I might have missed it, somebody might have already mentioned the relay
under the consol forward of the shifter. That went out on me during a road

Re: [MBZ] FW: Re: M102 knocks on startup: Why?

2007-05-28 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Like I said earlier, it's hard to tell without listening to the sound but I
would discount bottom end troubles because they are virtually bullet proof
unless they have been starved of oil.
Unfortunatley in the US they never officially got the 102.980 (CIS and non
hydraulic tappets) unless some early W201's where sold there. 84/85 was the
change over from 102.980 to 102.962.
So finding a mechanic with experience in the early 102 motors is going to be
hard.

Sadly, that means probably a main or rod bearing if it's not the chain
tensioner

Do check the fan clutch and serpentine belt, though -- a bad belt can
cause a knock. Sounds just like a rod sometimes, but usually doesn't
go away when the oil pressure comes up though.

Success, it started working at about push number 30. I applied Deoxit into
all the cracks and I'm back in working order.

Thanks to all of you, once again the list pulled me out. Thanks Kleb.

Yes. Most of these cars have only one flasher, and it's
switched between the column switch selector or to all at
once by the hazard switch. And there are plenty of systems
where the hazard switch _is_ the flasher.

I thought all the Craftsman hand tools were USA products, but I haven't
paid attention for ten years or so. 10-15 years ago, I could get very
economical, moderately high quality (a small step below Craftsman or S-K)
made in USA Stanley hand tools at Walmart. Example, 3/8" flex handle ratchet

No, it's not your Benz. It's not intended to be and was used simply as an

They often start to come unscrewed, I've tightened a few which has

the job, or perhaps even a pair of hemostats. If the valve itself

Possibly the nasty oil/R134a combination has eaten the valve's rubber
seal. Nobody ever talks about replacing the valves with R134a-rated

Also, should I be seeing a lot of oil, or is that a sign that there's

Oil is mixed with the refrigerant, so any leak should bring some

Luther,

Any style torque wrench will give you accurate results, its all a matter of
preference. Most of the old school guys prefer the beam style, but most of the
newer dial and click style are very accurate. As for brand, I was never fond of
the Snap-On just because its way over priced. You can find just as good quality
in a Proto, Craftsman or even a Mac.

[MBZ] Another 190D Have Questions Before Buy

2007-05-28 Thread Zoltan Finks

We have run across another 190D (87) and are considering buying this one.
Unfortunately, it a 2.5 automatic, but I guess we are lowering our
standards. Have a few questions that could use yall's sage advice:

The guy claims to have installed a keyless entry (remote) system. I guess I
didn't know that these cars (1987) had electric locks. If not electric, how
could a keyless entry be used?

The car reportedly has almost 250k mi. on it. Am I stupid for looking into
this car with this many miles? I know that these great cars are legendary
for longevity, but I have learned the hard way that the longevity is only
there if decent maintenance has been also. What are some telltale signs I
can look for to help me decide?

He claims that the timing chain has been replaced. I don't know why someone
would replace one unless it had broken. What say you all? If it had broken,
does that mean that some engine components were likely damaged?

He claims that the flex disk has been replaced. Why would someone replace
this?

Thanks for the help,
Brian

Re: [MBZ] Another 190D Have Questions Before Buy

2007-05-28 Thread Hendrik Riessen
The 201's use a vaccum pump (under the rear seat) to operate the locks, easy
job to wire in a remote thingy.
Timing chains and flex discs are wear items and should be replaced BEFORE
they break and do damage.

Given the mileage I'd be worried if those things have not been replaced.

I thought you had to have different valves to be R134 compliant? I.e. R12
and R134 have different "standard" fittings and if you don't change the
valve then you won't be able to use the R134 charge fittings?

[MBZ] can some one help on coolant in 190E

2007-05-28 Thread kok.hong
HI all,

I replaced the radiator about 6 months ago (original radiator leaks after 13
yrs) with an OME radiator (costly but maybe it will last longer). Then I
filled it up with MB coolant (no mixing) and drove it. No problem since then.

Couple of days ago, I decided to run it in the weather of '90sF and distance is
only 10 miles, it went hot and then the light for "low coolant in radiator"
shows up. Immediately, I opened the hood and let it cool. Also, I check the
hoses (top and bottom which returns to the recovery tank) are hot. Next day, I
opened the cap and see the coolant level and is at max.

I started the engine and light is still on even though the ambient temp in the
garage is low ''70F. Coolant temp is zero at start up. I drove it out in the
temp of low '80sF for 7 miles and coolant temp is rising from 0 to 80C and
light is still on. About 5 mins later, coolant temp is 100C and on way back, I
had to cool the engine by turning on the window defroster to keep the engine
temp at 90C. Otherwise it is at 100C or more.

In both cases, AC is on.

Questions:
1) did I screw up the ratio in MB coolant and water?
2) is there a way to measure the specific gravity instead of ratio?
3) drain the radiator and replace with water?
4) is the thermostat faulty? But it was replace about a year ago.

Please help.

Thank you.

[MBZ] M 102 knocks on startup: Why

2007-05-28 Thread Robert Bigham
The majority seems to think the timing chain is making the knock, and the
problem is most
likely in the tensioner. I can go for that.

One says it's a rod knocking. Wash your mouth out with soap! We ain"t
allowing no loose
rods around here! Just kidding. I have heard engines that had main/rod
knocks on startup
because they had excessive and growing bearing clearances. Sounds different
than what I
hear now. I dont think the noise is a rod, although It might be and I just
don't recognize it..

I look at the chain tensioner drawing in the MBZ book Engine 102 and see an oil
supply
passage, a (smaller) oil feed hole, a (smaller still) oil bleeder hole, and a
spring. The only
seal is a sealing washer on the outside meant to keep the oil in the engine.
The book says
the chain is tensioned by the spring and "in dependence of the oil pressure."
But the oil
pressure part is just a matter of orifices. More oil want to get in than wants
to get out: result
is oil pressure ahead of and inside the tensioner. I am unfamiliar with a
check valve on the
oil pickup.

The knock I experience is on cold startup or startup several hours after coming
off the road,
having sustained 80 mph most of the time on the road. No knock in operation
ever.

Unless the oil supply is somehow restricted or some fool enlarged the oil
bleeder hole, the
only thing I see that could be wrong is the spring, which could be worn or
tired. I wonder what
they cost. It should be easy to find out. A chain tensioner assembly for a 5
cylinder diesel
costs about $350 from the Benzes!

Cheers.

They are vacuum locks run by the electric pump in the truck. When they
install those keyless deals they simply install a remote switch that
activates the pump.

Well since these cars are now 20 years old, most of them are going to
have well over 200k on them. If you dont want one over that, be
prepared to pay plenty and have a hard time finding one. You can pretty
much look at a car and tell if it has been maintained or not. If you
cant, then its best to stick to a Honda.

Re: [MBZ] can some one help on coolant in 190E

2007-05-28 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
If your light is coming on but the level is OK, the sensor is bad. The
coolant should be mixed 50/50 with water. That would cause it to run
warmer. Also, if you have your AC on and your temp gets up a little but
the aux fan does not kick on, that could be your problem too. Temp
switch for the fan may be bad.

kok.hong wrote:

HI all,

I replaced the radiator about 6 months ago (original radiator leaks after 13
yrs) with an OME radiator (costly but maybe it will last longer). Then I
filled it up with MB coolant (no mixing) and drove it. No problem since then.

Couple of days ago, I decided to run it in the weather of '90sF and distance is only 10
miles, it went hot and then the light for "low coolant in radiator" shows up.
Immediately, I opened the hood and let it cool. Also, I check the hoses (top and bottom
which returns to the recovery tank) are hot. Next day, I opened the cap and see the
coolant level and is at max.

Thank you.

You should mix your coolant 1:1 with water (dilute it to 50%

Yes, the small plastic gauges Prestone makes to measure the freezing and
boiling temperatures of coolant actually work by measuring the specific
gravity.

Both hoses being hot seem to indicate that the thermostat is opening and
that the coolant is flowing through the radiator. Turning on the defroster
and having the temperature drop shows that there is insufficient cooling,
but that the water pump is indeed pumping water.

Rich Thomas mentioned the possibility of an air bubble. You could
eliminate that by stopping the car on a steep hill (front end up the hill)
and removing the radiator cap, squeezing the hoses to eliminate any air
bubbles, and filling the radiator to the brim.

It seems to me, though, that the symptoms point to insufficient air flow
through the radiator. Does it have a mechanically driven fan or electric
fan? If it's mechanical, is there a thermostatic clutch on the fan? If
it's electric, does it operate?

I've got a KD clicker that I've been using for a few years now that I
really like. I think it was around $130 new on sale( rumor was at the
time that they came out of the same factory as snap ons torque wrenches ).
I have a craftsman electronic torque meter that attaches to a 1/2"
socket, very accurate, but awkward to use, basically only good when
working an engine on the stand., and I have an HF cheapie 1/4 " drive
job to keep all those little 6mm bolts about right.

I don't know about split beams, but on any clicker , keep in mind when
using in temperature extremes, the readings won't be accurate. If it's
real cold out, they will click late ( too tight, if it get's cold
enough, tight enough to get you in trouble ) and if it's real hot out,
they will click too early ( too loose). If I have to work outside in
temperature extremes, I always leave the torque wrench inside for a
while to get it to room temp, then work in short spurts to keep things
even( this is after finding out that hard way what happens if you don't ).

Okay, the gentleman claims he replaced the timing chain as a preventative
measure, and that it had stretched some. I suppose this stretching happens
all the time, and that the valvetrain is not necessarily worn unduly from
it?

He also claims mileage of 30 - 32 city and 38 - 39 hwy. with "steady
driving". I wonder if this means at speeds around 60? Otherwise, those
numbers are higher than I have ever heard with an automatic 2.5.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Mileage

2007-05-28 Thread Peter Frederick
I sincerely wish that I could safely ride a bike around here, but with
high speed SUV traffic on narrow, shoulder-free roads, it's asking for
severe injury or death.

Likewise it would not bother me at all to walk a couple miles to the
train or bus stop to take one of them to work, beats the hell out of
driving all the time.

Peter

Re: [MBZ] Another 190D Have Questions Before Buy

2007-05-28 Thread Peter Frederick
If the chain as been replaced, likely the owner has been doing the
correct maintenance. Chain stretch is something a good Benz mechanic
will check every 30,000 miles or so (on the big maintenance interval)
-- if it exceeds 4 degrees at the crank, roll in a new one. A broken
chain will result in a valve job, at least, likely rods too.

Keyless entry uses a solenoid to unlock the doors, should work just
fine if a decent kit was used.

Unless the head warped somewhere along the line (coolant usage, oil in
the coolant, etc) the engine will likely look nearly brand new -- mine
did when I pulled the head off (603.96 -- head crack problem not found
on the 602), almost no wear on the cylinder bores and no oil
consumption. Lots of leakage due to the warped head, but no burning.
May need a valve job, but unless it shows signs of hard starts cold not
cured by new glow plugs and/or oil consumption, likely it will go
another 250,000. May need new injector nozzles, they usually last
around 250,000 to 300,000 miles.

Bad flex disks cause excessive vibration, and can cause fairly severe
body damage when they fail. Wear item, usually last a couple hundred
thousand miles, but it varies. Worth checking the rear one, too,
although they last longer. So far as I know, the ones on my 72 280 SE
are original, but it only has 250,000 miles or so.

Things to look for: Bad radiator (runs hot, although the 190D may have
an electric fan clutch, in which case it will run hotter in traffic
than a visco clutch, but not higher than 95C). Heavy vibration due to
improper combustion not due to injectors (do a compression check and
leakdown if you suspect something wrong). Banging on shutoff is bad
engine mounts, not a bad job, and not terribly expensive.

Bottom line, do the usual diesel check -- easy starts cold (once the
glow plug light is out, all you should need to do is bump the key in
moderate weather, it should start on the first compression stroke). No
blue smoke, no unusual noises (some clatter is normal cold). No tappet
noise (hydraulic tappets on this one), smooth idle for a diesel.
Transmission should engage reverse quickly and smoothly, with no bangs
or thumps (check differential mounts, though, they go bad). No huge
clouds of black smoke at full throttle, should get noticable turbo
boost without blue smoke and no turbo noise if so equipped.

Squirrely cornering and crosswind sensitivity is bad rear links, unless
fixed expect to replace them and the rear subframe mounts along with
diff mounts. Check for rust in the ususal MB places. ACC repairs are
a pain on that car, as bad as the W124 chassis.

Excessive front tire wear is bad tie rod ends (usually on the outside),
replace drag link and damper at the same time. Ball joints are a
problem, cause creaks and groans on dips and when turning the wheels.

Peter

Re: [MBZ] can some one help on coolant in 190E

2007-05-28 Thread Peter Frederick

Coolant should be less than 75% glycol.

Did you purge all the air out when you filled it? The procedure I use
that works best is to squeeze the upper radiator hose flat, then crimp
the overflow line at the top of the radiator to the coolant tank shut
and release the upper radiator hose. This will pull coolant into the
block from the bottom. Release the crimp, squeeze the upper radiator
hose flat, and repeat until no more coolant drop occurs.

Get a coolant tester at the local McParts that has the four little
plastic balls in it. Suck up some coolant -- like all four will float
instantly. If they do, drain about a gallon of collant out of the rad
and add about that much water to the coolant tank. Run til the upper
radiator hose heat up (or drive it around the block) and test again --
you want three balls to float and the fourth one to swim, if I remember
correctly.

I would also replace the radiator cap and check the neck of the tank
for cracks -- overheating under stress (and intermittant coolant lever
lamp) can be due to lack of pressurization. Caps are cheap. If the
cap is bad, the coolant is boiling and getting forced out into the
overflow tank under the fender, but can be sucked back over if the cap
holds vac fairly well (different seal).

And the thermostat can indeed be bad, they are sometimes bad out of the
box.

Yes. Antifreeze is nowhere near as good at removing heat
as is water. Pure water has, however, its own problems!
The 50/50 mix is optimum, deviation either way buys various
problems.

The guy claims to have installed a keyless entry (remote) system. I
guess I
didn't know that these cars (1987) had electric locks. If not
electric, how

could a keyless entry be used?

It's easy. Everything since the 123 has had electric pumps on the
vacuum/pressure locks. Installation of keyless on them is nearly
trivial. See: http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/JSL2keyless.html
(For a 201 it'd all be under the back seat, but otherwise the same.)

The car reportedly has almost 250k mi. on it. Am I stupid for looking
into

this car with this many miles?

No. Just check it out. Chain and flex disk replacement are _good_
signs.

The M102 has a ratcheting tensioner. Likely it has been installed

Re: [MBZ] can some one help on coolant in 190E

2007-05-28 Thread Peter Frederick
The green stuff doesn't have sufficient anti-corrosive power to prevent
corrosion of the head and radiator (and heater core, too). Long term
use will result in clogged or leaking radiators (or both at once) and
severe enough corrosion of the head to blow the head gasket (happened
on my sister's Volvo -- naturally, on the highway at speed, cost them a
new rad and new head).

Even so, you must change it every two years for adequate protection.

HI all,

I replaced the radiator about 6 months ago (original radiator leaks after
13 yrs) with an OME radiator (costly but maybe it will last longer).
Then I filled it up with MB coolant (no mixing) and drove it. No problem
since then.

Couple of days ago, I decided to run it in the weather of '90sF and
distance is only 10 miles, it went hot and then the light for "low
coolant in radiator" shows up. Immediately, I opened the hood and let it
cool. Also, I check the hoses (top and bottom which returns to the
recovery tank) are hot. Next day, I opened the cap and see the coolant
level and is at max.

I started the engine and light is still on even though the ambient temp
in the garage is low ''70F. Coolant temp is zero at start up. I drove
it out in the temp of low '80sF for 7 miles and coolant temp is rising
from 0 to 80C and light is still on. About 5 mins later, coolant temp is
100C and on way back, I had to cool the engine by turning on the window
defroster to keep the engine temp at 90C. Otherwise it is at 100C or
more.

Thank you.

Howdy -
Proper mixture is 50:50 whether you mix it or it's premixed. Last time
I bought it from the MB dealer (Feb 06) it was concentrated and needed to
be mixed with H2O.

Antifreeze provides the best protection (to a lower temp) with 50% H2O
than as straight antifreeze. I believe the same is true for protection
against over-heating .
