[MBZ] Porsche 916

2006-03-07 Thread RELNGSON
Saw one in California in 1980, an aquaintance knew someone who got one
stored in a barn for years, sold as a 914, cheap. Same as a 914 except for
the 916 badge and the two extra cylinders, not visible from outside.

Obviously a clone, since the only one (of the 12 built) to come to the US
first went to Brumos Porsche in Florida and is now owned by Automobile Atlanta.
Looks like a 914 to the uninitiated but aside from the body shell is a
different car. Powered by a mechanical injection 911S engine. Welded on steel
roof.
Fender flares. Full leather interior. Seven inch wide wheels. Fiberglass front
and rear bumpers.

Not a 914-6 which was a production car.

Re: [MBZ] Ebay 240D

2006-03-07 Thread R A Bennell
I would love to have the auxiliary tank in the trunk. Wouldn't keep it full
all of the time but would be nice on occasion to fill when the price was
right and also to go where ever and not worry about looking for fuel. A win
win situation most of the time. Lose a bit of trunk space but that would be
ok.

A handsome car, a twin except for the sunroof and the automatic, to a
relative's car that sold for $3500 about 15 years back. Still wish I'd
bought it.

As to carrying around 400 extra pounds of fuel and tank in a car that is a
snail in stock form, what the hell is the point? Fuel is available
everywhere.

That was my plan. It's better to do repairs after the sale. What
 would
cause it to pee all over once the cable is removed? Is there
 anything
that can be done to avoid it? I know that bleeding injectors and
 changing
fuel filters will certainly make a mess (peeing all over).

No, what I mean is the feeling the PO gets as you fiddle under
the hood and then drive off in his 'won't run' car. Just like
you peed on him.

Do it around the corner, have mercy on the guy.

Oh man! What am I in for with this old slushy 240D?

An exercise in patience, I'd say.

Can anybody tell me what the normal driving/shifting characteristics
of this 79 240D would be? It seems reluctant to downshift on its
own which doesn't help matters any. (And rarely [if ever] starts
out in 1 unless the lever is in L.) But the linkage is already
pulling as hard on the tranny's lever as will let the throttle go
to full stop.

This car has the later (when did they start?) 8 hole wheels - making

[MBZ] Brake Sway Bar

2006-03-07 Thread Dan Weeks
If it's your 126, I had the same thing happen. My indy designed and
had machined a collar that went over the end of the sway bar and
accepted the stock MBZ bushings and nut. Collar held on with six set
screws and JB Weld. Indy did it on his own 126 and it was fine for 7
months when he did mine. Mine's been fine since, about 2 months. Guy
had an extra made when he did mine; might sell it to you, but be
warned that you have to cut, mark, and install VERY accurately, and
also that the sway bar is the hardest steel he'd ever cut--said it
took an hour and a half with a cutting wheel to get through it. Can't
cut it with a torch because you ruin the temper.

The indy is:

Cost for the whole job to me was ca. $450

Dan

Which car?
126 is total PITA. 123 Not too bad. I have no clue about 201 or 124 chassis.
IIRC someone here had one break on a 300sd and had their indy attempt a
repair. I have no clue how well it is holding up. Under NO circumstances,
continue to drive the car. The sway bar/ torsion bar is an integral part of
the suspension.

How's the kickdown switch? Does the kickdown solinoid click when

If not, that would be quite depressing!

Switch clicks, but I've not checked into the electrical part of it
yet. Never even had the fuse box cover off yet! But the lights work,
looks like I might drive it to band tonight. Just me and the boy...
According to the Haynes I've already adjusted the linkage as it
should be done. I think.

Still got old fuel in it, I must say I'm not too keen on filling
it up or anything like that!

I'm up a 3 socket extension, that was what was plugging the
second hose to the heater core (due to GM valve being flanged
in there).

to start over.

For about 800 bucks, TR sold me 4 new knock-off wheels and 4 Kuhmo

It has been a perfect installation and have been extremely happy with

Yes, I do have a set of lugs for the spare tucked away but at least
all 4 wheels are now of the same variety.

If you're going used, be sure to get the right offset. The 8 holes

You undo the nut first, then pull gently on it as it's coming up.
It'll try to overshoot and that's what gets it the rest of the way
out. You don't just pull it out forcibly.

When installing you start it down and feed it the tail. When it stops
(not all the way in most likely) you put in the nut then cycle it up
and down again and you're done.

Don't know from practical experience, but I've talked to a local MB

interested in and how he felt about them. Apparently there are a
couple, several?, transmissions that do that in MB's past. They were
designed to start out in 2nd, and L/1st was only for hard pulls from
stop, so the driver would have to know that's how he wanted to start
and downshift manually (in an automatic) to get to 1st . this
*may* be how this transmission works.

In fact, at the time I thought it was so weird I googled it and found
some info on how to change that characteristic. That might be the

Both being 115 you will be happy to have that donor car. Scavenge the
check straps, glass, all sorts of bits, and then go to town getting the
240 running really well. I suspect that after 30 years the IP just
needs to be replaced. The seller seems to have done a poor job doing
it right.

I would not pay much over $250 for a 115 that does not stay running.
The 240 is a step up in complexity from Gump. The difference is not so
great but the shop manual is really handy in getting those diffs sorted
out.

[MBZ] Tandem pump TD and TE

2006-03-07 Thread Loren Faeth
My TD (87) and TE (88) both have Vickers Type 119 tandem pumps. I set out
to rebuild both, as the TD pump is leaking and the TE does not have working
hydraulic suspension when i got it. I took out he TE pump and disassembled
it without special tools.

There are 4 bolts holding the pump together. (13mm wrench)
The rear pump is PS and it is a vane pump. Be very careful to keep all the
canes in the impeller as you disassemble. If a vane does come out,the worn
part of one face should be on the counterclockwise side as installed, and
out of the impeller.
The impeller is held on by a circlip. Once the circlip is out, the
impeller will come off the shaft and the bottom plate can be removed.

The front pump is the suspension pump, and it has 4 piston pumps driven by
a cam. To disassemble, remove each pump. I used two 3/16 pin punches and
a screwdriver between them to turn each pump out. The pump has a brass
body. Repeat for eeach of the 4 pumps. Be careful not to loose the piston
and spring as you remove each pump.

There is a roll pin holding the shaft seal retainer in the housing. Remove
the roll pin with a 3/32 pin punch. The shaft assembly will now come
out. Disassemble and pay attention to which side is up as you take the
pieces out. There is another roll pin to remove the cam. it is
directional: there is a small hole on the upper side, or rear facing as
installed in the car.

You are now ready to remove the seal and replace the parts in the kit. I
don't have the kit yet, so I can't talk about the installation/reassembly
yet. More to follow.

But I see that others concur that a differing tire on front back are a

Unless you're thinking of two jacks per cylinder, you only need two jacks.
On a four-cylinder, two pistons go up when the other two go down.

Ah. I get the picture.

I was walking away from the computer when this thought hit me: If equal
traction in the tires - frnt. vs. rear - is critical, then those with big
fat tires in the rear and skinnier ones in the front must be really putting
themselves at risk.

Brian

On 3/6/06, Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Each tire type has different rubber, and hence different friction
characteristics. These days, I don't think you could find a non-radial
tire less than 25 years old, so that's not a problem (radial/bias belt
tire mixes can be lethal), but the difference in adhesion to the road
can be quite dramatic. Having one tire track better than the other
leads to unstable handling, and in an emergency, you can loose control.

The best possible mismatch is for one pair on the front and one pair
 on the rear.

That said, I've driven any number of cars with mismatched tires, but
believe me, a full set makes a big difference! It really is best to
stick with all four the same make and similar age.

Do you like real old Macs? I come across stuff all the time. In fact
the Summer before last, someone loaded my parts 300Sd up wit a bunch
of old Macs. I thought of trying to do something with them but
couldn't come up with anything practical.
I have a bunch (6) fruit flavored iMacs. 2 slot loaders I use around
here on my home network and the others (1 slot loader and 3 tray-
loaders) I loaned to friends who wanted to try a Mac. I gave
another tray-loader to Richarde a couple of years back. Everyone is
still using them and most have switched or rarely use their PCs.
These old machines just keep plugging away. The DV slot loaders have
FireWire and can take 1GB RAM they run Tiger just fine for machines
made in 1999 and 2000.I often wonder why some folks keep using the
earlier ones that can't be upgraded to the most modern OS when the
iMacs are almost free to a good home.

What's your reason? If you don't mind me asking.

[MBZ] 914-6

2006-03-07 Thread RELNGSON
Coulda sworn the six cylinder production version was badged 916 as
well, but that's been a long time ago. Certainly, the 914 with a six cylinder
was very difficult to tell from the four cylinder.

Welll, uh, not exactly. Five stud wheels instead of four with different
size tires, 911 steering column and wheel, different instruments. Gold letters
on the engine lid instead of chrome. Different muffler and tailpipe. And of
course the number on the rear. And no one would ever confuse the clatter of a
VW
engine for the sound of a 911 engine, even if it was a lowly T.

Why do people have performance cars and drive like weenies?

The ones who have been owners for a while may feel they have nothing to
prove. The car says it all. There are, however, plenty of buyers of performance

realize that the thing is not a race car after all as they head off into the

It's because very few people check their HTML pages with a validator to
make sure they follow the W3C standards. When a browser finds
non-standard or broken HTML, there's nothing to define how it should
act. The result is a page that works fine in whatever browser the
person designing it checked it with, but misbehaves in others.

Validating your own pages is easy; there's an online tool for it here:

That's not a terrible situation because it tends to encourage
understeer, which most people find controllable.

When you can get yourself in trouble is when you have worse traction in
back -- for example, two new tires in front and two relatively bald ones
in the back, on a wet road. Then you're likely to get ambushed in a

If you are in the deep south and want maximum cooling, try this:

I believe a 9.6oz can of autofrost is supposed to equal a 12oz freon.

Jim,

Don't know from practical experience, but I've talked to a local MB
private specialist in the past about certain vehicles I have been
interested in and how he felt about them. Apparently there are a couple,
several?, transmissions that do that in MB's past. They were designed to
start out in 2nd, and L/1st was only for hard pulls from stop, so the
driver would have to know that's how he wanted to start and downshift
manually (in an automatic) to get to 1st . this
*may* be how this transmission works.

In fact, at the time I thought it was so weird I googled it and found
some info on how to change that characteristic. That might be the google

[MBZ] 1983 300D - Glow Plug Light Problem

2006-03-07 Thread RKMERCEDES
Good Morning,

On my way to work this morning I had a problem starting my car and
noticed the glow plug light did not come on. I turned the key on and off
several
times and the glow plug light came on every 3rd or 4th time. The car finally
started and I made it to work on time. I never had any issues like this
before.

Is this symptomatic of bad glow plugs or should I look at something else?

Check the glow plugs first. That's just about exactly what mine did for a
bit before I checked them and at that time I only had 1 out of the 5
working.

Just pop a multimeter at the end of the glow plug (where the wire attaches
and to a ground) and look for 1 ohm. If it's much more, it's probably dead.

Better is to pull the connector off of the GP relay and measure
each pin to ground there. 0.6 ohms is the value. While it's still
plugged in all but one of them are wired in parallel and will tend
to mask each other, most meters aren't that good at measuring low

You might want to chase the threads, its possible they got a little
out of whack when the bolt came out. Also use blue LocTite to avoid a
repeat performance. Maybe even pull the bolt out of the other side
and put some LocTite on it too.
