Re: [MBZ] OT: Chickens

2008-02-14 Thread Zoltan Finks
This is more informative than you know.
No, I haven't interacted with a chicken. And I suppose my gauge of whether I
care about an animal's plight is how capable it is of suffering (at least as
we know it).

So if the chicken is a pretty mindless grunt creature then I feel less
sympathy toward them and the handling they receive in order to fuel
society's immense hunger for them.

I see it like this: There has to be a line somewhere. It's different for
each of us. Some folks are all broken up about the plight of every living
creature except, let's say, spiders. Or maybe they feel sympathy for
spiders, but not so much fleas and gnats. Or maybe they feel sympathy toward
gnats but not so much for, I don't know, slugs, or tadpoles, or germs or
something.

So it's hypocritical for people to express sympathy for slaughtered chickens
but not for the mosquito they swat off their arm.

For me: I guess I draw the line where the animal actually suffers. But how
do we really know if an animal suffers? We do not. So I figure let's use as
needed, but husband as best we can, the animals we've been given.

Truth told, I am not convinced that even dogs have feelings. Sure, they
exhibit signs that suggest they feel, but we don't know what those signs
really mean. They could simply be outward behaviors developed over the
centuries in order to elicit fortuitous responses from humans. This supports
survival. So when Rover gives you puppy dog eyes, you give him your pizza
crust. And when Fuzzy cowers when you come home and she's chewed your shoes,
you have increased sympathy on her.

Part of the Canadian Auto Show is taking place in my hotel. Its been kind of

Re: [MBZ] WAY OT (sorry): 2 year old neutered male Siberian Husky looking for good home

2008-02-14 Thread Christopher McCann
Yes, they shed alot...part of being a giant fluffy thing. There is a Husky
Rescue in St. Louis, I think, but I have yet to mention in the Church bulletin,
so that is the next step.

BTW, Anke attacked Nanook again on Tuesday night. He doesn't defend himself,
just cowers and makes that Husky scream, which I think convinces the Shepherds
that he is an alien and makes the situation escalate.

Thanks for the best wishes

Chris

Zoltan Finks [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: BTW Christopher, wish you success with

My wife and I each have a dog - my Doberman and her Husky. It's not in the
cards for us to get another one - two is enough. Especially when you
consider that the wife travels, and I am required by my wedding vows to
travel at least once or twice a year.

And I have gotten her, without much arm twisting, to agree never to get a
Husky again. The hair buildup in the house is constant. A major thorn in our
sides.

I would find the number to Husky rescue groups around your location. If they
have capacity they should take him. But be prepared for a possible lecture
from a zealot.

'84 300D - beautiful - got an IP for $5.00 from the PNP and it runs great.
Not much left to do on that one.

 '85 300D Cali - runs great, doesn't need much BUT our friend's 240D got
hit and he's giving us the insurance money to fix it, so we are gonna
cannibilize parts off this car. Also found a beautiful (no rust) 300D with
shot tranny for $250 - we're taking the tranny out of this car to put in
that one. Kind of a shame to use a perfectly good car as a parts car but
123's are non-existant ant PNPs around here - 300SD are EVERYWHERE (kind of
sad)...and we only paid $450 for this one.

'76 240D - haven't touched it. Runs, but needs some body work and that
 will wait till summer.

Nothing sold yet, but we're slowly getting there. All parts from PNP so
 costs are pretty minimal.

See it both ways but mostly clockwise unless you overide natural instincts.

If you see this lady turning clockwise you are using your right brain.
If you see it the other way, you are using left brain.
Some people do see both ways, but most people see it only one way.

If you try to see it the other way and if you do see, your IQ is above 160
which is almost a genius.
Then see if you can make her go one way and then the other by shifting the
brain's current.
BOTH DIRECTIONS CAN BE SEEN
This was proved at Yale University, over a 5 year study on the human brain
and it's functions. Only 14% of the US population can see her move both ways.

This is quite amazing ..

Unfortunately, that and a couple of bucks will still be needed in order for you

Re: [MBZ] Pardon the OT - heard of this employment website - scamor no

2008-02-14 Thread LarryT
you wrote a scam to get your identity,

You are wise to be cautious. Collecting Resume's is now being used to steal
identities by criminals. Somepeople put an incredible amount of info on
their resumes when it is better to only provide enough to get the employer
to
call and schedule an interview. I rememeber seeing all kinds of stuff on
Resumes - even SS #'s! I guess they
wanted us to be able to begin processing their employment without delay!

Anyway, put the job you're interested in and the part of your background
that would qualify you for that job and suggest an interview but number of
kids, etc is not needed.

There's *bad* people out there -

Oh come on, quit fretting. It has every indication of being either a
scam to get your identity, or at best a pretty superficial job posting

established legit sites like Monster or CareerBuilder. Though even

On my 111 coupe the new headliner involved removing front and rear glass

[MBZ] bumper rubber, W123

2008-02-14 Thread Allan Streib
I've had continuing problems with the bumper rubber coming loose from
the bumper. What happens is that the hooks on the plastic backing
strip disengage from the slots in the bumper itself.

Recently my front bumper strip came off completely. It's in the trunk
right now. The back bumper strip is loose on one hook right now.

Someone posted about using some screws or something to hold it on --
can anyone provide details on exactly how to reattach it securely?

Not sure about feelings but they certainly feel pain.

On Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 3:42 AM, Zoltan Finks [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:

This is more informative than you know.
No, I haven't interacted with a chicken. And I suppose my gauge of whether
 I
care about an animal's plight is how capable it is of suffering (at least
 as
 we know it).

Or maybe they feel sympathy
 toward
gnats but not so much for, I don't know, slugs, or tadpoles, or germs or
 something.

So it's hypocritical for people to express sympathy for slaughtered
 chickens
but not for the mosquito they swat off their arm.

For me: I guess I draw the line where the animal actually suffers. But how
do we really know if an animal suffers? We do not. So I figure let's use
 as
needed, but husband as best we can, the animals we've been given.

Truth told, I am not convinced that even dogs have feelings. Sure, they
exhibit signs that suggest they feel, but we don't know what those signs
really mean. They could simply be outward behaviors developed over the
centuries in order to elicit fortuitous responses from humans. This
 supports
survival. So when Rover gives you puppy dog eyes, you give him your pizza
crust. And when Fuzzy cowers when you come home and she's chewed your
 shoes,
you have increased sympathy on her.

That depends on whether you came from a car-centric situation or not.
My hypothesis is that those who have no car-centric history from a young
age are generally clueless once they get their licenses (or not, but
that is another discussion) since they do not have a sixth sense of
stuff going on around them on the roads. Here in Houston we have lots
of those kind of drivers.

A friend's wife, who grew up in New York City, had very minimal
experience in a car other than an occasional taxi -- took the
bus/subway/taxi everywhere or walked. After she got her Ph.D. from
Harvard/MIT (she is not your average inconsiderate dumbass, though the
correlation between the two aspects might not be a good one) she decided
she needed to learn to drive. She is the first to admit she is an
absolutely terrible driver, and has zero sense of what being in a car is
about though she makes an effort. She minimizes driving, just to/from
work mostly, and does not like it at all.

YMMV

Having been exposed to a LOT of really bad drivers, up around Boston

be prepared) to Houston (where the stupidity is just absolutely totally

2008-02-14 Thread Zoltan Finks
Well that's sort of the point, Allan. I have moved along from this thing to
the next to the next - including Monster and Career Builder and more.
And as I said - nothing has come from it. I'm not blaming those job sites -
the problem is probably the fault of my sub-par portfolio presentation, but
I still need a decent job with benefits. I hope you've had much better
success with your career than I.

So the site in question was enticing. I'm just complaining about folks
taking advantage of those down on their luck.

I'll fret if I want to - sorry to disturb you. I vent on here sometimes.

Oh come on, quit fretting. It has every indication of being either a
scam to get your identity, or at best a pretty superficial job posting

established legit sites like Monster or CareerBuilder. Though even
there you have to use common sense.

I'm not particularly thrilled at the moment, I have a decent salary

Sorry if I misread your post, I got the impression that you were
putting resumes on web sites and sort of expecting a good job to just
fall out of the sky as a result. If you're working hard trying to
market yourself without success, that is frustrating, don't give up,
perhaps seek some counsel on what you could change in your strategy or

willing to do a mock interview and critique you, etc.

2008-02-14 Thread R A Bennell
Well, so far no chicken has tried to bite me on the back of the neck. BUT,
chickens tend to be tasty when cooked.
Not sure about mosquitos given I have never tried to collect sufficient numbers
to try cooking them.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not in favour of inhumane treatment of chickens. I
think they should be dispatched
carefully and quickly and with the least trauma to themselves and others as
possible.

On the other hand, I think that mosquitos should generally be dispatched in
whatever manner works as we often have
way too many of them and they fail to treat me with the level of respect that I
normally consider is acceptable.

all, but I have watched both his show, and the other one, Boyd or whatever.
Foose comes across as a nice, with a real love for what he does. Boyd on
the other hand, comes across to me as pushing his staff to get everything
done yesterday, and most projects seem rush rush rush. As I said, I'm not
into those cars, but I know they sell for big bucks these days. If I was so
inclined to part with that type of money, I sure wouldn't be handing over
any money to Boyd based on how I've seen him do business on his show. If I
was interested in such a car, Boyd's show would convince me to take my
business, and money elsewhere.

I'm sure you're right, but if the show is an extension of how he works, and
in anyway meant to promote him business, kinda missed the mark with me.

If there was a show about disgruntled Ferrari employees leaving bottle caps

Re: [MBZ] Saw a 1999 diesel

2008-02-14 Thread Zeitgeist
The rust problem he was referring to there, was more than likely related to
the spring perches, which were a serious design flaw associated with the
W210 chassis. I'd seriously consider either a '98 or '99 E300D, but the
first thing I'd do is remove the front springs, break out my MIG setup and
beef up the perch welds. Other than that, they're nice cars.

Anyway, I talked to him and told I was interested in Mercedes diesels and
that I have had several, etc. Well, he warmed up to me and started telling
me about all of his MB diesels. He said that this car had 345,000 miles, he
was the original owner and had no problems other than maintenance items. He
said he routinely got 37 mpg and it was the best MB, he had ever had. He
said the only warranty work done was that they had to replace the shock
towers when they rusted out. The strange thing was that he did not have any
other rust problems. There was no rust on the car. He said he had no plans
to get rid of it unless he had to pay for an engine rebuild and wouldn't get
rid of it until it had at least 500,000 miles.

That was encouraging to hear, because I thought these later models had all

Re: [MBZ] OT: Chickens

2008-02-14 Thread R A Bennell
Around here that sort of thing might happen near the end of the school year.
The graduating class likes to play
little tricks on the school. A couple of years ago friends of my younger son
were kicked out of school for hanging
a dead racoon on the flag pole in front of the school. They got away with it a
couple of times but I guess the
humour had worn thin by the 3rd day. Don't know if it was the same racoon and
they managed to retrieve it from the
garbage after the caretakers took it down or if they got a new dead one daily.

Somebody abandoned 60-70 chickens in a public school building after hours.
Left them food and water and free range in the hallways. School had to

Thanks Alex, sounds like more than a 10 minute job, so it will have to wait
for the weekend. Just finished washing the car, and getting pretty good at
drying it before the water freezes on it. lol.

Having some problems with the vacuum door locks again. I'll write more once
I figure out how to word it, but I have a feeling, my father is behind this
great vacuum door lock mystery!! lol.

Again, thanks for the tips Alex, I'm off to the garage now to make sure I
have a 4.5mm hex, with an extension, and funny enough, I think I do. :-)

 I
   get to it? :-)

From memory, open the glovebox and there's a Philips screw on the left
side (right side of the center vents). Remove that and you can take
off the metal cover. Then shine a strong light into the vents and
you'll see that the knob in the middle is connected to an arm that
opens and closes a big flap right in front of the AC evaporator. Wave
hi to the evaporator, this is the closest you'll get to it unless you
take out the entire dashboard (20+ hour job per book!). The arm
disconnects with a long 4.5mm hex driver. (I'm not making that size
up, so far I haven't seen it anywhere else on a 124 or any other car).
Then the whole vent assembly pulls right out. The lightbulb socket
snaps into a little plastic panel. Pry it open with your fingernail.
It'll probably break and need to taped back together after you change
the bulb (available from Rusty). DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST or you
are guaranteed to short out the socket while fiddling with it, which
will blow the special red fuse behind the instrument panel and shut
off all the dash lights until you pull the panel out and swap the
fuse. I learned the hard way.

Also, should the knob for the headlights be back lit as
well. If so, mine has never worked, but if it has one, might as well
 see to
it while I'm doing the light bulb thing. :-)

That one's a lot easier, just pull off the knob and there's a big nut
behind holding the switch into the panel. Maybe you have to undo the
panel right above your knees as well in order to get the switch out
from the back---I forget. Either way, it's pretty obvious, no secrets
or tricks, unlike the center vent---you should be able to figure it
 out. ;)

Oh, they're both the same size bulb, used throughout the dash.

Foose is more than just Chip Foose. His father, Sam Foose owns, or owned, a
company that did car design and had most of the contracts for AMT models
back in, I think the 80's. At the age of seven Chip was helping his father's
company draw up prototypes for models.

He worked for Boyd Coddington in the 90's and is responsible for the
creation of the Boydster I and the Boydster II and was President of
Coddington's Hot Rods by Boyd. However when Hot Rods by Boyd faced
bankruptcy he left and founded Foose Designs.

He builds one off hot rods, modernized classics and has a line of wheels
with his name on them. The show is not necessarily an extension of how he
works, rather, it was posed as a challenge. Could you rebuild a classic in a
week. Most of his day job work takes months, usually.

I think I'm going to let him rebuild my `66 230. Wonder if he'll try to put
an IH Diesel in there.

And as I said - nothing has come from it. I'm not blaming those job

the problem is probably the fault of my sub-par portfolio presentation,

Re: [MBZ] OT: DDT was: Chickens

2008-02-14 Thread Curt Raymond

I was under the impression we were concerned about what it HAS done to people...

http://www.chem.duke.edu/~jds/cruise_chem/pest/effects.html#human

A study in 1968 showed that Americans were consuming an average of
0.025 milligrams of DDT per day!
At concentration above 236 mg DDT per kg of body weight, you'll die.
Concentration of 6-10 mg/kg
leads to such symptons as headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and tremors.

So I weigh something like 110kg, 256,960mg of DDT kills me. In 1968 it'd have
taken me 649 days to consume that assuming it all stays in my body.
Uh... thats kinda scary. Of course the same article says that DDT is not
readily absorbed into the skin.

But of course theres another side: http://www.junkscience.com/ddtfaq.html

The truth probably lies someplace in the middle.

I remember reading something not long back that suggested stopping the
use of DDT was one of the worst things that
has happened to 3rd world countries. We were afraid of what it might do
to people so we stopped producing it.
However, what the mosquitos do in many tropical countries is a whole
lot worse for most people that the effects of
DDT ever might be.

post office. I jumped out to have a look/feel when the owner walked up.
Can I help you? His was just a babe with only 181K on it, and he's owned
it since 1992. When I told him about my SD, he said that they're wonderful
cars. I've never taken a look at a W210 or W211 though, but I would sure
like to check out one of the new CDI's. One would cost more than the Dodge
pickup, but it wouldn't be able to tow the boat too well (unless it was an
ML320CDI(.

Stopping the distribution of DDT killed *Millions and millions* of people in

While some claim DDT was the reason for the decline in eagles and other
birds, there's recent evidence DDT had nothing to do with the birds - and
the millions of dead people are still dead.

Re: [MBZ] MBTex/leather interiors on eBay - reputable?

2008-02-14 Thread R A Bennell
Not so sure about that. Lots of slippery spots here too. Suspect we are just
more accustomed to dealing with
slippery. I guess you might not think so if you saw the way people drive. They
forget that things get slippery
every time it snows. We had a little bit of new snow so intersections get
slippery where people brake or
accelerate. You have to learn to look for snow in near the curb so that you
don't slide right into the
intersection. Easy to get surprised as it is not slippery everywhere - just in
spots.

Cold, yes, but not as treacherous as the good old D.C. ice storm we just got
hit with, which disabled millions of vehicles (well, tens of thousands
anyway) and caused much slippage on slick sidewalks and broken bones
(including our Sec. of Defense).

they are those i generally call blacks because that is what they went by

for a while, they liked afro-american but that is no good today, when they
seem to like to be called african american.

why can't they settle on what they want to be called already so we can know
this and move on? this endless name changing is madness.

A lot of it seems to be media driven. There is such an effort not to offend
anyone these days that the press keeps
endorsing new descriptions. Someone decides that Negro is not a good word so
then they use Black, then that is not
acceptable and we have African American. Some probably try to use it to their

it just sounds like insanity to me. we ought discourage people from doing
this, whether it is the blacks themselves or a media effort to further
confuse us. it is also interesting that we now settle on african american
which is filled with logical problems that cause us to revert to black
anyway.

if a north african berber of a south african white moves to the usa and
becomes a citizen, he is not an african american because he is not
black. i know that there are many educated people on this list who have
not been completely victimized by the school system so i imagine this logic
has to be troubling for many of us.

i mean, doesn't institutionalized nonsense bother you guys?

Foose is more than just Chip Foose. His father, Sam Foose owns, or owned,
 a
company that did car design and had most of the contracts for AMT models
back in, I think the 80's. At the age of seven Chip was helping his
 father's
company draw up prototypes for models.

Could you rebuild a classic in
 a
week. Most of his day job work takes months, usually.

I think I'm going to let him rebuild my `66 230. Wonder if he'll try to
 put
 an IH Diesel in there.

i remember in the limited time i spent in the corporate world, orwellian
doublespeak was the order of the day. i never really got a feel as to
whether people actually believe the nonsense they are fed or that they are
just so terrorized that they dare not question it.

can i be a hungarian american if my mother was from slovakia? can i be a
slovak american if i don't like hockey? what about all the great slovak
hockey players in the nhl who are to this day referred to as czech? if i
keep asking these questions, can i get something for nothing?

i live in an insane world and i don't like it

I know that this is correct about DDT...(whatever my opinion is worth) In
fact, in Africa there's a campaign to bring it back!

The WHO has changed its stance on DDT. I think even Bill Gates' Foundation
is trying to re-instate the use of it. (wait a minute, did I just kill my
argument?)
