Re: MD: Size of WAV files from decoded MP3 files
From: "J. Coon" [EMAIL PROTECTED] I think they will be the same size. True. They are. But the point of my discussion was that an interpolative filter creates that data in an attempt to reconstruct the song. It mimics what it thinks the original data was...an even more difficult task than compressing the data imo. The original data which the compression codec threw away is lost forever. What I was questioning was what (if any) effect this digital guesswork would have on the sonic fidelity. Re: MD: Size of WAV files from decoded MP3 files
When Bob Norton wrote, N Yes. The size of a WAV file depends only on the length of the recording, N the bit resolution used and the sampling frequency. [and whether it's mono or stereo] Don Capps responded, C Bob...you completely missed my point here. I was referring to .wav files C created by decoding an MP3 file. Not to the original .wav file as ripped or C recorded from a CD. Seems that Bob did get your point, Don. A .wav file made by decompressing a lossily compressed song will be the same size as a .wav file of the ori- ginal uncompressed data. You're both saying the same thing and agreeing. "Bit resolution" isn't the same as the bit rate of storage in previous generations. Don posted further, | The original data which the compression codec threw away is lost forever. | What I was questioning was what (if any) effect this digital guesswork | would have on the sonic fidelity. That's a subjective question that nobody can answer for anyone else and which one can answer for oneself only by listening. To me, if all three are at the same bit rate, ATRAC3 sounds more faithful than WMA, which in turn sounds more faithful than MP3. You might reach a differing opinion, and so might I if I redo the comparison with other music. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: Size of WAV files from decoded MP3 files
From: "Taky Cheung" [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you convert an mp3 back to wave using uncompressed PCM, that's the same as the wave file you ripped from CD. Bob was right, the size of the wave file is depends on the frequency, bit depth, and mono/stereo channel. I realize that. But I also know that the data "restored" is not the original data lost in compression because that data is gone forever. An MPEG 1 Layer 3 decoder uses a sophisticated interpolative filter in an attempt to accurately replace the lost data. I'm currently looking into the Sony DHC-ZX50MD but was wondering if you could recommend anything else. Some important features are: 1. Reliability I was also looking into the Kenwood XD-981MD but I read some bad things about it. 2. FeaturesDigital recording level control as well as the other standard MiniDisc features. Would also like to haveCD, AM/FM Tuner, and Cassette Deck. Digital input and output are also nice. 3. Sound Would like it to sound really well at reasonable levels and be able to handle the occasional loud party. 4. AmericanI would prefer to buy an American release instead of a Japanese import through a specialty shop. This isn't that necessary though. Re: MD: Din unlock??
Niels asked, | I've got a sony je520 deck. And when I want to record to a blank md, I | get the error: 'Din unlock c71'. Could anyone tell me what's wrong? Just as the back pages of the manual say, the 520 is looking for a digital input signal but failing to find one, or finding one that it can't read. As Bryan suggested, if you are trying to record an analog signal, switch the input selector to `analog.' If you are trying to record digital input, make sure that the end of the cable is emitting red light and then make sure that it is inserted properly. Are you by any chance trying to record from a portable CD player? Many portable CD players that offer optical output will generate it only when a CD is actually playing, or when they are plugged into the wall (rather than operating on batteries), or both. So if you're trying to record from a portable CD player and it is running on batteries, get its AC adaptor and plug it into the wall. If you get that message before pressing PLAY on a portable CD player, press PAUSE to get it into playing position and see if the DIN UnLock message goes away on the 520; then press PLAY or PAUSE again on the CD player. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

MD: Sony, Best Buy, and MDs
There has been a lot of traffic on this list lately about whether Best Buy will or will not continue supporting the MD format. I previously worked at Best Buy for four-and-a-half years, and I must say I am disappointed at the company's stance on MD technology in general. And now, Sony has taken the first steps to kill of the MiniDisc in North America altogether: the RCD-W1, a dual-deck CD Recorder. http://www.bestbuy.com/Detail.asp?m=1cat=31scat=243e=11045615 For years, Sony has vehemently denied entering the CD-R market, instead supporting their proprietary MD products. But at the recent Consumer Electronics Show, Sony admitted to caving in to consumer pressure, and showed this home CD Recorder, as well as a Discman, Car Stereo Head Units and Changers which play MP3s burned onto CD. The same thing happened back in the 80s with BetaMax and VHS. Funny though - Beta's still around these days, it's just not being used (or sold) commercially in the United States. -Sleazy __ Get your free domain name and domain-based e-mail from Namezero.com New! Re: MD: recompressing (was MiniDisc Your Music)
I have several MDs of assorted jazz that were downloaded from MP3.com as 128K MP3's. I've used CoolEdit 2000 to decompress and play them via S/PDIF (TOSlink) to the MDS-PC recorder. I've noticed very few artifacts that I can attribute to the MDs ATRAC encoding. The biggest problem with 128K MP3 in general seems to be in the treble; it sometimes it sounds almost like a recording made with a cheap microphone. This sound is there when I play the file directly from the computer and the MD faithfully reproduces this problem. MDs made from CDs or LPs do not exhibit this. My opinion is that the additional audible damage incured when recording from 128K MP3s to MD is miniscule. Factors such as choice of MP3 decoder and type of connection between the PC and MD probably have far more of an audible effect than the ATRAC artifacts.. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: members who sell blanks (was MiniDisc Your Music)
Hello I took a lot of Peter's stock and recently tried to contact him to see how he was doing. I believe he is out of the country for a while because I did not hear back from him. Where ever he is I hope all is well and that he will check in on the board from time to time.. In any case the prices you mention are actually below cost on most name brand MD's. I could currently get some HiSpace Red color only and sell at close to those prices but the minimum order is ridiculous and how many people would choose that product and color on price alone when the more popular ones are not very much more?? I had a bunch of these for quite a while and had such a hard time moving them I quit stocking them. If enough of you tell me I am wrong I will reconsider, maybe restock them again. I know Peter could do this when he was with the buyitonline with those coupons but I fear all the trouble and hassle that caused might have had something to do with his decision to get out. In any case I am considering doing a regular special for everyone on the list and any ideas would be welcome, just email me direct. For now, I am going to offer a straight 10% off anything in stock till the end of the month. Just enter the words " MD Discussion" in the comments area of the order form and your total (less the SH charge) will be discounted. The discount will not show up in the cart (I am working on getting a new one that will allow for this) but rest assured I will do it manually. The charge is not made until I manually do it anyway which does allow me flexibility to do it. For now I can only do credit cards from North America (USA Canada) but am also working on other options for our friends overseas. This one may take some time as all the merchant companies really make this hard and expensive. I hope many of you will sign up for the store's mailing list to get specials each month (never more than 2 emails per month, no selling any address's from the list , NO SPAM). I know several people get upset with ads on this list which is why I have not made any in a while and I promise I will not make this a habit either... THANKS and Have a GREAT Musical Day! What make you think this is a threat to MD? MD reaches further than to just swipping music from commercial CDs. You can't cart that CD recorder in your pocket and make a recording of live music. Can't take it to your music lesson and record it, nor can you record a lecture with it. Nope, CD copiers are only for one segment of the population. I like the idea of having small and well-protected(well..scract proof) that can hold 74min of music (well...now thanks to MDLP that increased) all for very very cheap price. Only if someone could find a way to increase the recording speed on MDs from computer to MDman I'd be all over that along with whole lotta other people...I'd bet. Once that is done I am sure manufactures will start adding whole lotta of extra featureswhich we'd benefit from. SONY should spend time and money on the MD medium itself rather than the ATRAC codeccause as we all know new codecs come around promising to be the one but they never live up to the claimby investing in the medium itself I am sure there will be MD recorders that are flash upgradable that can make use new codecs as they come...dont get me wrong...I'd love to see ATRAC win itbut we all know general public dont care about the codec...they just want the music...and most of them want it for free and of the net...err napster I mean. MD: Timer Recording
I personally wouldn't bother using timers with my MD portable. Instead, I prefer to record audio programs using my Hi-Fi VCR...a breeze for multi-event recording. The sound quality is quite good, and the VCR compression is a benefit, helping to prevent midrange loss during CD dubbs. Besides, I can remaster the tape by running the signal through my Rane graphic EQ, and/or BBE Sonic Maximizer onto MD or CD to enhance the recording.
