Re: [MBZ] 1979 230 D Electrical Starting Problem
Check the engine ground strap, down under the firewall attaches above/side of the transmission. Mine went loose at one time, sorta acted like that, with some occasional fireworks at cranking. Battery is at 13.08 volts across battery terminals, no signs the alternator is foul. The radio works when ignition is in the #1 radio position and when ignition switch is in the start position I am getting a reading on my fuel gage, just no lights on panel and not even a click from the (soleniond on starter???) car. Just need some exact paths to take to trouble shoot. Looking at the one line electrical drawing looks like there is a transmission in park switch. I do not see a relay in the starter circuit to go bad. But if it is a bad starter or coil would this cause the panel lights to not work? Any help would appreciate it as this is my only driver. Larry, To echo what John and Werner said. I use Mobil 1 ATF in my 240D and my 300D 2.5t. They both shift well in cold. On the 240D I had a before and after comparison. [MBZ] W110 questions
Going to look at a 200D fintail this week. Any particular areas to pay special attention to?? Car has some rust but I am not sure just how much. Is this a model that once the rust starts it is pretty much terminal in the sense that you can't really get rid of it? Also wondering what to expect performance wise?? Can I expect it to be on par with a 240D or is that overly optimistic?? Thanks in advance Eric Crunched 85 300CD 107K No need to miss a message. Get email on-the-go with Yahoo! Mail for Mobile. Re: [MBZ] W110 questions
!! The 200D is a 110.110. They are great fun. The rust question depends on your tolerance. If you want a perfect car or a show car, the rust will be quite expensive. If you want a car to drive, rust and all, the 110 can look pretty bad and still be roadworthy. I drove a 65 190Dc for several winters that was very rusty. It was great and dependable transportation. Even in its rusty state, it wiped out a ford product that pulled out in front of it, and still drove away. It lost a chrome strip under the doors and the corner of the bumper punched through the RF tire. I put on the spare and pulled out the bumper and drove on. Rust in the rockers is bad. Plan on carrying a scissors jack, and not using the stock jack it the jack points are rusty. Also watch for rust around the front shock towers. My rustbucket 190Dc had one shock tower about to bust loose. Some sheet metal from an old appliance and a bunch of sheet metal screws repaired it, but was an ugly repair. As Herr Doktor Booth said, inner fenders and rockers. If the rockers are not too bad, but there are holes rusted behind the front tire or in front of the rear tire, those can be patched pretty easily, and that will add years to the life of the rockers. You might also consider cleaning up the inside of the rockers and spraying in POR15. If the rockers rust too bad, the body sags and the doors stick, or become inoperable. If anyone tries to fix rockers, they can sag the body and give you back a mess, unless it is a really good body man. Have fun. Send pics is you buy it Performance? Dunno about autos. 4 speed is no racer, but decent. Top speed is about 70 They are not SDLs on the interstate. Overall, probably similar to the 240D. The body is lighter than a 123, but power is less, 60 Hp. Put an OM 616 in it (not easy) and it is a relative screamer. AN OM 615 is a reasonable conversion, probably. [MBZ] Head gasket fun
Finally got to changing the head gasket on the 87 300D today, in hopes that a new gasket will cure the oil collecting in the coolant tank problem and that I won't discover a cracked head (yes, its a 14 head, probably the original with 262,000 miles now). Between tracking down my engine hoist (never store your stuff at someone else's barn.) and a torpedo heater (9 F last night), we didn't get started anywhere near as early as I'd have liked, and I really don't want to do this job anyway. No major problems until we finally got to removing the head bolts, and found four that weren't really tight (between #4 and #5 cylinders -- #4 was low on compression with a terrible knock that turned out to be badly installed pressure valve holder seals when I got the car some years back. Then, the last bolt on the left side broke off at the start of the threads. So the car is sitting at my buddy's barn in bits, head still on, and I'm going shopping tomorrow for head bolts, a new belt, some jounce bumpers for the front struts, and probably some things I've not found yet. Never rains but it pours, I guess. Any suggestions on getting the black goo out of the cooling system? Upper radiator hose and heater hoses seem to be full of it, along with the expansion tank.. Whoo, I think this one will be enough for me for a while! My hands are gonna ache for days as it is, and I'm less than half done! Peter
Re: [MBZ] Head gasket fun
Don't fret too much Peter. I pulled the head from mine with a chain winch suspended from a bit less than 8' ceiling in a too small garage. Came out all right with the turbo exhaust manifold attached even though I didn't have the winch very well positioned. Kinda resist the temptation to put the head back on with those bits detached. I did that just to save myself the aggravation of positioning that big chunk over the block, but I'm here to state that while all those bits can be reassembled with the head installed that it's not exactly an exercise you'll want to remember. I did apply a thin smear of Hylomar HPF to the new gasket and so far no leaks that I've been able to find but then it's only got ~150mi on it as yet. Oh yeah, and absolutely no residual cooling system pressure (fingers well crossed) After it's got a few more miles on it I'll hook up the forced open t'stat and the flushing connection to the top hose and give it a Cascade enema. But that's just for oil; dunno about other forms of black goo. -joe
Re: [MBZ] Head gasket fun
I understand - that's why I've not done mine yet. My head gasket started leaking 3.5 years ago, I put stuff in to keep it sealed decided that I'd fix it when it gets worse. 150,000 miles later and the symptoms are covered up as long as I keep stuff in the radiator. Maybe it will get bad enough one day for me to pull the head.. Hello Everyone, I'm asking on behalf of my friend who is considering becoming an MB owner. He is looking at buying a 2000 C230, very nicely equipped with a several fairly rare (in the W202) factory options. The car is coming from WI Simonson (an MB dealership) in Santa Monica, Ca. The car is not starmarked, but they have done quite a bit to it in their service center. My friend is concerned about buying this car since it has 92k miles and no warranty left. I wanted to know what everyone knows about the 4 vs 6 cyl in this car and general relaibility and longevity of this model. Thanks, Chase M.K.

Re: [MBZ] 126 rear window leakage
Peter - the 126's seem to have more than their share of water leakage around the back window, especially on the left side. I'm told that it is usually from a failed rubber gasket that leads to rust through of the metal, all pretty well hidden from outside view. The repair involves removing the trim and window, repairing the sheet metal, and then replacing and resealing everything. Removing the existing window involves the risk of breakage, so add the cost of a new window - some may need to be replaced due to separation (fogging) in the safety ply layer between the glass. And aftermarket windows have a different defroster layout in the glass, too. Just putting some sealer at the rubber/glass edge won't help, as the leak is usually between the rubber and the metal body sheet metal, hidden under the trim. Cheapest solution - a garage or car cover! Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 15, Issue 71 - POS SDL
Hi Peter - I share your pain. I was having the rear window replaced due to a crack, and constant water problems in the trunk. When they removed the rear window they could not install a new one as the rust was just to extensive. I took it to a body shop I know [$37.50 / hour] and had the entire rusty areas cut out and new pieces created to replace them. They cut @3/4 metal strips and formed the lower window flange and then bonded the pieces together to create as pretty accurate rendition of the origional. Most of the part that holds the bottom of the window in had to be replaced. That it took the wondow folks 4 hours to install the rear window suggests that looks can be deceiving, but the result was good. I had a few other items done at the same time, but the whole window part of the project was less than $500 [I think - I've slept since then]. That effectively removed the only rust on my car, so I think it was worth it. I was surprised the rust was so bad, and so completely removed. I've had a mostly dry trunk since then, though I think I still have a small leak around the trunk seal somewhere. Never been a problem, though. Good luck with it. I think the biggest factor is having a body shop you know you can trust. Yes, that also works, seems there's a series that uses 4 digits starting with 0, and another with 3 digits. But the 3 digit ones don't seem to work on this version of OE! Re: [MBZ] French GPs - Was 300SD GPs dont always go out
I suspect that DG meant German brands (Beru/Bosch), rather than the production source. I've had great luck with French-made Bosch plugs. In fact, I've never had issues with any OEM French production parts...except for the rear tail light lenses on Volvo 7-series wagons; those suck. When I recently bought my Bosch GPs, I noticed that they were made in France according to what was written on the package. Is there a type of Bosch made in Germany and a type of Bosch that is made in France?

Anyone have a picture of one of these reserve tanks? I would think that there would be some safety concerns, especially is used in a gasser. Yesterday, the alley was iced up so we had to park on the street overnight, with no way to plug in the block heater. Temp. was 17 degrees this AM with a wind chill of maybe 5. We glowed and kept glowing 10 seconds after the light went out. Engine turned but would not fire. Tried twice more, using the gas pedal, but to no avail! I had her pop the hood and try a fourth time while I watched - still turned but no dice. Battery was strong, fortunately. I stared at the engine, thought deeply and then fiddled with something in the engine area. I then myself tried to start it again using the same preglow procedure. This time the engine fired instantly and ran flawlessly. Question: What exactly did I do under the hood? Hint: I have never done this before or heard of this tactic being used as a technique for getting a balky diesel to start in cold weather. This doesn't prove or mean anything but then again, it might. Good luck, and apologies in advance if this puzzler is wya too elementary and an insult to the collective Okiebenz intelligence. That prevents seal hardening and greatly increases compressor life. It's not necessary for the later systems (124/201, later 126) that use the Nippondenso compressors that function whenever the system is in defrost (and the temperature is in the correct range).
