[MBZ] Roy Orbison's 600, collector auction report

2005-12-11 Thread Rich Thomas
Went for $74k at the auction this afternoon. Was black/black, pretty
nice shape. Afterwards I talked to the woman who was selling it and she
was a bit disappointed that it did not draw more. Oh well. She looked
like she did not need the extra few $k. There was another 600, gold with
an avocado/pea-green interior (I use the term avocado/pea-green instead
of the baby product color it more closely resembled) that was also on
the block, it was nicer shape but I missed what it went for, but I think
it was much less than RoyO's, maybe in the 30s. Both had TVs in the
back, like 9" tubes. Very Bond-ish.

A Bentley Turbo R, red/black, beautiful went for $12k. That engine bay
was crammed with motor and a turbo sitting at the top right front next
to the alternator. That did not look good to me, but all the bits were
in good shape. Would have been an interesting buy for no more than it
went for.

A decent looking 64or5 230SL 4spd sold for $12k, about the right price,
needed a bit of body/paint work but it was a pretty little car.

A '34 or so custom-bodied Deusy went for $1.375M, awesome car, I could
see myself in it. Take a week just to polish the chrome. It sounded
sweet too.

The tobacco-settlement lawyer who was selling a bunch from his
collection bought that Jay Leno HD motorcycle with all the signatures on
it for $1M, it was being recycled from some other charity thing (9-11?)
it originally sold for to a Katrina charity.

Lots of 60s/70s muscle, some 50s stuff. A 90? 560SEC went for $6k,
looked nice, seemed to be running well, was in good shape.

I did not buy anything, though there was a blinged-out Hummer that
looked really really nice.

Oh, and there were some Astons on display, I liked the black DB9
convertible, though the interior color was sort of a blah papaya
red/orange, and it looked awful for $188k.

Some people were parading around these large horses, Gypsy Vanners, that
look like smaller Percherons, they had a colt that was very cute, and a
breeding stallion that was extremely gentle. I had been eating a candy
cane, and noticed something breathing on my neck, I turned around and
there was a big (huge) nose and mouth "RIGHT THERE" trying to get a
sniff or a chunk. Was too funny, like my dog trying to give kisses. He
was a bit big to do a belly rub, but he liked his chin scratched.

Not bad for the collection of someone who wore his prescription sunglasses
on stage one night because he'd lost his pair of regular glasses. What did
Roy have, wasn't it a six octave range in his voice?

Re: [MBZ] Buying a car in GA and registering it in OK

2005-12-11 Thread L . Mark Finch
I suggest checking the Web sites of the Bureaus of Motor Vehicles in
both states. You may find some information and even downloadable forms
there.

A few months ago I bought a car in Florida to register in Indiana. I
already knew what the Indiana requirements were -- a title and a bill
of sale -- so I got those. Florida had a Web form for a bill of sale so
I used that to make the seller feel better, but it could have been
written on a cocktail napkin and met the legal requirements.

Before I left for Florida to pick up my car, I called my insurance
agent and told him what I was up to. He mailed me a proof of insurance
card, which I took with me, and I took along a current plate from one
of my other cars for the trip home. That's not legal, but it made me
feel better -- and if I had been stopped for some reason, I had enough
documentation to prove that I was the legal owner of the car and that I
was covered by insurance. Got home without incident, and the car is now
legally registered.

Tom,

Check with the Ok DMV to make sure what paper work you will
need to have to get it Titled in Ok.
Just to be safe have the Seller get the Ga. Title Notarized when
you buy the car (DAMHIK).

What he said. When I lived in West Virginia, we brought cars into the
state from Mississippi and Missouri and registered them with no problem.
(Even out-of-state inspection stickers are valid in WV.) When I
bought my 300D in Ohio (and I lived less than a mile from the state
line), I had to send the title back to the seller to be notarized. No
one could tell me why only Ohio titles have to be notarized, but that's
the way it is.

So I guess the moral of the story is assume nothing when buying a car in
another state.

I think someone on this list once described it as "the sound of serious
work getting done." I agree that it's a nice sound, once you've gotten
used to it.

I always thought the 2.0L aircooled flat four in my VW Bus had a
particular music to it, as well, even if other people have compared the
sound of that engine to everything from a metal stamping plant to a keg
of nails being rolled down a staircase. ;) With any engine, after a
while you learn when it sounds "right," and that sound takes on a
pleasant association. Any change it it draws your attention.

Bottom line is, as long as you carry insurance on the vehicle (liability,
that is), it makes no difference what plates, if any.
And it is help full to be able to proof it is not stolen.
All states sell you a 30 day permit for a measly 20 bucks (+/-). Keeps all
the guesswork and 'he said' out.

I think it's a sequentially-shifted transmission. On that kind of
transmission, gear changes are manually commanded but the shifting
itself is done automatically. F1 cars use these, with paddles or
buttons to command upshifts and downshifts. Often there's even
automatic rev-matching on downshifts.

If you look carefully there are moments when you can see a big digital
display on the dash showing what gear the transmission is in. It's on
the right side, near the 2 o'clock position on the wheel. Most of the
time it's covered by the driver's hand or washed out by the sun, from
the camera's perspective.

I used left-over Diesel Purge, since I'd just finished doing a purge.
(On my VW I once used ATF.) After maybe a dozen strokes of the primer
pump I had no more air coming out. Tightened the banjo bolt and the car
started right up.

I poured the diesel from the old filter into a jar and looked at it. It
had so much crap floating in it I didn't even want to put it back in the
tank, much less pour it into the new filter.

That's what I did when I bought a van in PA and drove it to MI. To
handle the proof of insurance, I called up my insurance agent and gave
them the VIN, and they faxed an insurance binder to me immediately.

I probably could have gotten away without doing any of that, but it was
reassuring to know I was legal and had the paperwork to prove it.

I bought a 300 TD in Atlanta today and drove it to Mississippi with no tag
and just the paperwork you descrobed. The lady said the tag belonged to
them, not the car and they can put it on the next car they buy.

I took the chance that it was either okay or the trooper would cut me some
slack. I got home without a problem.

Re: [MBZ] sequester H2O vs disperse H2O (was fuel additive)

2005-12-11 Thread Christopher McCann
some additives claim to be water sequester-ers...to me, this means that they
SEPARATE the water out. Water, being heavier than fuel, goes to the bottom
where it nicely gets sucked up by your fuel line. It seems that you would only
want to SEQUESTER if you have a water separator down the line...but if you
have a water separator down the line, what's the point of sequestering?

A DISPERSANT disperses water...as in breaks it up into the fuel, I think,
right? In the summer, this is fine, it gets burned off in teeeny amounts
dispersed through the fuel. But in the winter, these little water droplets can
freeze and accumulate in the fuel filter, plugging it. (I think the OM603 has
a heater b4 the filter that would melt those little ice balls and put you back
to the "summer burn off scenario"

  Am I understanding this correctly?

  Thanks,

In real cold weather where its below freezing all the time I use about 4oz
of Diesel Kleen at every fillup. In New England temps vary WILDLY so it might
be 40F in the day time and 10F at night. Marshall says water will condense
into the tank any time temp drops 20 degrees so Diesel Kleen gives me some
water sequestering. It also raises the cetane which makes cold starting easier.
I noticed that Diesel Kleen smells alot like Diesel Purge so I tried using it
in larger concentrations occasionally (like once every three months) to see if
it would mask Hammies failing injector(s) and it does. When the idle gets bad
I run him down to about 1/4 tank of fuel and put in a whole bottle of Diesel
Kleen (enough for 50 gallons), drive 30-40 miles and fill up. Loping idle and
hard starting disappears. I know its masking the problem but its cheap...

used to it.

I always thought the 2.0L aircooled flat four in my VW Bus had a

2005-12-11 Thread OK Don
When I bought my last car in Kansas, I drove home with the Kansas tag
on it, then mailed the tag back after I got the Oklahoma tag. I had
the PO notorize the title, even though there was no Kansas requirement
for it, took to the tag agent in OK with the bill of sale, and had no
problem at all. You have to drive that car when you get the tag - they
verify the VIN.

The sound of the old horizontal-opposed aircooled vw was a song with a
message, just like the old folk tradition.

I can't tell you how many times I have been stuck next to an old V-dub
at the light and thought, what a jerk, he needs to gap his valves, tune
his carb, do the 98 cent tune-up.

The old VW engine would give you everything if you just gave it routine
maintenance, and it would sing a song of sorrow if you did not. I only
gave up mine because I lived in a metro area and felt I needed more
metal around me to protect my life.

Maybe its time now to look for another old 'dub.

I know exactly what you mean. I think a lot of people don't realize how
well they can run; they assume that a rough idle and boggy throttle
response is normal for those cars, when in reality they just need a
little TLC.

My Bus is really where I learned how to work on cars. A VW is perfect
for that because it's simple and easy to work on, but requires frequent
attention.

I'd love to have a Ghia or a Beetle, but right now I don't have a good
place to work on cars. An old VW is a money pit if you have to pay
someone else to work on it. I gave up my Bus partly due to lack of
space to work on it, and partly because it was suffering from terminal
rust-out, thanks to having spend its entire life in Michigan. When you
start getting snow drifts *inside* a vehicle, it's pretty far gone.

OK titles have to be notarized.

So I guess the moral of the story is assume nothing when buying a car in
another state.

span. Is there an adjustment on the timing relay to extend the time?

NOTE: this only applies to cars up through 1980 which have external
temperature sensors. Starting in 81, the sensor was built into the glow plug
relay
and measured ambient temperature.

If you diagnosis is correct and your glow plugs are turning off after 5
seconds, you may have a bad relay. There are no adjustments. There is a
temperature sensor on the driver's side of the head (one of two) that you
could
disconnect and then try your timing test again. (The other sensor is for your
engine temperature display, so no harm if both are disconnected for this test)

If the sensor has shorted, the timing will be the shortest possible interval
allowed by the components, if it is open (like disconnected) the interval
will be the longest. NOTE: I ran mine for years with the sensor disconnected.

Try it, what can you loose?

A DISPERSANT disperses water...as in breaks it up into the fuel, I think, right? In the summer, this is fine, it gets burned off in teeeny amounts dispersed through the fuel. I know exactly what you mean. I think a lot of people don't realize how
well they can run; they assume that a rough idle and boggy throttle
response is normal for those cars, when in reality they just need a
little TLC.

My Bus is really where I learned how to work on cars. A VW is perfect
for that because it's simple and easy to work on, but requires frequent
attention.

The old VW engine would give you everything if you just gave it routine
maintenance, and it would sing a song of sorrow if you did not. I only
gave up mine because I lived in a metro area and felt I needed more
metal around me to protect my life.

Maybe its time now to look for another old 'dub.

Re: [MBZ] (no subject)

2005-12-11 Thread Peter Frederick
A "banjo bolt" is a hollow bolt that has a banjo shaped fitting under
it with a hose of some type sticking out at a right angle. Hard to
miss.

Size depends on application -- the one for the turbo will be a 15 or
17, I'd guess. The ones on the IP are 17s if I remember correctly, and
you must be careful, the inlet and outlet bolts are NOT the same -- the
outlet has a very small hole in it and acts to pressurize the IP. If
you swap them, the engine won't run.

Oh, I'm perfectly happy to work on a car in an unsheltered parking lot.
I've done it many times. My landlord feels differently about it, though.

Yeah, that's pretty ugly.

My favorite limo-for-sale post was one for a limo camper conversion.
The guy had taken the pop top off a VW Westfalia camper and installed it
on a Lincoln stretch limo. It fit surprisingly well. You could just
picture the guy with a limo and a VW in his driveway, looking from one
to the other while scratching his chin and going, "Hmm..."

In real world terms I'm not, I'm using it to mask bad injectors, to raise the
cetane level of the fuel and to clean the fuel system on a car which was abused
before I got it. (the "new" 190D) I'd also thought it would sequester water but
it looks like that isn't the case.
Maybe this winter I'll try the supplement again. As the 190D has relatively
new injectors its needs in an additive are different than the 240D.
