I remember Marshall saying that hidden rust in a W116 is bad. Rust can hide
in so many places, and once it gets to the structure, it's a gonner. I
wouldn't mind having a nice Diesel W116 (well, at least as nice as my 300SD
W126). You know how I am with Mercedes Diesels, at least the ones with 5 or
6 cylinders (the 1972 220D being the exception).

A couple of weeks ago, the price of diesel was 3.529. Then it jumped to

I adjusted well to 11-7AM. I'm NOT a morning person.

doing taxes, writing a score, doing a schematic, on goes the pot of coffee
and I'm in the office until sunrise. I can't focus on those things "human

I was a bachelor in the USAF stationed at Panama City, Florida and was
made Officer In Charge of the midnight shift. It was a very isolating
experience. Later on, after our division flunked a politically-motivated
IG inspection, we were put on 12 hour shifts, 6 days a week. Several
senior sargents and I were on 9 P.M. to 9 A.M., while the other senior
sargents and the other lieutenant were 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. Never were so few
supervised so much by so many ...

And well you should be. Particularly with your newly-increased tribe, not
to mention Regina. Are you a night person? I am and I found swing shift
(4 P.M. to midnight) quite tolerable. Graveyard shift was difficult.

[MBZ] vacuum pump-down time?

2008-03-06 Thread Allan Streib
Changing oil tonight I managed to snap off one of the plastic tees
near the filter housing cover. Trying to pull the lines of the other
two branches I managed to snap another tee.

Ran to AutoZone in another vehicle and got some new tees and vacuum
hose. Replaced the broken tees and the related small lengths of hose.
Started the car, and it won't shut off. I'm certain I didn't cross
any connections, and don't see any other broken tees, but wondered if
it takes a few minutes of running for the system to be evacuated of
air after sitting open.

I'm going to take a little drive here in a while and find out...

nearly perfectly into the IP's timing bore, and doesn't need the nut

a bit small to start with, then filed it open incrementally until it
dropped snugly over the tab on the IP's camshaft. Let the timing

Re: [MBZ] Anyone got one of these

There was a movie back some years ago with Richie Pryor, I can't
remember what it was called, where he was involved in something with
this huge guy. They went to steal a car, was like a Chevette or Vega or
something, RP said "You won't fit in that" and they guy ripped out the
front seat and sat in the back and drove off, and just fit in there.
That was funny.

The repair for those dampeners in the clutch plate is a new clutch
plateoh and while you're there a new disc and bearings since the

[MBZ] Follow-up: growling in 300TD manual gearbox at neutral

2008-03-06 Thread Euan
Hi there colleagues

Long time ago, I posted a message asking what might have suddenly caused
the harsh growling in my 1985 300TD 5-speed gearbox when the wagon is
idling at neutral. Wiggling the gear stick in the gates at neutral
intensifies the growling.

Now I'm reporting on progress.

* My very experienced MB fixer has drained the fluid and found
nothing metallic in it. That's good.

* He suggested dismantling the gearbox for a look-see but that was
going to cost more than the wagon's nominal market value. Besides,
he didn't think replacement parts would be found easily

Lucky I baulked at this suggestion.

Since then, he's had a 240D manual trans with the same but very much
more pronounced symptoms. Dismantling the gearbox revealed nothing
untoward, and the symptoms were still there when the box was put back
into car. Bet that pleased the 240D owner.

Now the thinking is that the growling is 'referred' noise transmitted
into the gearbox from clutch plates vibrating after full or partial
failure of their dampening spring mechanisms (dampening in these old
diesels being rather rudimentary but a particular necessity).

I don't know too much about this, never having seen a clutch-plate
assembly in the raw. Doesn't sound quite as expensive to fix.

Do any of you have experience of this enough to comment?

Thanks

Euan

Re: [MBZ] How hard should you drive it?

2008-03-06 Thread LarryT
Hi Dan,
Those kinds of trips are the best tune ups it will ever get! WHen I
rebuilt my 78 240D it was ok around town but the improvements after several
10 hour round trips at 65-75 made it such a sweet engine - it was like I
imagine a new one would act like. It used to struggle to get over 70 now it
runs to 75 without much thought.

Driving a diesel is the Perfect way to keep them in tip top condition -
whether a truck or car.

I fear there are going to be lots of MB diesels that are sluggish even
though fairly new - new owners driving them & taking it easy on them. They
really need to have the engine and oil run to normal temps to force out
impurities - for long periods of time. I think the best way to drive them
(when new) is easy for the 1st 1000 miles then foot to the floor - unless
the Blue Light Specials are out and about.

   They love fast driving!

Funny, my 300D's fuel gauge reads high (half a tank when empty) UNLESS
I fill up with B100. Sticky stuff on the sensor wires getting
loosened up by the solvent action of the bio? Probably, but not worth
it to me to fix at this point since the error is consistent and
therefore work-around-able.

Where lucky that the MB's shipped out here had an engine, let alone
fancy gizmos like that.
As an example all Oz delivered 123's had manual climate controls, don't
think it was even an option to have auto climate.
Anyway the seating position in the 124 is pretty good, I wouldn't mind
having power seats with memory feature because I share the car with the
missus. Alright for her, she jumps in and moves the seat forward, I have
to either reach in and move the seat or squeeze in and then adjust the seat.
Wonder how hard it is to retrofit electric seats into a 124?

There should be a 5w40 that's highly diesel rated.

Down here, our choices are 15w50 gasser oil which carries
a lightweight diesel rating (API class CF I believe), and
the Delvac 1 5w40 aka Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck or some such.

If your oil carries the same API ratings we use, anything CF, CH, CI
would be fine if it's reasonably thick. Don't go sticking 0w20 in
an old Benz, even in winter. Your 10-50 probably pours a bit better
than our 15-50. That 5w40 CI-4 rated stuff we get would be ideal
year round. At our local Walmart, it was about $22 for 5 us quarts
of the 15w50 or $21 for 4 qts of 5w40, so I buy the 15w50 for my
300sd and my 190e, although the 5w40 would probably be slightly better
in both cars.

Feel along the side of the steering column for a switch. Move it
towards you to telescope the wheel to you, and away to move it away.

All NA spec 124's that I know of did that. If your car doesn't have
much in the way of power toys then you may not have this handy
feature.

It was good for me on long trips to stretch out but still reach the

OK, so here we go again. I have been meaning to ask this anyway so here goes.

Mobil 1 is the liquid of choice right?

So, what particular vintage is required for the old 115 300D? I have been using
Shell Rotella 15-40 if my memory is
right (about the viscosity #'s)
The Mobil 1 I see on the shelves around here does not say anything about
putting it in a Diesel.
Is any Mobil 1 acceptable for the old Diesel engine so long as I stay with the
higher viscosity. I think I saw
either 10-50 or maybe 15 or 20-50 on the shelf last weekend but did not buy it
then. Need to fill the engine this
spring as it is currently sitting empty. Drained after it got cold last fall
and the oil was such a mess I just let
it sit and will deal with it before starting this spring.

Randy in Winnipeg where it was - 32 C this morning and predicted to be similar
tonight

-Original Message-

Or maybe cars running on 60's vintage motor oil?
Remember when people used cars (with big block engines) to tow 20' travel
trailers? Remember how they couldn't restart the next morning because the
motor oil was solid? I remember a mechanic (Smokey Yunick?) writing about
removing the oil pans to cut the oil out of them. Said you could roll it
into a ball and bounce it off the wall.

Correction, 240mph wooden car. Only 20mpg.
A fellow near me fixed a rusted out X-1/9 (aren't all Fiats rust-buckets?)
by building a wood strip replacement body for it about 25 years ago. He
claimed it made the car 400lb lighter. Absolutely beautiful, like a well

Clean the trigger points. If they persistently foul, you have a worn
bushing in the distributor, and it's a real pain to fix. Check to
make sure the mechanical advance works, and free it up if it's stuck.

Keep the retard diaphram, it's used to bump the idle up with the AC

[MBZ] Dash Wood 1985 300SD

2008-03-06 Thread George Larribeau
After my adventure into the HVAC vacuum actuators in my car I decided to
address the trim wood. It was delaminating from the metal piece glued in it's
center. I have re-glued it with liquid nails and used a 'clamp kit' from harbor
freight. Have more work to do on it but it looks like it will turn out OK. The
little rubber shield around the ignition lock was cracking off and I plan to
use silicon glue and sealer on it. Will know later how this works out .

Kevin,

Marshall would remind us all that the fuel, boost, and vacuum,?systems must be
"right" before ANY linkage adjustments are made.?? This because wider throttle
openings would be necessary if the engine is not producing the correct power.

A 0 to 60 time under 15 seconds would be a good starting point.

Jim in Phoenix

Thanks, Jim. That's what I thought, and the throttle linkage setup sounds
like the most sensible place to start. I think that this tranny (722.3xx?)
also has a control cable for shift timing. Now that spring is on its way,
it'll be much more pleasant to crawl under there and "see" what's up.

I just got back from a 7,400 mile trip in my '82 300SD. Actually two
back-to-back trips from Des Moines, Iowa, to far downeast Maine. The
only time I drove below an indicated 80 was on mountainous backroads,
and there I was thrashing it pretty good, too, with lots of full-
throttle 3rd-gear climbs to the red line passing people up truck
lanes and just passing in general. On the highway, I'd regularly
leave 85 behind and the speedo on the top peg, with the revs still
climbing. Probably ran mid-nineties for an hour or two at a stretch.

Oil consumption DECREASED on this trip vs. what I'd seen before, fuel
mileage averaged 26 mpg in spite of some pretty severe head and
crosswinds, and the thing has NEVER run better.

Now has 307,250 miles on it.

I'd agree with Marshall--the harder you run 'em, the better they like
it. It's around town short trips that carbon these things up that's
bad for them.

No smoke, by the way, even wide open, at night, at any rpm.

One caveat--make sure your valves are properly adjusted. I used to
get smoke at speeds over 85 when wide open, and used to get 25 mpg.
Adjusting the valves stopped both problems. SInce they tend to go
tight rather than loose, driving real hard with valves out of spec
COULD burn a valve.

You short between the small wire and battery connection on the
solenoid. Not too bad on a NA 61x, but hard to reach on the turbo
models and impossible on a 60x. the starter it buried.

You can "jump" it at the wire terminals over on the passenger side on

You have a tow hook on the rear somewhere on the W124.

[MBZ] Manually engaging starter on W116 300SD

2008-03-06 Thread John Robbins

I'm looking at a car in Atlanta that one day just decided it didn't want
to start. When the key is turned nothing happens, no noises, etc. The
owner tried starting it in neutral, and has cranked the engine over by
hand. What do you guys think is the problem?

If I could make arrangements for a trailer I wouldn't be asking this,
but I can't find someone with a truck that can pull a car trailer. I'm
willing to take a chance that I can start it by either pull starting it
or manually 'jumping' the starter. I know that there is a way to engage
the starter by fiddling under the hood, but I'm not sure what needs to
be done. I believe it involves the terminal block underneath the
battery (on the W116 at least). Do I just need to apply 12V to the
solenoid on the starter? How much current does it need to handle (ie,
how big of a wire)?

Is there a place on the rear of my W124 where I can safely attach a tow
strap? Just for pull starting of course!

Thanks!
John

2008-03-06 Thread George Larribeau
Wired has some photos of the VW Golf Diesel Hybrid shown at the Geneva Motor
Show.

Personally it is not that I hate the Hybrid however it is a bit to complicated
for me (2 power plants)
But if this is to be, a Diesel just makes sense ...
