RE: MD: Buying a MD player
It does have a lot to do with the recording. My MZ-R50 records into the buffer for 40 secs and then writes it to disc for a brief moment. As for 40 secs not being handy ... believe me it is. When you're a drummer and you're using one of these things as a playback device next to your kit, the shock from the snare drum does get very upsetting to a 10 sec unit. Granted it has it's advantages on battery use, but my portable has 10 (or less with laser being offf) and I've never had it skip in a car/bus/biking/walking etc, and I don't think the time of anti-shock has much to do with recroding, I'm probably mistaken. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Secondly, I want to know if during an analog recording, is there any way I can make it so if there is 2 seconds or more of silence, I dont want the recorder to put on a track mark. From: J.R. Koiter [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, March 17, 2000 4:27 PM Subject: MD: Unfinished TOC writing. Please HELP!! Hello, Could someone please help me out? I made a recording of a concert tonight, but when I put away my recorder, the battery compartment accidentely went open and the writing of the TOC wasn't complete. So I can't play a thing back, the disc is being treated as empty. But the data HAS to be on it, I just can't access it because of a faulty TOC. Does someone know a way to play this disc? Is there some kind of test mode perhaps that just plays a disc from the beginning on? I'm really really disappointed, it was a great show.:-( So please!! Thanks, Joost Sure! Take a look on www.minidisc.org and see if you can find some instructions about "TOC Cloning" for your MD. You can copy the "Table of contents" of a full disc onto that one and retrieve the music on it. If not then I can do this for you with my MD (now done it for about 20 people!) although it depends where you are. Email me if you would like me to do this for you. -- Magic -- EMail : [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

From: Joost de Meij [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, March 16, 2000 3:29 PM Subject: MD: Microphone Is there any way to make a small modification so i can use the MD power, and that i don't need battery's for the microphone? That depends on the mic. The modification needed would probably not save you anything in terms of space and would just mean the battery on the MD runs down faster. IF it's a mic with a high power requirement (like my PZMs which require 48V) then there's no chance, you need a power supply system (ie mixer or phantom power box). Again, you didn't say which model of recorder you have. My slightly knackered Sharp 722 can do this. It ignores the TOC and just plays any disc you put in it from 00:00 to 74:59 in stereo even if the disc is blank! I never actually thought a broken MD would come in handy, but it does! MD: Intel Celeron PC's / Soundcards
Hi again I have just gone out and purchased an Intel 500mHz Celeron which comes with a Soundblaster64 card (analog only output). Understanding that I cant swap the soundcard that comes with the computer (causes its a celeron??? and everything is on the motherboard) - call me stupid but that does leave me with no upgrade options right! What can I do If I have a spare PCI bus slot can I add another sound card with digital I/O Secondly .. does anyone know if the voquette netlink adapter does work with Sony portables? Re: MD: Sharp Portable Recorders versus Sony Portable Recorders
The problem with End Search is that if you forget to press it you will destroy your recording if you record again. They could keep End search for editing, but the function should be changed so it will do an automatic End Search when you press record..(with a way to override it in case, for some reason you do want to record over your previous material.) Ivica Petrovic wrote: Hi, there are many misunderstandings about the End Search feature, and it seems to me that many of the guys on this list is against it, but I've found it very useful. But, I must admit, it depends for what you are using for your MD. I'm using MD mostly for doing interviews, and for such a reason it is very helpful feature, when you're doing some editing, and namely, move the track 10 to the track 2, where are you ? At the place 2, of course, and you need to go back to the end of the disc and continue to record your own parts of the audio article. Even if you don't need to record anything of your own on the disc, you need to find fast recorded parts and moved them around, -- Jim Coon Not just another pretty mandolin picker. mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] If Gibson made cars, would they sound so sweet? Re: MD: Sony Digital USB PC to MD Cable Coming Soon!
At last! How long have we been waiting for this? Just a pity it's going to be USB (and probably expensive if Sony are making it) because I don't have any USB ports (an extra 10 UKP) and I won't be able to use it with Linux unless somebody hacks a driver for it in 2.3, which will probably take at least 8 months... On the other hand the parallel version might work but the drivers will still take ages to come out (unless Sony uncharacteristically supplies programming info... hmm...rather unlikely I think) Does anybody know if it will have a digital input as well? That's what I really need (already have a digital output on my sound card). Jonathan - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: Re:Sharp Portable Recorders versus Sony Portable Recorders
hey David Next, I would like to know if I can connect my player to my CD player that has only a headphones jack. Sure why not? Don't it have a std output connector on the player? Also, how can I connect it to my non-USB 7200 Macintosh computer? Just use analog record for the time being. For digital recording you can wait for Creative Labs to release release their live drivers. They are currently in beta the last I heard. Then buy their soundcard. They should be released in the summer or so. It should be in retail Win/Mac drivers in the same packages by fall 2000. not sure if they are including better nix drivers. If you want USB just buy a USB card, there what $15-$30USD? Just about any USB PCI card will work, even the ones with windows only drivers. Just download the USB developers drivers from Apple and it should work. -- Tony Kwong [EMAIL PROTECTED] To read English synopsis of Long Vacation and Oishii Kankei visit my JDRAMA pages at the following URL: http://members.xoom.com/tkmedia/dorama - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: MP3 versus MiniDisc
I was really into MiniDisc until I went to the Switzerland Web Site and its seems that every player had problems with it and eventually whether it takes 1 month or 1 year, the player shuts down. I talked to a guy I knew and he said MiniDisc is on its way out and MP3 is on its way in. He said in never shocks because it has no moving parts. This sounds great, and also it will last 15 hours regardless of what you're doing. It has the same kind of features (being able to record from computer, computer, microphone) as the MD player, and the slots can hold a lot more memory on it. It seems upgradable. I just dont want to shell out $250 and have it be obselte in a couple of years. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: MD: Intel Celeron PC's / Soundcards
Hi, There should be an option - probably a jumper, dip switch or BIOS setup setting to switch off the built-in sound. Check the motherboard manual. Then you can fit a new PCI soundcard no bother. I've got a SoundBlaster Platinum with LiveDrive II. It works OK with MD, but the software is a bit crap. MD: 520 stutter
hi, my 520 did the exact same thing, stuttered at a certain time on a disc. i cleaned it many times, no help. it had to be repaired, new optical block, plus i had the usual shit fixed, turn on bug, protect error, ect. if you dont have a warrantee of any kind and have to pay, toss it in the garbage, or just keep it as a signal rate/ optical converter, its still good for that. mine would have been 250.00 to fix, as much as a new( better) one. since fixed, its been fine. good luck, Mike Hooker - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: MP3 versus MiniDisc
I was really into MiniDisc until I went to the Switzerland Web Site and its seems that every player had problems with it and eventually whether it takes 1 month or 1 year, the player shuts down. Like someone said. How many people are gonna say "Yeah, my unit works great!" You know, I got this leather wallet for my birthday and it's still doin it's job. That little piece of plastic with my picture on it that allows me to drive, well, I can still drive. I talked to a guy I knew and he said MiniDisc is on its way out and MP3 is on its way in. He said in never shocks because it has no moving parts. U...I think onetime we figured out how much it would cost to do the equivilent on MD and MP3 and it would cost over $1000 to get the storage space and quality you get from a portable and one disc. This sounds great, and also it will last 15 hours regardless of what you're doing. It has the same kind of features (being able to record from computer, computer, microphone) as the MD player, and the slots can hold a lot more memory on it. It seems upgradable. Yes, for a price. MP3's take up room, face it. Compared to what we CAN do with much better quality, MP3's are just a waste of space and smartmedia and compactflash cards ARE NOT cheap (I just spent $80 for a 16MB Compact Flash card for use in my digital camera.) Also, theres only 2 portable MP3 units that record. The Rio does not have this. Nor does they Lyra. To get 74 minutes on a MP3 player you'd need to balence bitrate and card size (well duh) but that not the point I'm making. Largest cards that exist are 128MB (largest compact flash I've seen, there MIGHT be a 256) and thats at 192kbps. But, who wants to spend $300 for a friggin memory card. It's about $600 total for the Rio while you can get a MD portable and some discs for $300. Hrmm, I wonder. Not only do MP3's sound bad but, to fit a whole CD I'd have to spend close to $300. I've barely spent $150 on blank MD's and I have 24 albums and like, 7 MD's of mixes. One other thing. MP3 is way to overmarked to the point it's stupid. Have any of you seen Samsungs new digital camera. It's only VGA resolution but has a built in MP3 player and it's only like, $289. I paid like $250 for my megapixel Kodak even though it doesn't include the MP3 playback (like I'd want it anyway) I just dont want to shell out $250 and have it be obselte in a couple of years. Nothing ever becomes obselite, it just becomes rare or hard to find. Like Beta. I still use beta. Hell, I just bought South Park, Bigger, Longer Uncut on Beta. They're still making it, it's just harder to find. Even if it dies down in the US (which I don't think it ever really will, it's lasted this long aganist DAT and DCC and so far CD-R for Comsumer. Even if it does, it has strong ties in other countries. Thank god for the internet! MD is not going out, in fact, in some ways, it's just getting started. -J.R. P.S. I heard that a few times. What I see in the shops says otherwise - you can get blank MDs in ASDA (a supermarket) now! Yeah, CVS, Food Lion and Giant carry like, 3 packs. Dollar General had some at one point. Don't know where they got them from. But it was like, 3 pack for $3.50. Crap though. 15 hours of the same 30 minutes of music doesn't appeal to me. I usually take about 3 or 4 MDs out with me for variety. I also take a blank for recording on if I feel I want to. 3 or 4??? I take my whole case, about 30, 24 in the sleeves and 6 between the pocket that holds the plastic part for the sleeves and case top. Well as of yet I haven't seen an MP3 recorder than can make near CD quality recordings from a microphone, but I would love to be proven wrong. I've tried a few MP3 players and I'm much happier with MD. Maybe in a few years when MP3 has caught up I may feel differently, The circuts in MP3 only call for, at best, radio quality.
