Re: [MBZ] shift linkage
Right now I am counting the cash from selling car parts so that I can afford to have her towed to a shop. Actually, I am getting tools together to go to PnP in hopes of securing a few "spare" parts so that I can have them should I fail in getting the parts already on to stay unbusted. 220D manual with new bushings on the trans side of the shafts. I looked at the CD manual and no luck there, Chilton crap manual is even worse, so I am thumbing through the shop manuals to see what I have to do. Been having some morning rain, and the new creeper is MIA. The old creeper is KIA and gone. Getting my ducks lined up this time instead of forging ahead and busting it more. All came about with removing the arms from the shafts to insert new bushings. Mounted back in same place as I had marked prior to removal, but shafts got moved some way and at the shift knob H was half way back from center, but could wrestle it into gear. Next morning after some reading I got back under and removed arms from splined shaft on transmission and repositioned, and probably even more screwed up the shift knob positioning. Could not get into gear anymore at all, so went back under, held the knob end of the shafts at the Neutral position while reseating the arms on the splined shaft on the trans. All this with the car up in the air on ramps and jack stands so rear wheels would be able to spin. Started engine and released clutch, but the engine would die, as it seemed to engage the locked transmission. The drive shaft would not spin, but the rear wheels were free wheeling. Was able to get them to move under power when I rode the clutch and revved the engine. Re: [MBZ] [OT] tool quality.
I can say I've never purchased a tool from the US that I was unhappy with. Even the less expensive ones have served me well, with the exception of a pair of wire snips, but cutting through two live circuits will blow a hole in pretty much anything. :-) I have never purchased a tool made in Asia that equals those made in the US, and that's not to say I haven't paid good money for some. Many of the auto supply shops here that now sell Chinese made tools as their house brand are charging the same money as they did 4=5 years ago for the same US made tools. I still have all those original US tools, with LOTS of hours on them, but most of the Chinese tools have been returned atleast once or twice. I"m sure there are exceptions, but that's my experience. The only tools I've ever bought that were worse than Chinese tools were those that came with my Porsche and were made in Germany. Then again, Porsches never break, so maybe that was their little joke. Those Germany engineers can have a pretty dry sense of humor at times. hee hee. :-) Ed 300E 911SC On 17/07/07, Marshall Booth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Alex Chamberlain wrote: > > On 7/17/07, andrew strasfogel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >> While I do appreciate the finer tools, for my purposes a tool is > utilitarian > >> and nearly anything will do. > > > > But this is a false argument. The grey market GTV was wonderful to drive, especially fast when it was possible, and got 45 mpg at 75 mph with dual Webbers [when they were tuned correctly]. Yeah, if you know it to be 100% clean but if it is anything like mine then it is full of crap just waiting to blow out onto that freshly washed duco. That and blowing dust off the ground onto the freshly washed car. Like I said pure genius. On the rare occasion that my cars get a clean I use a chamois to get rid of the excess water. Hey -- wanted to thank you and others who nailed that problem with my son's SD -- he cleaned out the manifold connection, car running better but needs a bit more effort. Anyway, it was his first wrenching, and on his new ride, and it was quite satisfying for that to get resolved. Easy enough fix, not sure on the newer car how easy, but it should be tended to. --R Marshall Booth wrote: > There is almost surely turbo boost, but there is probably no correlated > fuel enrichment. Yes, you are. I love hearing the cardigan wearing, apple loving mob going on about how great their OS is. Surely it's the consistency and shape of the teeth, and in general the overall precision with which the interior of the wrench corresponds to the exterior of the nut, that determine the spread of the driving force across the flats and the stability (and thus resistance to rounding) of the wrench. In other words, if a wrench fits the nut snugly, it's less likely to slip, and a well-made wrench fits better. Re: [MBZ] [OT] US made tools.
not only is it stronger, but you can get the same strength with less material (weight) than no forged. That's why you can put a nice sticky tire on a forged rim and not yet, still keep the rim light. Probably have to pay a couple of thousand per rim, but quality doesn't come cheap. S&W had an ad compaign a few years back saying due to the quality of their forgings, they would make the frame of their .44s lighter, and yet as strong as other companies using less costly manufacturing techniques. BBS was also trying messing around with a new way to make rims a while back, that "vacuumed" the aluminum up into the mold instead of pouring. They said it was almost as strong as forging, if I remember correctly. Ed 300E On 17/07/07, Peter T. Re: [MBZ] wrenches.
All is well providing the tool is made so that it's flanks like up as they should with bolt head. I've put a cheap wrencho on a bolt before and it's had so much play, I keep checking to make srue I didn't grab a SAE by mistake when I wanted metric. oh yeah, and it was the right size. hee hee. That's a wrench you put aside for when you're working on one of those cars with both standards, and you can't figure out what the bolt is. With a wrench like that, and a little penetrating oil, atleast a couple of flanks are bound to grab somewhere on the bolt. hee hee. Ed 300E On 17/07/07, Peter T. Re: [MBZ] Drying cars.
A lot of the bike guys will dry their bikes with a leafblower, but if there is any sand or grit around, you're pretty much sandblasting it. :-) I like a couple of big beach towels best for drying the cars. I get them for about $10 each at Walmart (even made in Canada). Takes about 2 minutes for the whole car. I've read not to use a softener in the water when washing towels if you are going to use them on a car, but I could never figure out why? I find they pick up the water much better when soft, and softer can't be worse on the paint. Something in the softener that effects wax maybe?? I guess that is a design, sort of like a like a gentle tap on the shoulder that turns into a kick up the backside. Don't worry Alex, a few turns with that chinese wrench and the bolt will round off any of those high spots the wrench may have. :-) I think "forging" is defined differently around the world. Re: [MBZ] Way too much OT?
I think lists do become a bit of a social thing, which I think is fine. I mean, we are all here because we like or have a mercedes, most appreciate diesels, and we all pick up a wrench from time to time, so if the topic kind of wonders off to "what type of tools you like, or why you like them", not a really big deal to me. Again I think a common interest brought us together here. I belong to several car lists, and while it's nice to have people with similar interests under one roof, the fact is, any info you need to make a repair on any car is out there, without having to join a list. Most repairs I've done in the past I've done without the aid of a list. For me, if my time becomes so tight that hitting the delete button is too time consumnig, I probably would be messing around fixing my own cars and checking list anyway, I'd just take them in, or drive a Toyota. :-) Ed 300E On 17/07/07, Ed Booher <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > On 7/17/07, Walt Lasher <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Is there anyone who thinks there is way too much Off Topic > material > > here on the list? > > Maybe I'm an old stick in the mud, eh? > > > > Walt Lasher > > I've come to view it like this: A person joins the list, lurks a > little, asks a question, gets a fix, and then comes to the thought of > "X knew Y about Z, maybe they know R about Q as well" and instead of > venturing out to make new "friends" they use a list they have come to > be comfortable with and use it for more than it's original purpose. > > It's actually very intriguing to watch the social networking and > structuring that occurs between people here and the things they talk > about. > > Besides, we all know that if we kept to Mercedes *only* content, this > would be a very slow list. This whole community is geared toward more than just MB stuff. Yes, that is our main interest, but we have the OkieQ, and the RustyQ so people who have become friends on list can meet and greet in person. Pretty soon everyone gets to know more about everyone else attending these evens which leads to even more on list good converstion about things other than MB. Alan, My 240D has a copper washer. My 300D 2.5t seems to have no washer on the top of the fuel filter. Both have the O rings that come with the filter. I had to order some new copper washers from Rusty when we discovered that my brother's 240D had a rubber washed squeezed on the top by dumb PO. Torque on 240D is 20 ft pounds, 15 Nm. Having said that, I ran the 300D 2.5 out of fuel this weekend on the road and had to replace both filters-I only had an adjustable wrench (metric of course) and actually changed the filter canister and 'torqued' the top bolt with it-drove over 450 miles and no leak on a hand guess torque. Sorting by subject != grouping by thread. A good mail reader knows which messages are replies to which others, and when a thread goes off topic you can easily kill it and any further responses. You can in fact navigage subthreads within the same subject line. Gnus, a news and mail reader that runs in Emacs, is very good at this. It's what I use. But unless you are already a seasoned user of Emacs, you'd likely find it too arcane to bother with. I'm not familiar with what GMail does. Probably. The only problem would be hardware-specific drivers that might be different between the two. Then again, they are so similar to each other I suspect that the PPC kernels in OS X won't care. I learned not to do that way back in the early days of OS 9.x. There were a few updates that they put out that would break stuff. Ouch. I would say that their OS X updates are pretty bulletproof, but some of the app updates, like iTunes, can be hinky right out of the box. The issue with the EU is not Apple's, but the music industry's. The labels have different coontractual arrangements in different countries, which forces Apple to have different iTunes stores in each area that requires different terms for the labels and artists. This is the jist of the conflict going on in Denmark between their government and Apple. It's not an Apple issue - the record labels have to standardize their royalties and terms across the board. Re: [MBZ] Way too much OT?
I can see how that can be a pain. I've set up this gmail account and just have all my car stuff directed to it. I can go through it pretty fast and just delete the stuff of no interest. With my other mail programmes, it's easy to change the subject line, but I still haven't figured out how to do it yet with gmail? I think to the lack of tech stuff if partially due to the cars. There is a lot of chat about what oil to use, and filters, but other than that, or some pretty normal wear stuff, these cars tend to just keep going...just add gas. If more owned V12s with a couple of turbos added to boot, we'd probably all be spending more of our free time on our backs tinkering. :-) If you want a gmail account, I can send you an invite?? Lots of storage and you can get off digest mode if you're on it. I find it makes it much easier and fast to sort through stuff. Re: [MBZ] Lock Cylinder Removal - UPDATE
Dave, With the cylinder out, you can work the mechanism with a screwdriver or similar tool. Make sure the rest of the mechanism works smoothly before installing the new cylinder. I have had a very sticky mechanism that I fixed by squirting some lubricant in there with the cylinder removed, but that may be a bad idea in cold climates. Scott Ritchey -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dave Wakin Sent: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 14:15 To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Lock Cylinder Removal - UPDATE Went home for lunch in the 82 300SD and farted around with the e320 ignition again. I found a good picture of the removal tool I need (for around $90) on the internet, and after looking at it, decided I could make one. I stopped at the hardware store on the way, and bought a piece of brass sink drain pipe for $4 and some change to make it. The ignition cover is basically a circle with a flat spot the tool goes over, so I took a old PC peripheral blank cover (basically a piece of flat metal) and ground it a little narrower, bent it over itself on one end, and hooked it on the drain pipe. Used a clamp strap to secure it to the pipe, and put it to work. After a little adjusting, I got the ignition out! In my hands, it looks like all the pins work as they should. There is no way I would put it back in though, and for $100 Rusty can order me a new one keyed to my VIN. I'm cheap, but would rather my original keys work then save $55 for the other one he sells with random key. Looks like I'll drive the 'ol diesel for awhile until the new part arrives. [MBZ] my $50 lombard is now upgraded
256 meg ram, os 10.4.10, firewire. brilliant cosmetic condition. screen is like new. hard to calculate how much money i have in this, but i'd say it looks something like this. machine: $50 shipping machine from jersey: 15 firewire: $40 ram: surplus from baptist church buy last week (essentially free as the airport card is worth the $60 i paid for all the parts) hard drive: $70 (pulled out of my pismo, so i have to go to fry's now and get a replacement drive) so figure about $175 for a very very nice firewire equipped lombard. i think it should be adequate for my mom for email and websurfing, i'd think. the interesting thing is that the memory is marked 256 meg, but the machine only recognize 128 meg (exactly 1/2). i wonder if it only reads half the memory on the cards, so if a pismo can be upgraded to 1 meg, the lombard can only read that ram as 512 meg. and now you can tell me i'm an idiot as i could buy a brand new vista equipped acer laptop for 400 bucks. right kleb? ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I think the washer is aluminum but it's the same size as the copper washer on the oil plug. I once tried a copper washer but it didn't seal well ... I think the copper is too hard for the casting. In my 82 SD, I just torque the bolt a tiny bit at a time until the leak stops. My 79 300TD has a different hollow bolt with an extra O-ring that seems to prevent this leak in the first place. I wonder why they changed the design (probably to save cost). Re: [MBZ] Just saw this in Popular Machanics re: tires
Well, please do remember that there are pressure washers and then there are pressure washers. Most of the little ones will do no harm and may not even clean sufficiently to please you. The commercial ones may remove the paint from your car. I have one of the lesser models - 4HP B&S supposed to produce 1600# of pressure. Works OK but not likely to take the paint off. I would like to have a bigger and better one but likely would not use it to wash my car. I recall trying to clean grease off of an auto engine that I was rebuilding a few years ago. The pressure washer wasn't making much headway and I really wished I had more power to cut right through to the metal. I wouldn't have minded at all if it had removed the paint in that case. I also know someone who ran a mobile wash company for a while. They had pressure washers that used very hot water and some that mixed in sand like a sandblaster. Those would clean anything and were mostly used in messy commercial cleanups. [MBZ] leaking fuel filter
On Sunday I changed my in-line and spin-on fuel filters on the 300D, and today when I approached the car I detected the aroma of -- no, not soybean oil or rancid french fries -- Diesel fuel. Checking the filters, there was fuel seeping out around the big center bolt on the spin-on filter. I tightened it a bit more, and will keep an eye on it. Is there any gasket or washer there that should be replaced as part of the filter change? There were none in the box with the new filter. There has been a lot. I think it adds a dimension of getting to "know" people, as much as that's possible over email, but see how it could be annoying to someone on Digest mode or only checking periodically. If you have an email reader that can group messages by thread it's pretty easy to kill threads that are not interesting or have wandered off topic. But not all email readers do that well.
