Re: MD: Best place to buy Sony MZR50 or 55 in Germany?

1999-12-13 Thread Matthias Schweinoch

Does anyone have a recommendation or knowledge of the best place to buy
a Sony MZR50 or 55 in Germany? I'm not sure whether or not the 50 is
 still available

AFAIK there are no MD specific vendors here in germany. your best bet will
thus be shops like SATURN or MEDIA MARKT. Media Markt will definitely be
less expensive! but you might want to check with more than one of those
shops. when i was looking into my sharp purchase, Media Markt in Essen sold
the 821 for about 700 DM, and Media Markt in Recklinghausen sold the same
for 650DM.

cheers,

Yamaha makes a "personal reciever" @RPU100 (or similar) that connects via
USB and offers some very interesting features for only $499.Digital optical

There is the sonicport optical, which retails for au$899 (sorry - don't
know
$us), or the Roland UA-100, about au$799. I don't really know the specs,
although the roland has a series of effects which allow you to use the box
separately as an effects box, it uses the Virtual Soundcanvas MIDI synth.
The Roland runs on an external power supply, I don't know about the
Sonicport. Roland has released a smaller version without the effects, but
i
don't know anything about it - it mightn't have an optical out.
I know that those two have optical outputs, there may be more i don't know
of.

RE: MD: Help w/ my Sony MDS-JE520

1999-12-13 Thread Rick Pali

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

After a long period of use today, my Sony MDS-JE520
 says an error message:

 AD - DA

does anyone know what that means?

That isn't an error message at all. It indicates a feature that will take an
incoming digital signal and convert it to analogue and at the same time
output it at 44.1Hz in case it's coming in at 48 or 32. Of course most any
unit will do this while recording but this "AD - DA" mode works when no disc
is in the unit.

If that is displayed after pressing record when a disc is in the unit, you
definitely have a problem...the player doesn't recognise that a disc is
present.

Yes, this is not an error message. It says it when you press record
and there is no disc loaded. I think it means "Analog-Digital,
Digital-Analog". But this is nothing to wory about.

MD: Name full

1999-12-13 Thread Joost de Meij

Metatron:

on my Sony deck, I received the 'Name Full !!!' message. I like to pack the
info in when titling, and with opera, you can really get carried away, but
to my amazement, this is the first time I've ever exceeded the limit. Just
wondered if anyone else had ever run out of space in normal use?

I recorded 130 minutes in mono on a 80 min MD. The tracks were all about
10/30 seconds (samples from TV/Radio), and some songs. And
i had about 180 tracks, and the 174th track gave the "Name Full!!"
message. I read in the sony folder that you can store 1700 characters
on a 74 min. MD. Is this the same on a 80 min MD?

Bye, Joost (Don't mind my bad English...)

Joost asked,

It would have to be, since the TOC is the same size; only the audio area is
larger.

Rick had explained,

 1) There are 255 "name blocks" available, each one able to hold 7
characters, so the absolute maximum for all tracks [plus the disc
name] combined is 255*7=1785 characters.

 2) The number of name blocks used by a track is:
(title characters+6)/7 (rounding quotient down to nearest integer).

So titling space is allocated in seven-character blocks. Thanks for the
word on that, Rick.

Subject: Re: MD: Build you own $100 Mics - Cheap!

Since the minidisc recorders have "plug in power" in the mike circuit,
you can simplify the circuit and eliminate the battery, resistors and
capacitors and wire the capsules directly. Also, sometimes it is more
convenient to not have to mess with cables. So, here is a T mike that I
designed http://www.tir.com/~liteways/Mandolin.html#Microphone

It may be a little easier to build. Take your pick. I don't know if
your capsules are the larger ones or the small ones, but the should be
able to work in either design.

These are the capsules you will need AND they are already MATCHED FOR
 YOU!

 Jeff

Jim there are some distinct ADVANTAGES to using the External Mike
Battery Power as described in Tidmarshs' article.

1). Internal MD mike power is low on most MD machines. The Microphone
sensitivity of electret Mics (almost always) goes down (by 1/2 or more!)
when using only the meager 1.5 Volts (or so) provided by the MD player
at the "MIC INPUT" on the MD recorder.

NOTE:The "MIC INPUT" is usually much more sensitive for "softer" source
material because it usually has an amplifier associated with it to pick
up those hard to hear sounds. This is good for soft music or lectures
and such.

2). You can record LOUDER sounds (those with MUCH HIGHER SPL -- Sound
Pressure Levels) using the Battery Box. This is because the Mic will not
distort as easily with loud sounds, because it has more voltage (9 volts
vs. 1.5) powering the Mic element, allowing better performance. Using a
Battery Box/Mic Combo plugged into the "LINE INPUT" (NOT the "MIC
INPUT"!) will give you a much better recording at any type of "loud"
concert or event where sounds are louder than "normal" and vary widely.

3). The DYNAMIC RANGE of the (un-powered) "LINE INPUT" (where you plug
the Mics battery box in) is SUBSTANTIALLY larger than that of the
(powered) "MIC INPUT". If you are going to do ANY type of recording
with a large dynamic range, you WANT to use the "LINE IN". But because
it does not supply power to the Mics like the "MIC IN" does, hence the
need for the added circuitry.

Using a battery box at a concert means that you can basically set the
recording level for the LOUDEST thing your gonna hear and set it
somewhere between -4 and 0 dB. Then put your MD in your pocket and
enjoy the WHOLE show.

Among the problems already mentioned, by using the "MIC INPUT", you will
be adjusting the recording levels every few seconds.

In closing, the merits of the PANASONIC WM6x mic capsules are well known
throughout the industry. That is why some companies use THESE Mic
capsules to make Mics that cost from 100 to over 200 dollars! People
"in-the-know" specify and use ONLY THE PANASONIC WM6x and use them by
the zillions!

The Mics (capsules) are about the size of a pencil eraser -- I think
it's something like 6 mm Diameter X 5mm for the WM60A's

MD: disc capacity (was-Re: Name Full!!!)

1999-12-13 Thread Steven Brooks

In reference to the part of the paragraph that's "carroted" (i.e.,
"...write over titling space to increase capacity") -- how would you go
about doing that? I'd love to fit in a few more songs, and often find the
74 minute capacity stifling, since I had grown up on and gotten used to
cassettes that were anywhere from 90 - 110 minutes long (if only that
capacity on MD) I go on hourlong runs or hour-and-a-half long runs
every once in awhile, and that 74 minutes just gets to be a little too
short...

So Rodney, back to the subject: about how many tracks do you commonly get
onto a disc before filling the titling space?

snip

I counted about 180 characters in that Jennifer Lopez track - so I'm
guessing about 9ish tracks (?) before filling all of the space. I wonder if
there's a way to increase titling space by writing onto the music area
(kinda the opposite to the trick where you write over titling space to
increase capacity).

MD: Fluctuations in remaining time

1999-12-13 Thread Steven Brooks

Sometimes, I find my deck at home (a 320) will, after a number of edits,
slicing, dicing, and moving, that the "total minutes" -- 74:59, seems to
diminish the more you edit. Let me explain more fully: If you have X
number of tracks, and you find you need to slice off about 5 seconds off of
3 tracks, due to your absentmindedness of leaving the minidisc unit
recording while your tape deck launched into the next song. This, of
course, means you need to take 15 seconds off altogether. Your disc reads
29:30 now (minutes left to record). You make the edits, and now find the
remaining time is 29:38, not the 29:45 you were expecting. So, in essence,
I am never guaranteed my 74:59 of recording time unless I make NO edits?

Casio never went out of business, they've been making digital watches,
pocket LCD color TV's, digital cameras, and keyboards as long as I can
remember. At least this is the case in the US. You can't shop for any
of those items without seeing at least one Casio.
If they made any shoddy equipment, it was probably their cheap Wal-Mart
quality digital cameras. I hardly ever see their digital cameras
anymore, but 2 years ago, they were the most plentiful.

Well, they've been going for years now - most of their business is in
watches and calculators. They also make digital cameras of varying quality.
The other products they make tend to be quite low-end budget items from

miles better than Texas Instruments.

So there you go. That's about all I know about Casio.

Given that the titling space is around 1700 characters, and on the
assumption that each character is represented by one byte (8 bits),
writing ATRAC audio in this space would allow an extra 1/20 of a second
of audio. Somehow I don't think it would be worthwhile going to the
effort of tricking a deck into using this space.

The tricks that allow extra recording time on blanks actually create TOC
entries that point to areas of the disc before and after the specified
74m 59s recording area. This means that the equipment is forced to read
from and write to the disc in areas beyond the normal specs for sled
travel and it can cause problems.
