MI-L Universal Translator

I am trying to import an ACAD drawing into MapInfo 6.5 using Universal
Translator.  However, it is giving the message 'Translation failed' and the
following appears in the Log.  


FME_GEN_DEST_GROUP_NAME_PREFIX statement must be of the form
'FME_GEN_DEST_GROUP_NAME_PREFIX '
Program Terminating

Translation FAILED.
Unable to generate mapping file.


Can anyone shed any light???

Hello Patrick,

The error you encountered occurs because the UT does not recognise the space 
character within the filename you are trying to translate.

Simply rename the ACAD file and take out the space before translating to 
MapInfo TAB\MIF format.

eg. file name.cad => filename.cad

Have anyone used UT in a "batch" mode ( fex "Ut.exe p1 p2 p3"  - records in a BAT file)

Hi, I've managed to get the universal translator command line version working, thanks 
to this forums help.
 One problem I've got is there is a tab file created for each layer in the DWG file.
 Is there any way to have the UT create just one file from the DWG file. If not is 
there any way to have the tab files
 that are created named with the DWG name and then the layer name. At the moment they 
are just being named
 as per the layer names.

MI-L Universal Translator

I tried using UT from MapInfo for DGN to MapInfo conversion.

I first converted a known mapinfo tab with attributes to dgn and the again
converted the same to mapinfo tab. But I notice two  problems:

1. It does not bring the co-ordinates
2. The attributes are also not converted.

How do I get both?

MI-L Universal Translator

Hi Everyone

I am running MapInfo 5.5.  I am finding out that the Universal Translator
will not translate files that are in State Plane CA Zone IV Datum 1983 units
in feet.  Has anyone had this problem, and if so how did they fix it.  Is
this a MapInfo problem and if so have they fixed it or put out a patch?  I
never had this problem in 4.0 or 4.5.  Is it possible for me load 4.5's
translator as a separate program.
I am sorry for all the questions I am very frustrated and trying to avoid
buying another program.

I would appreciate any help.

MI-L Universal Translator

I have been having problems converting E00 to Tab files. I am using MapInfo
6.5 on Windows 2000. The Universal Translator works fine for lines but when
I try to translate a E00 file that contains points all I end up with is the
bounding rectangle and the four tics. I do still have 6.0 on another
computer and am able to do the translation but would like to do it in 6.5.

Title: Universal Translator






Hi all,


I'm having trouble converting some shapefiles to tab files and don't know why.  I am able to convert some of them no problem, but others are failing.  I printed out a sucessful log and failed log to compare the difference and everything seems to be running fine until the translator tries to open the convert tab file.  Below is the error message.  

MapInfo file 'F:\IHA Teams\MapInfo\Public\Mapping Projects\Public Health\Mosquito\CDC_SENS_OKHR_arc.tab' could not be opened.  Check that file path name is valid.  Also check for adequate disk space. Also ensure that the total record length for all the attributes is less than 4096 bytes

FME Session Duration: 16.8 seconds. 



Program Terminating


Translation FAILED.


There is enough disk space, and I think the file path name should be right, so I'm thinking it must be the total record length is more than 4096 bytes.  Does anyone know how to check this, or have any other thoughts on why the translation isn't working?  Thanks in advance!

As far as I know, the UT is actually a version of FME from SAFE software 
(www.safe.com).

You can download a delphi source code from my web site under the Download
page.
Showing how to use the command line utility of UT for converting Tab to
Shape.
Prehaps this can give you an idear on how to fix your problem with
microstation files.
You could 'easely', I think..., develop a converting loop doing all 24000
files in one run.

My sample application is call Tab2Shp.

MI-L Universal translator tool

I am trying to translate some ESRI shape data into Mapinfo MID/MIF format,
but the translator fails due to an "unknown geometry", which has no meaning
to me.

Does anyone have an idea what may be amiss? I did translate a whole bunch of
data files a couple of days ago, and had no problem. (Unfortunately lost the
log file of that translation). I translate from SHP format to MID/MIF and
then import the MID/MIF files into MapInfo (V. 4.5). Going from SHP to TAB
directly gives me - according to the manual - V. 3.0 type tables.However,
the translation fails in either case, directly to TAB, or first to MID/MIF.

MI-L Universal translator - multipoint

Hi Listers,
 
When translating a MI Tab to a ESRI shp file, the result is sometimes a
"multipoint" shape file. I presume this occurs when there is more than
one point at a specific location. Anyone know of a way to prevent a
"multipoint" file translation by UT or a way to change the resultant
shape file?

A last attempt to draw any comments from the forum:

Is anyone aware of a problem with the UT tool in connection with MI V 4.5?
Certain SHP files do not want to be converted to either MIF or TAB format.
Has anyone experienced similar problems and found a solution? Is it a bug in
MI 4.5, or must the problem be found in the SHP files? I have been
successful in converting loads of SHP files with no problem at all. It is
just that some of them don't want to go.

Appreciate any reaction in this matter.

I'll have to begin this by stating that ESRI's projection
system for coverages was not the most intelligently implemented
thing in the world.  Some of the things in it are downright
ridiculous.  But the UT failed to recognize one of these
ridiculous things, contributing to a lot of grief for me.

I was working on a project where I was supposed to deliver
products in both MapInfo and ESRI formats.  So, after 
getting all the data shipshape in MapInfo, I converted
all of the TAB files to shapefiles.  Simple thing, right?

Wrong.

For one thing, some of my datasets had rather long field names
(required).  So, converting those datasets to shapefiles, which
have dBase IV's upper limit of 10 characters per field name, was out.
I imagined I could just convert them to .E00 files and the client 
could import them into coverages or whatever. Problem solved, right?

Wrong again.  And this is where the ridiculous thing comes into
play.

Since my datasets were photogrametrically derived and had implied 
topological relationships with each other, I had to tune the MapInfo
projection using Bounds clauses.  So my Maryland State Plane coordinate 
system clause became

MI-L Universal translator problem

I'm trying to convert a .tab file to ESRI's e00 format. The translation
fails with the error message

Could not find an E00 mapping for datum of coordinate system `OSGB'

in the log file. Any ideas how to fix this?

MI-L Universal Translator Problem?

Hi folks:

I'm in a bind.

Runing MI 6.0 and Winders 2000.

Attempting to use UT to convert .shp files to .tab or .mid/mif.

Problem is that when the PROJECTION button is selected the computer becomes
confused.  Nothing works but the "bell".  UT disappears, MI locks up.

Solution is to ctrl/alt/del bring up Task Manager and stop UT which is
attempting its "projection" thing.

MI then quits of its own accord.

Any hints?

MI-L Universal Translator Glitch

I'm using MI 5.5 and have had good success with the universal translator
generally.  But I'm at my wit's end on this one.

I have some shape files in Washington State Plane coordinates.  When
I try to translate them wth UT it aborts and leaves a log file with these
lines in it:

FME does not support MapInfo unit type
`survey' -- assuming default of METER
Invalid value found in MapInfo Coordinate System Definition `coordsys
earth projection 3, 33, "survey ft", -120.83, 47, 47.5,
48.73, 1640416.666999, 0'

The files translate if I lie and set the projection to meters.  But
of course the data ends up on the other side of the country.  

So what's the secret?

MI-L Universal Translator API?

Can I program Universal Translator with MapBasic or with some other 
language? I need to import shape files on a fairly regular basis and I 
would like to get it down to a single menu item.

There may be some database table fields that are greater in length than 254 
characters.
Also, you mave have too many fields that are of 254 characters.
I receive files like this all of the time, the way to get them to work is 
to restructure the .DBF file included with the shape files.
I use Visual Foxpro to do this. I will open the .dbf file of the offending 
shape file a modify the structure there. You can use other programs that will 
open a .dbf file to modify the structure.
Many times the table will contain fields that have way more characters than 
necessary.
Social Security fields, Phone Number fields, Addresses, States, Provinces, 
etc.
Reduce the field size to something realistic and workable and you might get 
the shape file to work.

Thanks to those who 
replied to my problem!  Turns out the attribute fields were too large as 
most of the fields were a character length of 254.  I took out many fields 
and adjusted the rest to make sure the file was small enough to translate and it 
worked perfectly.  Thanks again

[MI-L] Universal Translator Issues

Hey List,
        I'm
having some issues with the Universal Translator.  Im converting AutoCad
DWG files to Tab.

I've tried it with the UT that shipped
with both MI Professional versions 8.0 and 8.5

8.0 is fairly accurate but I get several
artefacts, including 
        a
large number of parallel lines which are several thousand times longer
that the actual drawings.  They all start in a section of the drawing
fairly close together.
        some
arcs which are only noticeable at a fairly close level of zoom
        various
point data and text scattered around the work area a great distance away
from the drawing

8.5 completes the translation but is
completely meaningless.  All that comes through is point data all
but two of which are at the same location.

I spoke to the CAD department who looked
over the areas with the issues and they found nothing.  I have a theory
that the parallel lines are the UT not being able to handle an AutoCad
object type that someone used when creating their portion of this drawing.
 Which is why it is localised.

The files that the CAD guys are using
are microstation, these don't even complete the translation.  The
file originates in 3D but is 'Exported' to AutoCad 2D.

Anyone got any ideas on what is going
on here?  Or suggestions on what I can do to get a 'clean' translation.

Just an update on this issue.  Firstly
thanks to those who replied.
Bill states below quite clearly that their
is an issue with UT setting the bounds too low, which causes features to
be stacked on the same point.

Stephanie's response was
The fix is don't convert the autocad file
directly into a .tab file,
convert it into a .mif then use a text editor to change the boundaries
in
the .mif file, then import it into MapInfo. Yes this is a very tedious
process if there are a lot of layers in the .dwg file.

This has worked out reasonably well, I wasn't
aware of this format/functionality and found that the .mif file format
was quite intuitive.  So I wrote an application that reads the file
and purges the information that Im not interested in.  This gets me
about 90% of the way, at which point I just do a manual delete of any more
features that I don't want.

I got some follow up emails from Dale Lutz
regarding the issues with UT, safe is investigating the issue so heres
hoping for a fix.

What is the Coordinate system or Projection used by
the CAD files sent to
you?
If you translate from an external format (DXF, DWG, DGN, etc) to TAB format
and do not select any specific projection, the result TAB files will be
set
to Non-Earth (meters) system using a default set of bounds that is only
10
meters across.

MI-L Universal Translator not working

Hi,

I'm trying to convert some MapInfo .tab files to ESRI shapefile using the 
Universal Translator.  All .tab files open up in MapInfo no problem.  Most of 
the files I'm trying to do this with have worked, but a few have not.  I don't 
see any consistancy with those that convert and those that don't.  The log is 
found below and is says "no specified layers were found".  What does this mean?

A few weeks ago I sent in a message about a problem with the Mapinfo
Universal Translator Tool. I've received one reaction from Uffe Kousgaard
who told me to try other SHP2MIF translators on his website. I tried both of
them, but they did not work for me. I then set to work with another part of
my dataset (SHP files) and the translator Tool worked fine for loads of
data.

Now I am back at the original data set and again things don't work. It might
be a glitch in the SHP files I am using, but I wouldn't know where to start
looking. I have tried many different data files but none of them seems to
want to be translated, either to MID/MIF or to MI-TAB files. I've rerun
translations on the files that did translate properly and they still do. How
does one find out if the SHP files are corrupted, if so?

I'll list two entries from the logfile that's produced when one uses the
Translator Tool, one of a successful run and one of a non-successful run.

A MultiPoint object is a collection of 2 or more points combined into a single object.

My guess is that you have some of these objects in your table. You might find using

Hello Laurence,

In Pro v7.0 (and presumably v7.5 too), the Universal Translator converts all
points into Shapefile multi-point features. Before v7.0, you get simple
points as expected. This change was a bit of a pain as if you suddenly
substitute a point layer with a multi-point layer, it can crash ArcView 3.x
as the project file is loaded. The work-around it to use the UT from before
Pro v7.0.

A. Previous versions (pre MI 7.0) of Universal Translator create simple
point shape files. Version 7.0 creates multipoint which can crash
ArcView 3.x.

I ran into problems with large files (Ontario lakes at 1:10/20K).  I
don't recall the error message.  I found another [older] translator (on
the Mapinfo-L site?) which worked fine.

As for the problem I assume it rests with UT.  It persists to at least
the MI V6 release.

A last attempt to draw any comments from the forum:

Is anyone aware of a problem with the UT tool in connection with MI V

Certain SHP files do not want to be converted to either MIF or TAB
format.
Has anyone experienced similar problems and found a solution? Is it a

MI 4.5, or must the problem be found in the SHP files? I have been
successful in converting loads of SHP files with no problem at all. It

just that some of them don't want to go.

Are you running Vertical Mapper with MapInfo?  If so, this sounds like a
bug with VM version 2.x or less - solution is your fix, uninstall VM, or
upgrade VM.

Hi folks:

I'm in a bind.

Runing MI 6.0 and Winders 2000.

Attempting to use UT to convert .shp files to .tab or .mid/mif.

Problem is that when the PROJECTION button is selected the computer
becomes
confused.  Nothing works but the "bell".  UT disappears, MI locks up.

Solution is to ctrl/alt/del bring up Task Manager and stop UT which is
attempting its "projection" thing.

MI then quits of its own accord.

Any hints?

Thanks Folks:

Am also running Vertical Mapper 2.1.x.

Guess it does a little more than I want.

My fix is short and quick.

With MI already open,

double click on any .tab file in winders explorer, causes second MI to open.

VM will load w/only one MI thus no VM w/second one.

WA  L UT and Projection works fine with the MI w/o VM.

I never wodda thunk it.

Hi Joseph!

Unit names in MapInfo is a sensitive business, as my recent experiences
in the MLC project of Mr Jacques Paris goes to prove. Apparently, these
are language dependent and identified by string comparison.

In your case, maybe MapInfo would accept the unit name 'US Survey feet'
as this is how that unit is displayed in the distance units selector in
MapInfo.

To Richard - 

The Universal translator is a stand-alone program "\professional\ut\imutgui.exe" that's started from a mapbasic
program. The "imutgui.exe" is a Windows front-end for the command-line
program "\professional\ut\imut.exe". 

"imut.exe" can be run outside the MapInfo environment.
You can control "imut.exe" by feeding it parameters and a reference to a
FME-Macro  on
the command-line. Because "imut.exe" is a scaled down version of the
FME-translator (www.safe.com) is it  possible to control imut.exe
with the some of the same parameters you use in FME. You can download the
full
documentation to FME from www.safe.com, including the chapter on
translations using the command-line program.

There is some caveats:

1) A _lot_ of the feature functions and factories from the original
FME-program  has been disabled.

2) Coordinate translation "inside" imut.exe has been disabled 

What you _can_ do:

1) Use imut.exe from the command-line, ie. from bat-files or start it from
mapbasic or other programs.

2) Write your own (limited) fme macros

If you search the ..\ut  directory (and subdirectories) you'll find many
snippets of fme control-macros, that is used by MapInfo.

A warning - the fme control language _is_ a bit cryptic

I have successfully

What is the version of the tables that fail ? Are the tables that fails in 
general another version than the tables that translate ok
?

Just open the TAB file in notepad and look at the second line.

Your UT notes "20020403" as its build date, a rather old version it seems.

The command line part of UT is a exe-file called imut.exe. imut.exe is a
scaled down version af Safe Software's FME data translation tool. You can
feed imut.exe with the same kind of commandline options as FME. You can
download documentation for FME from www.safe.com and use this documentation
for imut.exe. Just remember, there is a _lot_ of options and functions in in
FME, that doesn't exist in imut.exe

   I posted a description of how to use the Universal Translator on the 
command line about 2 years ago.

Here is the posting from 03/20/2001:

LOG_STANDARDOUT YES +ID - some UT variables for logging
"wetland" - input file name, quotes are important
This will create a file called format.dat which contains all of the
information UT needs
to map from the Mapinfo file "wetland" to the Shape file.
STEP 2: Do the translation
The next step in the process requires a control file you have to create
yourself.
I called this file doimut.dat

The path should match the one used in the generate STEP 1

and it worked out fine.

I analysed the SHP files in detail and found that there are problems with
them. At this stage it's too early to say anything is wrong with the UT
tool. ArcExplorer also struggles with my data.

I ran into problems with large files (Ontario lakes at 1:10/20K).  I
don't recall the error message.  I found another [older] translator (on
the Mapinfo-L site?) which worked fine.

As for the problem I assume it rests with UT.  It persists to at least
the MI V6 release.

I ran into problems with large files (Ontario lakes at 1:10/20K).  I
don't recall the error message.  I found another [older] translator (on
the Mapinfo-L site?) which worked fine.

As for the problem I assume it rests with UT.  It persists to at least
the MI V6 release.

MI-L universal translator command line arguments

has anyone got a list of all the command line argument values for use
with imut.exe (universal translator) and their meaning.

I want to access imut.exe  (not the imutgui.exe user interface)  from
mapbasic using run command with the correct argument values for
mappingFile translations, I guess they are contained in the *.db files
in UT directory.

MI-L Universal translator with false origins

Hi, everyone,

I'm trying to translate some files from dxf and shp file format to tab
format. The projection provided for both dxf and shp files is Lambert
conical Orthomorthic with one standard parallel. False coordinates of
the origin are 250,000m easting and 150,000m northing.

I'm not sure how to handle the false origin when translating. Any
insight would be greatly appreciated.

MI-L Universal Translator set projection problem

I have some .shp files that I am trying to convert to .tab files using
the Universal Translator on a PC with NT4 and MapInfo 6.5.  I tell the
UT where a .shp file is located and then click on the Set Projection
button to, er, set the projection.  However, rather than the usual
dialogue that I expect to see I get a message saying 'MapInfo 4.5 or
greater must be running to use the choose projection dialogue'.

If I ignore this then the translation is successful but the result is
Non-Earth.

Any suggestions?

MI-L Universal Translator and Windows NT4

A quick follow-up on the Universal Translator / NT4 question. I have
installed MapInfo on two NT4 machines (with administrator rights) and it
was a success. It seems
though that the problem hasn't been solved on our client's side. So if
someone, by any chance, heard of something more that could cause such
problem (Universal
Translator not loading), would you let me know?

MI-L Universal Translator AutoCAD 2000 import

Does anyone know if the Universal Translator supports AutoCAD 2000?  Or DXF
produced by AutoCAD 2000?

If not, what is the most recent release of AutoCAD output that the UT can
import?  I am running MI 6.0 but am about to upgrade to 6.5 - will that make
a difference?

Need help projecting a map table.
 
I downloaded a shapefile for California PLSS townships and sections  from
_http://gis.ca.gov/meta.epl?oid=298_ (http://gis.ca.gov/meta.epl?oid=298) 
which says the projection is Albers NAD97.
 
I have tried running it through Universal Translator with variations on  
North American Coordinate Systems: Albers Equal-Area Conic(North America) and  
Albers Equal-Area Conic(Continental U.S.), with no luck.
 
Can someone point me in the right direction?

MI-L Universal Translator vs. Open as "Type"

I am developing a process which will convert large volumes of Shape files
into MapInfo format.  The nature of this effort requires this conversion to
occur in a batch mode.
 
Essentially there are 2 methods to make the data usable in MI
 
1) Using the UT which creates the .tab, .dat, .id & .map files  (Other list
postings indicate a method is available to run from a command line.)
 
2) Opening the file directly from MI 
Register Table "xxx.SHP" TYPE SHAPEFILE Charset "WindowsLatin1"
CoordSys Earth Projection 1, 33  
PersistentCache On regionstyle Pen (1,2,0) Brush
(2,16777215,16777215) Into "xxx.TAB"
 
 which creates the .tab, .id and .map files\
 
The resulting files serve as a nationwide (tiled be state) set of data
layers used in ongoing large volume map production
 
What I am trying to determine, from a performance perspective, are the
advantages and disadvantages of each approach.  Any insights would be much
appreciated

Many thanks to Bill Wemple and George Smith for their help.

I opened the mapinfow.prj file in a text editor, and edited the
parameters of the Regional Conformal (North America) listing, changing
the false easting, false northing, and origin coordinates. (Parameters
for each projection category is under Appendix F of the MI Reference
Guide.)

MI-L Universal Translator Shape to Tab file

Hi list:

No problems going from tab to shape.  However, when projection is selected
when going from shape to tab computer goes bonkers.  Have to use task
manager to stop MI and UT.

Solved this, with your help, about a year ago.  Mind and gone dim on this.

MI-L Universal Translator and Windows NT 4

Hello to all,

Has anyone encountered any problems with the autoload of Universal
Translator, using MIP 6.0 and Windows NT 4.0? Here’s the situation:
After uninstalling and reinstalling MIP (typical), Universal Translator
is not listed any longer in the Tool manager. Once added (Add Tool), and
the Loaded and Autoload options checked, it works fine until exiting
MapInfo and opening it again. U.T. has not been autoloaded and must be
added again  using the Tool manager.

I could add a Run Application… line to the startup.wor, but what I am
really looking for is the reason for this other strange behaviour of
MIP. Would anyone know where MapInfo stores the information to load or
not load Universal Translator?

Any hint to an answer would be greatly appreciated!

daunting as it seemed.
 
I tried your line as written, and California was shifted about 2,900 miles  
northward.  I played with the False Northing until this worked:
 
"Albers California Custom (CASIL)", 9, 62, 7, -120, 40.5, 34, 40.5, 0,  275800
 
Looks like the metadata's False Northing was untrue.

idea, slightly different parameters.  Can't recall the file/data set or
source, maybe Teale...

The final working projection was:
 
"Albers California Custom (CASIL)", 9, 62, 7, -120, 0, 34, 40.5, 0,  -400
 
It worked in UT, and as well as opening the shapefile file directly from  the 
menu with File Open, specifying file type ESRI shapefile, and selecting the  
projection. (MIPro 7.0).
 
That is formerly Teale data at _http://gis.ca.gov/_ (http://gis.ca.gov/)   
Lots of free California  map data there.

Parts of mutlog.txt :

Check that file path name is valid.

MI-L Universal translator:- cant select certain files/directories

I am trying to convert a .tab file to an ESRI shp file but am having a
problem with Universal translator in MI 7.5.

 

When I try to select the file in question, neither the file or the directory
it is in are available to select. I realise that several of my data
directories are unavailable for selection. 

If I type the path manually, the process starts then fails.

 

Have  emailed the file in question to a friend running older ver. Of MI and
translation went without a hitch. 

 

Can anybody help with this situation?

Hello!

Thank you to all who responded to my question, some even before it was posted!
The answers were numerous and very detailed.
This question had been asked on behalf of one of our clients and we haven't had
much follow up on the topic ourselves. The precious information that you all
brought was faithfully transmitted but from what I understand, the client hasn't
been able to solve the problem by giving administrator rights to the user thus
allowing full access to MAPINFO.WOR and MAPINFO.PRF, the THMTMPLT folder and the
REGINFO.INI file. Maybe at this point is it only a communication problem? Well I
haven't had time to test all this myself on an NT machine, but it will be done
shortly. We use Windows 2000 here and never had such problem.

Updates on the topic will follow!

I had a problem with SDTS files but it was the result of winzip.
The files came in a tar files: I had to unselect smartCR/LF conversion in
configuration.

The error you discribe was similar to the one I received.

Hi Patrick

The translator from SHP to MapInfo works perfect, but I have a problem with it, 
because it removes "Tool" unctionality from MApInfo and replaces by your "Tools" 
functionality. Meaning I'm no longer able to use the other functionalities on MapInfo 
"Tools" dropdown.

Will you fix this. I think changing the Icon Name from "Tools" to "Translator" can 
solve this problem.

I choose Harris county DGN format.  The data is saved in the Shackleford
Projection described here:

I added the Shackleford projection to Mapinfo .prj file as indicated here:

I am trying to convert a .tab file to an ESRI shp file but am having a
problem with Universal translator in MI 7.5.

 

When I try to select the file in question, neither the file or the directory
it is in are available to select. I realise that several of my data
directories are unavailable for selection. 

If I type the path manually, the process starts then fails.

 

Have  emailed the file in question to a friend running older ver. Of MI and
translation went without a hitch. 

 

Can anybody help with this situation?

Hello Jay,

I believe what you got as the script for the .prj file maybe be different
then what is required for the TxDot file.

I believe the corrected version would be:
   
 "Shackelford Conformal Conic(NAD27)", 3, 62, 3, -100, 31.167, 
 27.4167, 34.9167, 300, 300
   
 The 3 after the 62 is for unit.  Which should be international feet and not   
 meters (7).  Also if I'm correct, the false easting and northing values   
 should be in the same unit.   
   
 Try that and let me know if it works or not.  You may also want to leave the  
 false easting and northing as it was before, thus giving you: 
   
   
 "Shackelford Conformal Conic(NAD27)", 3, 62, 3, -100, 31.167, 
 27.4167, 34.9167, 914400, 914400

Hi Jay

The Universal translator is a different program then Mapinfo, it's just activated by 
an mbx... Whatever you add in Mapinfo Projection .prj file will not be included in 
Universal translator, but will be in the import function of Mapinfo only...

The files for projection are in .DB in the Mapinfo\professional\UT directories...

I don't know how familiar you are with the Universal translator wich is a smaller 
version of FME made by SAFE. For more information you can check their WEB site at 
WWW.SAFE.CCOM you may also ask for an evaluation copy of the software.

You can use the universal translator and import the file as non-earth meters to a 
MID/MIF and then use the IMPORT and overide the Non-earth in the MID/MIF telling it to 
use the Shackleford projection you made in the .prj file...

I made an eror when I said that the projection of the Mapinfo .prj was not the same. 
Thanks to Bill from Mapinfo who explained how it works. Sorry for the mistake;(

Here's the content of the explanation I received:

The UT does in fact use the mapinfow.prj file.  Anytime you hit the projection button 
in the UT, you call a MapBasic ChooseProjection$() function, which directly accesses 
the mapinfow.prj file in the mapinfo program directly.  The resulting CoordSys string 
returned from that function is passed by the imutGUI.exe (via IMUT.exe) to the 
trnapi32.dll (a library we supply to SAFE) for creating TAB files.  If no CoordSys 
string is passed from this function, the resultant TAB file will be in Non-Earth, 
meters. Try running the imutgui.exe alone (MapInfo Pro is not running) and hitting the 
projection button, an error will be thrown that MI Pro 4.5 or later needs to be 
running in order to use the ChooseProjection$() function that imutgui.exe is trying to 
call to get those values. If you are translating SHP files to TAB format and you check 
the box for 'use projection setting in source file' (An ESRI Shpfile *.prj file), then 
the UT will attempt to match a set of MapInfo projection constants it has in its 
metafiles for passing to the trnapi32.dll to create the TAB files. That's the only 
time he UT doesn't have to rely on using the mapinfow.prj file directly.
