Re: [MBZ] OT: Is Barack Obama a US Citizen?

2008-10-18 Thread Gary Hurst
we have something in this country called "rule of law" (as opposed to your
country where you let foreign nations kidnap your citizens because they say
things that offend the german government). states are sovereign entities
here that enter into a voluntary union with other states. the traditional
understanding is that these states can leave the union just as they entered
it.

a young man joins a gang and then realizes that the gang is not really the
best course of action. so he leaves the gangs, only to be hunted down and
murdered by other members for leaving. when we hear a story like this, we
recoil in horror at this behavior as it violates so many of our ideals
regarding law and morality. it is barbarism and it is unacceptable.

yet, when a president engages in such a deranged murderous orgy on a large
scale, we declare him a national hero rather than denounce him as the sick
rogue he is.

2008-10-18 Thread Hendrik & Fay
OK lets look at Lincoln, it's been a while since I studied the civil war
but to simplify it, Lincoln had three choices, one appease the
separatists and let the south keep slavery in place, two let the union
break apart (thus the US would be split in two and may well have taken
different sides in the European civil wars, leading to all sorts of
complication, perhaps even delaying the American civil war until such a
time when military technology had progressed but tactics had not) or
option three, stand up to the separatists.
I don't what your thoughts are on what should have happened but I feel
that it was pretty much inevitable that there was going to be a war,
whether over slavery or other issues. Lincoln knew this and figured on
the balance of things it is better to take a stand in the beginning,
rather than slowly retreat on issues until such time that further
retreat is not an option.

Re: [MBZ] B-29

2008-10-18 Thread Peter Frederick
Actually, they were on the way when the war ended -- my father was in
Florida waiting for the ship to load ground crew and supplies, planes
to follow in a couple weeks to England when VE day came along.
Another month or so and B-29s would have replaced the B-24s and B-17s.

...Dad was a flight engineer on a B-29 based on Guam and Tinian

cameras and

there were only two operable turrets and a tail gun...

The Museum of Flight's B-29 has four turrets, two on top and two
on the

belly. Plus the tail gunner. All four fuselage turrets can be fired
simultaneously
by one gunner and they are configured so as not to able to shoot the
vertical
fin off or each other. One of the restored and functioning top
turrets is
mounted on a test stand and connected to a test board as is the
master

gunsight
and so by holding the sight in two hands and sighting through, the
turret

rotates and the guns elevate.

This airplane flew 29 missions over Germany and before the Museum
acquired
it, it sat out in the desert at China Lake CA which resulted in so
much
corrosion in the wings that it will never fly again. But, when
finished,

everything
will be operational except the engines. All the electrics, all the
guns

turrets,
whatever.

While stored, some idiot decided to move it by pushing it with a
bulldozer
and in doing so destroyed the tail gunner's compartment. My friend
SJB (a

at the Museum and an Aeronautical engineer) took on the task of
recreating

the entire tail gunner's compartment including the gun carriage, the
electrics,
the pressurized compartment for the gunner and even the hinged
pressure

door
for access. And he did this out of thin air, working from the
original

Boeing
drawings. It is now complete and functional but has yet to be
installed.

This
took five years, not steadily of course.

His next task is recreating the belly radome which was removed and

discarded
long ago when the plane was used as a duster (believe it or not)
so back

to
the drawings. The dome will be roughly about seven feet long, four
feet

deep

and
three feet wide. He has built a female plywood tool with graduated
height
plywood stations to duplicate the curve of the dome from the
drawings but

the
problem now is curving the Hexcel material to the inside of the
tool's

surface
and bonding it all together.

Everyone working on this airplane is a volunteer and a few were WW2

crewmen
so the question to me was, will the restoration be completed
before they

are

all gone?

BTW, my friend SJB is the person who permitted me to help in three
auto
restorations which took fifteen years. The first, a '64 Porsche
904GTS

restored to
perfection finally went to a private collection in Osaka, the
second was a

'73
911RS now in some Microsofter's garage keeping his RSR company.
The last

was
his '56 356A Normal Speedster which they are keeping and drive
sparingly

to
keep it as perfect as possible. At the completion of the
Speedster, the

B-29
project popped up so no more car restorations. His money, my time,

Once the rod bends, the cylinder wears oval in a matter of hours.
They bend in normal service with no prior indications of any kind --
there are three or more versions, and the latest ones weigh several
ounces more than the originals. That means, of course, if you are
fixing one you must buy all six, as the old ones are NOT available.
Usual first indication is a noisy engine and sudden high oil
consumption, sometimes accompanied by significant oil smoke. This
happens from one day to the next, not gradually.

Very expensive "oops", and MB, to the best of my knowledge, has never
admitted to a design error.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 35, Issue 110

2008-10-18 Thread Peter Frederick
Actually, the oil consumption and head temperature problem (later
fixed) was due to the mis-calculation of the air flow through the
engine. The oil cooler was up front, on top, and caused inadequate
cooling air flow over the top three jugs. Wouldn't have been a
problem if there had been a couple inches more distance between the
two banks, but as the Army bought the engine "off the drawing board"
in the same manner they bought the B-29, the engines were well into
production before testing revealed the cooling problem.

After the war, Wright re-did the engineering and found that 2 or 3
inches more space would have prevented almost all the problem, as
would having the oil cooler placed differently. In service, some
extra ducting and some improvements in oil during the war extended
the tear down time from 24 hrs (for the top three jugs) to 200 or
so, much longer later. A 24 hour service life for B-29s operating in
China meant, of course, all four engines had to be torn down each
mission.

Just goes to show what "hurry up" can do for you.

Anyway he got the US through the war and coming out way on top, do you
think Bush would have played the game as well. No he would have sent US
troops to fight in Russia, would have rushed the invasion of Europe

That's easy.

Ms. Palin is a very good example of a number of people I've met over
the years (often of the non-denomiational variety, but hardly
exclusively) who simply cannot differentiate the notion of public
service from their concept of personal existence. Not a full blown
sociopath, but simply do not understand the concept that other's have
any real existence at all, or that their actions might be in conflict
with someone else's beliefs and that others might have a right to
disagree or be correct in that disagreement.

As stated by an Alaskan newspaper reporter, when he asked a fellow
political reporter if Palin had trouble with determining the
difference between her official duties and her personal life, got the
answer, "you don't understand -- for her there there IS no
difference". She is very sharp at discerning a way to make a
distinction difference between herself and someone else, but there is
no philosophical or ideological basis for that distinction, she will
use whatever works and blithely discard it when it no longer works and
simply refuse to acknowledge that she had any particular stance or
made any particular statement. She operates solely on pure personal
loyalty, and has been known to savage "friends", political or
personal, who fail to support her unquestioningly, especially when
she makes one of her about-faces on policy.

I've taught some University classes, and you run across this type
pretty often. They are both male and female, appear quite bright, but
usually only memorize words and word patterns. They are quite good at
memorizing scripts, but have serious difficulties with synthesis (that
is, understanding a concept and evaluating the dynamics of problems,
troubleshooting, or producing solutions to problems that are not
examples in the textbook, as they don't really understand things).
They can appear quite articulate until you carefully analyze what they
are saying, at which point it often becomes either circular logic or
variations upon a set group of catch phrases. A pattern of tossing
out jumbled ideas in conversation is typical, and when you appear to
agree with something partially, that phrase or idea will be modified
to suit what appears to be your interpretation, although what gets
repeated or passed on will not be the same.

A great deal of hot air has been passed around about her intelligence
and perspicacity, but I suspect she just memorizes well, and in fact
is doing a very poor job as Governor of Alaska. Easy state to be
Governor of -- awash in money, with more readily available at any time
by raising oil royalties and taxes. No State income tax, low sales
taxes, no real reliance on the population for financial support, and a
population who doesn't really care what the state government does so
long as it doesn't impinge much on the citizens life much except in
terms of services received. Alaska is the recipient of vastly more
Federal money per capital than any other state, and I've not seen
Palin say anything about that -- I'm sure she would have some nasty
smart-alec comment that other states should just do as good a job at
lobbying as they do.

Very poor choice for a Governor, let alone President.

Senate Democrats jumped on that as a means to set the precedent that the Senate
gets to retroactively declare someone to be a natural born citizen. Perhaps in
case they want to do it again with Obama?

http://leahy.senate.gov/press/200804/041008c.html

The difference here is that the law already clearly stated that McCain was a
citizen at birth, and there is still room for doubt with Obama/Soetoro/whatever
his last name is. Both McCain's parents were lifetime citizens, both had reached
the age of 19, and both were lifetime residents. Even if they weren't overseas
on military assignment, their son would have been a citizen.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Is Barack Obama a US Citizen? Karl Rove said it best ...

2008-10-18 Thread Bill R
I think that Karl Rove said it best a few months ago when discussing
possible short list candidates for Obama [and I only watched it once, so if
you want the exact wording you will need to find it yourself. It was a video
of Rove talking posted on u-tube, an excerpt of a clip shown on the Colbert
Report]: "To nominate a candidate who has been mayor of such a small town,
the 104th largest city in the United States ... can only be a political
stunt..." In fairness to Rove he was talking about a Democrat who was mayor
of a town of 200,000 rather than a Republican who had been mayor of a town
of 9,000, and then each was also elected governor of a state. I'm sure
Rove's political assessment only applied to Democrats though, and he would
now state that Palin was well qualified having served as a mayor of a town
of 9,000 as well as a governor.

Why is Sarah less qualified than other governor candidates, say Bill Clinton
or Jimmy Carter? Categorically, I would think someone with executive
experience would be more qualified to be president than someone who only has
experience as a member of a committee.

Re: [MBZ] which old airplane?

2008-10-18 Thread Peter Frederick

Yeah, I understand that.

My father was working on B-29s during the "Battle of Kansas" where
the Army worked like crazy to turn them from junkers into fighting
aircraft. He spent a lot of time on the gun control system, which
started him off on his carrer in electrical engineering, designing
automated control systems.

I'd love to be able to walk through that B-29 with him!. Sadly, he's
been gone since 1976, when I was too young to really appreciate him.

We used to walk through the B-29 fuselage at the museum at Wright
Patterson AFB when I was a kid and get an earful about the
airplane. I wish I could do it with him one more time.

...B-17 - fast??? Large? Heavy? Yeah, I know -

it's all relative and for

its
"time."

That was a wrong guess. As I posted earlier today, it's
the B-29. And it's
significant because of the Enola Gay.

I spent two hours last week with a friend getting the VIP
tour of Boeing's
restored and airworthy B-17 and Seattle's Museum of
Flight's B-29. I learned a
lot.

the marx brothers will come back once intelligent members of a new

that in a nation that seeks to suppress more and more liberties every day
with a population that largely encourages the government to do so, many will
discover anarchic comedies as a release (sort of like happy musicals during

Either the rods bend in service or they don't. No way to tell by
looking, all you get is suddenly seriously increasing oil consumption and
soon loose piston noise as the cylinder wears oval from the twisted rod.

The 3.0L 603 will also bend rods, but I believe that is usually a bad
head gasket allowing oil into #1 from the chain tensioner oil passage
across the front. Eventually it will hydrolock and bend the #1 rod.
There is some speculation that glassy carbon from the crossover pipe can
do the same thing.

given it "lack of security" -- at times like this, it's easy to see how
little security there is working for others.

the shift points are controlled by the control pressure cable. Maybe
its sticking. The kickdown solenoid might also be sticking. One
other thing to check to see if some carpeting got caught under the

We went for a ride and sure enough, it's shifting at ~4200rpm
regardless of throttle position. As we came home it started working
properly again - kind of - wasn't shifting at late as before - It did
this before when the little vacuum hose on the upper side of the vac

2008-10-18 Thread LarryT

They're not listening to logic Kaleb, they've been blinded by the hype.

No matter he has no management experience to speak of, no matter his mentor
of the last 20 years is an anti-american who weekly (and probably more
often) preached hatred and pro socialist values, he used legal maneuvurings
to have his competition removed from the ticket to win a seat on the Ill
Senate, was friends with an avowed terrorist who conspired to blow up public
buildings and kill people and shortly after 9/11 said he'd do it again and
hopefully do more, believe babies born alive should not be allowed to remain
alive, "says" he is pro 2nd Amend but has repeatedly voted *for* further
restrictions or total elimination of guns from the hands of law abiding
citizens, believes illegal aliens should have drivers licenses as well as
receive free healthcare and public education.

That's why I cannot support him. Not crazy about mccain - because he;s a
democrat - but obama is a socialist which I believe is worse.

Excellent description, Peter.

Also, Alaska has the population of a mid-sized city - 670,000. With so
much money that they give our tax money to there citizens every year
-- and continue to accept pork money to re-distribute to Alaskans. Now
there's a good model of fiscal responsibility with public money.

That's easy.

Ms. Palin is a very good example of a number of people I've met over the
years (often of the non-denomiational variety, but hardly exclusively)
who simply cannot differentiate the notion of public service from their
concept of personal existence. Not a full blown sociopath, but simply do
not understand the concept that other's have any real existence at all,
or that their actions might be in conflict with someone else's beliefs
and that others might have a right to disagree or be correct in that
disagreement.

As stated by an Alaskan newspaper reporter, when he asked a fellow
political reporter if Palin had trouble with determining the difference
between her official duties and her personal life, got the answer, "you
don't understand -- for her there there IS no difference". She is very
sharp at discerning a way to make a distinction difference between
herself and someone else, but there is no philosophical or ideological
basis for that distinction, she will use whatever works and blithely
discard it when it no longer works and simply refuse to acknowledge that
she had any particular stance or made any particular statement. She
operates solely on pure personal loyalty, and has been known to savage
"friends", political or personal, who fail to support her
unquestioningly, especially when she makes one of her about-faces on
policy.

I've taught some University classes, and you run across this type pretty
often. They are both male and female, appear quite bright, but usually
only memorize words and word patterns. They are quite good at memorizing
scripts, but have serious difficulties with synthesis (that is,
understanding a concept and evaluating the dynamics of problems,
troubleshooting, or producing solutions to problems that are not examples
in the textbook, as they don't really understand things). They can
appear quite articulate until you carefully analyze what they are saying,
at which point it often becomes either circular logic or variations upon
a set group of catch phrases. A pattern of tossing out jumbled ideas in
conversation is typical, and when you appear to agree with something
partially, that phrase or idea will be modified to suit what appears to
be your interpretation, although what gets repeated or passed on will not
be the same.

A great deal of hot air has been passed around about her intelligence and
perspicacity, but I suspect she just memorizes well, and in fact is doing
a very poor job as Governor of Alaska. Easy state to be Governor of --
awash in money, with more readily available at any time by raising oil
royalties and taxes. No State income tax, low sales taxes, no real
reliance on the population for financial support, and a population who
doesn't really care what the state government does so long as it doesn't
impinge much on the citizens life much except in terms of services
received. Alaska is the recipient of vastly more Federal money per
capital than any other state, and I've not seen Palin say anything about
that -- I'm sure she would have some nasty smart-alec comment that other
states should just do as good a job at lobbying as they do.

Very poor choice for a Governor, let alone President.

She is very sharp at discerning a way to make a
distinction difference between herself and someone else, but there is
no philosophical or ideological basis for that distinction, she will
use whatever works and blithely discard it when it no longer works
and simply refuse to acknowledge that she had any particular stance
or made any particular statement. She operates solely on pure
personal loyalty, and has been known to savage "friends", political
or personal, who fail to support her unquestioningly, especially
when she makes one of her about-faces on policy.

I've taught some University classes, and you run across this type
pretty often. They are both male and female, appear quite bright,
but usually only memorize words and word patterns. They are quite
good at memorizing scripts, but have serious difficulties with
synthesis (that is, understanding a concept and evaluating the
dynamics of problems, troubleshooting, or producing solutions to
problems that are not examples in the textbook, as they don't really
understand things). They can appear quite articulate until you
carefully analyze what they are saying, at which point it often
becomes either circular logic or variations upon a set group of catch
phrases. A pattern of tossing out jumbled ideas in conversation is
typical, and when you appear to agree with something partially, that
phrase or idea will be modified to suit what appears to be your
interpretation, although what gets repeated or passed on will not be
the same.

A great deal of hot air has been passed around about her intelligence
and perspicacity, but I suspect she just memorizes well, and in fact
is doing a very poor job as Governor of Alaska. Easy state to be
Governor of -- awash in money, with more readily available at any
time by raising oil royalties and taxes. No State income tax, low
sales taxes, no real reliance on the population for financial
support, and a population who doesn't really care what the state
government does so long as it doesn't impinge much on the citizens
life much except in terms of services received. Alaska is the
recipient of vastly more Federal money per capital than any other
state, and I've not seen Palin say anything about that -- I'm sure
she would have some nasty smart-alec comment that other states
should just do as good a job at lobbying as they do.

Very poor choice for a Governor, let alone President.

Peter

with someone else's beliefs and that others might have a right to
disagree or be correct in that disagreement.

As stated by an Alaskan newspaper reporter, when he asked a fellow
political reporter if Palin had trouble with determining the
difference between her official duties and her personal life, got the
answer, "you don't understand -- for her there there IS no
difference". She is very sharp at discerning a way to make a
distinction difference between herself and someone else, but there is
no philosophical or ideological basis for that distinction, she will
use whatever works and blithely discard it when it no longer works
and simply refuse to acknowledge that she had any particular stance
or made any particular statement.

Why is Sarah less qualified than other governor candidates, say Bill Clinton
or Jimmy Carter? Categorically, I would think someone with executive
experience would be more qualified to be president than someone who only has
experience as a member of a committee.

OK, I'm ing pissed at my email company right now. I've tried
multiple different ways to reply or forward a certain previous email I
sent about a certain presidential candidate's citizenship status, and
it continually is blocked by the email server. This is REALLY pissing
me off Enough to consider calling a lawyer or the state attorney
general for this company. !

The opposition by the Obama team is just a very smart ploy. Waiting until
the best possible time to produce the required document, This will give
them reasons to insist that any other claims or charges against him are
political and will be dismissed as such by the media.
