has locked up again, which makes me think that the steering wheel lock
is at fault. Has anyone fixed one of these? I was told to oil it
with the cylinder out but if something is really wrong with the lock
that would only be a temporary fix. (I did spray some WD40 in, didn't
work) What do I try next? Any ideas? (key cylinder is now out)
Thank you,

John,

Did you pull really hard left and right on the steering wheel while trying
to release the ignition lock? If your front wheels are up against a curb you
may even have to jack the car up to take the pressure off the steering so the
lock can release.

Well, as long as the term is not used in a sexual manner, but as a
descriptive, it should pass the censors. At least that is how one
can use the common term for fornication (once) and still retain a PG
rating for a movie in the good ole USA.

Heaven forbid we should acknowledge our baser nature, but feel free
to blow the feces out of anybody or thing. That is just good fun,
where procreation is sacred. Except for those in religious orders,
then it is fun, and a sin.

Brian,

JUST REPLACE IT. Not worth the $400 to open it up and see if you can
squeeze a few thousand more miles out. I had an acura that said to
change the belt at 90k. It was not joking. I made it to 91,231
before the belt let loose and I was in it for $2500 to rebuild the
top end. Valves slapped all over the place. Should have just gone
in and paid my $400 for the belt right at 90k

[MBZ] Subject: OT: Motorcycle electrics

2007-08-17 Thread Michael C Boerner
Curt,
Never seen the alternator on a motorcycle, but a stator should be a stator.
It's just a stationary winding, connected to the battery (via a
rectifier/diode in your case), that has current induced in it by the
magnetic field produced by the energized (via brushes) rotor. Bad, short,
worn, shorted, burnt or disconnected (from battery power) brushes mean that
no energy gets to the rotor, which is then unable to induce current in the
stator windings to charge the battery. Replacing brushes should fix it,
unless you've fried, shorted or damaged the stator windings. I'd start with
brushes. If that doesn't get it, you need better troubleshooting procedures
and understanding of the charging system (alternator/generator/magneto)
before throwing money at the problem. I'm sure a stator somewhere,
sometime, has gone open, and that one has also shorted out, but I'm pretty
sure either of those failures is a rarity. Brushes and bearings wear out,
diodes fail (making some noise), and regulators burn up, but rotor and
stator windings take some serious effort and abuse to kill. Good luck

Re: [MBZ] Jacking vehicle up to change ATF filter

2007-08-17 Thread Zoltan Finks
Wow. I didn't think it was that uncommon to lie underneath a vehicle
whilst it is jacked up and jack-standed. I spent much of my teen years
doing that. And in the desert on the ground at night it was
particularly unnerving to become aware of a Tarantula crawling toward
you under the car. Your head kinda bounces between the undercarriage
and the ground a few times before you drag yourself out from
underneath the car.

Then it's time for the either the WD40 or the carb cleaner and a lighter. Poof.

I could use dynamite out here - but while it wouldn't attract
any attention, it _would_ make a bigger mess than the woodchuck
is making!

Re: [MBZ] [way off topic]now handguns & the law & the freaks wholove guns

2007-08-17 Thread Wonko the Sane
My only serious comment in this discussion. I haveguns by proxy, and they
are in the possession of our town's law enforcement officers. Some, such as
Kleb, live where it might take law enforcement a hour to respond (he lives
way out in the sticks). For me, and this is not a guess but from
observation, there is normally less than 90 seconds between a 911 call on
the radio to the officers being on-scene. (I have a scanner because of my
job.)

I live in a small town. At full throttle, the cops could go from end to end
in about five minutes. I feel protected. We have very few drug crazed
crazies out wandering the neighborhood -- in fact, 99% of them are on my
case load at work!

For those of you who feel you must pack heat to get thru the day, I have but
two things to say:

1. Practice gun safety.

2. Freekin' move! Whatever it is you do for a living, you can do it in a
safer environment.

I read a book about those A-10s. Seem the airframe was built

So it would probably be to big.

Unless you have a new Sprinter van...

But are we allowed to discuss the p thingy and the various sizes thereof?
Another related question, do they make genuine gun racks for Mercs. I
reckon that would be way cool a T with a gun rack.
I have noticed that the gloveboxes on Mercs seem to be too small to hold
a real handgun, what is the solution there?
However the sunroofs are a nice size and just the go for that drive by
shooting or hunting in the national park.

acceptable...but, this has gone on for far too long, and with way too much
digression. There are probably five or six different threads going now

back to some semblance of on-topic discussion. Please do it, for the good

Re: [MBZ] Was Virtual Pillory now guns and the law

2007-08-17 Thread archer
Tampa (and Florida) seem to be the southern home of freakdom. Last weekend
there was a freaks convention there:

"CONVENTION A PLACE TO FEEL AT HOME WITH FETISH
Fans, usually well-off professionals, spend big bucks on leather, latex,
fishnets and fantasies.
When a bearded man in his 50s walks by wearing purple tights and high heels,
you know you're not at a mortgage brokers' convention.
It started Friday and continues all weekend. It's expected to draw maybe
2,500 people, most of them Floridians with fat wallets.
Held annually in Tampa for four years now, it's basically a social event and
sexed-up trade show aimed at a very specific market.
There are big bucks in this particular slice of subculture. The outfits and
gear are pricey. The consumers tend to be well-heeled professionals who are
fiercely devoted to their kink.
"It is the great secret of the suburbs. The perception is that it's the
fringe people. But it's the well-to-do, the upper middle class, who can
afford to have that fantasy playroom in the extra basement room or the
locked study," said a woman who goes by the name Midori.
People dress as horses. People lead each other around on leashes.
The convention is at the Hyatt Regency Tampa. FetishCon draws enthusiasts
from all over the world, from as far away as Russia and Japan, although
convention organizers say most are from Floridasnip
For the whole article go to: www.sptimes.com and type Mike Brassfield in
"search"
..
A friend who drove by during last years convention said there were dozens of
Mercedes in the parking lot. (grin)

I disagree, Kevin. We've had complaints about extended oil threads,
political threads, etc. ... And last time I checked, "penis" was a valid
dictionary word.

But perhaps I am going off half-cocked.

As for "the bigger your gun the smaller your penis" thing -- sort of
parallels the guys who buy an Hummer.

But then again, I own a 240D.

Forgot to mention the good side of this. Previously if I rode the bike in the

Love the midwest. Prior to here, I was (working in reverse order) Jax FL,
DC, NYC, Boston.

My house is double Donald's and a triple lot, four car garage. $74K. So safe
we can go to work and leave the keys in the ignition (downtown Jefferson).

But, unless you are a doctor or an attorney (are you listening, Donald?) you
max out at $13/$15 an hour as management.

Attorneys here have it good. High percentage of population is 70+ and need
an attorney to do the probate. Good news: the attorneys only wear a tie when
going to court (limited to one day a week by calendar).

[MBZ] OT: Motorcycle electrics

2007-08-17 Thread Curt Raymond
My Honda CB900f quit charging the battery. Thank goodness for a volt meter or I
could have found myself out of luck somewhere...
Anyway my Haynes book has a pretty good proceedure for testing the
rectifier/regulator which seems to test out good (very high resistance one way,
very low the other). So I opened up the stator and find the brushes one of
which seems very worn. With luck I'll head to the hardware store tomorrow and
find a perfect replacement that'll fix everything. Otherwise I guess I'll order
a new stator.
It's been suggested by somebody I somewhat trust (he's got a really nice shop
and seems to know what he's talking about, and he's not trying to sell me
anything) that I replace the rectifier/regulator at the same time.
Together they're about $250, the stator is $93 I think alone.
I'm thinking that the rectifier/regulator is easy enough to replace I might
wait but then I'm a bit paranoid that if the 25 year old diodes give up the
ghost it might fry the new stator.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Thanks

After all what offends you may have some else laughing. That is the
nature of humor, attempted or otherwise.
And no I am not going to apologize, I did not aim that cheap shot (pun

I am not going to go into the whole Freudian thing but it is a well
documented fact that men compensate for their imagined lack of manhood.
Some invade Poland, some buy sports cars and some do supposedly macho
things like collecting and using powerful firearms.
I was going to go in further detail but it seems I am not allowed to use
words like pe**s or heavens forbid should I use the v word. You know
that dictionary is full of sinful words, how did it ever get past the

Anyway it just goes to prove what a sexual intercoursed up world we live
in, talk about guns and shooting things all you like but mention the
human reproductive organs and you'll go straight to hell.

I had an offer in Idaho once and seriously considered it Boisie is a nice town.
I might consider the bay area too but it'd have to be a big money job, thats a

Having been born and raised in the Midwest, I can say
that without living there it's tough to grasp the
attraction. Suffice to say there is a "quality of
life" component that can't be explained, only
experienced.

I would consider going back to Wisconsin, but other
than that if I ever move it's going to be out west
somewhere.

I disagree, Kevin. We've had complaints about extended oil threads,
political threads, etc. ... And last time I checked, "penis" was a valid
dictionary word.

But perhaps I am going off half-cocked.

As for "the bigger your gun the smaller your penis" thing -- sort of
parallels the guys who buy an Hummer.

But then again, I own a 240D.

2007-08-17 Thread Kevin
[intolerant commentary deleted]

Correct, just because something left the factory rated that way doesn't
mean environmental conditions haven't weakened it. Also keep in mind that
the smaller jackstands can shift and move. Make sure they are all level, and
make sure they are in good condition before proceeding underneath.

Lifted 4x4 300TDs are fine to crawl underneath, but if a 300SD comes off a
jackstand on you, you are GOING to have a bad day. Also wise to make sure
you have someone that can hear you scream in case it falls on you, provided
you survive the initial THWACK.

Some do, some don't. Some Hondas use a belt, some are chain.
Yours seems to be a belt, and according to
http://www.samarins.com/reviews/cr-v.html
the interval is 105k. Check in your owner's manual or with your dealer.
02+ crv's are supposedly chain drive (from the same source).

A 91 jetta has an inspection cover, leave it to Ze Germans to think of
everything.

Yes. And generally, they are interference engines, which makes the cost
of paying a shop $400 to swap the belt really nothing.

(Yes, I know some belt engines aren't interference, like a mercury lynx for
example.)

Also some of those v8s (like 380SL/SE/SEL) can have single row timing
chains that aren't known for just stretching - they can jump time and
cause as many problems as a shredded belt.

Not really, they are safety rated but if they have gone rusty..
Anyway, a while back I bought a pair of 5 tonne rated stands and they
are the ducks guts when compared to the pissy cheaper stands that I used

On the cheaper ones the car can be rocked a little bit but the car is
solid as rock on the 5 tonne ones.
However all this talk about axle stands is distracting the gun crowd
from their little discussion.

It's one thing to say "this is OT, can we take it elsewhere". It's

[MBZ] OT Honda Timing Belt

2007-08-17 Thread Zoltan Finks
The wife has a good question about our 2000 CRV that has just over 100,000 mi.:

She says that Hondas need timing belts replaced at about 80k mi. Is
there a way to know if it needs replacing without opening up the
engine?

And

I know that on old V8 engines with timing chains the engine starts
acting up when the chain is getting to be stretched. But with belts,
do they just up and break one day without warning?

Or he could get some more axle stands and lift the whole car to check
everything. I am assuming that axle stands will be used and not some
dodgy method.
How much are axle stands these days? Not bloody much when compared to
the cost of your medical system over there.

With a little more RAM, that will run OS X quite handily for casual
use. My day-to-day machine for web surfing, email, and a little
Photoshop is a G4/1.2 Ghz with 1.5 Gb. See no need to replace it yet

Okay, here's one of my famous basic questions:

Since I only really have the ability to jack up one end of the
vehicle, am I better off - in terms of maximum ATF drainage - jacking
up the front, or the rear of the vehicle? I'm assuming the rear is the
answer, but doesn't hurt to ask.

Talking about the 87 190D.

Also, yes, I was referring to doing a filter change. I just didn't
know if - with pan removed - more fluid would be allowed to drain from

Since you have to remove the pan to change the filter (the filter really
MUST be changed with the ATF change) it doesn't matter, but the drain
plug is at the back and so I'd jack up the front of the car.

If you jack up the rear you can check the differential oil level while
you're at it. (Always more pleasant when the fill hole is higher than
normal, so that it doesn't dribble all over as you remove the plug
[Actually I learned this lesson not from any Benzes but from my
Trooper (with four fill plugs to worry about on the bottom)]).

It doesn't matter, as you're dropping the pan, so the
angle won't matter.

Same with the torque converter.

To isolate the noise maybe remove the belt(s) and see if the noise goes

A slug is even better but the shotgun itself does not work so well in the
home. It's too long, bangs into things & can't be brought up or pointed as
fast as a handgun.

Re: [MBZ] handguns & the law

2007-08-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
The real issue today is misused drugs, which drive people to do incredibly
stupid things like steal my Harley Davidson Softtail. Two thieves were
backing the bike out of the garage when they were interrupted by my Wife.

And now here's the good part - They had no way of transporting the bike! And
how far do you suppose they would have been able to push a 750 pound
motorcycle???

"Stupid crack head" is more than just a slang phrase, it's a very accurate
description of a part of our society. At least I was not home when they
tried. If I were then they might have gotten blood on my motorcycle.

Whatever it was, it seemed to have left, quickly and quietly.

There was another time, I was about 14, my older brother and his girlfriend
were visiting from Virginia and sleeping downstairs in the family room.
They heard two guys talking outside. Five minutes later, father, myself,
brother, three shotguns and two dogs were out in the yard investigating.
Thought we heard somebody fleeing through the woods out back, but didn't
try to chase them.

My family lived in that house for 12 years, and it was never broken into.
One time the tax assessor paid a surprise visit when nobody was home.
When he scheduled a visit the next week, he wanted to know where the dog
was that we kept in the garage. He asked this question while an 85lb GSP
was sniffing his tires. When we told him we only had the one dog, I thought
for a minute he was going to climb on top of his truck. He said that when
he came the first time, the dog was trying to come through the 16x8' garage
door, and it was bowing out about a foot in the center. "Good boy!" was my
first thought.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] Speedo accuracy

If you have one of the newer eTrex Vista Cxs, the
adapters are hard to find - I had the same problem. I
also roasted my first one with a non-OEM adapter,
which Garmin gladly replaced, despite my truthfulness
in telling them what I was using.

Apparently there was an issue with a protection diode
whose blocking voltage wasn't high enough, and if you
unplugged the unit while it was powered up by an
external source, the spike could roast (short) the
diode.

They sent me a replacement within the week, and I
bought an OEM car adapter at the same time. Haven't
had a problem since.

I really like my eTrex, ,especially for hiking, which
is what I bought it for. I only wish I didn't have to
put my glasses on to read the screen...

Re: [MBZ] Name my Sprinter (was Re: I've gone and done it)

2007-08-17 Thread LWB250
I bought a 1962 300SE from the estate of a retired
nuclear physicist from Berkeley. It had been in
storage in Colma, CA (the "city of the dead," if you
know the area) for a number of years, and when I got
to it the windows and glass had all been smashed out
of it due to vandals that had broken in to the
warehouse where it was stored.

The attorney for the estate told the family it was a
total loss, mainly because he call the local
$tealership and got prices on the glass.

I named it "Oppenheimer," mainly because I like the
guy and I thought it was appropriate, considering the
car's history. It was the only car he ever
owned/drove, and he only drove it on weekends,
preferring to use the bus to get to/from campus. I
met his daughter when I had it and she told me about
how anal the guy was about the car - she couldn't eve
roll down a window - he had to do it.

Heh.

I bought it for a song, called a glass guy in Redwood
City, whose dad just happened to have a plain Jane
230S that had been languishing next to the house in
Woodside. Bought the 230S for pocket change and
swapped all the glass out (it's the exact same glass
as the 300SE) along with anything else I could strip
off of it that would fit the 300SE.

Had it trucked out here (Florida) and drove it for a
year until a guy in Colorado that had been bugging me
to sell it to him finally ponied up. I got tired of
his calls, so one day when he called me I told him,
"It's yours for $8k," thinking that would be the end
of him.

Two days later I had a cashier's check from him in
FedEx. His brother, who lived in Orlando, picked it
up from me then drove it out to Colorado.

This story gets even weirder

I just heard from him earlier this year. He took it
to "some shop in Denver that's supposed to be the best
indy around" (yes, Ritter's place) and had the engine
rebuilt! (This is an M180, which would cost a small
fortune to rebuild if the parts can be had at all.)
The body and interior are all being redone as well.

Should be a nice car when he's done, but he'll have a
fortune in it.

Only air suspension Benz I ever owned, and it was a
blast to drive. I love the Finnies and would love to
have another, but not a 300SE - that M180 scared the
heck out of me on the parts prices.

Only used Benz I ever made money on, if you don't
factor use into the equation.
