!

Hello Listers,

Sorry to drift slightly off topic but I have been asked by a client for
advice on cheap, off the shelf fairly basic GIS software packages. My client
is a small planning consultancy and simply needs a package which will allow
him to import, display and do simple analysis on geographical information
compatible with most data formats in particular Ordnance Survey products.
Basically what he wants to do in his own words is:

"Open OS maps, draw a few lines and dots, and then put the resultant maps in
reports"

I have looked at and have experience with most of the main vendors but would
welcome any input from you all.

Thanks very much for your help.

RE: MI-L Another question on 8.0

2005-07-20 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
Mike,

I'm not sure why you are have such problems as we have recently upgraded to
MI V8 and we haven't experienced any issues opening workspaces created using
older versions of MI. The only time I've come across your problem is when
I've sent a workspace created in MI v7/v7.5 to a user with MI v6.5 and
they've been unable to open the workspace. Which is to be expected as the
SessionInfo function was only added to MI V7 (I think this is right?). If I
copy the lines below into a new workspace the layout window opens find in V8
(regardless of the the version of MI set in the workspace). So I don't
think there is an issue with compatibility between versions, so you really
shouldn't have to edit one workspace never mind 300.

The only explanation for your problem that I can come up with is that the
workspace you opened previously to getting the error failed due to some
reason (can't find a table for example) and the UnDim statement hasn't been
executed. So when you opened the next workspace MI was trying to Dim a
variable that already existed, so failed (I think this was the explanation
given in the old thread). Could this be the problem? If you close and
start a new MI session do you get the same error? Have you tried any other
workspaces?

Greg.

Greg, Thanks for the reply. The answer to the previous post is the same as

to get out there is I have a clean workspace that worked fine in 7.8. Now
in 8.0, there are extra lines in the workspace that blow it up-- see below.

is like MI Pro 8.0 is reading the workspace differently than 7.8, where this

should not have to go back into a text editor and correct a workspace that

If you right-click in the map window and select the Change View option you

Hello:

Is it possible to write a MapBasic program in a text editor and expect
MapInfo to be able to run it? If not is there any tools out there that would
allow that to happen without MapBasic.

Thank You

MI-L ESRI true type fonts

2005-07-13 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
Here's a link to some ESRI true type fonts that can be used within MapInfo -

http://moorstation.org/typoasis/designers/esri/index.htm

It includes fonts for crime analysis, cartography, environmental icons,
transportation and a few others.

I think I'm right in saying that you can just copy the .ttf files into the
Fonts folder under the Windows directory, or select Fonts via the Control
Panel and use the 'Install New Font' option under the File menu to install
the copied fonts. If MapInfo is running you'll need to exit and start it
again before the fonts will become available in the Symbol Style dialog box.

RE: MI-L Restricting User Access

2005-07-12 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
James,

One way to do it would be to have a text or '.ini' file that listed all the
user names allowed to run the mbx. When your MapBasic program is run it
could retrieve the current user name (I've got the code to do this if you
need it) and then check this against those in the text/.ini file and allow
access if it's in the list. It's not totally fool-proof as a smart user
could edit the text/.ini file to give themselves access. As an alternative
you could hard-code the user names in the MapBasic program, but that means
having to re-compile every time you wanted to alter the usernames list.

You might also be able to restrict access to the mbx if you located it on a
server and then set the permissions for the folder.

All,

I was wondering whether it is possible to restrict the users that can run a

specified use the program.

Is this at all possible?

Hello MapInfo List

We have a client who is expanding into the Asian market and is looking for a
geocoder and/or detailed map data (street level with addresses, locality
boundaries, etc) for Korea (North and South). At this point we have been
unable to source any options other than the "WorldInfo" product which in no
way meets the client's wishes but is the offering available from MapInfo.
Our research also indicates that this level of data may be unavailable at
present but is currently being developed in Korea due to the growing
application of GIS in the area.

Does anybody on the list know of any possible providers of this sort of
data.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi all,

I have noticed that when you manually select and move a lable it is no
longer turns on or off with the label option in the Layer Control box. You
now have to edit this lable seperately. Even if you have the editing box
selected the label seems to be added to the cosmetic layer.

Can anyone tell me why this is, and how to change a label position
permanently?

I know that when a layer is editable and you select some or all components
of that layer you can permanently change the line, region, text or symbol
style by using the Options menu on the toolbar, so why not the label
position?

Any thoughts would be helpful, thanks!

Ah, yes - in my MI 4.5, that would have to be translated to:

Set Window 1003 Position (0, 0) Height 3 Width 3
Open Window 1003

> In the MB window I'm using

Interesting - I hadn't seen that before. However, I can't get it to work on
my MI 4.5.

The version I gave was needed for an application that I run that has some
really strange
bug where the Message Window is actually open, but is off the screen
somewhere - the
2 commands bring it back on screen & then open it just in case.

Actually, just reading the original posting again, they want the Info Window
on the
screen, not the Message Window... I have never seen the Info Window
disappear off
the screen before, but I guess it could. In that case, replacing 1003 with
1008 above
should work, although the numbers may be different for newer versions of
MapInfo.

To Jocelyn - Doesn't clicking the "i" button then clicking on an object on
the map bring
up the window?

RE: MI-L Find near matches

Ricardo,

If you use the 'Find tablename interactive' mode then MapBasic will do the
work for you. If a search doesn't find an exact match then a dialog will be
displayed for the user to select from a list of near matches (just as it
does if you do a Find via MapInfo). This is how I've done it with a utility
I created for searching postcodes (zip codes).

If you wanted to do it manually then you could do some sort of SQL select
using wildcards to find similar matches.

I must be losing my mind! I swear that there was discussion on here in the
past few weeks about an extension for MapInfo Pro dealing with creating home

inbox and the directionsmag site and can't find the email. Could someone
help?

Good grief! The general public is finding out what we've all known for quite

Naz,

I've just come across a new tool posted on DirectionsMag
http://www.directionsmag.com/files/index.php/view/629 that will bend text to
a curved line or region object. You have to enter the text manually rather
then using an attribute of a feature, but it works okay in a map window (not
for layouts though). It lacks some of the control features you might get in
a DTP packages, but it's a start and I can seeing it being useful.

MI-L Custom line styles created using MI Line Style Editor v2.0

2005-02-03 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
In the past I've created some new lines styles using the line style editor
provided by MapInfo. The other day I realised that I hadn't updated the
line styles after I'd upgraded to MI v7.8. So I copied my custom line style
file replacing the default MapInfow.PEN file installed when I upgraded.
Everything worked fine until the next morning when I powered up the PC, ran
MapInfo and found that the custom line styles had disappeared. So I checked
the MapInfow.PEN file and the one I'd copied over had been replaced by the
default one. Just to check I went through the same process again yesterday
(replacing the PEN files) and the same thing has happened this morning.
Seems like the .PEN file is reset every time the PC is powered-up (the PC is
running Windows XP).

Anyone else come across this problem? I presume I'm going about this the
right way, replacing the MapInfow.PEN file with my custom line style file,
as it's always worked this way in the past.

Thanks in advance.

Greg Driver.

Looking at your code the last for..next loop will close ALL open tables
because you not testing if the inUse() flag has been set for each table. If

tables are closed):

For i = 1 to numtabs

close table TableNames(i)

Inserting a pdf in a desktop publishing software isn't the smartest
solution. We have investigated it and renounced because Acrobat distiller
was only exporting to standard size and won't work with some of the small
maps we had to output for the atlas. Anyway, MapInfo is nice as long as
you are printing directly from the layout page. If you need to insert your
maps elsewhere it doesn't work well. If I have to edit a new atlas I may
look for another software specializing in thematic maps.

Dear Christiane,

concerning the missing export formats I agree with you that GIF is
missing.
However, if you want to have a very good output, the best solution is to
use
Adobe Acrobat Distiller and to create a pdf copy. WMF is not bad but you
may
have problems with symbols if you open the wmf file on another computer

Why do you want to create a JPG file ?
JPG files are good for photography, but not really good for graphics and
maps because you will never get clear lines and clean limits to your
poligons, there will always be some smearing due to the compression
algorithm. The best exporting format if you want a raster compressed format
would be GIF. Too bad that MapInfo doesn't offer that. In the absence of GIF
I tend to export TIFF files and to convert the TIF to GIF in Photoshop when
I need a compressed file. This method could perhaps solve your problem if
it's a memory problem and assuming that additional memory is needed to
compress the file to jpg.

We are currently preparing an atlas and after intense testing of different
workflow with our external printer, we finally decided to export WFM files
(aka vector files), because the rasterizing was causing a great loss of
quality, even when exporting to non compressed TIFF.

After all these experiences, I came to the conclusion that the exporting
formats offered in MapInfo are lacking. Another big flaw is the color
management : MapInfo should be able to handle CMYK color palettes. We are
having big trouble with our printer concerning colors.

MI-L New tool - vectors from raster images

2004-11-26 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
Just come across a nifty new tool on DirectionsMag that I thought people
might be interested in as it's a something that crops up on the list every
now and then:

Title - Vectors from georeferenced rasters -
http://www.directionsmag.com/files/index.php/view/618

Description - Extraction of region objects from georeferenced raster images.
Colour band can be selected and tolerances set. Output is a region object on
the Cosmetic layer
Author - Tony Pilkington.

I guess it'll be really useful if you have classified images, like land
cover, as you can create regions based on the pixel values.

Thanks to Tony for making it freely available.

Greg.

RE: MI-L Grid squares from points

Dan,

There is a way to do it without writing a MapBasic app. Open the mapbasic
window in MapInfo and enter the following lines (where mytable = name of
your table):

Set coordsys table mytable
Update mytable set obj =
mbr(createline(centroidx(obj),centroidy(obj),(centroidx(obj)+1000),(centroid
y(obj)+1000)))

This will replace the point objects in your table with region objects so it
might be worth saving a copy of your table as a backup!

You could use the following:

PathToFileName$(tableinfo(1,19))

This will return just the tab file name. Using tableinfo(1,19) will give

I found similar behaviour with table names:
If I create a table with long name, let's say
C234567890123456789012345678901234567890.TAB, MapInfo truncates the name
for the internal use to 30 characters, e.g.
C23456789012345678901234567890! The actual file name is not altered.
TableInfo(1,1) also returns C23456789012345678901234567890 (supposing only
1 table is open).
Is there any other function that will return the true name?

Delphi 4 examples that work. They work in Delphi 7, but I haven't tried
them in Delphi 8.

All,

It's a long shot but does anyone have any thoughts on the management of data
layers within groups in MapInfo? I'll try and explain a little better...

MapInfo's layer control when it contains more than 20 or so layers gets a
little tedious when trying to search for a specific layer to turn on or off.
Having layer groups that you could expand/collapse at will would be better,
like...

ENVIRONMENTAL
Hedgerows
Tree Preservation Orders
Wild Foul Site
ENGINEERING
Bridges
Structures
Kerb
WATER
Pipes
Lakes
Streams

etc, etc...

I think that ArcView operates this kind of 'legend' facility as do a number
of web apps like Autodesk MapGuide but has anyone looked at this in MapInfo,
any tools available in the community? I remember that Juan Pufleau made a
stab at an alternative to the layer control called LAYRTOOL.mbx but it
basically creates a button for every layer you have open allowing you to
toggle it on and off. Its useful but not quite what I'm looking for.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

GML stands for Geographic Markup Language. It's actually a geographic
implementation of the XML (Extensible Markup Language) format. And XML is
simply a way to structure information using bracketed tags in a plain text
format. You can learn all about it at http://www.w3.org/XML/.

XML is coming on strong, too. You'll be seeing a lot more of it in the
future.

I guess it's going to be a simple find and replace routine in which

MI-L Save Window As command

2004-06-23 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
Listers,

I'm messing around with the Save Window command and I've a small query
regarding the 'default' image size and layouts. When I use the statement
I'm specifying the image type and the resolution but not the image
height/width, as I'm taking the 'default' image size (which is the size of
the original window according to the MapBasic Ref Guide).

This is fine for a map window but for a layout window I was expecting the
image size to equate to the paper size of the layout window, but it doesn't
seem to be working like this though! An A4 layout comes out at 1264x894
pixels ( 10.7 x 7.57cm) rather than 3507x2480 pixels (29.7x21cm). Altering
the size of the layout window within MapInfo (not the paper size but the
actual MapInfo window) doesn't effect the size of the saved image either (as
is true for a map window, as I would expect).

Am I wrong in thinking the default image size for a layout should be the
same as the paper size of the layout? If I can't use the default image size
for a layout window and have to specify the image size to match the paper
size, how do I go about finding the physical paper size of a layout?

RE: MI-L Rotated Map Window

Brian,

I've just done a little test, rotated a window containing a single layer and
saved the results as a workspace. I re-opened the workspace and it restored
the rotation in the map window no problem. You can check your workspace,
look for the Set Map CoordSys command as this should include the affine
transformation that sets the rotation of the map window (it should be the
same as that displayed in the message window when the map window was first
rotated). Have you got a raster image in the map window as this may cause
problems as raster images can't be rotated?

RE: MI-L Cloning Layout Windows

2004-05-12 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
I coded a little utility awhile back to clone (only) layout window but I've
only just put it on DirectionsMag (It's called CloneLayout.mbx!). I did it
the long way though, as I wasn't aware of the Run Command
WindowInfo(frontwindow(),15) shortcut!

RE: MI-L ReDim size limit

2004-04-22 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
I take your point and it's something I'd realised after my original post, to
limit the selection or at least get the user to enter part of the value so
as to restrict the search (as Peter Horsbøll Møller commented). The reason
I'd gone down my original route was that I thought it would be easier for
our users if they where presented with a list of unique values for a chosen
table/column, rather than them having to have the correct spelling etc.

Just messing about really, I'll probably be the only one who'll end up using
the tool, if I get round to finishing it (nearly there).

Thanks for everyone's time though, I appreciate it.

MI-L ReDim size limit

2004-04-22 Thread Driver, Greg 9434
Listers,

Is there anyway around the ReDim size limit of 32767? I'm doing a SQL
select to find all the unique values for a given column and then populating
an array with all these values, which is then used in a dialog popupmenu
control. Problem is that some of our tables could well contain more than
32767 unique values so how do I get around this?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Regards

Greg Driver
