Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 3, Issue 198
My 01 S class MB does that too. Says how many miles before service and checks the level. Wasn't it 00 that MB offered that first? MB counts down the miles to service. Seems like it starts a 300 or so then at 100 then when due, if I remember right. I change when it's convenient for me. So if it's within a K or so it gets done. There's something about buying an $80,000.00 car and saving $50.00 on an oil change that makes me twitch. Re: [MBZ] crap in tanks and TOILET PAPER (?!?!??!) filters....
50 years ago the stuff you wiped your butt with was a paper that did NOT break down to well in a wet envinronment and then came along companies like Georgia Pacific and about 30 years ago they developed a butt wipe paper that was designed to break down with moisture. Got any moisture in your crankcase? Now about 10 years ago a company named Oberg in Everett Washington came out with a fine screen filter that will stop particles that filters like Mann, Fram, Purcolator could only dream about slowing down. The filter worked so well that you had to have one with a tell tail light unit that told when the oil flow was slowing down due to the filters efficiency. I have seen race engines assembled in a clean room then set up on a engine dyno and shut down after a brief run because the Oberg unit was too efficient. The Oberg unit would remove small machine particle's, lint from hand towels used by the machinist/mechanics, stuff the hot tank chemicals did not get, well you get the idea. Real toilet paper or the Hengst fuel filters that look a bit like a roll of toilet paper? If the former, how do you do it? Filters that use toilet paper as the filter element have been available for at least 50 years. They are VERY effective, but must be changed rather frequently in most situations. They CAN provide excellent filtering for fine (in the 1 micron range) particulate. They remove soot beautifully (Mercedes disposes off soot by changing the oil). Using a TP filter, one VW diesel owner did not CHANGE his Mobil 1 oil for 60kmi and when it was finally changed it was still honey colored and the TBN had not dropped more than about 50%. Problem was that he had to change the filter at least every 2500 miles or the filter would occlude, and with each filter change, a qt of fresh oil had to be added. The actual cost for the 60kmi was only about $10-12 less than if he had change the oil/filter in the conventional way - and there was the labor and disposal problems of changing the filter every 2500 miles (24 times) for 60kmi of driving. I have one of these on one of my cherokees - a frantz oil filter. It is literally a roll of toilet paper as the element, but it's not paper I'd want anywhere near my bathroom, for fear that it got used. I think 1000 grit sandpaper would be more comfortable. The oil filter that the jeep was supposed to get is NLA, and the one that everyone tries to sell me rubs on the motor mount and leaks like a sieve as a result, so I have to use a cheesy FWD cadillac filter. The PO wasn't convinced that the caddy filter provided enough filtration. *shrug* To me, the toilet paper soaked in oil makes a great campfire starter in the desert. I'm looking forward to lighting off the one that got changed after the fuel pump diaphragm went and the pump started pumping gasoline in the oil :) K ___ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net -- Don Teresa Merriman Market Place Mexico Vacation Rentals Property Administration www.marketplacemexico.com http://www.marketplacemexico.com

The car is driveable and I feel that it would hold up on a 1k mile trip. The problem, as I've mentioned before, is that the key does not turn. I've been told that this is due to a busted key tumbler and steering wheel lock. Also, if you planned to take it on the highway, it shakes between 60 and 65. Probably needs an alignment. I've driven with it like that for almost a year. That's probably not great for the car, but I go to school full time and work part time so I do what I can when I can and when I can afford it. I've changed the oil a few times in the year that I've owned it and changed the air and fuel filters. I'd like to think I can get $1000+ for the car. [MBZ] wierd SDL charging problem.
One of the SDL's is not acting right. Every so often while the wife is out and about, the thing wont start when she goes to leave wherever. The battery is just not strong enough to turn it over. Usually hooking up a jumper pack gets it going. It can do this once a week, or go many weeks and not do it. So just now I put the meter on it and with the car off get about 12.something volts at the battery. When car started I was getting about 13.8 or so then dropped down to about 13.5 to 13.3. Turn on AC and headlights, it drops to about 12.8 or so, cant remember exactly but it was below 13. So do these numbers sound right? Is my alternator weak? Battery? Will check battery again in the morning to see what its at after sitting all night. -- Kaleb C. [MBZ] MB V-6 diesel vs Lexus hybrid coast to coast
From New York to LA - diesel beats hybrid on fuel August 24, 2005 Although many may think petrol-electric hybrid drives use less fuel than other engines, German car magazine Auto Bild has shown that a modern diesel engine is a superior alternative -- an almost as good in city driving. The magazine, as reported in its latest issue, conducted a comparative test drive from the East Coast to the West Coast of the USA - from New York to Los Angeles - with a new Mercedes-Benz ML 320 CDI and a Lexus RX 400h with a petrol/battery hybrid system. The test result showed that the advanced diesel engine was far more fuel-efficient than the hybrid over long distances and only marginally less so in a city The cars were driven about 5200 km from New York to San Francisco and the final figures told a story that will turn the greens blue in the face: The results showed that while the ML 320 CDI (165kW) returned an average fuel consumption of 7.62 litres/100km, the hybrid SUV (155 kW) averaged 8.64 litres/100km. The difference of just under 11 percent, Auto Bild said, underscored the superiority of a state-of-the-art diesel engine over a hybrid drives. The endurance test also showed that hybrid technology was only marginally more fuel efficient in urban traffic where it is most effective in reducing consumption. At 9.8 litres/100km, the diesel returned only 0.17 litres/100km heavier fuel consumption in city driving than the hybrid. The M-class performed admirably under diverse conditions during the entire 5200km trek, said an Auto Bild editor. The endurance test also showed that hybrid technology was only marginally more fuel efficient in urban traffic . I hadn’t expected such a big advantage in fuel efficiency. Underneath the bonnet of the ML 320 CDI is an all-new V-6 engine with third-generation common-rail technology that has brought further improvements to fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and performance. At 510Nm, the V6 has one of the highest torque outputs of any engine in its displacement class, and this performance begins at only 1600rpm. The Mercedes-Benz coast-to-coast test cars were also equipped with diesel particulate traps, helping to further reduce the M-Class’s emissions. The 320 CDI engine meets Euro IV regulations even without the trap. ___ http://www.motoring.co.za

Donald Snook wrote: So, is the point of going 15-20,000 miles just so you can say you did that? No matter anyone’s thoughts about the price of Mobil 1, I think we can all agree that it is cheaper than an engine. This thread has demonstrated that people have an almost religious belief about the oils they use in there cars. I suppose I am no different in that all I could think was “Oh God! Why would someone go 20K on the same oil.” If the oil becomes dirty and requires changing at 1,000 miles, there is NO argument that it shouldn't be changed. If it doesn't require changing for 20kmi there is absolutely NO reason to change it sooner. It's all a matter of how dirty it gets. Different driving styles with different engines and different conditions will dictate the change interval. There is NO single interval or even pair of intervals that is best! All the manufacturer can do is provide a VERY conservative estimate that will assure safety under arguably worse case conditions. That usually results in 75-80% of the oil being discarded before it's life is even half exhausted. A little measurement and some common sense can allow the SAFE extension of oil change intervals by 100-200 or even 400% even using a conservative criteria (2% soot for example). It makes no more economic sense to discard oil with half or more of it's life left, than to discard half the fuel you buy rather than burning it all or discarding half the food you buy without eating it! Re: [MBZ] proper and best fluids
Dave M. wrote: In addtion to what Jeff said... 1) Marshall noticed that his OM60x engines would develop lifter noise before a 5kmi change interval rolled around, which would go away when the SynTec was changed. Reverting back to Mobil-1 kept them quiet past 5kmi. This was, I believe, with the original 5W-50 variety. Marshall can correct or elaborate on this I'm sure. Actually I noticed that SynTec consumption rate increased starting at about 2500 miles. This is a CLASSIC sign of viscosity improver (additive) breakdown (it happens with MANY conventional oils - especially those that use ONLY group I base so must make extensive use of viscosity improvers). At about the same time I was puzzling over the increasing oil consumption rate, Red Line published a test in which an unnamed 5W-50 oil (SynTec was the ONLY 5W-50 oil sold in the US then) displayed marked reduction in lubricity that corresponded with the increased consumption rate I was seeing. It was later confirmed that the 5W-50 oil was SynTec. As long as SynTec is changed frequently, it's pretty good oil - much better than most conventional oils - but it needed to be changed MUCH more frequently than Mobil 1 - long before soot or other combustion by-products made it unsuitable. 2) IMO, almost all the synthetic oils on the shelf at McParts are the fake Group III stuff (Rotella Syn, Valvoline, etc). There are not many true synthetics left, but at the moment Amsoil, Mobil, and Red Line are all the real deal. For more than you EVER wanted to know about oils (and I'm not joking here), check out this website: http://bobistheoilguy.com/ For the record I don't believe in any oil additives and the site above basically agrees with that. For 1-time cleaning purposes, AutoRX is neat stuff but that's not a magical additive like most claim to be - it's specifically for cleaning. Neat stuff actually. I use Mobil 1 for cleaning. Works GREAT. If an engine is spectacularly dirty I have used a short interval (400-600 miles) of a high quality of conventional oil with a VERY aggressive additive package (like Delo 400) before putting in the Mobil 1 (but I only did that once and I'm NOT sure anything was any cleaner at the first Mobil 1 change then with just using Mobil 1 alone). I did put an indicator on it for a while. I went to Radio Shack and bought a 12V Sonalert. I extended the wire lengths and squeezed them through a wiring harness grommet by the master cylinder booster,to get access to the passenger compartment. I grounded one of the lead wires and hooked the other to the terminal on the #1 glow plug. Whenever the glow plugs were on, the Sonalert started beeping, and yes a couple of times after driving around for over 20 minutes the thing would randomly start beeping. I finally took the Sonalert out 'cause I got tired of listening to it. Never did find out just what was resetting the glow plug relay. One day I plan to add a temporary wire from a temporary switch, to be mounted inside, to the terminal on the glow plug relay that gets its' signal from the ignition switch. This so that the glow plugs can only come on when the switch is on. I will only turn the switch on for starting, then off. It seems to me the problem must be an intermittant open in the wire that serves that purpose and it keeps resetting the relay. Why else would my battery go dead only while the car is running? It can sit unused for over a week and still be charged so it isn't a load dragging it down while it sits, only when it is running. BTW, new 70 amp Bosch rebuilt alternator now with a Transpo adjustable regulator set to about 14.2 volts, load tests says it puts out plenty of current. Third new battery in two years, meaning this is the fourth battery since this happened. I replaced a three year old interstate with a new one. Interstate dealer tested that one and pronounced it bad. Installed the second new Interstate. Went to a Bosch Service Center, when that one kept going dead, thinking it had to be the rebuilt alternator, where the guy swore that it had to be a bad battery, and that he had seen multiple bad Interstate batteries in a row. That replacement did last almost a month before it repeated the cycle of low batteries. So much for his credability. New afterglow relay and glow plugs, New ignition switch (in case that was my intermittant connection). Verified clean connections in the glowplug circuit. It is just fine on a long trip even with my Euro headlights (with 100/130 H4s)on at night even with long periods of high beams. After a few days of wifes' errands around town, it will just refuse to start caused by a low battery, but will quickly start with a jump. What have I missed? I guess I should try my switch experiment sometime soon. The re-charging routine is beginning to get rather old. :^) Barry -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Mitch Haley Sent: Wednesday, August 24, 2005 7:41 PM To: Mercedes mailing list Subject: Re: [MBZ] wierd SDL charging problem. [MBZ] cars from the years of our births
Well, I'd be in the market for a nice 1972 220D that hopefully has good blower motors in it. I would be awfully tempted if there was one in my area, but haven't come across one yet. Kevin in Hillsboro Oregon 1978 300CD 200K+ miles, Vinnie
Re: [MBZ] Anyone heard of a GLK?
I haven't read any of his books, but have spent many hours online reading of his 'round the world trip in the GLK. Great articles, great photos, great insights. As far as the car, I read the development article and road test in Automobile Magazine a few years ago. -- Rory Morrison Oroville, WA 1985 300SD 1982 300TD

The hybrid's advantage is in stop and go traffic, where braking energy goes into the battery instead of heating up the brake disks, and the engine can be shut off at stoplights and restarted by the electric drive motor.

I thought about 1963 Caddy and 1963 MBz (four door, four cyl, manny on the column shift) project cars in my youth, but I really want a 1963 Apollo 3500GT or 1963 Corvette coupe. (Corvette price is getting crazy, but the next time I see an Apollo for 10k I'm grabbing it)

Gotta love that good o'le fecal-oral contamination route. We've got a town up here that had its water supply contaminated with E. coli and 6 people died as a result. Re: [MBZ] cars from the years of our births
Not a diesel, they did not use catalytic converters back then. Also, catalytic converters were not mandated back then. EPA standards drove most car makers to catalytic converters that year. Datsun (Nissan) met our EPA standards until 1977 or so without them. [MBZ] WVO-diesel mix project
This past weekend, we took a trip to Minnesota running on about 70% vegoil. 70% was a bit much for the 50degree mornings in the Twin Cities, but it made it fine with extra glow time. We took about 35 gallons of oil along for the trip. We purchased 32.942 gallons of diesel on the trip and drove 1596 miles which is 48.4 MPG on diesel. Adding in the 35 (estimated high) gallons of vegoil and I ran about 23.5 MPG. Fuel cost (est vegoil at $.50/gal) was $84.70 running about $0.05/mile. My initial cost on filters/pumps/plumbing/storage is around $110. I have 2 pumps, because I upgraded to a self-priming pump. I still have some minor changes I'd like to make to the design. The first 2 are adding pressure guages after the filters to monitor how clogged the filters are, and using air pressure to transfer oil by pressurizing the barrels and pushing the oil through the filters. When I get a chance, I will take pictures of my setup for any curious folk. Luther KB5QHU Alma, Ark '83 300SD (happily running diesel/WVO mix) '82 300CD slate grey, black interior, 152,xxx mi
