That makes sense, connections corrode, resistance increases, wires I guess corrode a bit too. --R Marshall Booth wrote: It is seldom the gauge that's the problem. Re: [MBZ] new thermostat plus diesel purge = better performance
Just found this (I wrote it some several years ago). The temperature/resistance readings (from the MB Diesel Diagnostic Manual Vol 3) for the sensors used in 61x and 60x engines seem to be 20 deg. C (68 deg. F.) = 2.4k ohm (+/- 10%) and at 80 deg. C. (176 deg. F.)= 325 ohms (+/- 10%). A 10% error in the resistance (either over or under) is factory spec. That can translate into a reading of 5 degrees over or under at 100 deg C. So that from the factory, a reading of anywhere between 95 and 105 is acceptable (according to the MB nomograph) when the engine coolant at the sensor is 100 deg. C. Wondering if those people whos mail used to bounce all the time causing them to get unsubbed from mbz.org still have those issues with this server? I know I have not been getting bounces. Once thing about this system though is that if somebody is getting their mail bounced and are automatically unsubbed, if you stop getting mail all the sudden you can log in and see if your mail delivery is suspended and can restart it by yourself. Re: [MBZ] Temp sender resistance readings (was: t-stat/purge)
Marshall, Those readings are for the sensors for the EDS system or other controls, but not for the dash gauge sensor. I have never been able to find factory documentation with readings for that sensor. My measurements, on about a half-dozen different ones (new and used), show approximately 700-900 ohms at room temperature (60-80F, or 15-25C). That's wy different than the specs you list below. Those numbers do match up with the readings for the EDS sensors though, at least on my cars. Your point about the variation is excellent, though. Add to that the people who pull off the needles to replace their gauge faces, or modify the gauge cluster, therefore negating the factory calibration and easily inducing a possible 0-5 degree inaccuracy...! An IR thermometer can be used to verify if the gauge is reasonably close to accurate, if you have one avaialble. :-) -dm -- Date: Wed, 15 Jun 2005 19:59:16 -0400 From: Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] new thermostat plus diesel purge = better performance Just found this (I wrote it some several years ago). [MBZ] Blower motor
Hi, All. I'm about to remove the covers to get at the heater blower motor. Have RTFM, and the reduced archives, (now moved) and was wondering about removing the wiper assembly. Specifcally, the rubber seal around the gearbox that is pinched under the edge of the windshield. I took the assembly out of my organ donor 190E 85, peeled the seal out from under the edge of the glass and removed the whole thing to my workshop and still could not see how to remove the large plastic housing about the gearbox. Three screws in the bottom of the housing released one end of the cover, and then I chickened out, not wanting to destroy a good assembly. If any one can talk me through this (in words of one syllable) I shall be most grateful. TIA Fred Moir Lynn MA 190D 84 Miles, lots 85 300TD 87 190DT

RE: [MBZ] Congratulations, We Survived
Well, obviously, we do have too many rules that subvert intelligent thinking. But when they start talking about smoking, eating bacon and eggs, blah, blah, blah and not having issues, it just goes against logical thinking. We ALL know someone that survived despite a terrible lifestyle but that ain't the norm. I don't want to get into statistical variances but there are lots of people who are several standard deviations out of the norm who live despite their best efforts at shortening their lives. Gary When you put it like that, surely not too bright. I think that what the author, and many people who read it, think is that society has become overcomplicated with overbearing rules that are meant to protect us from harm, but end up being more pain than they're worth. [MBZ] Dragging brake mystery
My left rear brake is dragging. I'm sure of it. I can feel the heat coming off of it after a freeway run, and that wheel is covered with brake dust. If I jack it up, I can feel that it's tight. The dilemma: The brake caliper, rotor, and hoses on both rear brakes have been replaced in the last month. In fact, the problem started when they were replaced. I've taken it back to the shop that did the work, and they think I'm nuts -- they say the pads are moving freely and they can't find anything wrong. I guess I don't have much choice but to tear into it myself. Any suggestions on what to look for when I take it apart? --- David Brodbeck '83 Mercedes 300D Turbo

Sunil Hari wrote: No clue - you've hit all the obvious problems Unless it's a bad master cylinder... ouch. Could a bad master cylinder cause only *one* brake to drag, though? I'd think that it'd have to be two on the same circuit. I'm suspicious that they're wrong about the pads moving freely, and that something is hanging up mechanically. Or that the rebuilt caliper they put on is bad. If it's that, I may have to do some convincing, since it's *supposed* to have a lifetime warranty. Another thought I had -- if the caliper weren't shimmed correctly to center it on the rotor, would that cause dragging? (Do Mercedes calipers even get shimmed that way? The skinnerbox site seems to be down.)

Re: [MBZ] Dragging brake mystery
David, What you describe is typical of a faulty brake flex line. Also a defective caliper can cause this, but that is less probable being that it is new. First off, I would recommend that you check to see that you did receive the new parts that you paid for. If your flex line seems to be dry rotted, then it is an old line that may be decomposing from the inside. I have never come across a brake master failing in a manner so that would cause the brakes to drag as you describe. Also, trace the hard metal brake line to the tee fitting by the diff. to ensure there is no damage that could be causing a restriction. Possibly, there is a kink in the line. When you have the car in the air, have someone hit the brakes repeatedly, and upon their releasing the pedal, see if there is drag on the wheel. Lastly, bleed the brakes and see if any particulate matter comes out. There is a good chance dirt got into the caliper or brake line during disassembly if the tech was not careful in their work. This could cause the fluid to release slowly causing the brake to drag. If your rotor is blued from the heat you will want to consider replacing it with the brake pads. That should be covered by the shop warrantee should this be caused by carelessness on their behalf. Re: [MBZ] Congratulations, We Survived
Tim is on the right track there. I'm all for seat belts and airbags, but the points about kids living in front of CRT's, and not learning normal social interactions, is not insignificant. Something else alluded to is how the current generation has turned wants into needs. For example: I can't tell you how many times I hear how people HAVE to have a cell phone, or how their children HAVE to have a cell phone, so they can be contacted at will at any time. Ummm, so how did society manage to function at all before the early 1990's when cell phones became somewhat common? Ditto for people that HAVE to have one in case their car breaks down. Same question - did people rot and die on the side of the road in the past, before cell phones were available? Hmmm. IMO, if you're that far away from civilization when you break down, there's probably no cell tower around anyway. While there are always exceptions, IMO the current generation is largely (50%+) made up of spoiled brats who almost always get their way, and who dictate rules to their parents, rather than the other way around... makes you think back to what caused Rome to fall apart over multiple decades. Everyone seems to think 'it can't happen here'. I should probably stop there before I get all wound up. (Scary part is I'm only 31...!)
