[MBZ] holy crap, almost a major disaster
So I loaded up a car this afternoon to take over to have my employees strip and prep it for crushing. They are doing MASSIVE highway construction(widening) right where I keep my cars. Anyways, as I was pulling out I must have it a big hole or something. Anyways, went a little ways and pulled over to check to make sure everthing was ok. Everything appeared OK. So little while later I go over some rail road tracks. And as I am stopping at a stop sign just past the tracks I noticed Im about to be rear ended by the car I am towing(on my car dolly). Crap, my 1st thought was it came loose and rolled off the end of the dolly. I ease over into a parking lot. The dolly came OFF the hitch. My receiver where the ball mounts was physically bent down slightly. I guess when I hit the bump it must have been harder than I Thought and bent the hitch down and going over the tracks was enought to knock it off the rest of the way. So I put the dolly back on the hitch and the locking tab didnt want to click down. Had to beat it with a hammer a couple of times but it then locked down. Continued on without problem. That could have been a MASSIVE problem if I had been going down the highway. Thank god for safety chains. -- Kaleb C. [MBZ] 124 Rear Calipers
I found an unusual (to me) situation when replacing the rear brake pads on one of my '95 E300D. A dealer replaced the disks and pads at some point just short of 300k mi, perhaps 2-1/2 years ago. It's now at 352k mi. The rear brakes started making noise, so today I started replacing the pads myself. When I removed the old pads on the left, the outboard pad was gone and metal was rubbing the disk. The inboard pad was still like new and seemed to be siezed in the caliper. The right rear brake is in similar condition, but not quite as bad. The outboard pad is down to about 1/4 and the inboard pad is maybe at 3/4. To sort this mess out, I removed both calipers. There is no evidence of leakage. And when I forced each pistion back (two per caliper) it squirted fluid out the hose connections. So the pistons don't seem to be siezed. But there is a lot of rust/corrosion around the pad guides and pressure surfaces. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the source of this problem? How do I correct it and avoid a repeat? Can I cleanup and rebuild the calipers? Thanks Ned Kleinhenz '95 E300D x2 '85 300D '80 300TD
Re: [MBZ] 124 Rear Calipers
sounds like maybe your brake hoses are bad and need to be replaced. This is likely because you couldnt push the pistons in with hose hooked up but could when you removed then. ned kleinhenz wrote: I found an unusual (to me) situation when replacing the rear brake pads on one of my '95 E300D. Re: [MBZ] 124 Rear Calipers
You need to rebuild the calipers, it's easy on this particular set (you can push the pistons back in by hand!). Quick fix. I would do the fronts as well, and check the condition of the pin and bushings the floating caliper slides on -- if they rattle or move sideways, replace them too (kits available). I would also take a wire brush and clean up the bearing surfaces for the pads, they CAN stick if there is lots of corrosion in there, although that usually causes excessive pad wear rather than no pad wear! I suspect what happened is that the calipers actually needed rebuilding last time the pads were replaced, so you have a pair of pistons that are stuck. The rubber goes bad eventually, and although the caliper does not leak, you are not generating enough pressure to move the piston during normal use. Working the piston free doesn't help, it will only stick again, or worse, leak. Bad hoses cause BOTH pads to wear, not just one, but I would replace all four hoses at 300,000+ miles anyway, they are MUCH cheaper than failed brakes! Peter

Seriously the seller has a 0 feedback score so I would want to look at the car in person before handing over the hard earned. Then again if you score it for $200 you should be right. Re: [MBZ] 124 Rear Calipers
I just had a caliper failure on a 123 and the hoses were not letting the fluid return so they held pressure on the calipers and thus the pads. Now with new hoses, the new calipers and pads are not sticking as they were when I put them on without changing the hoses at the time.. Depends on where to where, and time of year, not just mileage between the points. Some states (LA, for example) are sort of, forget it. Dunno why exactly. FLA, most of CA, OK and TX are easy, I know that much. If your start or end point is near one of the major regional dealer auctions, it will be easier/cheaper. For example, a reputable company will probably charge in the $800 region, retail, for taking a car from Texas or California to New England. Like everything else, if you know someone in the car biz, dealers get it for less. (And before someone chimes in with I had mine sent a few years back for $400, ask yourself how much diesel cost back then too.) Caveat emptor. Shop for reputation and price, not just price. All these guys are just brokers, they either sub to owner/ops or to smaller regional companies (not unlike how the furniture moving business really works). I imagine my car will see two or three different trucks at least, on its way up here. (Which is why non-running cars cost a fortune to ship.) Some companies will tell you they'll do it for much less, and from the horror stories I've heard and read, at best you'll probably see the car in about triple the time frame you expected, at worst it will turn up that much later but not even where it was supposed to land. However, always expect it to take longer than they tell you. Mac Aylmer, Quebec '60 Mercedes 220s / '82 240d '75 Volvo 164e / '88 Volvo 245

-- Kaleb C. [MBZ] What is a good, non turbo, '81 300D center muffler to buy?
Hi gang! My exhaust seems a bit loud and running out of repairs to address, I am inclined to believe the center muffler needs to be retired. A recent post on the an exhaust question suggest the center baffles may be eroded away on my muffler. I checked Rusty's site and there are two center mufflers listed. Bosal for $86. and Eberspaecher for $134.00 (OEM). The rear muffler seem to have been replaced my the PO and appears to be very good. The center muffler has some eroded metal on the new front pipe connections but not leaking and suggest it was an original or replaced many moons ago. Obviously the cheaper muffler looks inviting but I am concerned fitting it may run into problems as opposed to the OEM muffler. Any feedback welcomed. [MBZ] A Very BAD Day @ The Office...
Hi Sue, Just another note from your bottom-dwelling brother. Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you've been feeling down lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you realize it's not so bad after all. Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must bore you with a few technicalities of my job. As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It's a wetsuit. This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel powered industrial water heater. This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks the water out of the sea. It heats it to a delightful temperature. It then pumps it down to the diver through a garden hose, which is taped to the air hose. Now this sounds like a darn good plan, and I've used it several times with no complaints. What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working, is take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wetsuit. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It's like working in a Jacuzzi. Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my butt started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only made things worse. Within a few seconds my butt started to burn. I pulled the hose out from my back, but the damage was done. In agony I realized what had happened. The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit. Now, since I don't have any hair on my back, the jellyfish couldn't stick to it. However, the crack of my butt was not as fortunate. When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish into the crack of my butt. I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all laughing hysterically. Needless to say I aborted the dive. I was instructed to make three agonizing in-water decompress ion stops totaling thirty-five minutes before I could reach the surface to begin my chamber dry decompression. When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet. As I climbed out of the water, the medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my butt as soon as I got in the chamber. The cream put the fire out, but I couldn't poop for two days because my butt was swollen shut. So, next time you're having a bad day at work, think about how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved up your butt. Now repeat to yourself, I love my job, I love my job, I love my job.

The final verdict will be in when the car arrives (approx. 10 days). http://www.aa-auto.com/ So, how much does it cost to ship a vehicle? Mac Aylmer, Quebec '60 Mercedes 220s / '82 240d '75 Volvo 164e / '88 Volvo 245 Also, of course, depends on the vehicle, but from my experience, your estimates are low. I would start off getting an estimate from DAS, who is kind of the industry standard right now due to theri partnership with ebay. They are very reputable, and on the slightly higher than normal side, but have ALL the options you want-bonded and licensed and insured, etc. From my experience of shipping about seven to ten vehicles for people over the past six or seven years, I would say a good cross-country price is abotu $1200 right now. Pick up truck will be a bit more, Karmann Ghia will be a bit less. I shipped a Ghia from San Fran to KY about five years ago, and it was $875 then-gas and diesel were MUCH cheaper!!! I also found an independent guy to grab a BIG crewcab 4X4 for me and bring it from So Cal to GA for me for about $900, but he was none of the above-not bonded or insured, just a guy taking a load one way that wanted to help pay for the gas home. All of the companies I spoke with were over $1400 for that one, I think, and that was last fall before the prices bumped up again. Anyway, as I said, from MY experience, DAS is slightly high, but not a LOT higher than the average will be. There are still others that are MUCH mroe than them, as well as many that will be a little less than them. I think it is kind of like local gas prices-they are all pretty close. If one guy is willing to do it for $1000, another guy may go down to $925 to get the business, but no one will go back below that. Same the other way. If one company is going to charge $1000, no one wants to go TOO much under that because they want to make some money too!!! There is an internet list of old tractor enthusiasts that often make soem offers to do some shipping just a little bit cheaper. I cannot recall the web site, but have found individuals going somewher eto deliver or pick something up once in a while and they will sometimes do a cheap return run, or since their equip is so big, they sometimes have a WHOLE flatbed semi to handle their tractor, but have room for a car on back. Do an internet search and see if you can track this down. Also, look on craigs list and ebay-sometimes some individual is doing the same thing. Again, often these are not companies, but just good old boys, but I have had god luck going this route. Car enthusiasts tend to take care of cars! Good luck! Michael

[MBZ] Turbo adjustment on a 300SDL, A/C search for parts
In my early efforts to sell the 86 300SDL (I've postponed that one a year or so... finances), someone mentioned after driving it, that the turbo was weak and it needed to be adjusted. He suggested that it was a valve of some sort. I've always thought that the only adjustment on any turbo was the wastegate. The car does fine with the A/C off, in the 0-60mph run (about 14 secs) and about 16-18 secs with the A/C on. BTW, the body looks good now, since ol' Maaco got ahold of it and fixed all rust spots (cutout and re-welded those that were through the metal). I replaced the RF fender, as well. Next item: interior. I'm looking for a driver's seat in cream beige leather that is not ripped or torn. I don't care about sagging springs or discolorations. [MBZ] Stll more hitch
Hey all, I'd still like to find out what model the euro hitch I got off ebay some time ago was originally intended for. Tried searching the epc, which includes ECE passenger models, and the online euro price/availability page for the one MB p/n on the thing, which is listed on the detachable ball arm, 124 584 18 21, to no avail. Can't find anything useful on the manufacturer, Oris Metallbau KG. It does have the MB star on the ball arm and the ID plate on the crossmember does list it as for a nonspecific MB application. All I can say for sure is that the big crossmember that attaches to the underside of the vehicle isn't a boltup fit for my 124.193. I may wind up having it modified to fit but I'm currently pursuing other avenues that might lead me to acquisiton of the correct assembly for my wagon. If I am able to acquire the real deal, I'd want to pass this NOS relic on, hoperfully to someone who has the model for which it was intended. joe
[MBZ] VIbration identified
For what it is worth: Maybe someone can learn from this experience. On my 86 SDL, I have had problems the past couple of years with vibrations. Initially, it seemed like tires, and i'd take it in to the tire shop, and they would find slipped belts and sell me a new tire. This got very old, Last fall, we changed the carrier bearing rubber mount. that seemed like it took care of the problem for a while, then it came back. Friday night, we put it up on the hoist, and checked things out. everything seemed ok. Carrier bearing looked good, axles tight, and tires reasonably round. I climbed up a ladder and started the car and ran it up to 60-70 mph. Vibration there. Switched positions, and my brother ran the car up to 70mph. Driveshaft was smooth as silk. no bouncing tires. The left axle shaft looked normal, but the right one was moving back and forth along the centerline, toward the dif, then toward the tire. I pulled it out and the outer end is stiff. Inner end seems to be normal. Since i didn't have a spare axle, I pulled the boot and pumped some grease in, then put it back together. Theory that grease can't hurt a stiff joint, and it might loosen up while i try to find a used axle. I have never seen an axle fail in this mode. I have only seen them get loose and rattle around. (still annoying) IN the process, I found out that all 126s are not equal. My 126 junker has the 123 style axles, that you have to pull the diff cover to unclip. THe SDL has the newer style.
Re: [MBZ] Turbo adjustment on a 300SDL, A/C search for parts
You've pretty obviously been playin' hooky for a while now, Nick. ;) Your times are on the slow side, but before you start foolin' with the wastegate you need to patch in a pressure gauge to the boost line to the ALDA, preferably right near it rather than further upstream, and run it into the passenger compartment (out thru the back of the open hood and back in at the front door jamb works fine using standard vac line). Take it for a good full throttle run and see what kind of boost it's showing at speed. If it's not at least in the 8-10 psi range you want to make sure that the fitting on the manifold and the pressure lines themselves aren't plugged and that the overboost protection switch is working. You can, at least temporarily, bypass that last as a diagnostic aid. After you've confirmed decent boost and if it's still slow, you'll want to pressurize the ALDA direct with your gauge hooked up so as to make sure it's able to transmit the info the pressure line is sending on to the pump. Without the additional fuel that the ALDA calls in, no amount of boost is going to improve your performance one whit, and too much boost is just and only a direct power drain. If everything else looks ok, you might benefit some from an ALDA adjustment. joe On 8/1/05, Nick Gough [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In my early efforts to sell the 86 300SDL (I've postponed that one a year or so... finances), someone mentioned after driving it, that the turbo was weak and it needed to be adjusted. [MBZ] Man Sued in EBay Dispute Over Elvis Car
http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/wire/sns-ap-ebay-lawsuit,0,830644.story?coll=sns-ap-nationworld-headlines Man Sued in EBay Dispute Over Elvis Car By Associated Press August 1, 2005, 10:31 AM EDT LEVITTOWN, Pa. -- A 66-year-old man has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia against a New York man who reneged on a bid he made on eBay to buy a 1969 Mercedes Benz that was once owned by Elvis Presley. In his lawsuit, Gene Epstein of Wrightstown, Pa., claims that Jason Shepherd of Ballston Lake, N.Y., entered a buy-it-now bid of $245,000 for the vehicle. But when it came time to collect, Shepherd allegedly claimed that the bid was a mistake made when his daughter accidentally hit a key on his computer, Epstein said. Attempts to reach Shepherd for comment were unsuccessful. The lawsuit is seeking for Shepherd to pay the original bid, along with $150,000 in damages. Once an item is removed from the active sale list on eBay and listed as sold, its reappearance on the active auction listings creates the impression that the item being sold is in some way unsaleable or unmarketable, the lawsuit said. Epstein said, however, that he would settle the case if Shepherd issues a specifically worded apology he drew up and pays a token amount. Representatives from eBay could not be reached for comment. Re: [MBZ] Turbo adjustment on a 300SDL, A/C search for parts
Hi Nick, It's highly unlikely the turbo wastegate needs adjustment. More likely is the ALDA needs a slight tweak. Your numbers are pretty close to spec, you should be approx 13 seconds to 60mph near sea level assuming your speedo is accurate (check with GPS) and you are using a stopwatch for timing. If you put a boost gauge on the car, put a T in the line to the ALDA, spec is 12-14psi at 4000rpm at full throttle under load. Most OM603's are set around 12psi, in my experience. A half-turn CCW of the ALDA screw might be enough to help things out, maybe a full turn if you don't get excess smoke leaving a stop. The odd part is the car is slower with the AC on. There is a WOT cutout switch on the throttle linkage that is supposed to turn of the AC compressor at full throttle. Perhaps your throttle linkage is not adjusted properly, or the switch is faulty, or a wire is broken. With the AC on, you should be able to push the switch with your finger and observe the compressor turn off while the switch is engaged. Here's a photo of the switch: http://www.w124performance.com/images/OM603_misc/microswitch.jpg Not sure about the AC engagement issue, could be one of a number of things - not sure where to start. I'm not a W126 expert so I'll let someone else pipe up on that topic. :-) HTH, Dave M. [MBZ] Clutch failure
Gregg, Catching up on digest - forgive if repeating info. I recently replaced the master clutch cylinder to repair a similar casualty. Remember, there is a slave cylinder at the other end of the pipe, that translates the pressure from the master cylinder into motion to move the through-out bearing. A slave cylinder failure could also be the culprit. Diagnose by visually examining both cylinders; the bad one will probably be the one leaking brake fluid. If you change out the master cylinder, I recommend you don't loosen the nut on the rod at the top of the cylinder, as this changes the clutch/pedal engagment point relationship. Only loosen/remove the two nut/bolts that hold the cylinder in place, and the feed line (push-in connection) and the pressure pipe that goes to the slave cylinder. HTH. [MBZ] New Personal MPG Best and Coolant Question
So, it was a banner day on Friday when I set my personal best, finally breaking the 30 MPG barrier in my E300D with an average of 30.56 MPG over 558 miles. While I'm sure having a non-operational A/C system has helped, I swear it has been better since the vacuum pump was replaced. Maybe the old pump was on its way out for a while and not operating the diverter flaps in the intake to best effect. This is still lower than I had hoped, but at least it's better. Now for the question: About 2 weeks ago I started loosing coolant. My first thought was, God, not another head gasket. But inspection reveals no leaks around the head; no visible leaks anywhere, for that matter. The odd thing is that if I add coolant to the cold fill line when the engine is cold, it will rapidly drop to about an inch from the bottom of the reservoir (right around the top of the low coolant sensor, so it blinks on and off while driving) in a matter of a day or so, and then it stays there. As a test, I drove a week without topping off and the coolant level never dropped more than another 1/'2 or so, still visible in the reservoir. The other odd thing is that the coolant level is always higher when cold; most often when I start the car the light will be out, then as the car warms up the light comes on. The coolant should expand when hot, so I'd expect the opposite to be true. The cap is new and appears to be holding pressure fine. There is no coolant smell, nor have I found any coolant under the car, in the splash guards, or anywhere else that I can see. The overflow hose is dry and there is no evidence of dry coolant residue near it. This car does not have the second coolant reservoir in the fender. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. J.B. I never heard of this and can't imagine why eating habits (as opposed to WHAT one eats) can lead to diabetes. [MBZ] How Much Is It?
Buy It Honey There are several men sitting around in the locker room of a private club after exercising. Suddenly a cell phone on one of the benches rings. A man picks it up, and the following conversation ensues: Hello? Honey, it's me. Are you at the club? Yes. Great! I am at the mall two blocks from where you are. I just saw a beautiful mink coat. It's absolutely gorgeous!! Can I buy it? What's the price? Only $1,500.00. Well, OK, go ahead and get it, if you like it that much ... Ahhh, and I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the 2001 models. I saw one I really liked. I spoke with the salesman, and he gave me a really good price ... and since we need to exchange the BMW that we bought last year ... What price did he quote you? Only $60,000 ... OK, but for that price I want it with all the options. Great! But before we hang up, something else ... What? It might look like a lot, but I was reconciling your bank account and ... I stopped by the real estate agent this morning and saw the house we had looked at last year. It's on sale!! Remember? The one with a pool, English Garden, acre of park area, beachfront property ... How much are they asking? Only $450,000 - a magnificent price...and I see that we have that much in the bank to cover ... Well, then go ahead and buy it, but just bid $420,000. OK? OK, sweetie ... Thanks! I'll see you later!! I love you!!! Bye ... I do too ... The man hangs up, closes the phone's flap, and raises his hand and asks all those present, Okay... who's phone is this?

Re: [MBZ] 124 Rear Calipers
Thank you Peter. Your advice makes sense. If the pison stuck, can it be fixed by replacing just the piston? Or do just the o-rings need replacement? Is the cylinder of the caliper body usually OK? I haven't looked at the front caliper yet. Does the front caliper have a floating side? Each rear caliper has two independent pistons. Is there a caliper rebuilding article somewhere? Thanks, Ned On 7/31/05, Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You need to rebuild the calipers, it's easy on this particular set (you can push the pistons back in by hand!). Peter
Re: [MBZ] VIbration identified
Glad you found a stiff joint. By the book its hard to test axles running them with the wheels off the ground because the deflection angle is different than when its on the road. ___ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] For new parts see www.buymbparts.com For repairs see www.oldworldauto.com To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net

Re: [MBZ] 300 D/TD/SD, etc. air cleaner rubber blocks
you can stuff a radiator hose (or two - one smaller one inside a larger one, tight fit good) between the air cleaner and the valve cover. That has stopped mine from breaking (caused by vibration at idle, usually, which can be more or less of a problem depending on severity). Better solution is to drill a hole in the side of the air cleaner housing and bolt in a couple rubber donuts from the tops of an old shock absorbers...the stack of rubber donuts should push up against the valve cover.
