MD: CD Reader

2000-03-01 Thread Faizal Y.

Maybe this plugin has been around for ages but i just gotta let everyone
know that it actually works.
The CDReader plugin for Winamp that was posted earlier works like a charm.
Using the plugin, you do not need a dedicated digital connection from the
CD-Rom drive to the souncard to get a digital out from a soundcard digital
output. In fact you don't even need an analogue out to get CD audio from the
drive. The plugin makes use of the data line to read the audio data and the
DAC in the soundcard is used to decode the signals.

Thanks for the interesting idea Hassan. I agree that a thin membrane

very cool. I'm forwarding your note to the MD mailing list. -Rick

Somebody out there should write some kind of program or design some piece of
hardware to allow MD users to use one of those hella cool folding keyboards
designed from use with PDA's. THat would be worth my money

My Ericsson mobile phone (GF768) and all new Ericsson phones have a plugin
keyboard about 10cm x 5cm to allow easy SMS. The same principles could
be applied to MD ... it would not be hard to design a similar system using the
remote input pins to accept the mini keyboard. The buttons are smallish but
well spaced so hitting a wrong button is rare (even easier to use with the end of a
pen) ... The mini keyboard could have direct connection to the MD unit or via
a short 10cm cable (so you can rest it on a desk or similar flat surface).
Cost ??? well the Ericsson mini keyboard is $50 AUD sometimes even free
with certain mobile plans. So at about $30 USD I think it'd sell like hotcakes!!

Just another idea for the marketing and research guys to work on. You would think
that a company as large as Sony would encourage ideas from it's users and at least
be "snooping" on this list cause THIS is where all the best ideas I've ever read
 regarding MD have come from

Just add a PS/2 interface to the portable and the problem is solved

They did it for the home-decks, why not for portables?

Cheers,

 no End-Search button.

Just add a PS/2 interface to the portable and the problem is solved
They did it for the home-decks, why not for portables?

AFAIK the keyboard draws power ... and although it maybe not
much, it might make a difference ... also for field recordings I'd rather carry
around a mini keyboard (like the Ericsson one I described) then carry a 101
(or even 88) key keyboard in my MD pouch. (Plus it'd double up duties for
my mobile phone SMS, if compatible).

I may not have made it perfectly clear, but I was referring to
portable recorders NOT home decks (which I do prefer to see PS/2 port or
some type of PC comms link - USB preferred).

Because Ericsson has joined with Psion to develop cross platform
communications, perhaps Sony should be looking at joining them
for products like this. (Similarly Nokia are working with Palm, Sony
could form an alliance with them).

Or maybe we should wait for WAP to take off.

For those who don't know what WAP is. Nokia describes it as:

WAP is the gateway to a new world of mobile data. It
provides a universal standard which enables users to easily
access Web-based interactive information services and
applications from the screens of their mobile phones.

These include both consumer and corporate solutions, like
e-mail, corporate data, news, sports and information
services, entertainment, TV/movies, travel, leisure, culture,
medical care, electronic commerce transactions and
banking services. This is only the beginning.

Nokia WAP
Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) provides a universal
open standard for bringing Internet content and advanced
Value Added Services to mobile phones and other wireless
devices. As such, WAP is at the heart of Total Connectivity
usage.

So who knows MD and WAP .. the way of the future ??
Plug your mobile into the MD ... dial CDDB WAP ... download
the song titles to the MD unit ... presto .. done for probably less then
a 30 sec mobile phone call which costs someone between $0.05
and $1.00 (totally dependant on service provider, time of day etc etc).
(Yeah, Yeah , I know this has some seriously flaws, but it's only
an idea !!)

Cheers GC

PS; I think the women would find the mini keyboard a lot
more sexier then your standard common garden variety 101
keyboard. :) :) hahahaha

MD: Prices of Minidiscs

2000-03-01 Thread Eoin Maguire

Hi all,

I've been reading with interest the prices for blanks being quoted on
this list and I have to say I'm amazed. I live in Ireland and in 90% of
cases America always has stuff for cheaper and sooner than we do. However,
for over a year now I've been able to go into Richer Sounds (a hi-fi shop)
and buy blank MDs for 99p, which equates to $1.21!! It would seem that that
price is something of an amazing offer in America etc, but over here I would
never pay any more than that. That said most other shops have decided that
"professional" blanks can be priced at anything from £3 - £5, but as we know
there's no difference that the average consumer would notice. The blanks I
get for 99p have been: Sony, TDK, Arita and most recently Hi-Space. I've
never had a problem with any of them.

Just thought I'd mention this as it is the first case of Ireland being
cheaper than America that I can remember!!

Eoin.

Hi Phil

I have heard of several people with similar problems to yours, and
the solution which seems to have worked for most people is to take
the unit apart and make sure that the ribbon cables inside the unit

Have a look at my website at http://www.btinternet.com/~ighorsey and

At 3/1/00 4:31 AM, Guy Churchill increased the world's knowledge by
typing:

I may not have made it perfectly clear, but I was referring to

Didn't I recently see something about Kenwood experimenting with adding
FireWire to a MD deck? I believe their goal was to have it completely
replace the current optical digital connections.

Imagine the possibilities of putting such an interface on all audio and
video equipment. (Many video cameras already have such an interface.) You
could connect your computer to your A/V setup letting you do amazing
stuff. For example, use the computer to title tracks, dump MP3s DIRECTLY
to MD, use MD Data disks to hold and display pictures on computer, TV, or
any other viewing device, or have the computer scan video signals for
certain topics and have the VCR (or DVD RAM) record the show, or record
that show you wanted after the football game *finally* ends, etc.

FireWire would also make a great independent standard. No more "I have to
buy a Sony to match the rest of my system."

Does anyone know if something like this is coming down the pike?

MD: Refurbished Sharp 702s

2000-03-01 Thread Link :-7

Hi List,

I just wanted to post a warning here about Refurbished Sharp 702s that
appear all over Ebay and other auction sites. These "things" have a 30 Day
Warranty and are NOT "Factory Refurbished". It's unfortunate for people
like the gentleman who has just experience problems with his refurb.

I'm sure in the long run, he will pay more to have that unit repaired than
he would have paid for a NEW Sharp 722.

The worst part of this whole situation is that people are buying up these
units because they are dirt cheap, but people pay anywhere between $150 and
sometimes $200 for a REFURB... I see this all the time on Ebay.

I try to keep an eye on it since I'm a Power Seller there. I don't know how
these units made it back out into the public, who is at fault. If anyone
knows any specifics on these units, let me know. This is about the 5th time
I've heard of someone experiencing problems with a refurb directly.

http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewListedItemsuserid=o3babyinclude=0since=-1sort=2rows=0

If anyone is interested in Sharp 821 US Model or some bulk amounts of discs,
let me know! Check out my auctions and feedback.

Stay away from those nasty refurbs. They are going to give MD a bad name if
we don't educate people.

Sincerely,

MD: lemoned-out 510 at Best Buy

2000-03-01 Thread David W. Tamkin

Best Buy lemoned out my remaining JE510, so now I have a credit to use toward
other stuff at Best Buy. I was considering another MD deck, though I have
more than enough already, but they carry only the 330 and the MXD-D3 (and no
non-Sony decks), neither of which I want. I'd have considered applying the
credit toward a 630 or a 930, but they have neither. The alternative is a CD
writer, so I guess I'll go for that. I haven't much use for one, but if I
don't use the lemon clause credit it's worth nothing to me, so it's really
like getting it only for the cash I'll need to add. I've no use for a CD-ROM
writer; it's gotten to the point where audio CDR's cost scarcely any more
than computer CDRs; and I figured that after one or two initial coasters I
will get the hang of it and not waste any more.

Can anyone recommend a good place to get a comparison between the Philips
CDR770 and the Pioneer PDR-509? Thanks. (If you have something to say about
those two units, please email me privately at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks.)

Thus ends my history with the MDS-JE510. I had two, and both were lemoned
out. For one Wards gave me trade-in credit toward a JE520, and now Best Buy
is giving me trade-in credit toward pretty much anything they sell. (Should
I take it out in CDs and blank MDs?)

What a footnote in MD lore the 510 turned out to be. It imprisoned discs,
refused to recognize closed write-protects, rattled and clattered, and turned
itself on more often than a thirteen-year-old boy.

 Yep, but
 1) does it draw power when it is not connected?

Of course not, but neither does the Ericsson CHA-01 Chatboard.
My question still stands though .. how much power does a 101 draw?

 2) I use the "typing blind with 10 fingers" system and not the "eagle" system. A
'large' keyboard is prefered for this.

True, large keys are better for this but even though there is 1's of people who
touch
type, there are many many more who do not. Afraid you are probably in the
population minority at the moment. The "hunt and peck" approach would
surely be faster then the scroll wheel on the R50 ... I got pretty good with the
scroll wheel but for most titling my combo of the 510 and Martins Winremote
is just perfect.

 3) It would be standard

When have Sony been worried about standards. ? :)

 4) There are PC keyboards that are as small as the Ericsson one.
 etc. etc. etc.

I'd be happy if you could point me towards one ... I'm especially
interested in the cost. $$$

Sony has already an alians with Palm in order to combine the Palm Pilot with the
 Memory Stick.

There is your answer ... MD connected to a Palm Pilot ... image the possibilities.
Drag and drop moves, titling, editing, timer record ... Yes a PalmV is expensive,
but I get the feeling that the type of person who gets seriously into MD is also
likely to want a PDA.

Cheers GC

This would bring a smile to someone's face "Is that a 101 keyboard in your pocket,

Subject: MD: 630 opinions?

Howdy. The Sony MDS-JE630 has dropped a bit in price at the local
store. Being it has digital record level and keyboard input, it
sounds like a fun upgrade, even before my current recorder dies.
Anyone have good or bad experiences with this baby?

I just got one. The keyboard port is fantastic! Some of the
interface is not as slick as my R50 however. No end-search that I
have found. No simple way to place a track mark (R50 has dedicated
button for this). No simple way to delete a track (R50 has dedicated
button for this). Not as simple to synchro-record with an optically
connected Sony CD player. So in some ways Sony has failed to deliver
on the simple to use interface of the R50, but... it does have the
keyboard and digital level control.

RE: MD: JE630

2000-03-01 Thread Richard Lang

I can't comment on the 630 because it isn't a model that is offered in New
Zealand but I have the JE-520, which seems to be a very similar model.

As I understand it the 520 doesn't need an "end-search" function because it
automatically seeks the end of the recorded section of any MD and starts
recording there when you push record. if you want to record over an
existing track you either erase it first or pause it at the point where you
want to start overwriting and push record then. I think this is a brilliant
function, since it stops you accidentally wiping stuff you want to keep on
an MD.

Track Marks are reasonably easy on the 520, while recording you just push
the record button again and it marks a new track. Admittedly adding track
marks to a recorded MD is a little harder, you go through the edit menu to
divide and divide the track, a similar process using combine to remove track
marks. I agree this would be easier if there was a single track mark button
for use during playbank or record.

For synchro recording, there is a button on the remote, which I have to say
is about the size of the deck!

I don't know if these have been omitted on the 630 but I'd be surprised if
they had since it's a "step-up" model.

As a p.s. I have had the 520 for a year or so and it has proved to be easy
to use and super reliable, as well as recording good sound (ATRAC 4.5 I
think). I heard the 510 was plagued with problems but the 520, so far, has
been brilliant.

Howdy. The Sony MDS-JE630 has dropped a bit in price at the local

So in some ways Sony has failed to deliver
on the simple to use interface of the R50, but... it does have the
keyboard and digital level control..

Re: MD: Refurbished Sharp 702s

I've had a couple of refurbished Sonys and I had no problem with them
at all.

Hey- refurb isn't so bad. I got an AIWA AM-F70 for only 183.00
(w/shipping) off Onsale.com. It hasn't given me any trouble more
than one disc error. I really like this unit, and I've had it for 7
months now, and you still cannot get it new for that price.

MD: Battery Box and Sony Mics

2000-03-01 Thread Lynch, Jason JD

Hi there,

I've just had a friend ask me if he could borrow my battery box to use with his MZ-R55
and Sony ECM-DS70P microphone.

I was wondering can you use a Battery box with a Sony mic, or will it damage it?

Thanks
Jason

Re: MD: JE630

2000-03-01 Thread David W. Tamkin

Richard Lang answered John Dasch,

| Track Marks are reasonably easy on the 520, while recording you just push
| the record button again and it marks a new track. Admittedly adding track
| marks to a recorded MD is a little harder, you go through the edit menu to
| divide and divide the track, a similar process using combine to remove track
| marks. I agree this would be easier if there was a single track mark button
| for use during playbank or record.

During playback, if you don't want to use the rehearsal feature and you want
just to add a mark as the point passes as on the R50, press AMS and then YES.
It's not that much more difficult than on the R50: you just omit the step of
rehearsal if you feel you can caught the point precisely enough with your
finger as it passed.

The 630 surely works the same. On the W1, it is even simpler: just press AMS
twice (can't guess whether that would work on the 630) as the division point
passes if you don't want to rehearse it to position it precisely.
