TE, Your underlying assumption is that the scumbags at gitmo are not 
treated well enough.  Show the evidence.  and don't repeat 
unsubstantiated blog stories.  They have more comforts at Gitmo than 
most of them have ever had in their life.  The guys who are 
mistreated are the GIs who have to guard the scumbags.  Have you ever 
talked to any of the poor guys that have to guard these scum?  The 
scum there are treated far better than they deserve.  They think we 
are ridiculous for treating them so well.

The prisoners in our state pen had way more comforts when I was 
growing up than I did.  Color tvs, at a time when few households had 
color.  Cable tv when few households had cable.  not allowed to work 
to repay their victims, or (perish the thought) pay for their 
keep.  I had to work my butt off for no pay.  Few of the families I 
knew had it so plush as the prisoners.

You probably need to replace the blower motor too -- when they start  
to pull too much juice it's usually because they not longer turn  
freely on the bearings.

I've got two to replace soon, as the used units weren't much better  
than the ones that locked up.

If you are used to a 123 diesel and judged the transmission
accordingly then I bet it shifted quite a bit harder than "perfectly".
 I can't imagine an '87 300D in the mechanically neglected condition
you describe having a properly operating vacuum system, which is a
prerequisite for the transmission to work right.

Lumbar support?  Really?  An '87 with the orthopedic seats would have

Did you not have the seat all the way down?  124s have more headroom
than 123s and 126s, modulo sunroof.

Sounds like a good parts car for someone with a cosmetically nice

It's because the one in the glove box didn't have any electrons
flowing through it to carry the heat away. In a circuit under
the hood there would be plenty of fresh electrons flowing
through it to the motor where there is plenty of air flow to
takeover for the electrons it transporting the heat.

Besides, under the hood it would be closer to the Mobil 1 oil.
We all know that Mobil 1 will solve all automotive problems.

Just curious, Loren -- how many years did you spend in the military? You
seem to be really big on preserving our freedoms and the perceived
traditional American way of life, at any cost or philosophical compromise. I
am confident that you were willing to invest at least four years of your
life defending same by serving your country in uniform.

I would also question the phrase "historically illiterate Obama lovers." Why
do you assume that anyone who prefers Obama to McCain might not be educated
-- or at least well read -- in the field of history and, perhaps equally
important, political science?

the Japanese in WWII

Here is just one forgotten tidbit, but who cares, only 517 POWS were 
killed there?

After the war, the Australian Army 7th Infantry Battalion, including

Infantry Brigade) toured the island on November 10, 1945.

Australians immediately located the

I saw an article in a local rag recently about someone converting a
mid sized japanese car to electric for around town trips. He claims to
get 35 miles per charge with golf cart batteries. He used a "aircraft
generator" for the engine. That's all the info provided, but it did
re-stir an interest in trying this myself. I was thinking of something
smaller and lighter, but still just for very local driving. I'm
thinking a Spriget or Spitfire.
Anyone know of good info/resources for the controller circuitry?

Palestinians just don't have the money for airplanes.

I couldn't agree more, as the other side of the story is rarely presented.
Homes being bulldozed with families inside, orchards being torn to shreds,
men, women and children shot in the streets, killed with rockets from the
sky... it's no wonder these people have nothing to live for.

So basically you want to throw out the Geneva Convention on some BS
technicality? Unfortunately, when you have such a broadly defined war aka
War on Terror, the enemy is not a single country, it's whoever the hell you
want it to be.

The Geneva Convention defines the rules of war. Just because the "enemy"
doesn't represent a sovereign nation or wear its uniform, does not mean the
rules of war do not apply.

180k or so.  I have not checked it.  Indy says there is slap and it 
should have a chain & tensioner.  no big deal, I can roll it in and 
put in a tensioner.  In the old days with the master link, boom, 
done.  No problemo.  I have never purchased one of the tools, and 
really don't want to own one.  I'd probably only use it once.  It may 
only need a tensioner, or maybe not even that, but I do think he 
knows chain slap when he hears it.

I am always amused when people are willing to toss out the moral 
equivalence argument whenever it suits them.  But I take your point, 
well-put, about stooping to the level of the savages, and can't really 
disagree with it -- my point was that the GC was put together to cover 
national military activities, not a bunch of random a-h's fighting to 
kill anyone who happens to disagree with them on whatever stupid 
savagery they are touting at the moment.  They and their supporters fall 
back on the GC argument (which strictly speaking does not apply to them) 
whenever you catch one who has sawn off someone's head with a dull 
blade, or tried to blow themselves and/or others up, or done some other 
savagery.  Their buds think we are a bunch of fools, and play on that 
very well.  But then again showing our better way does seem to have 
convinced a lot of folks that our way is indeed better, and maybe that 
is the path that will work as it has in the past (along with some AC-130 
action from the high ground).

[MBZ] 91 350SDL blower fuse

Wife told me coupla hours ago that blower fuse in SDL blew today, i. e.,
blower suddenly quit.  Few minutes ago I went out to check it, install new
fusible link, etc.  First glance found one end of the holder melted, fuse
mounting screw and end of wire on one side "cooked."  Finally got
melted/cooked top off the box and found about 1/3 of bottom of the box and
most of one end of the box melted away, leaving fuse mounting screw and end
of wire on that side just hanging there in space.  I thought, "Well, I'll
clean it up and mount a new fuse to the still secure screw on one side and
to the "floating" screw on the other side and try to see what else there
is."  'Went to driver's door and retrieved an envelope containing a "new"
fusible link from the black plastic MB records pouch.  'Opened the envelope,
and guess what??!!  The "new", never-used fusible link has melted!!  'Really
confusing at first to open the envelope expecting to see the 30 amp fusible
link I put in it 2 or 3 years ago and see instead a thin squiggly line of
something a little over an inch long with strange little discs at each end.
'Took a moment to realize the "new" fuse had melted there inside the car.
Any more spare ones I get henceforth will be kept in the house!

Rusty, do you have a blower fusible link and HOLDER for a 91 350SDL?  'Think
I got this blown fuse and the spare one from ya 2 or 3 years ago.  How 'bout
a return on the un-used one? Grin-Grin.

[MBZ] 87 300D in Atlanta.

Good:
I am guessing it is a true 80k.
Engine was silky smooth and accelerated well. There was some diesel 
leaking from the various hoses (not returns but main fuel lines). 
Everything else looked ok.
Transmission shifted perfectly.
Seats are mb tex and in good condition.
Suspension was in great condition, new bilsteins in the front, tie 
rod/centerlink/LCA bearing/balljoints all in very good to new condition.
Typical southern car, no rust. Dash was OK.
Alignment OK, car drove mostly straight but one of the tires was semi 
flat which would account for the slight drag to that side.

Bad:
Wheels/tires: tires mismatched with some real cheapies up front. Paint 
on rims was pealing.
AC: Blower is broken so everything after that is a ?
Rear right window: I could hear the motor attempting to move the window 
but it wouldnt
Drivers seat: Needs noodling and the lumbar support was all the way out. 
Didn't know how to adjust. Seat motor worked AOK.

Ugly:
Paint/body: car was repainted and sloppily at that. Front passenger side 
1/4 panel had been pulled out partially after wreck, bondoed and whole 
car painted. Would def need a new 1/4 panel and a decent paint job for 
it to look new. Other than that I could not see a single ding on the 
car. Trunk was in good condition no sign of a rear end.

Exterior condition: 4/10
Drivetrain: 9/10
Suspension: 9/10

I am not a big fan of the 124/201 series cars. To small for my comfort, 
I am used to W123 headroom (I'm 6/2). I would never give anything a 
10/10 but the suspension was worthy of it. I would say $2600 is a bit 
much, not sure how much wiggle room there is though. He was mexican 
after all. Second time I talked to him he rolled is R's. Nice enough 
guy, a mechanic by trade that flips cars to pay the other bills. Owned 
the car a month, listed it as soon as the registration cleared.

[MBZ] Ebay Idiots

got the OWC email about the ibook G3 800 going to pocket change and  
had to think hard about it for a few days.  Finally decided I had a  
need so peeked at eBay for prices then placed an order.

Granted the OWC units are used and may not be in retail shape, but  
then most of the eBay ones are no better.  Some folks have starting  
bids that are so high, you should just order the machine fully loaded  
from OWC ($249 for max ram and such) instead of the barebones units  
on auction. Watched a few I put lowball bids on go for $400!!!  BTW  
my unit should be here Friday.

[MBZ] Diesel Benz Emissions Inspection in PA

The 84 300SD needs to get inspected in the Philadelphia area, I look on 
the web site and can't see anything definitive about diesel cars, except 
this:

Are any vehicles exempt from Pennsylvania’s emissions program?
Yes. Vehicles will be exempt from the program if:
• the vehicle has been owned for one year and driven less than 5,000 
miles in the
prior year. However, motorists must go to an emissions inspection station to
verify the vehicle’s mileage and receive an exemption sticker. Motorists 
can do
this when they get their safety inspection if the station performs both 
types of
inspections.
• the vehicle is a new car, not previously titled and has less than 
5,000 miles
before registration; motorists should receive an exemption sticker valid 
for up to
12 months upon receipt of the new car from your new car dealer.
Exemptions are determined by a certified emissions inspector.

Will motorists still need an emissions inspection sticker if their 
vehicle is exempt
from the emissions inspection program?
Yes. Even if the vehicle is exempt from the emissions inspection program 
motorists will
still need to go to an inspection station to receive an exemption 
sticker for the vehicle.
The station can charge a fee to issue an exemption sticker.

Are any vehicles excluded from Pennsylvania’s emissions program?
Yes. Vehicles will be excluded from the program if:
• the vehicle is registered as a street rod, classic, collectible, 
antique or specially
constructed vehicle and motorcycles.
Vehicles excluded from the program will not have the “Emissions Inspection
Required/Diesel Vehicles Exempt” message in their registration card.


Will motorists still need an emissions inspection sticker if their 
vehicle is
excluded from the emissions inspection program?
No. If the vehicle is excluded from the program, no emissions message 
will appear on
the registration card and as a result, no sticker is needed.

I guess you have to look at the registration to figure it out? Anyone 
know what the deal is there? There are answers to similar questions that 
seem to contradict each other...I guess excluded and exempt are the key 
words?

I guess I don't want to be quite as jaded as I sometimes come across, but
what experience I have had with our legal system was screwed by perjury on
the part of NARC [not drug related] and his attorney, and lying by police
[and a cousin I spent quite a bit of time with is now a federal judge, so I
am not entirely out of my realm when I venture thoughts about the legal
system]. I have also interviewed felons in state custody who freely admitted
to various serious crimes, but not to the ones they were in prison for - and
they had willingly named other people [none of whom were a positive
influence on society] to get them arrested on fake charges in exchange for
better sentences when they were on trial.  I'm glad most of them are off the
streets, but realize the lawyers and police putting them there scare me
also.  I trust politicians and their minions even less.  I have also done
enough travel in other countries to be sure that I would rather live here
than in any of them.  That doesn't mean I think we are always even good, or
the best at everything.  Our voting system is one area we need some work on,
our political system - whether skewed by lifers in the system [elected or
staff] is another.  BTW, I suspect term limits and one term politicians
[which I support] will have it's largest effect in increasing the power and
influence of staffers who can stay on for multiple terms.   Enough.   Bush
is, for a few more months, President.  I can accept that, but I for one will
be glad when he is gone.  Is he evil or stupid?  Not that I know of, but I
don't like him or his methods or just about anybody's politics.

I got talking to this elderly lady poll worker in Melrose, Massachusetts 
(I think one of two generally Republican towns in MA, our used-to-be 
mayah, who was gay and took ovah from the old gay mayah who was 
80-something, is now head of the Log Cabin Republicans -- we were 
tolerant and accepting!) about the mechanical voting machines (huge old 
green things about twice the size of a big refrigerator) one time when I 
went to vote, maybe 20-25 yr ago.  She told me very quietly, looking 
around warily, that they used to arrive with the votes already set for 
the "winnah" in each particular community, except ours because they 
weren't Democrats, but it was not so prevalent anymore (emphasis on "not 
so").  She sorta laughed, but that was the way it was, and might still 
be in some places.  Now of course we know about the leanings and general 
elected officials in Massachusetts...but I digress.

OK, we know the final outcome.  Local stories perhaps, but there were many
of them pointing out - from all across the state -  things that were either
illegal in disallowing voting, and just massive stupidity on the part of a
Democratic official in Palm Beach telling voters that the place to hit to
vote for Gore was the second spot (IIRC) when it was actually the third. It
was a very poorly designed ballot that I had trouble with [and yes, probably
designed by a Democrat] that helped those results quite a bit in that area.
The specific results of that area {and my memory is not the best on this
stuff from so long ago] indicated that a candidate did much better there
than in other areas - more than enough to tip the results even without all
the other stories.  I am not ignoring the fact that Florida votes went to
Bush, just being slightly amazed that people think the ruling or even the
recounts of those who were allowed to vote means the process was above board
across the state.  I don't have the kind of faith in our political or
judiciary or voting system you do.  I would assume as an attorney you focus
on a need to accept the final legal outcome - and I am not carrying a banner
outside the White House - but I still don't think it was a clean win.  Had
Gore won I would feel the same way, but I think the country would have been
better off.  As to why he was reelected, I don't really understand that.  I
can tell you that a number of people I talked to were not happy with him but
had bought into the idea that we shouldn't make such a big change during a
war.
Like I said before, all history is biased.  Everyone focuses on what they
want to hear.

Sorry Bill, Mitch is correct.  If you don't believe him or me, you could
actually read the decision in Bush v. Gore.  The Supreme Court ruled that
only recounting certain counties in Florida as opposed to all counties
violated the equal protection clause. The Court also held that if the
individual counties were applying different standards, the count would not
be uniform.  BY THE WAY, the associates press actually went down to Florida
and hand counted ALL of the votes in Florida using the standards offered by
the Gore team and Bush won the state.  They also counted all of the votes
using the standards that Florida law required, and Bush won. They also
counted the votes using the standards offered by the Bush team (and this is
no surprise, but Bush won).  Finally, the AP came up with their own
standards and whaddayaknow, Bush won.

So, I think if you are of the opinion that President Bush did not win
Florida you are not only reading some altered history, but are ignoring the
facts.

Finally, if you think it some sort of commonly held belief that President
Bush stole the election in 2000, why didn't all of these people revolt and
vote against him in 2004.

By the way, I think the subject on this thread has been very appropriate.
If voters really were careful in voting and really did try to educate
themselves, then I think we would all be better off.  But, sadly most people
don't vote, can't name the vice president, have no idea who the speaker of
the house is, don't know who their local congressman is and asking them to
name a Justice of the Supreme Court other than Clarence Thomas would elicit
nothing more than dumb looks.

[MBZ] Boats

Today begins our vacation, for which the last two months or more
I've been preparing our boat.  Today I wiped down the faded orange
gel coat of the boat with my magic shine-and-glo.  Stinks a bit but
looks a lot better now, and should hold up for more than the
week I need it to.

List content: My 'polish' comes right out of the tank of the
190D!

Coolant, if present, will cool pretty much no matter how old it is.
The problem is corrosion damage it does to the inside of the cooling

[MBZ] 48 state drive

Anybody else reading this? They're having serious temp issues. I'm thinking old 
coolant, probably the horrible green stuff... Maybe a bad cap?
Anybody else got an opinion, it seems like that car should cool well enough 
that 90 degrees with the AC on shouldn't overheat it. It looks to be a 250 SE 
but its hard to get a good look at the trunk lid in their pics.

They seem to have low expectations, not car people...

That's what I did, not that my vote meant anything. I voted for Bush in '00, 
Gore won Michigan. I voted for Badnarik in '04, Kerry won Michigan. My 
representation in the electoral college: zero. I probably voted for Reagan in 
1984. If I did, that's the only time my electoral college delegate voted the 
same way I did.

Living in the S. FL area where much of the strangeness happened I actually
talked with some of the folks involved. During the election itself I was in
Peshawar, Pakistan [I voted early], but there was much still going on when I
got back.  It was quite surprising to me that I was able to follow the
stories quite well for the next week even in some remote areas of the Tar
desert in Pakistan and the following week in rural areas of Bangladesh.  All
history is biased because the fullness of any issue isn't available even if
any writer were able to be absolutely fair in reporting it.  Were it really
as one sided as either of us have presented it there wouldn't be so much
disagreement about it, and there still is.

great. That includes the freedoms and liberties given to us by said
document. Gitmo detainees are non combatants and should be extended
those same rights or they should be treated as prisoners of war and

Where does is say anywhere in the Constitution that those rights and
liberties granted *only* apply to citizens? Note the word posterity in
the preamble.

Sorry Bill, Mitch is correct.  If you don't believe him or me, you could 
actually read the decision in Bush v. Gore.  The Supreme Court ruled that only 
recounting certain counties in Florida as opposed to all counties violated the 
equal protection clause. The Court also held that if the individual counties 
were applying different standards, the count would not be uniform.  BY THE WAY, 
the associates press actually went down to Florida and hand counted ALL of the 
votes in Florida using the standards offered by the Gore team and Bush won the 
state.  They also counted all of the votes using the standards that Florida law 
required, and Bush won. They also counted the votes using the standards offered 
by the Bush team (and this is no surprise, but Bush won).  Finally, the AP came 
up with their own standards and whaddayaknow, Bush won.

So, I think if you are of the opinion that President Bush did not win Florida 
you are not only reading some altered history, but are ignoring the facts.

Finally, if you think it some sort of commonly held belief that President Bush 
stole the election in 2000, why didn't all of these people revolt and vote 
against him in 2004.

By the way, I think the subject on this thread has been very appropriate.  If 
voters really were careful in voting and really did try to educate themselves, 
then I think we would all be better off.  But, sadly most people don't vote, 
can't name the vice president, have no idea who the speaker of the house is, 
don't know who their local congressman is and asking them to name a Justice of 
the Supreme Court other than Clarence Thomas would elicit nothing more than 
dumb looks.

Wow... just wow.  I'm not even going to bother arguing with you.  No 
matter what evidence is presented to you, irregardless of the evidence's 
merit, you will twist it or discredit it so you can continue to support 
your view.  I respect the right for you to have that view, and I truly 
hope that our ability to argue/discuss these types of topics in any 
form/fashion continues for the foreseeable future.  IMO, Obama will do 
more to preserve that than McCain.. just look at McCain's opinion of 
giving habeas corpus to Gitmo detainees.  So much for respect of the

Sounds to me like it was a "Woah, we're both getting stupid here... lets 
both step back for a minute and think about this."  Would it have been 
any better if the first two were reversed?  Then it would have been 
considered a win then, but not having nuclear war would have been the 
real win for me.

Having spent a few weeks there [mostly Havana, but some wandering] I think
the main effect of the embargo has been to greatly increase support for
Castro among the Cuban people and give him a great excuse for many of the
problems he caused or made worse.  The threat of another invasion attempt by
the US was still live in the culture when I was there [in the 1980's], and
kept alive for internal and external political reasons.  It has been a great
unifying factor for the Cuban people the same way an attack on the US pulled
us together.

I don't use a tool for the timing chains. 

I purchased a tool for the 117 engine and found that when you remove the
head bolts to install the tool you then have to remove head to put heil-coil
in the block such that you can put head bolt back in.
