RE: MD: MDLP (Amended Comments)
===BEGIN QUOTE== I still think LP4 is pretty damned good, but the quality will depend in large part on the type of music one is recording. It's certainly good enough for airchecks, which was the primary reason for my enthusiasm. If you want a long mix for background music, LP4 will definitely suffice. ===END QUOTE As far as MDLP goes, I would regard LP2 as being useful for any situation where quality is desired but it may be desired to achieve a long playing time, such as longer personal music mixes, "sound-catching" where good stereo separation is desired and "cart machine" jingle use. LP4 may be suitable for obtaining "warts and all" airchecks of long radio broadcasts such as entire announcer shifts (announcer samplers, station output samplers, station logs); recording background music for places like shops and restaurants were sound quality doesn't matter (think Muzak); recording meetings and lectures; and archiving speech-based tapes such as cassette ministry tapes. The regular ATRAC1 modes come in handy where quality or compatibility with legacy MD equipment is desired. For example, they can be used for MD-based mastering. MD: Interfacing MD Walkmans to OEM stereos in the trendy VWs
Hi everyone! I have noticed that over the last few years, the new Volkswagen cars, especially the New Beetle and the Golf, have become very fashionable amongst the young well-to-do in Europe and Australia. The New Beetle would also be considered fashionable in North America as well. In a lot of these situations, the young people would either be buying the cars through the company that they own; or leasing it (perhaps for tax advantage and the ability to upgrade the vehicle when the lease terminates). In these situations, it may be desireable not to mess around with the sound system; and also the owner may not want to put in a new MD head unit because of security reasons or that it may look out of place in the VW's blue-illuminated dashboard. In the case of the New Beetle, there is a distinctive styling setup where the edges of the audio system are round, rather than square. In Australia, I have noticed that most of the current VW lineup, including the New Beetle, are equipped with single-CD head units that can work with a very costly dealer-installed optional six-stack CD changer. With these units, the CD stacker is accessed by one pressing a button labelled CD-C. Cassette-based head units aren't even offered as a "downgrade"; confined to the Transporter vans; or available only in less-desireable packages where you lose all the other desireable options. From the tone of the list, I have heard many negative comments about vehicle builders like VW making it hard for us to hook up portable MD and MP3 players to newer factory-supplied car-audio setups. As I said before, this has caused fellow listmembers to downgrade to vehicle packages that don't match what they really want or stay away from certain desireable vehicles when the time comes around to change vehicles; just so they can have a cassette player to use with their cassette adaptor or a sound system that has a front-panel CD-IN socket. Does anyone know if there are any devices that allow an MD changer or MD Walkman to be hooked in to newer VW sound systems? Sounds confusing? I'm extremely frugal, so I buy broken stuff and fix it. All my televisions, several car stereos, several MD players/recorders, CD players, and my VCR's... all were broken Sony's that people unloaded for cheap or free. Sadly, I wish I could say the Sony items that I purchased BRAND NEW were immune to problems, but this is not the case. My Mobile ES Sony CD changer will need to be sent in for service a SECOND time. I'd fix it myself, but it's still under warranty. I think my Sony Spressa CD-RW drive is having trouble too. It corrupted a CD-RW, and it won't read many CD-RW's that it made a long time ago. Guess I shoulda got a Plextor. My friend the computer consultant and field engineer just build himself 2 "super" systems. He put Plextor 12x CD writers in each. They are amazing! Plextor has a technology that prevents you from getting all of those failed CDRs. It goes back and will do what ever it takes to see that your CDR is finished without any "buffer under run errors" etc. And man is it fast!! It can copy a music CD in about 6 minutes!! If you say so!!! I've come across several broken Sony Trinitron computer monitors too. All my TV's are Trinitron, and every single one of them have needed a flyback transformer. Two of them needed the transformer when I bought them, one of them had an unrelated problem when it was given to me, and blew its transformer later on. You're right I'm sure. I have not had much experience with them. I have only owned on Sony Monitor (I'm using it right now) and amazingly it is the only thing from Sony I own that has lasted over 3 years. Re: MD: sharp 722-battery indicator does not work sometimes
Hi Susan, The 722, recharges the battery to about 90%, and then the indicator will go off. It then recharges at a far slower rate (trickle charge is the term, if I'm not mistaken). Out of the 3.5 hours or so that it takes to get fully recharged, about an hour is spent on this very slow stage. Since you don't always use up the same amount of power before you recharge, the time it takes to reach the 90% stage tends to vary. If the battery is wearing out, the symptom should be that you're getting a lot less life out of each recharge. It's only been about 4 months since you got your 722, so I think there's no problem with the battery itself. Sometimes the battery (recharge) indicator can be a bit unpredictable. Hope this helps. Leon sometimes my battery recharge indicator does not work and sometimes it does--no predictable pattern--it is recharging but I am wondering if the battery is wearing out. Ed Heckman writes: Cool! I also ordered the blue one. (Supposedly it will ship this Monday.) How does it look? I wonder which one will be the most popular. I haven't seen a good picture of the display anywhere on the web. It seems to be very small, but packed with information. Can you give a brief review of it? How well does it handle? In other words, how comfortable is it to use the buttons/jog levers while holding it with one or both hands? I think the blue looks nice. A little more green in it than the blue on the R-50. Slightly irridescent. The controls work well. Ergonomics are fine. Personally, I think Sony generally does a good job in this respect. One thing that takes a little getting used to is the right jog is used for the play button. You push the jog in for play. That is not as nice as just pushing a button. Otherwise, the jogs work as on the R-90. The right jog is for play control and the other is for menus. Both can be used once you are in the menus for titling etc, but both are not required. You could use one hand to press to select a menu choice and the other to scroll between options. That would be efficient if you had both hands free. The display is fine. I can't think of anything that was on the R-90 that is missing on the R-900 display. The level meter is horizontal and only goes halfway across the display, so it is difficult to tell where the peak level is until you get a reference point. There are no calibration marks for this, so that is not great, but it corresponds with the far right hand edge of the "rec mode" button. I wish Sony had not dropped the disc capacity and play location meter that is on the R-50. That was handy, but was dropped on the R-90 (R-55?). Perhaps I was the only one who used it. A few features are in menu commands that would be nice to have as buttons. Some of these are buttons on the remote (display, sound) but I can understand the button reduction to be a good cost/complexity reduction opportunity for a designer. The unit still defaults to "headphone" out when you change discs, even if you have been using line out. A previous poster asked about this. This is the same as the R-90, but it is a pain. I use an Airhead amp to drive my Etymotics on planes so I use line out often. For Larry, I must say, the unit is working great so far. Completely reliable, as I reach the end of week one of operation :) Regards, Leland - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Holly's experience reminded me of something stupid that I did (twice). Not that Holly did anything that was less than smart...just her experience reminded me of what I did. I finally decided to stop wasting batteries when playing my Sharp MT15 in the car. I hooked it up to the cigarette lighter with adaptor that I used to use with my portable CD player. Now I know that the unit requires an input of 4.5v from reading this list (otherwise I would never have known that or even thought to ask). Did I check the voltage rating on the adaptor? Of course not. It was 6.0v. The unit played fine for about 1/2 hour, and then it stopped playing and the MD display read "Power ?". Couldn't get it to work again so I gave up. A few days later, I tried again. Again it worked for about 1/2 hour and then stopped working. Finally, I checked the voltage on the adaptor. Must have had a fuse in the adaptor - glad that it did. My Sharp seems no worse for the wear. I am going to go out an try to find a cigarette lighter adaptor that I can use with my MD (Sharp MT-15). I will probably start at Radio Shack (though I hate them) for want of any other ideas. Is there anything else I should know other than 4.5v? Also, will I even be able to find one? You need to know what the current draw of the MD recorder is. The adapter needs to be the same voltage recommended and have a current ratting that is higher than the recorder draws. If you look at the info you got with the Sharp, it should be listed in the specs. I would guess it would be somewhere between 500 ma and 1000 ma. as long as the adapter has a higher rating than the unit need, the voltage is the same as it needs and the plug is the same and connected with the proper polarity it should work. If you get something that has interchangeable plugs on the end, be very careful or they may come apart and get put back together backwards. [sorry, can't help with the rest of the post] In these situations, it may be desireable not to mess around with the sound system; and also the owner may not want to put in a new MD head unit because of security reasons or that it may look out of place in the VW's blue-illuminated dashboard. Some of the newer Sony headunits have blue displays (as an option) that match VW dashboards. The model numbers usually have -RV on the end. (afaik) there are also facia panels available that allow you to put a standard DIN headunit in and have it match reasonably with the dash (similar materials, etc). For Larry, I must say, the unit is working great so far. Completely reliable, as I reach the end of week one of operation :) Believe me, I don't want you to have any problems with it. As someone who was a mini disc sales person, the worst thing in the world that I wanted to see was defective units. Until the Sharp 701/2 problem we almost never got Sharps back. We got a few Sony R50s back. I have a theory that they apply different standards to the quality control of Japanese Domestic units then what they "dump" on the US market. I really believe that the Japanese domestic units are better. I could be totally wrong. But it seems that we had less problems with the Sony units we sold compared to the number of American units. At least I hope that will be the case! The MD headunit was not cheap (NZ$800) but worth every cent. it sounds great and looks sexier than any headunit I've come across yet. And it's easy to use. For me MD is in it's element most in a portable context, so car MD just makes sense. The only things that make me a little dark about the unit are: 1. Display - capital letters only (uses CD/calculator-like display rather than dot matrix, probably because the CD headunits use the same face) but a real shame when you use lower and upper case a lot, doesn't scroll and you can't get remaining time in a track. (minor gripes really) 2. No MDLP, which despite the odd MD-L prophet of doom sounds like it will catch on. I'm interested in getting a Sony 640/940 home separate with MDLP, but then I think that the main place I'd like the ability to play back long capacity discs would be in my car on long trips [sigh]. MD: Sony reliability (OT-ing)
I'm agreeable to the reliability of the Sony portables as my MZR-30 lasted 3 years and the Li-Ion battery is still going strong... The only reason why I sold it to a friend was because i 'upgraded' to a Sharp 831. A word of caution though, the reliability of Sony does not extend to their accessories... the ear buds are fine, but their headphone design does not ensure durability. I owed a set of EGGO (which i purchased for about 100 USD)it worked fine for less than 8 months before it broke down. I sent it to Sony for servicing and they quoted me 80 USD, which was for getting the headband changed. (does that means that the 'phones are US$10 each?) ;) Anyway, I'm eyeing a pair of Sennheiser (which comes with 3 year warranty that Sony does not have). :) Max Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://home.netscape.com/webmail - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
