#1 Gun rule: 'Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he's too old to fight,
he'll just kill you.'

Well, here is the proof:

The 71-year-old retired Marine who opened fire on two robbers at a
Plantation, FL, sub shop late Wednesday, killing one and critically wounding
the other, is described as John Lovell, a former pilot for two presidents.
He does not drink, he does not smoke, and he works out everyday. Lovell was
a man of action Wednesday night. According to Plantation police, two masked
gunmen came into the Subway at 1949 N. Pine Road. Just after 11 pm, there
was a lone diner -- Lovell, who was finishing his meal. After robbing the
cashier, the two men attempted to shove Lovell into a bathroom and rob him
as well. They got his money. However, then Lovell pulled his handgun,
opened fire, shooting one of the thieves in the head and chest and the other
in the head. When police arrived, they found one of the men in the shop.
K-9 units found the other in the bushes of a nearby business.

They also found cash strewn around the front of the sandwich shop according
to Detective Robert Rettig of the Plantation Police Department. Both men
were taken to Broward General Medical Center, where one, Donicio Arrindell,
22, of North Lauderdale died. The other, 21-year-old Frederick Gadson of
Fort Lauderdale is in critical but stable condition.

A longtime friend of Lovell was not surprised to hear what happened. ''He'd
give you the shirt off his back, and he'd be mad if someone tried to take
the shirt off your back,'' he said. Lovell worked as a pilot for the
Marines, flying Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

He later worked as a pilot for Pan Am and Delta. Lovell is not married and
does not have children.

He is not expected to be charged, authorities said ''He was in fear for his
life,'' Rettig said. 'These criminals ought to realize that most men in
their 70's have military backgrounds and aren't intimidated by idiots.

The only thing he could be charged with is participating in an unfair fight.
One 71 - year young Marine against two punks.

Two head shots and one center-body-mass shot - good shooting!

That'll teach them not to get between a Marine and his chow.

Don't you just love a story with a happy ending?

On the other hand sometimes it does not work out so well.

http://www.wthr.com/Global/story.asp?S=8582594

"Investigators say an attempted robbery ended in gunfire in a
parking lot at West 38th Street and Moller Road just after 11 pm
Monday. The victim was a 72-year-old Hispanic man who witnessed a
young man holding a female friend of his at gunpoint, attempting to
   take her purse.

"The man pulled his own gun in protection, pointing it at the
robber. The suspect immediately fired several rounds at the victim,
striking and killing him. He was pronounced dead at the scene."

I guess the lesson is, if you are going to pull a gun on an armed
individual in a situation like that, better just shoot him straight
away. Or at least as soon as he twitches in your direction.

Re: [MBZ] US Foreign Aid - Military industrial complex long term costs

2008-07-03 Thread Hendrik & Fay
I look at it this way, spending money on military stuff is an investment
in security. Like installing a car alarm or home security system. Sure
it is one of those things we rather not have to do but that is the
situation we live in, until the situation changes I guess we are stuck
with having to spend squillions on tools of death.
Sure I would like to take away their tanks, planes and give them
bulldozers, excavators to build things rather than destroy stuff, sure I
would like to take away their rifles and grenades and give them hammers
and saws, sure I would like to train them to build and fix rather than
teach them to kill and hate but right now we have to face up to the fact
that we are animals and will do as our instinct dictates. That instinct
dictates that we look after our own herd and do whatever is necessary to
ensure our herd survives and that includes having tools that enable us
to protect the herd.
Or in other words while the herd across the border has tools to threaten
us with, we need tools as good as theirs or better.

Not being of a military mind I probably got some of the terms incorrect
there. Some with more knowledge help me on this. BTY, my nephew makes a
pretty good living designing guidance systems for some of the missiles we
use in Iraq, and my son is chatting with General Dynamics about possible job
openings, so I am appreciative of the general economic benefit of military
expenses. I do want to point out the additional cost to our economy of our
investment in military preparedness expenses.

The main problem with the $$ investment in the military-industrial complex
is that there is a difference in life cycle for the capital outlay. When
you build a car or a pleasure boat or a 747 it has a life cycle that has a
high percentage of churn in the general economy, which is quite different
than of a missile or a tank or an armored personnel carrier. It is true
that a lot of stuff is getting used in Iraq and Afghanistan [with little
returning to the US], but how much equipment just sits [for the most part]
in Armories or depots around the country or world until it is obsolete?
That same investment in most other goods keeps things churning to a
considerably higher degree than it does for most weapons. Certainly most of
the personnel costs and general items are not much different, but there is
little but scrap use for decommissioned ordinance.

I agree on the benefits to our companies through this but I'd guess theres
20-30% waste in this system. Seems to me it'd be more efficient if we could
pay the military industrial complex and knock out the middleman. I'm funny

Of course all that money just goes kill people. Overall I'd rather see the

I don't see a problem with that.  I assume you know who owns the military
industrial complex?  It makes up millions of teachers retirement funding as
well as anyone else who chooses to but stock in one of the defense
contractors companies.  Around 60% of the US population own stock in one
form or another.  Many own it thru employer sponsored 401k retirement funds
but a stock is a stock.  The money that doesn't go to pay dividends goes to
pay the huge poplation of people employeed by all those contractors.  By
giving money to Israel we keep them armed and it helps our economy.

Few other countries return as much money to us as Israel.  I would never
suggest we shut down Israels foreign aid - should have said that in my
earlier email.   There are some countries with very odd needs for foreign
aid.  As with all generalities - they're imprecise.

2008-07-03 Thread Smith, Todd
Thanks for the tip,

I am sorry that it has taken me a week to followup but I broke my thumb
whch has slowed my computer work down.

Don't drop a 120lb power supply battery on your thumb.

:)

For mine, I did not get the rocker arm kit. Just the kit with the new
internal piston seal, the cover gasket, and internal check valves.

Note that if yours is like mine, there is a check valve inside the
pipe adapter fitting where the main vacuum line connects to the pump.
Once I had mine open, the pieces of the check valve fell out, and I
think this might have been my problem all along. So, you might want
to remove that and check it before you order anything -- just unscrews
from the pump body so it would be quick to check.

I am finding that my hearing is fading and I cannot hear the pinging. I
remember when I could - my old Suburban
used to ping if it did not get decent fuel. My son was commenting that his
truck was pinging but I could not hear
it. That is sad as one might actually damage an engine just due to getting
old.

The two stations I buy from charge 10c and 8c per grade. I buy my premium
from
the station that charges 8c. Right now, it's 3.999, 4.079, and 4.159 there.
I suspect a 50/50 mix would rate above 89 octane when mixing 87 with 93.
I'll keep putting in 40-50% premium until it starts to ping or until the
premium
in the tank drops to 50%. If I'm still not pinging at 50%, I'll start
filling
with 1/3 premium.

Thats my point. Its blood money plain and simple. $2bln. It's a scam.
There are plenty of places that $2bln could be spent here at home. If
they can't survive without us, how/why is that our problem? Israel
created its own hole when it started allowing non palestinians (lets not
confuse Palestinians as Jews and Arabs are both semetic Palestinians) to
migrate en force to its country. Its the same as us letting all the
Mexicans in that want to come in and then expect China to pay for it. We
no longer need Israel and morally we should not support them in their
endeavours. We, with France, already broke international law in giving
them "the" bomb. What else to they need from us?

As far as the money coming back to our corporations, that is the most
preposterous reasoning I have ever heard. Blood money. It certainly
only makes the situation there worse not better.

I agree on the benefits to our companies through this but I'd guess theres
20-30% waste in this system. Seems to me it'd be more efficient if we could pay
the military industrial complex and knock out the middleman. I'm funny like
that.

After doing the WBs on my 78 240D using grease from he dealer, I bought a
tub of grease from McParts called Slick50 - same color, same everything. I
suspect Slick50 and others are buying something developed by Shell or
similar and putting it in their own containers. Seems to be good stuff
though -

2008-07-03 Thread LarryT
Wow! Ya'll are really making me feel good about my 91 300D with cold AC -
for over 2 years everything has worked great.

I was telling my wife this AM as she was leaving for work - our decision to
buy this W124 was a very good one - we paid $8K but after I did some minor
maintanence (serpentine belt, vac pump, etc.) it is *exactly* like a new
car. It had 99k miles & I'd buy another if I found one similar -

Re: [MBZ] OT I think I hate vista

2008-07-03 Thread dave walton
The freebie version only works on Servers, not XP or Vista.
Technically, you need VMWare Workstation. It has a lot more bells and
whistles and is their main moneymaker.
You need a hack to get the server version going on XP or Vista (it works fine):

http://www.vmwarez.com/2006/05/installing-vmware-server-on-windows-xp.html
http://www.petri.co.il/virtual_install_vmware_server.htm

Or you can google it if those do not make sense.

Once you have it installed, run the VMWare Server Console. Here are
some suggestions:
Do not reserve disk space when creating the virtual hard drive.
Do not split the disk files into 2Gb segments - unless you have an old
backup program that won't handle large files.
Start off using the suggested parameters.
Set Startup/Shutdown parameters:
On Host startup - do not start virtual machine
On Host shutdown - Shut down guest operating system
Once you have activated the OS in the virtual machine and applied all
updates (use Microsoft Update - not Windows Update), shut it down and
zip or copy the files into a new subdirectory. This allows you to
create a new VM without using up another activation by copying the
files into a new subdir.

If you have a physical machine and you want a virtual image of it -
use VMWare Converter (free). It's way cool:

Re: [MBZ] US Foreign Aid

2008-07-03 Thread Rolf
Or maybe the oil companies would start drilling in the 80% of untapped
drilling fields in deep water. What again was the purpose to keep Iran
out of Iraq, what business was it of ours? Short term appeasement tends
to lead to long term wars according to history. I am not saying all
Foreign Aid is bad, I just think what we are doing in NK is bad.

I am also of the opinion that every country should be allowed to have
nukes but thats just me.

Re: [MBZ] US Foreign Aid

2008-07-03 Thread Tom Hargrave
Short term appeasement is always better than short term war.

For example, we are dealing with the after affects of Saddam's reign now but
we paid him to keep Iran at bay for many years. And back then, Iran was
actively trying to expand & consolidate the entire Middle East.

The world would be a very different place today if one country controlled
the entire Middle Eastern oil supply. I suspect that $4.00 / gallon for gas
would look pretty cheap!

Tom,

The stations here have button selectors that mix 93 and 87 internally
to dispense 89.

I "mix" to get 89 or better octane at lower cost. In my area,
regular, mid and premium are about 4.09, 4.29 and 4.42, respectively.
If the pricing was applied linearly, 89 would not be 4.29 but instead
about 4.20 instead. Saves about $2/tank and takes less than two
minutes more time.

[MBZ] Antenna installed

2008-07-03 Thread Curt Raymond
You may remember a couple weeks ago I picked up a generic Hershmann (sp)
antenna off eBay for cheap, well cheaper than a correct one anyway.
Today I finally got around to installing it in my 190D. The install was super
easy, you need only conect 3 wires. Of course to do that you have to splice a
bit, its not an OE antenna. Took me about 30 minutes all told.
The caveat is the antenna goes up and down, theres no middle position anymore.
The antenna switch makes it go down when triggered in either direction. For me
that is not a problem at all. I'm tickled to have an antenna that goes
anywhere. This is my third Mercedes and now the only one with a moving antenna.

My thought was to use the bits from the 190D antenna to make the 240D antenna
work. Thats possible. I'm reasonably sure I could get it working BUT... I can't
mount it as the part that mates to the body is way different on the 190D. I
could cobble something together with RTV and spit but for another $50 shipped I
could buy another antenna... Which is what I've done. The guy shipped super
quick last time though with the holiday I don't expect this one until next
week. Thats okay I don't expect to have the car on the road for another week or
two anyway until the door handles get here from Wilton and as my check was
super slow to get out the door that only happened just the other day.
I've still got a rust spot on the 190D to deal with and try fixing the odo that
Andrew sent me (thank you sir!). If I can fix that one I'll try fixing the one
in the 240D...

Had similar issues with our F150, they have the COP (coil-on-plug)
ignition where there is a little coil for each plug. One of those
coils had failed so we were running on only 7 cylinders.

If that's the problem, need to replace the coil, and the plug. Maybe
replace all the plugs while you're at it.

Re: [MBZ] OT Ford Question/ignition misfire

2008-07-03 Thread R A Bennell
It is the 5.4 with the COP setup. I hear that there is often a leak over #4 but
that would be the back cylinder on
the driver's side of the vehicle. The heater hose apparently often drips onto
that spot if the clamp is not tight
enough. Was looking on a Ford forum last evening. Have not done anything about
it yet - just driving the 300D but
need to see if I can have a look tonight. Have a scan tool so will see what it
says first. Should buy a set of
plugs at the very least and install them anyway - but I hear that is not a fun
job - especially the first time one
does it.

You didn't say which engine, but assuming the mod V8 with coil on plug, we
found signs of standing water in one of
the plug holes on the passenger side of the engine, almost like the under hood
design had funneled water to that
cylinder.? Anyway, the crud buildup from evaporating the water was fouling that
plug.? this was on a 99 F150, here
in Phoenix, where opportunities for driving through standing water are
infrequent.

Thanks, Craig. That looks like the kind of transformer we were looking for.
Suppose I can mount it on it's side and run jumpers from the pins. The
dimensions look like it will probably fit in the box okay but will have to
check.

IIRC back when I worked with electronics, a linear voltage regulator was
several components on a small board. Has that now been combined into one
chip? Probably couldn't afford to generate too much heat in this
unventilated box.

Sundial is correct. A local chain is doing the same but instead of using a
lever, you select one of 6 grade buttons on the pump. The grades run 87, 88,
89, 90, 91 & 93 octane.

Let me clarify the Korea thing - PCs made in Korea for sale in this

Some stations (Sonoco?) used to have pumps that allowed you to select the
exact octane you wanted with a lever. In the background, the pump dispensed
a mix of super premium & regular based on the lever setting.

The 102 octane leaded racing gas I mix with regular works better in my

Have tried that successfully with my 300E, ~ 9 gal 87 and 6 of 93.
Saves about $2-3 tank compared to using mid-grade ane net octane is
higher. Takes less than 2 extra minutes.

No one is making x86 chips anymore (except maybe Transmeta). Any
recent vintage computer is x64, although many retailers are still
shipping with x86 versions of windows because they have a shitload of
x86 OEM versions to unload. OEM versions do not typically include both
x86 and x64 versions - it's one or the other. The retailer is free to
charge what they want for an OEM x64 upgrade as far as I know.
When I say OEM, I am referring to the discounted Windows package that
manufacturers of PCs are allowed to bundle with new hardware. They are
available individually all over eBay - although technically it
violates the licensing terms, but it will activate just fine. Just
stay away from the ones coming out of Korea. They won a settlement
against Microsoft and distribute a special version designated with an
"N" prefix.

The engines suffer from oil leak issues around the cam carrier and the
valves can be a pain to adjust because the adjusters ten to seize up. The
correct battery is hard to remove because it has to pulled out at the exact

Other than these issues, it's just a mix of regular late 70's Mercedes

I am thinking about buying a 280CE. Apart from the usual 123 coupe body
issues, any flags on this engine and drive train? Seems to have been a low
production model. Anybody ever had one? Gary-didn't you have one??

 Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Dwight

Re: [MBZ] always on blower motor 1981 300SD

2008-07-03 Thread barry Stark
Bill -
Not sure what you mean by the "always on" blower unless you mean that the
blower is always running at some speed unless the system is turned off.
There is only the one blower AFAIK. I couldn't find any other in the manual
either. I had a similar noise in my '81 SD as well and it turned out to be
an old dry leaf that had found its' way in there rubbing on the squirrel
cage. I did go ahead and lube the one end of the motor, the end that is
accessible, with ATF. I have had no new noises since. It is really quite
simple to drop the fan motor out on this beast. First you remove the knee
bolster and, if it is still there, the closeout panel between it and the
firewall. This makes the cover to the blower box very accessible. It is
removed via a few screws. A few more screws and the fan motor just drops
out. Just be careful of the power lead connector that you don't put any
undue loads on it coming out. Reassembly is just the reverse. Oh yeah, note
the screw lengths as they are not all the same, at least on mine. I am
sending a couple of pages from the manual as well. The manual only shows the
LH side bolster being removed but the right side is similar.

Have tried that successfully with my 300E, ~ 9 gal 87 and 6 of 93.
Saves about $2-3 tank compared to using mid-grade ane net octane is
higher. Takes less than 2 extra minutes.

Re: [MBZ] 280CE

2008-07-03 Thread Tom Hargrave
Not pushrod, DOHC. They are good engines. I owned a 1975 280 and a 1978
280CE. The 75 was carbureted and the 78 was FI.

Both preferred mid-grade gas & would diesel when you turned the key off
without it.

Expect 15 MPG in town and 18 MPG on the road, but like I tell my friends who
comment about my Corvette & mileage, it doesn't matter at 50 - 100 miles a
week.

The engines suffer from oil leak issues around the cam carrier and the
valves can be a pain to adjust because the adjusters ten to seize up. The
correct battery is hard to remove because it has to pulled out at the exact
correct angle.

Other than these issues, it's just a mix of regular late 70's Mercedes

Note that this is a printed circuit mount transformer. You will have to
make some modifications to the mounting and electrical connections if you

Re: [MBZ] OT I think I hate vista

2008-07-03 Thread Curt Raymond
Really? I'll be honest that I haven't seen a retail Vista pack.
Remember also that there are what, 5 versions of Vista? I was given to
understand only one of them (Ulitmate?) came in an x64 version.

The retail Vista package ships with both x86 and x64 versions and the
license to run either but not both. Most people stay with x86 because
there is no upgrade path from x86 XP to x64 Vista - it's a complete
reinstall. Microsoft followed the same licensing scheme with their
server products.

I'm somewhat saddend now that I've discovered my welding skills are more or
less adequate. I kind of wish I'd bought that Saab 95 I looked at last winter.
It needed some fairly major welding but nothing worse than Jim did on the
Frankenheap...

It was a VERY cool car. The guy still wanted too much ($2k) though.

The engines suffer from oil leak issues around the cam carrier and the
valves can be a pain to adjust because the adjusters ten to seize up. The

Other than these issues, it's just a mix of regular late 70's Mercedes

Re: [MBZ] 280CE

2008-07-03 Thread Tom Hargrave
I owned one & drove it quite a while.

The engines suffer from oil leak issues around the cam carrier and the
valves can be a pain to adjust because the adjusters ten to seize up. The
correct battery is hard to remove because it has to pulled out at the exact
correct angle.

Other than these issues, it's just a mix of regular late 70's Mercedes
issues.

I am thinking about buying a 280CE. Apart from the usual 123 coupe body
issues, any flags on this engine and drive train? Seems to have been a low
production model. Anybody ever had one? Gary-didn't you have one??

 Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks Gary,
I have been lusting after a 300CD but they have become so pricey-there is
one now on Hartford CT CL for 9500. Watched several on e-bay a couple weeks
ago-ranged from $3800 to $7100. I may have found a nice 280CE-will go check
it out. Gas mileage is not a concern as I have the two diesels. As for
underpowered-well I just sold my 240D automatic that I drove for five years,
so the 280 has to be a step up.

have to get lucky, especially if you require a nice one cheap. you might
have better luck hunting down a w126 sec.

The retail Vista package ships with both x86 and x64 versions and the
license to run either but not both. Most people stay with x86 because
there is no upgrade path from x86 XP to x64 Vista - it's a complete
reinstall. Microsoft followed the same licensing scheme with their
server products.

I've often thought the same thing, the hardware is orders of magnitude
faster, yet Windows itself doesn't seem to perform much better than
Windows 95 did on an old '486. Maybe my memory is clouded

Where windows really seems to suck is at disk IO. If you have a
program that is hitting the disk drive, the entire system slows down,
even programs that are not using the disk at all.

At work we have virtual servers now, and ONE VM doing heavy database
work, hitting the disks, slows ALL the other VMs on that host to a

Well, some of us are retired and do have lots of time - not sure how the
rest of the active group - especially Kaleb - do it. I only get really
tired of it [and yes, think I should just drop the list] when folks post
lots of the sort of comment that is made among a group of the same political
persuasion, basically a form of "Yeah, all them Democrats / Republicans are
just idiots...," Myopic statements without providing solid backing and
reasons for it only mirror what is going wrong with our civility and our
political life. In the entire history of the world there is possibly one or
two people who have been swayed to change their political beliefs because of
such, but I have a strong suspicion that not anyone on this list is ever
going to change their basic belief system by being bludgeoned with email
arguments. I enjoy a difference of opinion, but there really is more than
one possible answer to about any question, and it is almost never a question
of who is right or wrong. Not even with who will be president.
My perspective anyway.

Totally new for them. I won't be surprised if they botch it.

I believe the hardware processor race is slowing down, I'm not
sure how they're going to make any dramatic leaps forwards,
I suspect that work right now is all in parallel cores and
the like, which does nothing for straight-line speed like
MS so loves to burn up. If they want 'new and improved'
they're going to have to start being more efficient. I'm
just appalled at now fast the native hardware is, yet how
slow the user experience often is.

Probably not as long as the chipset drivers for new computers will continue to
support it which they will for the next year or two anyway.

I'm actually sort of excited about Windows 7, the promises are more sane than
anything I've ever heard Microsoft give out before.

I think that I read that microsoft is going to eliminate XP soon. They are

also not going to support it. So as that fact is coming I am considering
getting a XP disc that has the SP2 on it so it will see the large hard
drives.

Just a thought.I think Vista is a mistake. I venture that microsoft will

bend toward what has worked in Linux in the future. Though they will never
say that Linux works.

Rather than wind your own, one could take apart a suitable 220->24V
transformer (common furnace part?) and center-tap it. Perhaps less
work, but still a lot. One might also consider analyzing the circuit
to see what it is that wanted the 12V in the first place, perhaps its
needs are a lot less than the 24V, which usually runs 'everything'
in a HVAC control.

It may be that the 12V is just a feed for a processor power supply,
which could be supplied by a linear voltage regulator or something
like that. Small, is my point. Processors don't usually run on
12V, so it's not like you'd need to hit that exactly anyway, were
that the case. Depending on the circuit.

The 'troll' under the stairs has two 12V transformers, because
it needs both 12V and 24V. The 24V is for the sprinkler system
valves, the 12V was immediately regulated down to 5V for the
processor. I only did it that way to not burn so much voltage
as heat. (It's a linear regulator. Later I also added some
significant 12V loads too, for low-voltage walkway lighting.
That was OK, because the two 12V transformers were in fact
from low-voltage lighting kits. But that is irrelevant.) I
could have run it all from 24V, and either put a bigger heat
sink on the regulator or used a series dropping resistor to
knock it down that way.
