[MBZ] Hesitation Causes in 190D
It's not too bad, but going up the hill near our house with a relatively cold 87 190D NA, I shifted down to 2 (the thing will not shift down itself) and felt some light hesitation that came and went as we climbed the hill. Wonder if this is more likely to be engine or tranny? I'm still too new to the klatta klub to know if a diesel can act this way. As for the tranny: Recently, I checked the fluid and found it barely on the stick. Due to how difficult it is to get a reading on the stick, and thinking its being probably a quart and a half low would allow me to gingerly drive it to the store, I tried to climb our steep but short hill leading out of our home. I felt significant loss of power in a sort of on-and-off fashion. Cringing, I surmised this to be tranny slipping. I shifted to neutral and coasted back down the hill into my garage. So, can low tranny fluid cause this sort of slipping? By the way, the tranny leaks at a fairly significant pace - hence its low-ness. Re: [MBZ] OT - LCD TVs
Thanks for all the feedback, folks. Looks like Samsung is probably the one, which I had also figured out based on reviews I'm seeing. We're on cable here, but I have no idea what we'll end up with in Indiana. Probably cable as well, but that's going to be determined by where the house is. There are still a lot of places in the rural parts where cable hasn't reached yet. A contract ratio of 10,000:1 was mentioned, but I didn't think LCDs got in this range, only plasma? HDMI inputs are a must, and at least two - I need one for my Apple TV for starters. A lot is going to hinge on whether or not we leave our big (36) CRT TV with this house. We have a built in entertainment center that was designed for a large CRT TV, and it's one of the few that still fits. WE were worried about how to make a flat screen TV work with it in the future, as the size of the opening of the TV does not accommodate a flat screen TV's dimensions Again, thanks! Dan You rock. Congress can't do anything if the president doesn't sign the bill. Can override a veto. And if he _still_ won't do it they can impeach him and perhaps get someone who will. Takes cojones, however. Re: [MBZ] Hesitation Causes in 190D
felt some light hesitation that came and went as we climbed the hill. Wonder if this is more likely to be engine or tranny? Both can do it. One by slipping, the other by bogging down. (Fuel supply problems, usually.) The big difference is whether or not the engine RPM seems to climb during the hesitation, or not. Can be a bit hard to determine, but it's a _lot_ easier once you've been in one that's less subtle about it. You _really_ want it to be fuel supply problems, unless it's just low oil in the tranny. If it's slipping, once it grabs again you can sometimes feel an extra lunge forward as the torque converter does its magic to turn the extra RPM on the engine into extra torque. Y'know, like when you're winding out a gasser and as it upshifts you feel a lunge forwards as the gear 'bites'. Anyway, if it's at all like that it's the tranny. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Hesitation Causes in 190D
I would definitely consider this a fuel problem, either water in the fuel, or dirty filters.??A dirty?cannister filter can restrict total fuel flow in a way that limits engine power, and this would be most obvious while climbing a hill.? Change both filters and consider cleaning the fuel tank suction strainer. A remote possibility is a clogged vent line on the fuel tank.? Driving the car up the same hill with tank cap removed would be a good test for that. Re: [MBZ] SDL won't move
Best of both worlds. Buy the used one and put it in. Tear into the old one and see what you have. Hard parts are likely available new or used if you need them. My experience with re-built transmissions is not wonderful. I think the people who do them, generally do them as fast and cheap as they can. If you want it done well then you probably have to be prepared to pay a lot more than the average price advertised. Even then, I would wonder whether I had someone who cared or just someone who made more money on me. That is why I would be tempted to try it myself. I believe I have seen manuals advertised on rebuilding MB transmissions. What do you have to lose apart from some time (and your mind if it all goes bad!!) Dude, I used to buy expensive cars like that when I was your age or younger. Its a bad mistake. Wait till they get cheaper and you can pay cash. That is my advice. Hell, for all I know you are paying cash now John Robbins wrote: So I get sent up to Huntsville for a week of training which puts me near an MB dealer... never a good thing. They have an '05 CDI on the lot, and I took it for a spin this afternoon... I really really really liked the car... that engine is AMAZING. Most cars have to downshift to do anything, but this was like a big V8... it just growls a little bit and you start going faster. The only complaints I have are that I like the seats in my W124 better (this could be because I didn't fiddle with the ones in the CDI long) and it doesn't have the satellite radio option. That is actually a deal breaker. The salesguy is going to call me back tomorrow with the service history, and what it will take to get the sat radio in... Oh, another complaint is that the car costs more than $5k ;) Its Anthracite Grey, has 67k miles on it, and they want $26k for it. Seems like a smoking deal to me. Has already hit 50% depreciation. :) Someone please talk me out of this!! Great Idea, I doubt if that pump would self prime. Put the barrels up about 3 feet and they would gravity feed enough, pressure washing does not use too much water. Ah yes. I didn't think to recognize whether the rpms were flaring when the hesitation occurred, and whether it lurched forward when the hesitation stopped. I bet it is fuel related. I do have new filters for the thing. So with a filter change: If the primer pump is operating properly, does one simply button back up the fuel system and then pump that thing until air isn't noticeable escaping anymore from the pump? I've not done it before. Or had they done away with the primer pump on this model (87 190D), and you just crank the starter 'til it self-purges? Re: [MBZ] OT: For some reason I am drawn to this
Probably the long answer, is that it is not a bargain if you don't need it or have a real use for it. Consider the long term costs of having it hang around. If you think you can flip it for more money, don't waste your time. It has not real value beyond being useful. Apart from that, who knows? My father had a 67 F100 (Actually badged as a Mercury in Canada) that gave good service back when it was new. Some folks had difficulty with the twin I beam suspension eating tires. They are difficult to align if they get out of whack. You basically tie it down and then bend the arms using a hydraulic jack. Sort of a rough adjustment so you need to be lucky. The old Fords are good trucks. The new ones are even better for my money. Unless I really needed a beater truck, I think I would buy something newer. A 97 F150 is the first of the newer body style. They can't be all that expensive any more. I looked at a couple of Samsungs at Dead Sam's today while I was passing through. One of them (I think it was a 40) said it had 5000:1, but other than that I didn't noticed any of the other specs. I didn't realize that LCDs had gotten up to those sorts of ratios - I thought that was one of the things that plasma screens had over LCDs. The 602 doesn't have a hand primer, so there's no pumping until you hear the pressure relief valve open. I don't pump my 617 either, I just change the inline filter before I go for a drive, and then when I get home I change the spin-on with the engine warm. Restart and hold 2000-2500 rpm with the throttle until it quits stumbling. Same with some of the over air channels like CBS etc. I dont recall it being like this before when I first got the TV. Before the United States entered the first World War, the Court had anticipated the objection that compulsory military service would violate the Thirteenth Amendment and had answered it in the following words: ''It introduced no novel doctrine with respect of services always treated as exceptional, and certainly was not intended to interdict enforcement of those duties which individuals owe to the State, such as services in the army, militia, on the jury, etc. The great purpose in view was liberty under the protection of effective government, not the destruction of the latter by depriving it of essential powers.'' Accordingly, in the Selective Draft Law Cases, it dismissed the objection under that amendment as a contention that was ''refuted by its mere statement. In addition, The Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of the draft. The Supreme Court's opinions leave no doubt of the constitutional validity of the act. In United States v. O'Brien, upholding a statute prohibiting the destruction of selective service registrants' certificate of registration, the Court, speaking through Chief Justice Warren, thought ''[t]he power of Congress to classify and conscript manpower for military service is 'beyond question.'''http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/article01/41.html#f1449#f1449 In noting Congress' ''broad constitutional power'' to raise and regulate armies and navies, the Court has specifically observed that the conscription act was passed ''pursuant to'' the grant of authority to Congress in clauses 12-14. [MBZ] OT but related, way cool
I know a lot of you are really mechanical junkies, so this might be of interest. This web site is The Kinematic Models for Design Digital Library (KMODDL). http://kmoddl.library.cornell.edu/collection-toc.php It has lots of really cool mechanical devices, and a lot of old technical books that have been scanned and posted. It is a great time-waster but also a neat resource for technical info. Donald Snook wrote: WRONG! A lot of the papers were released including his honorable discharge from the Texas Air National Guard on October 1, 1973. Oh, I thought Rich was asking about JFK (JohnForbesKerry, not JohnFitzgeraldKennedy). Seems like after Kerry came stateside, he got some political ideas, and asked the Admiral he was working for to discharge him, as he conscientiously objected to the war and wanted to devote himself full time to his agitprop activities with VVAW (www.vvaw.org) and run for Congress. Can't let military service get in the way of political ambition, now, can we? It seems he requested the Swift Boat assignment himself. I've seen three explanations floating about for that. 1: He wanted to be like the other JFK. 2: He'd rather be the commander of a small boat than just another officer on a larger vessel, or 3: It was perceived to be relatively safe duty. http://25thaviation.org/johnkerry/id15.htm ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Man bites dog, was guns Now - Back to Guns OT OT
OK, here goes, although I'm not sure how this ties into your yellow line analogy. A gun is just as likely to kill you as protect you. It is impersonal. Having one means that you potentially allow someone else - a family member, friend, or criminal - the means to injure or kill you, even if by accident. For example, someone breaks into your house but isn't armed. You point a gun at him and he wrestles it away and shoots you. Were you really safer because of the gun? Or even if he were armed, if he knows/sees you are armed is he more or less likely to use his weapon? This is not to say there aren't murderers and evildoers out there intent on harming you, but I just don't see a net benefit in gun ownership. After the extensive background check and training, those who carry a concealed weapon in Va are qualified to carry and to use a gun. Just 2 weeks before the murders the President of the college and others in Va had convinced the state legislature to *not* allow CCW holders to bring their guns on campus - and it cost 30 or more students their lives.
