[MBZ] Gerrys trip--To BillR, Gary, Mitch, Larry, Dan, and the group

2008-10-16 Thread Archer
That was me. Lot's of family problems came up, but while I was upgrading the
'83 300D for the trip (putting in a new chain), the leg broke. Still hope to
make a short trip in a couple of weeks after the physical therapist releases me.
I could have finished the chain job now since I'm getting around fairly well
with a cane and walker, but my daughter was so upset about finding me on the
floor, I told her I would send the car to a mechanic. For some reason she
connected working on the Mercedes with the accident. The car is at the
mechanics (out in the woods). He is s-l-o-w but is supposed to do good work.
I'll get back to working on the Merz after the doc says I can get down on the
floor. Daughter will be okay with it by then.

The specially cut mattress and cover (done expertly by a mattress shop in
Tennessee) and the supporting structure is in and ready to go, and there isn't
much else that needs to be done except routine service.

I've had previous cars with mattresses taking the place of the passengers seat
and the back seat.

As Larry wrote:
"With the curtains closed and the pop-top down, you could camp in that thing
ANYWHERE, and no one knew there was anyone inside."

I used a little different approach. By preference I would park in a rest area
in the furthest space away from the rest rooms. I didn't use curtains because
I found that made police suspicious when they came by and they would wake you
up, look at your ID, etc. While sleeping I was below window level, so people
would look through the window and think it was simply a parked car.

Parking lots of closed bars were good places to sleep if rest areas were
unavailable. Police never bothered me there. They must have thought somebody
got too drunk to drive, got a ride home, and left his car.

Was sleeping in a bar parking lot one night when I heard a noise. A guy was
raising the hood up; probably aiming to steal the battery. About the time he
got his head under the hood, I reached over with my toe and blew the horn.
Heard this loud kerblam when the guy banged his head into the hood, and then he
took off running the fastest I've ever seen anybody go.

I wore very light clothes while on the road and slept with them so no one could
accuse me of public nudity if they did look in the car and the blankets were
askew. Every few days I would check into a motel, do laundry if necessary, and
get a nights worth of very good sleep.

It's a great feeling of freedom from responsibility and the cares of the world
to wake up in your car at dawn and watch the sun coming up; no matter if you're
on the plains, the desert, or along the seacoast.

One more story:
Drove into the Frisco Bay area one evening, went north on the coast road (north
of the bay), and parked in a parking area high above the ocean. Woke up
suddenly with the sensation that the car was shaking. Figured it was a dream
and went back to sleep. Heard on the radio the next day that there had been an
earthquake! This was during the late 1980s.

Re: [MBZ] gas and insurance prices

2008-10-16 Thread LarryT
I've been with SF for almost 40 years - home and cars - never even a little
problem. 2 cars totalled (not our fault) in the last 10 years but no increase
in cost. Neither was our fault - one was a sheriff who hit my wife and the
other was when my BIL was driving one of our cars. Never a question and the
payments were fair. Both of the cars destroyed were brought to us by our
mothers when they came to live with us - an Olds sedan and a Chrysler sedan -
great cars although the interior trim started to fail - but other than that
they were perfect - one was a 3.5L V6 and the other a 3.8L V6 - both delivered
great power and economy. If they'd been diesels they'd have been perfect ;-)

Wish we still had them --

When a hurricane came thru in '03 it damaged 2 homes we owned - when the work
slowed because all the contractors were busy elsewhere SF called to find out
what they could do to help. I'd give them the price for some part of the work
and they mailed a check.

No complaints from me.

Sincerely,

[MBZ] OT: AIG party

2008-10-16 Thread Mitch Haley

Last month, and just days after the U.S. government stepped in to save AIG with
a $85 billion taxpayer-funded loan, the company picked up a $440,000 tab for a
week-long retreat at a posh California resort for top-performing insurance agents.

That's in line with what I heard earlier. An competitively earned benefit for
sales agents, not a taxpayer funded party for executives. AIG has paid millions
in commissions to the same sales agents since the bailout, but I don't hear
anybody complaining about that.

[MBZ] Akebono brake pads

2008-10-16 Thread Max Dillon
Gents,

Installed the Akebono pads on my Wife's Infiniti last spring, along with new
Balo rotors. They're great, and I'll put them on my Benz when the time comes.
I wish I'd put them on years ago. Rusty recommended them, and he (as usual)
was right. They are very quiet, fade-free, and seem to produce very little
dust (but I hadn't really paid much attention up until now). The performance
is SO much better than the cheapo pads that were mounted years ago.

I've no idea where all these ideas about 'warm-up' and 'racing pads' come from.
Ceramic pads are standard equipment now on a lot of high-end cars (Porsche
comes to mind, and I think some MB models have them?) so the technology seems
to be mature.

I'm SURE that Marshall would approve! So there!

IMHO, Sleeping in a rest area would be very dangerous. They are infested
with drug dealers (Making transfers) and hookers.
In my Motorhome, when I need to sleep "On the road", I go to the small town
police station and ask to park in the far corner on the lot or a church lot,
never been refused.

QANTAS DIVE TRACED TO COMPUTER GLITCH
The abrupt dive of a Qantas A330-300 last week that injured scores of
passengers wasn't caused by a passenger's electronic device, but by an internal
breakdown in the Airbus's flight-control computer system, the Australian Transport
Safety Bureau said on Tuesday. The aircraft was flying at FL 370 en route from
Singapore to Perth when the Inertial Reference System malfunctioned, which
resulted in the autopilot automatically disconnecting, the ATSB said. However,
the faulty unit continued to feed false information to the flight-control
computers, which even with autopilot off, still command the control surfaces. Very
high, random and incorrect values of the angle of attack led the computers to
command a nose-down aircraft movement. The crew was able to recover within
seconds, with a maximum altitude loss of 650 feet and a maximum pitch down of
about 8.5 degrees, the ATSB said. Airbus told the ATSB it has never heard of a
similar malfunction, but all operators of aircraft that use the system have been
informed of the incident and provided guidance for a crew response to
minimize the effect of any similar failure. The ATSB said its investigation is
continuing.

No, I was just quoting a news item which explained that the much maligned
retreat was merely pre-arranged compensation for agents, when everybody seems to
be claiming that it's an executive party.

OTOH, the more recent UK hunting trip does seem to be an executive perk. I guess
running a company as large as AIG into the ground is hard work and they deserve
a break. Besides, if they are shooting peasants, pheasants, or whatever in
England, the AIG executives aren't sitting at their desks running our company

I'm guessing stale gas if it needs carb work when it's less than five
years old, or maybe your gas is nasty and eats fuel pump diaphragms
(alcohol?).

All gas here is now contaminated with E, all year round.
(Don't know about the airstrip.) Not too happy about it,
we have numerous things that sit long periods of time and
don't burn it up in a week.

The gas residue in the McCulloch was goo, but washed out
of the tank. The motor ran fine on fresh fuel, it hadn't

I thought about doing the same thing, I even had the lawn boy picked out. But,
I cheaped out and bought the Wal Mart Murray Motor. The first one I bought
worked very well (as long as I kept the blade sharpened). It was damaged in a
tornado (when the shed was smashed, it damaged the mower and it was cheaper to
buy another one). So, I bought another Murray. It worked great for 3 years
(never even changed the oil, just the air filter). But, the tire broke through
the deck (and I don't know how to weld). Then the throttle cable wore out.
There is a guy in the neighborhood over who works on mowers - he is retired and
it keeps him busy). So, I went over and asked him about fixing both things (I
could not figure out how to replace the cable). He said with parts and labor it
would cost me $40. OR he would give me $40 for my mower on trade for one of his

I can't recall now whether it was Airbus or Boeing, but one or the other
was outfitting their new planes with internet service for passengers,
and did not physically isolate that network from the navigation and
flight control network. I'm not sure anything really bad happened but I

Ah, here's the story -- it was Boeing:

All gas here is now contaminated with E, all year round.
(Don't know about the airstrip.) Not too happy about it,
we have numerous things that sit long periods of time and
don't burn it up in a week.

The gas residue in the McCulloch was goo, but washed out
of the tank. The motor ran fine on fresh fuel, it hadn't
run in years.

Re: [MBZ] OT: fruit drier

2008-10-16 Thread Jim Cathey

I just finished a second run of the drier. I'm no longer
sure the thermostat is broken, I put a dial thermometer in
there this time that I could see through the plastic door.
It never got as warm in there as I'd thought, so I turned
up the thermostat. That 600W element can't heat two buckets
of plums up that far that fast! I think it got up to 120
degrees in there, and the target was 140. Though it drew
more power this time it was done in less time, about 22kWH
and 36 hours. The optimal target would be 24 hours or a
bit less, one could do a load a day then and really put
them away.

I got another 6#. They're in freezer bags. The first batch
has had time to equalize, the crunchy edges are gone and the
whole prune is soft. Dry, but soft. I ate a few!

The neighbor's (very prolific) tree is empty, so I guess I'm
done for this year.

My experience is different. I've had State Farm insurance for more than
a decade. I have had several claims in that time, and never any
problems. In the one case where we were at fault, I never heard any
complaints from the other party about the settlement -- but I guess I

(Don't know about the airstrip.)

Avgas isn't contaminated with anything but tetra ethyl lead. That's why it can
be stored for years and still smell like gasoline.

Goo free gas is a must, lest your plane end up looking like Steve Fossett's.

There are two standards for avgas, 100 octane low lead, which has less lead than
the old 100/130 standard, but still twice the lead of twenty year old automotive
leaded gas, and 82 octane unleaded. Nobody in the USA refines or distributes
82UL, so the only thing you'll find at the airport is 100LL (unless your name is
Nendrik or Euan, they might still be able to get the high lead 100/130 avgas).

I use 100LL in all the occasional stuff (generators, string trimmers, tillers,
chain saws) and I run it in the lawn mower the last time I use it before winter.
I use unleaded pump gas in the outboard, and feed the leftovers to the lawn
tractor. I'd much rather run avgas in the outboard if only it didn't have lead
in it.

I used to put 100 avgas in my car when I worked at the airport summers
in college. 67 Buick Skylark ran really really well. I wish I still
had that car. My buddy tried some in his 65 Skylark convert (sky blue
with white interior, oh my) with the 445 Wildcat motor, oh wow He
sold that car for cheap because the tranny was going bad, did not tell
me he was gonna do that. I had my dad primed to buy it for my mother as
we both thought she might need a car like that. Only problem with that
strategy was that she drove like a banshee, would probably have totaled
it right quick before we had our chances at it.

-- Original message --
From: "Archer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
That was me. Lot's of family problems came up, but while I was upgrading
the
'83 300D for the trip (putting in a new chain), the leg broke. Still
hope to
make a short trip in a couple of weeks after the physical therapist
releases me.
I could have finished the chain job now since I'm getting around fairly
well
with a cane and walker, but my daughter was so upset about finding me on
the
floor, I told her I would send the car to a mechanic. For some reason
she

connected working on the Mercedes with the accident. The car is at the
mechanics (out in the woods). He is s-l-o-w but is supposed to do good
work.
I'll get back to working on the Merz after the doc says I can get down on
the

floor. Daughter will be okay with it by then.

The specially cut mattress and cover (done expertly by a mattress shop in
Tennessee) and the supporting structure is in and ready to go, and there
isn't

much else that needs to be done except routine service.

I've had previous cars with mattresses taking the place of the passengers
seat

and the back seat.

As Larry wrote:
"With the curtains closed and the pop-top down, you could camp in that
thing

ANYWHERE, and no one knew there was anyone inside."

I used a little different approach. By preference I would park in a rest
area
in the furthest space away from the rest rooms. I didn't use curtains
because I
found that made police suspicious when they came by and they would wake
you up,
look at your ID, etc. While sleeping I was below window level, so people
would

look through the window and think it was simply a parked car.

Parking lots of closed bars were good places to sleep if rest areas were
unavailable. Police never bothered me there. They must have thought
somebody

got too drunk to drive, got a ride home, and left his car.

Was sleeping in a bar parking lot one night when I heard a noise. A guy
was
raising the hood up; probably aiming to steal the battery. About the
time he
got his head under the hood, I reached over with my toe and blew the
horn.
Heard this loud kerblam when the guy banged his head into the hood, and
then he

took off running the fastest I've ever seen anybody go.

I wore very light clothes while on the road and slept with them so no one
could
accuse me of public nudity if they did look in the car and the blankets
were
askew. Every few days I would check into a motel, do laundry if
necessary, and

get a nights worth of very good sleep.

It's a great feeling of freedom from responsibility and the cares of the
world
to wake up in your car at dawn and watch the sun coming up; no matter if
you're

on the plains, the desert, or along the seacoast.

One more story:
Drove into the Frisco Bay area one evening, went north on the coast road
(north

of the bay), and parked in a parking area high above the ocean. Woke up
suddenly with the sensation that the car was shaking. Figured it was a
dream
and went back to sleep. Heard on the radio the next day that there had
been an

earthquake! This was during the late 1980s.

It's kinda stupid to design aircraft flight controls that are subject to
interference from cell phones and iPods and laptops, as had been stated
some years ago. The real reason for bans on cell phones was to make a
passenger use those usurious seat-back phones to make a call. I seem to
recall the FAA doing extensive tests that showed no interference to any
radios, controls, nav systems or whatever, which kinda makes sense if
you think about the environment an aircraft flies in (lightning
strikes?) and how that might affect things.

Bad software and system design and upkeep are bigger worries.

into her purse, still powered up. Doubt she even knew how to turn it
off. (Don't most people leave their cells on all the time, even when
charging? Experience in movie theaters, as well, suggests that the
majority also aren't aware that the things have ring volume settings.)

[MBZ] OT Farm/orchard/winery sale

2008-10-16 Thread Loren Faeth
Some of you may recall, our historic family farm has been forced into
sale. Partial listing will be found at www.sullivanauctioneers.com
within the next few days. There will be on-line bidding for the land
and some items. If anyone is interested in non-land items for online
bidding, be sure to contact the auctioneers.

How often do you have an opportunity to buy a COMPLETE historic district?

This sale includes the entire Faeth Farmstead Historic District. Most
of it is in tract 1, with a small piece in tract 2. It is listed on
the National Register of Historic Places. This land has been in the
family since 1832, and is the oldest orchard West of the Mississippi,
and just a few miles from the site of the first land grant west of
the Mississippi and North of the Des Moines River, a grant to Louis
Honore Tesson from the King of France, in the 1700s. Tesson
established the first orchard west of the Mississippi here, long
before the Louisiana Purchase. There is a lot of history here.

This is an ideal site for any Horticultural crop, including orchard,
vineyards and vegetable crops, as well as land for row
crops. Complete truck farm equipment will be on the sale. This was
one of Iowa's 54 licensed Native Wineries. Iowa has a long history
of grape and wine production up until WWII when the government
directed row crop farming for the war effort. There is a new
Renaissance of wineries and grape production in Iowa. Our juice and
retail building is an ideal building for a winery.

Both of the listed JD tractors have had recent major overhaul by JD
mechanics. the 1530 probably has about 200 hr since the OH and the
2020 I believe is under 100 hr since the OH and also has new rear
tires. The 1530 was purchased new in 1974, and was assembled at the
Mannheim Works in Germany. The 2020 is a 1968 and we purchased it in
1971, Both are really good tractors.

If you have any questions, please ask. Loren Faeth may be reached at
515 450 0717

Outside the auction Loren has for sale my JD5500N low/narrow
orchard/vineyard tractor. It is a great tractor. It has a 4cyl
turbodiesel I think the engine HP is 80. Transmission is 3 x 4 12
speed with forward/reverse shuttle. PTO is 540 Rpm with std and
economy setting. It pulls our NW430 Bean sprayer (30 GPM Bean Royal
pump) very easily. It has low hours. It has a cab, so makes a good
mowing or spraying tractor. Fuel consumption is half that of the
Massey or other JD tractors w/o turbo and economy PTO. There are two
remote Hyd, with Pioneer couplings, and a third live line that I
believe was used for a hydraulic motor edger on a mower. It is
Mechanical FWD. This is a nice unit! I purchased it with a home
equity loan on my house, so I need to sell it, since I no longer have
a use for it.

After the dust settles, I will be selling my 87 300TD, and 80 240D
manual. For sale now is my 300SDL, 1987.

IMHO, Sleeping in a rest area would be very dangerous. They are infested with
drug dealers (Making transfers) and hookers.
In my Motorhome, when I need to sleep "On the road", I go to the small town
police station and ask to park in the far corner on the lot or a church lot,
never been refused.

Donald,

Like you, I fear that the "truth" will surface after the fact..
And a question for all - I have heard that "your earnings" under
$250,000 or $200,000 (two versions out there) won't have any increase
in taxes. What is meant by "earnings" - Gross income, Adjusted Gross
Income or Taxable Income?? Big difference! Anyone hazard a guess?

Maybe it's not defined on purpose and the milling throngs just get
sucked in by "no new taxes" or maybe it's "sharing the wealth".

Take care,

Chuck

It'll be 'sharing the wealth', for 'Bama is more socialist than Gore or Hillary.

The way I heard it (may need confirmation) is that Barry wants all the Bush tax
cuts to expire, then he "won't raise taxes" beyond that level we paid under
Clinton. That would mean losing the retirement saver's credit for low income
households, the 100% deduction on health insurance for the self employed, the
$1000 child tax credit, the additional child tax credit, the §121 home sale
profit exclusion, the 10% tax bracket, the reduced tax rates on capital gains
and qualified dividends, ...

Well, Andrew -

One would perhaps think that no one would pay anything. but,
consider that some Americans contributed $2,146,846.54 so far during
2008 and $2,624,862.42 in 2007 to reduce the National Debt under the
terms of P.L 87-58. Those funds go to debt reduction only and never
are touched by Congress.

Re: [MBZ] QUANTAS dive

2008-10-16 Thread Peter Frederick

This "bug" or something similar has crashed at least two Airbus 320's that I
know of, one at the Paris Air Show -- in that case the computer shut off the
throttles repeatedly on takeoff and kept pushing the nose down. The French,
predictably, blamed it on the flight crew for "exceeding the flight envelope"
and "not putting the computer in manual mode", which at the time was
complicated. The other case was an Air India 320 that "landed" a couple miles
short of the runway, lucking on a golf course so there were few casualties.
Again, the computers put the aircraft into a "non-flying" mode and it took too
long for the pilots to revert to manual fly-by-wire.

I don't think the fly-by-wire is the real problem, just the "smart" part --
I've been informed that other aircraft with "smart" fly-by-wire have a big red
button readily available that when pressed instantly drops the "smart" part so
you have simple fly-by-wire rather than computer controlled flight with "data
input" from the controls.

A "bunt" like the Quantas plane appears to have performed can over-stress the
air frame, too.

And I wonder, wasn't that Egyptian plane that did the porpoise thing and crash
in the Mediterranean an Airbus? They blamed that one on the pilot committing
suicide, too . Maybe the flight controls just went nuts and he couldn't
remember (or manage) the multi-stop process to get the damned thing to let him
fly the plane!

Andrew has hit on a wonderful idea. I think it should be implemented
forthwith, much like the contribution to the election fund is on your

Put a bunch of check boxes on the form with suggested payment amounts to
maintain/grow the programs, e.g.,

National Defense
Infrastructure Construction
Research ( with sub-categories)
Health Care
Energy Independence Research
"Affordable" Housing
Education
Pork Projects
Wealth Redistribution
etc etc.

Some details of categories and such would have to be worked out. We
will then see how valuable these various things are to the people who
pay the freight. No different from when I walk into a store, look at a
price tag, and ask myself if I really need or want that.

[MBZ] Medical helicopters crashes

2008-10-16 Thread Archer
There have been at least 12 serious crashes involving medical helicopters in
the last year, according to news reports. In June, a federal safety official
said accidents of medical aircraft are at a "disturbing" level.
"We're very concerned about that," National Transportation Safety Board
Chairman Mark Rosenker told news reporters.
Wednesday's crash brings total fatalities this year to at least 28. Before
this year, the most killed in medical helicopter crashes was 18, in 2004,
according to the federal agency.

Recent crashes:
.Wednesday: A medical helicopter transporting a 1-year-old patient to
Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago struck a radio tower wire and
crashed in Aurora, killing the child and three crew members.

.Sept. 28: The pilot of a medical helicopter twice radioed for help in foggy
weather before crashing in a park in suburban Washington, D.C., killing four
of the five people on board.

.Aug. 31: A medical helicopter crashed into a farm field 40 miles southeast
of Indianapolis shortly after takeoff, killing three crew members aboard.

.June 29: Two medical helicopters collided near Flagstaff Medical Center in
Arizona, killing seven people, including two patients, two nurses and a
paramedic.

.June 8: A helicopter on its way to a Houston hospital crashed in a national
forest, killing all four people aboard, including a patient, nurse and
flight paramedic.

.May 11: A University of Wisconsin Hospital flight crew went down near the
LaCrosse airport after dropping off a patient. A surgeon, nurse and pilot
died.

Re: [MBZ] Brake Pad Question

2008-10-16 Thread Zoltan Finks
Thanks for the great input, guys. I have a question regarding a special
tool I was told I need.

I pulled off the wheels the day before yesterday and it seems to me
the 190D needs to be parked until the brakes get replaced. The only
damage I saw to a rotor was the drivers side rear which had a very
thin line cut into it.

So since the car is unusable, I marched (literally. well, being pulled
by my Doberman) down to AutoJoke and got their cheapest pads. $15 or
so for front, $25 or so for rear. Why the rear was more expensive, I
dont know.

Was surprised to see that that very little or no hardware came with them.

They guy sold me two packets of pin lube. Sounds familiar.

But he also told me I need a tool to compress the calipers on the
rear. Otherwise I will ruin the calipers. He says this is because they
are hooked via cable to the emergency brake.

So I bought the tool ($55), but the promise is that I can return it
for full refund, though they didnt put this in writing as I asked them
to.

Im hoping I dont run into any more unexpected difficulties. Hoping I
can find the manual CD and that it covers brake jobs.

Re: [MBZ] Brake Pad Question

2008-10-16 Thread Peter Frederick
On some american cars, the pistons on the rear brakes screw out to actuate the
parking brake as well as slide in and out with brake pedal pressure (or some
such) and you have to screw then back in to put new pads in. Unless I'm very
seriously mistaken, the 190 has the standard MB parking brake drum in the rear
rotor and the caliper is a normal ATE -- pull the pads, push the pistons back,
put new pads in.

If you have worn rotors, they need to be replaced, else the rear brakes will
get stuck and drag.

The older cars have drum parking brakes inside the disks, I thought the W201/124
did too. If so, the parking brake and caliper are unrelated and the tool to
screw in the parking brake adjuster on a piston is useless. BTW, the piston tool
is probably less than $55 at Autozone and they will loan it to you if you put up
a deposit equal to the retail price.

Re: [MBZ] Medical helicopters crashes

2008-10-16 Thread Rich Thomas
They are pushed to fly in marginal conditions, to unlighted, unmarked,
unfamiliar places, amidst various impediments, often at low altitude and
high speeds, day and night (mostly at night I think). In Houston 2 or 3
have crashed in recent years, that was sorta the consensus on them. Due
to the types of life-threatening injuries they are dealing with, getting
the patient to the hospital quickly is a very strong incentive to the
pilots (who obviously have no interest in crashing). It is a fairly
hazardous occupation, and by its nature is sorta uncontrolled.

In Houston the trauma hospital was about 2 miles away, and I would see
the choppers all the time flying off to pick up people, very low and
very fast over my house. My neighbor was a trauma surgeon there, he
talked about the time factor of getting someone to the hospital fast
(which is why the helicopters are used), minutes/seconds mean much more
for severely injured people than for the average walk-in.

We used to play Ultimate on the park field right across the street,
there were 2-3 copters they had, and often times one would be hovering
(right above us, kinda scary) waiting for another to land or take off,
right in the middle of a dense area (Medical Center). They launched
very quickly in various directions (wind sometimes an issue), minimal
run-up (sometimes left running) and that sort of thing. I always
marveled that there had not been a crash into the building. One Sunday
aft there was a big car crash on a freeway somewhere, 6 or 7 people hurt
very badly, they were running in and out of there almost without landing
on the roof (though they actually did, but it was like a 30 sec
turnaround), one hovering and waiting for the other to leave. We all
remarked on that activity. Some of our guys were docs there, they
filled us in the next week, and my neighbor told me about it too

Good for you.
All i have ever used is a crapsman 5/16 x 8" screwdriver to squeeze

My indy has a 1978 300D that someone just traded in on a newer 300E. So, I
have some questions. The body is in really good shape, it was a one owner car
that spent 29 or the last 30 years in Austin. They moved here last year. It
has what I guess are old style glow plugs - each one is connected with this old
looking wire that is sort of squiggly. The a/c works, but it has no sunroof.
No rust. The driver's seat is pretty flat. It has 245,000 miles. The heater
does not work and there is something called the heater box, unplugged under the
hood.

What kind of fuel mileage will these get?

Are they complete dogs with no turbo?

What is the heater box problem all about?

I can trade him for my Volvo for $1000 (I think I can get him down to $700).

Anyone want to buy a really nice 1990 Volvo 240? $2300

Yes, I have, actually. Probably the best combination of low-windage,

Re: [MBZ] Brake Pad Question

2008-10-16 Thread Zoltan Finks
Huh. Very cool. A little drum brake inside the rotor. I will look for
that. Yes, the guy at Autozone said the tool was needed because of a
ratchet or gear setup that is actuated by E brake cable. If I dont
have that, then thats great.
I was told I am renting the tool, and the $55 is a deposit. But
essentially I bought it. All I know is they had better refund my money
like they promised.

Wonder though, how do I adjust the E brake so it will be more
effective. As it is now, you pull the handle just about all the way
and it almost does the job.

Watch the vid, you can find it on youtube. Basically Joe asked about
the 250k thing and taxes, said he wanted to buy a business and grow it,
would get into that bracket, a few words were spoken on that regarding
those who work and those who don't, then Barry said, "we need to spread
the wealth around." Wealth redistribution, Marxism pure and simple.

Third, even if you're one of the rare business owners making enough money to
be affected by Obama's proposed tax increases, you still won't see a big
hike in your tax bill.* *

McCain's claim that Obama "will increase taxes on 50% of small business
revenue" - the line he used in the second presidential debate - is incorrect
because of how income is taxed.

If a business owner falls into the top bracket, that doesn't mean that all
of his or her income is taxed at the highest level.

For example: If a small-business owner makes $210,000 in taxable income, he
edges into the 33% bracket, one of the two top tax rates that Obama would
like to raise.

But he would pay the higher tax only on the amount that exceeds the cutoff -
in 2007, the two top tax rates applied to single filers with income of
$160,850 or more and joint filers with income of at least $195,850. As a
single filer, this business owner would see his federal taxes increase
$1,475 under Obama's plan, which calls for raising the 33% tax rate to 36%.
"While Obama does favor raising the top two rates, the quote is not true
because not all the small business income of those in the top two rates is
taxed at the 33% and 35% rates," said Gerald Prante, a senior economist at
the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.

The bottom line: McCain's claim only works by using an overly broad
definition of what counts as a "small business" - and even with that
definition, fewer than 2% of business owners would be hit by Obama's
proposed rate increase. For those who are affected, the increase would be
levied only on a part of their earnings, not all of them.

They fly what are pretty much standard Coast Guard SAR missions-- except
they are flying in places where there is lots of stuff to bump in to, rather
than over water.

Why so many in one year? The same reason that the USCG goes for several
years without an aircraft accident, and then suddenly someone smacks one
into a cliff or plunks one down into the water: the luck of the draw
complicated by a pilot pushing the limits one time too many.

I read something recently about the cause being related to a shortage of
night vision goggles, but have trouble believing that is a significant
contributing factor.

My 79 TD is non-turbo, it moves at a stately pace, you just need to
think ahead a bit on merging up hill on the freeway. Other than that it
is fine, just no speed demon. It will run all day flat out, which seems
to be maybe 85 or so? Use the throttle as an on/off switch most of the
time. Last time I really looked, low 20s seemed reasonable. 245k is
just getting broken in.

Re: [MBZ] OT Farm/orchard/winery sale

2008-10-16 Thread Loren Faeth
I expect it to sell between $2000 and $8000 per acre. I am not being
flippant. The market is strange right now. One farm real estate
specialist I spoke with yesterday said prices are steady. About 10
days ago a farm sold for $8000 an acre, with probably similar soil
types, but without the specialty crops or buildings. Other land
sells for 2300 and acre. It is worth just over the top price of the
second highest bidder thinks it is worth.

Loren Faeth wrote:

How often do you have an opportunity to buy a COMPLETE historic district?

This sale includes the entire Faeth Farmstead Historic District. Most of
it is in tract 1, with a small piece in tract 2. It is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. This land has been in the family
since 1832, and is the oldest orchard West of the Mississippi, and just
a few miles from the site of the first land grant west of the
Mississippi and North of the Des Moines River, a grant to Louis Honore
Tesson from the King of France, in the 1700s. Tesson established the
first orchard west of the Mississippi here, long before the Louisiana
Purchase. There is a lot of history here.

This is an ideal site for any Horticultural crop, including orchard,
vineyards and vegetable crops, as well as land for row crops. Complete
truck farm equipment will be on the sale. This was one of Iowa's 54
licensed Native Wineries. Iowa has a long history of grape and wine
production up until WWII when the government directed row crop farming
for the war effort. There is a new Renaissance of wineries and grape
production in Iowa. Our juice and retail building is an ideal building
for a winery.

Both of the listed JD tractors have had recent major overhaul by JD
mechanics. the 1530 probably has about 200 hr since the OH and the 2020
I believe is under 100 hr since the OH and also has new rear tires. The
1530 was purchased new in 1974, and was assembled at the Mannheim Works
in Germany. The 2020 is a 1968 and we purchased it in 1971, Both are
really good tractors.

If you have any questions, please ask. Loren Faeth may be reached at

Outside the auction Loren has for sale my JD5500N low/narrow
orchard/vineyard tractor. It is a great tractor. It has a 4cyl
turbodiesel I think the engine HP is 80. Transmission is 3 x 4 12 speed
with forward/reverse shuttle. PTO is 540 Rpm with std and economy
setting. It pulls our NW430 Bean sprayer (30 GPM Bean Royal pump) very
easily. It has low hours. It has a cab, so makes a good mowing or
spraying tractor. Fuel consumption is half that of the Massey or other
JD tractors w/o turbo and economy PTO. There are two remote Hyd, with
Pioneer couplings, and a third live line that I believe was used for a
hydraulic motor edger on a mower. It is Mechanical FWD. This is a nice
unit! I purchased it with a home equity loan on my house, so I need to
sell it, since I no longer have a use for it.

After the dust settles, I will be selling my 87 300TD, and 80 240D
manual. For sale now is my 300SDL, 1987.

If the heirs don't want to play nice and share it with each other, and none of
them want to buy the others out, it gets sold.

One way around it is to incorporate the family farm and leave shares of stock to
your heirs. After a while, the increased value of the land serves as sort of a
poison pill to prevent sale of the land, because the profit gets taxed at the
corporate tax rates if they sell it.

Historically, revenues go up following tax cuts. Sounds contradictory
at first but the economic growth more than offsets the lower tax rates.
This has happened time and time again. The treasury is taking in more
money than ever. What we need to do is cut spending.

It will get low 20's maybe 21-23. Not really too doggy I dont think. A
little quicker off the line than the turbo version up till the point the
turbo would kick in. Heater box is probably talking about the acc
servo. Figure at least 6-700 to fix that either via replacement or
swapping in that electronic converstion deal.

has what I guess are old style glow plugs - each one is connected with this old
looking wire that is sort of squiggly.

I can trade him for my Volvo for $1000 (I think I can get him down to $700).

criticism (usually based on a candidate's voting record) with "That's not what
it says on the candidate's web page".

The best comment I've heard recently:
"When I want to know what sort of critter has walked by, I look at his tracks"
Obama's tracks are quite clear, and they don't look at all like his promises.

Watch the vid, you can find it on youtube. Basically Joe asked about

would get into that bracket, a few words were spoken on that regarding

What does the little knob that you turn on the dash below the cluster near the

them had that - both were newer 82, 84.)

part of my compensation package, take them away and I'm looking to have you

why the hell are they selling the family farm? Such a shame.

If the heirs don't want to play nice and share it with each other, and
none of them want to buy the others out, it gets sold.

One way around it is to incorporate the family farm and leave shares of
stock to your heirs. After a while, the increased value of the land
serves as sort of a poison pill to prevent sale of the land, because the
profit gets taxed at the corporate tax rates if they sell it.

Here's an analysis of the last year of the Clinton administration

look like Clinton's last year's rates. It's projected at three
income levels Draw your own conclusions! And please do so

It'll be 'sharing the wealth', for 'Bama is more socialist than

The way I heard it (may need confirmation) is that Barry wants all
the Bush tax cuts to expire, then he "won't raise taxes" beyond
that level we paid under Clinton. That would mean losing the
retirement saver's credit for low income households, the 100%
deduction on health insurance for the self employed, the $1000
child tax credit, the additional child tax credit, the ?121 home
sale profit exclusion, the 10% tax bracket, the reduced tax rates
on capital gains and qualified dividends, ...
