[MBZ] the practice of deceptive cluster switching

2007-07-31 Thread Zoltan Finks
How common do y'all think it is for the gauge cluster to be switched
out in order to show a lower mileage on a vehicle?

When I was getting a ride from the airport by the seller of my 190D
recently, I told him of my 240D and its 121k mi. when I bought it. I
mentioned that the engine went belly-up and the other problems it had,
and his response was to question if it really had 121k, and to suggest
that often the clusters are switched out to show untrue mileage.

Made me wonder, as the wear on the suspension, and the cracked open CV
boots seem to show lots of use. Then again, these are both symptoms of
hot, dry desert living, no - the cracking of rubber bits?

Could be. I know the early 126s have the type that unclip inside the

I've seen a lot of it here in Alabama, so much that I ignore the odometer
just look at the condition of the car.

I've swapped out quite a few due to failed odometers I wonder if this is
the case of most swap-outs?

Unlike the NE, where cars quietly rust away, we drive the wheels off here in
the South. My Brother In-law's 98 Dodge truck is running its third engine,
second transmission and second rear end. And no, there's nothing wrong with
the truck - it has well over 400,000 miles on the clock and the body
interior still look new.

How common do y'all think it is for the gauge cluster to be switched
out in order to show a lower mileage on a vehicle?

Probably more are due to swap-outs due to failure than fraud,
but I'm sure that happens too. When I repaired the Chicken
Wagon's odometer it was quite apparent that I could set any
mileage I wanted. (Which I did, putting on a hundred-odd to
try to make it as accurate as I could.) In fact, the temptation
was there to roll on an extra 100k or so just so I could have
bragging rights! (The car _looks_ like it could pass it off.)

Condition, condition, condition.

turn it to the position where the grooves line up and stick a

releases the cylinder and allows it to be separated from the

an analysis of doctored service records showed it was in reality more like
120 k. Fittingly, I had a series of mechanical failures in the year that I
drove this car, including the AC pulley, vacuum pump, and numerous front end
noise and suspension issues.

Re: [MBZ] the practice of deceptive cluster switching

2007-07-31 Thread Redghost
It could happen. The change out is not that hard with all the
electronics, where the older mechanical sensors involve more rooting
around at the source to make a complete swap. On Gump, I just
swapped out the old 115 speedo for a more functional one from a
280c. Would have had to tear the whole cluster apart to fit the oil
and temp gauge into a new cluster without going all the way to the
engine to feed hoses back.

I've heard that odometer tampering is very common in the lower tiers
of the used car marketplace. Probably less likely if you're buying
direct from a private owner, but not beyond possibility.

John, the only rust on my '81 300SD was under the rear windshield. I found
it when replacing both windshields, and the rear one could not be
reinstalled until it was rebuilt. The shop had to cut out and rebuild at
least half of the lower shelf. Much worse than yours shows, but no doubt an
easier spot to work. It was done well [but not show quality] and the cost
was about $400. Decent body shop was $37.50 an hour.

I've got a little bit of rust near the top of the windshield. It doesn't
look like much, but I'm sure its horrible underneath the windshield seal.
Either the rust or a bad seal is causing a *lot* of wind noise and even some
water to leak in from that area. I was quoted just under $1000 for this
repair (and thats if they can re-use the windshield! Add another 200 for a
PPG replacement). The biggest cost was nearly 12 hours of labor for body
work, and another 10 hours for paint prep and painting.

Unfortunately I think this is in-line for a quality repair... what do you
guys think? I'm going to get another quote tomorrow I think.

See attached for pictures of the rust.

Sounds about right to me just given the numbers. Maybe $300 for parts

$30/hr? But why so much labor---are they planning to strip all the

[MBZ] Lock cylinder RE: Mercedes Digest, Vol 20, Issue 166

2007-07-31 Thread Robert Bigham
Hello Alex

I don't know about the 124, but I have been in the same place as
you with my 123.

Here's the story on 123. Perhaps it will be of some help.

With the cylinder turned and the pin in the hole (depressing another pin),
the black surround around the cylinder, which is threaded onto the actual
ignition switch body, can be unscrewed. Turn it counterclockwise. There
is a tool for fhis, but strong fingers can get it started, and after that
it's easy.

I thought the pin would magically release the lock cylinder. It will on
Fords
and GM, but Mercedes is engineereed like no other car, and all the pin does
is make it possible to get the cylinder out. If it's made like 123, once
you get
it out you will see why and how.

And oh, BTW, it's no picnic to put the new cylinder in, but you can do it.
Good
luck.

Just got my replacement ignition lock cylinder for my 124. I
thought looking at it would make it obvious how to release the old one
(which I have not yet been able to do). It doesn't. I see how to
turn it to the position where the grooves line up and stick a
paperclip in to trigger the catch, but I can't see how that magically
releases the cylinder and allows it to be separated from the
 surrounding part. Any tips?

No luck doing this so far. It feels like my paperclip is depressing
the pin like it should, but nothing wants to move. Could the black

badly with water pump pliers, so I'm afraid to manhandle it any

the pin in there in the correct place seems to take more fingers than

[MBZ] glow plug fuse

2007-07-31 Thread Rich Thomas
Brunnhilda lost her glow, I went to the Benz dealer today to get one (it
is close by, I needed it now) and they charged me $3.90. It took the
parts guy (in a nice suit) about 10 min to figure out what it was called
(a lock fuse or something like that), then I had to stand behind all
the swells getting their new rides serviced (one of whom was quite
pleasant to stand behind, nudge nudge wink wink, say no more). I said
to the checkout woman I bet that was the cheapest thing they had sold
all day, and she laughed and said, yeah fer sure. Daughter unit wanted
the new black SLK55 sitting there, but I steered her to the R500, marked
down from 56950 to 49950! Their prices are INSANE!!!

Yes, I know I should have a spare, should have checked it, blah blah.

Re: [MBZ] the practice of deceptive cluster switching

2007-07-31 Thread Tom Hargrave
You have to be careful whan judging a car. Some things wear with time
while other things wear with use. Rubber plastic parts tend to
deteriorate with time. Also, the Southern sun heat can be very brutal
to the inside of a car. I've seen Mercedes with verified low miles thar
had a cracked dash had the stuffing coming out of the seats the
seats were colapsing.

I always look over the interior but then I pay close attention to the
brake pad tightness of the steering. I'll also look at the condition
of the tie-rod end ball joint seals if it's supposed to be a low
mileage car.

You can usually tell if the mileage is somewhat accurate. If it shows
low miles but is really trashed, seats worn etc, chances are it really
has more miles.

Made me wonder, as the wear on the suspension, and the cracked open CV

 Hello Mike

My Mercedes Technical Data Passenger Cars says it depends
on which Model you have. Is it 123.190 0r 123.193 or what?

Given Model 123.xxx I can tell you what the book says.

No guarantees the ring and pinion haven't been changed.

HiAs I had mentioned earlier, I DID get all the New parts from Rusty
and they arrived promptly in two shipments. I Never have a problem there
ordering parts , shipment, or Billing.

Now For my 300sel 3,5 I also needed small bits of trim ,knobs etc. My
very first sourcing inquiry was to You, but you were unable to assist
with anything for the W.109
.
Using the internet ' parts locator ' I was given this and another other
address carrying the required parts. They replied promptly and mentioned
availability of two complete cars available for parts hence my order.

Do a Google search for their website EAP PARTS .LLC .it will turn out
very interesting. You could have easily ordered from them too just like the
others who have been conned . Do read the web report.

Hmmm, maybe both. Nice as the SLK was, I don't think I could ooze into
it. The SL550 next to it however

We had a bit of fun there, daughter and I. I was dressed in my
woodworking outfit, kinda grubby looking, she was whining that Daddy I
RLLY need the SLK to take to school with me. I say, But it
won't be any good in the snow if you get any. I know, that's why I
NED the G55 too! I'll put the SLK in the garage for winter and
drive the G. Well, I think you have enough headroom on your Amex,
just go over there and tell them you want them both, we can come back
later and deal with the paperwork. So she perks up and says OK!
and wanders off, while the swells were casting sideways glances at her...

Too funny.

YMMV, but I never price-compare based on rebates. At least half the
time I never receive them, and the terms and conditions of the rebate
offer leave you little recourse if you don't.

Worse, more and more in the fine print you discover that the rebate

[MBZ] Need Manual trans fast

2007-07-31 Thread Redghost
Seems I killed it. The trans in Gump is truly boogered. Shop wants
to tear it down and rebuild since both reverse and at least one other
gear are engaged.

Now I am trolling CL looking for donor cars so that I can just take
the old one out and have the working one installed. Then on my own
time I can rebuild the one I screwed up. Great learning experience
for me and the boy.

Also learned to not be so gung ho about working on stuff I fail to
RTFM before jumping in. It is the small repairs that have resulted
in the biggest bills to defornicate.

Might be due to not living here and needing the parts to ship to over

They were $19.94 ea.

I was looking at the truck and SUV oil, which I though was mentioned on

[MBZ] Window shopping

2007-07-31 Thread E M
Had to go and pick up come computer stuff today, and the dealer is right
next door. I always go and have a little look around. Large number of cars
on the used lot. The had a G wagon done to AMG spec. I'm not a real SUV
type person, but I've always like this one. To me it's a truck with grunt.
Never really got the idea behind such things as Cayennes. I've been around
them, and even had some hot laps in a twin turbo one, but I keep asking
myself, It's fine and all, but why?

Had a look around the service department. Cleaner than some hospitals I've
seen. Everything is done in a nice calm pace. Well, I guess at $120 per
hour, why rush it, hee hee. Seem all the dealers, including porsche now
offer these bar type areas where you can relax, have a cofffee or espresso
and what whatever you're interested in while waiting to get screwed by the
service manager. :-) I think they like you nice and relaxed to soften you
up for the shock when they hand you the bill. Still, they have created
such a nice enviornment, you almost buy into it. Inside the large service
area, they have a section that is glassed off, where the floor is tiles and
all the tools are for that area only. This is where the Maybach's are
serviced. It's about the size of a good size double garage, with a full
counter area where the tech can do his reading up on whatever service is
required. They also service the SLRs there. While I was there, they had a
722 or is it 733 version. That is the slightly pumped up version just
incase the standard SLR leaves you a little wanting.

Outside, they had several new S Classes as well as New CL coupes. The coupe
looks much nicer in the flesh, er, metal than in pics.

I must remember to buy a lotto ticket tomorrow. :-)

Perhaps the application of horsepower (and burning clutch) jammed it so hard you
can't get the syncros to slide apart?
I'd be tempted to try to turn the engine backwards a bit and see if it
decreased the pressure on the gears enough to get reverse disengaged.
(for example, if you can turn the engine 10 degrees, turn it five degrees
so there's equal slop in both directions.)

In the beginning, there was Delvac One.

Then to stop the fools from putting it in their gasser trucks, they came
out with the xW30 TruckSUV (don't ask me how it's different from regular

The problem is that they sell the TDT for over $5.50 a qt. There were

$22-23 here.(major metro Walmarts often undercut my local store,

Typical attitude of so-called professionals who are afraid of losing
their livelihood if the truth got out that their jobs don't involve
much that an ordinary person can't do with a little practice and the
right reference materials. I find it annoyingly common among lawyers,
