Sounds like what happened on my old Toyota truck when a rusty brake line finally gave way. Not so much a bang as a sudden loss of brakes. And because it had only one reservoir feeding both circuits, brake fluid was rapidly depleted. I thought MB had a split reservoir, my 300D does, for example. Not sure this explains the grinding. Re: [MBZ] Caravan followup
Hey, the sucker has run more than 70k with NO service. (other than oil changes and tahrs and wiper blades) I really don't relish changing plugs, but now that i know what to take off to get to them, the next time will be a snap. Then there is the better alternative, that I did not even investigate: cutting a hole (or 2 or 3) in the hump under the carpet, and then making a cover for the hole. I think that is probably the best alternative. My 66 ford van had the 240 in the doghouse, and while changing plus was easy, you could not adjust the carb without taking the engine out, or taking the doghouse apart. I took a 2 1/8 holesaw, and cut a hole in the side of the doghouse, then drilled a pilot hole and followed with a 5/8 drill in another spot. Then i could adjust the carb just fine. I made cover plates, and the whole thing looked halfway professional. I think if I had a big cordless drill and a couple of batteries, I could spend an afternoon in the upull, and make a template for future ventures. The first one we had was a 99 with 3.3 engine and it had over 200k miles when it was bit by Bambi the 4th time. This one is a 2000, with 3.3 and is pushing 180k.I will never need to change plugs in it again. I think of it as similar to changing the timing belt on a wabbit Dissel. I forget, its been a busy few days). They call because the car went bang and now the brakes are spongy. FIL and I head over to check it out. That is I did not want to be the one maintaining the car, she could take it to dealer or do what ever she wanted but it was hers. So now I am stuck at the dealership waiting a freaking hour for an oil change. To add insult to injury, I asked them to disable the alarm on the car. They told me that it was impossible to disable to the alarm on the car. Then they asked why in the world would I want to disable the alarm so I told them. Then they were like yeap those are good reasons but it is not possible to disable the alarm as if they did the car would not run. I know right? If my back didn't hurt (over did it with the chainsaw yesterday while I was feeling better) I'd be out there right now pulling the wheel off. The glow plugs glowing in your bus? Yes, but the crank-over speed was just too slow. That battery was a used $12 special bought from the U-Pull in June, 2004. It's too small, naturally, and of unknown vintage. Remember that I had just paid $100 for the car, with no certainty that it was going to work out. I wasn't about to double my expenses before I'd even seen if it would drive. The Group 49 from the pickled 190D should do well, if I can fit it back in. A friend bought an old trailer, and brakes of the same brand as the axles didn't fit, because that manufacturer changed the bolt pattern since the trailer was built. We had to cut off the flanges and weld new ones on in order to put new brakes on the thing (the P.O. removed all the internal brake parts so we needed new brakes). (Problem solved as of yesterday for the most part. Pretend I was writing this Saturday...) The Ranger seems to have a small, maybe 19 gallon gas tank and at 17mpg around town plows through gas pretty good. So we decided to use the 190D instead as it had a full tank of diesel and will do well over 30mpg even around town. Everything was fine until Angie and her Mom went to the store on Saturday (Sunday? I forget, its been a busy few days). They call because the car went bang and now the brakes are spongy. FIL and I head over to check it out. The brakes are basically missing, the right front suspension is all wet and the master cylinder is basically dry. I pick up a quart of brake fluid, fill the master cylinder and head toward home ~10 miles. Theres not much traffic because of the storm (the roads are dry but remember its hard to get gas) and with the manual trans I figure we'll be okay if I take it slow. Every couple minutes I get this horrible grinding/squeaking/squealing noise which lasts for 10-20 seconds and goes away. The sound seems related to ground speed, (ie if I slow down the noise slows down) but the frequency of the sound (ie how often it happens) does not. I figure I'm going to press on until we get home or a wheel falls off. The rear brakes seem to work but it takes nearly all the pedal to get the car stopped, between them, judicious use of the parking brake and downshifting we get home just fine. It was an great example of the team work my wife and I are capable of. I don't have enough hands to work the parking brake, shift, and steer all at the same time (because my feet are busy too) so she works the lever, what a great kid. So I call my Indy, its nasty out and I don't particularly want to be working on this in the driveway but he lives out in the country with trees all around and has no power. He's got a car up on the lift but his generators aren't strong enough to get it back down. My 240D is over there, he says it needs the Ujoint rebuilt in the trans which would explain the vibration I'd been feeling. However that car is broke less than the 190D so we go get it... Snow in the forecast for the rest of the week so the 190D is parked... I'm getting really tired of this... -Curt -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The last winter I owned Hammie the '83 240D before I bought him back this year the battery was failing and we went through this sort of thing almost every day... The tires on the Frankenheap (115 200D) were a little low this morning, but it was so cold in the garage that the air compressor wouldn't start. I took it to work anyway, meaning to run the car to Les Schwab at lunch both to take care of the tire pressure, and to get some heat into the engine so it'd start after work. But work was insane, and I never got out. Mistake. It wouldn't start after work, too cold and the battery too cold/weak/old/small. We had theater tickets, too. Real theater, Sweeny Todd, not the movies, and we couldn't be late. Jill came and got me instead, after shuttling the babysitter herself. After a bloody fun-fest we dropped back by work, and I found that the one tire was now too flat to drive. I changed it while I let the car battery charge off the jumper cables I keep in the trunk. The car wouldn't start then, either. So I charged it again a bit and hooked up the tow rope that I also keep in the trunk. Starting it wasn't easy, it needed third gear and it still wanted to slip, we towed it with the Chicken Wagon. (I glow the car while it gets up to speed, then drop the clutch.) It fired once and ran a few seconds, long enough for me to flash Jill to stop, then it died. We had to repeat the exercise. (She _hates_ this!) Once running solidly it was fine. It's _cold_ outside! 7 degrees F when we got home, but at least it's a lot less windy than yesterday. I have some work to do. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [MBZ] 190D is starrting to piss me off
So because of the ice storm gas is kind of precious, its not that theres a shortage but most gas stations weren't having power. You know folks, this whole thing is getting crazier and crazier. I hear the pols talking about loans for the car companies or they will go bust, which are going to turn into direct subsidies soon to prop up the UAW and all the retirees. Maybe there is a reason why the car companies are going bust? I hear talk of mortgage assistance, or paying peoples' mortgages, or reducing mortgage payments by subsidies or various other govt interventions. I see talk of stimulus packages totaling some trillions of dollars, which seem to be primarily construction projects, which do not really elevate the overall abilities of people doing the work. i.e., increase their education or abilities to compete with the Chinese and Indians and East Europeans.. I hear remaking the energy sector, and killing coal and raising gas prices. I hear remaking the education sector. I hear remaking how people buy cars, with credits and such. I hear remaking the auto industry to build cars that up to now people have not really wanted to buy a lot of. I hear remaking of the health care industry. I hear attacking global warming with various programs, taxes, fees, laws, etc I feel like I have followed Alice down the rabbit hole. --R Wonko the Sane wrote: Trust me, the answer is no. I hear talk of mortgage assistance, or paying peoples' mortgages, or reducing mortgage payments by subsidies or various other govt interventions. Re: [MBZ] Sell Fuel Efficient Cars Act
I can somewhat appreciate the theory behind the plan. My observation (and it is only that) is that folks in that income range tend to own older, less fuel efficient and often highly polluting vehicles (oil-burners). If these POS-style cars can be taken off the road and replaced with more fuel efficient and less polluting vehicles, then that is a good thing. The downside as I see it is that individuals in this economic class, even if they are given $10K credit for the trade-in vehicle, will still not be able to afford payments on a new American (which I assume means Ford, GM or Chevy) car -- if they can even qualify for a loan. [MBZ] 190D madness
God helps them that helps themselves right? By lunch my back was telling me it wasn't okay to sit around all day doing nothing so I pulled the 190D into the driveway. Put the jack under and knew immediately what was wrong, the tire was leaning in about 15 degrees at the top... Jacked it up and the wheel just flopped around. Pulled the bearing cap and yep, outer bearing is toast. I managed to find most of the cage and 2 1/2 rollers... I had to cut the inner part (name for this? The thing that goes on the axle) off the axle, actually I just grooved it with the dremel and whacked it with a chisel (okay a screwdriver) and it came off. I *think* the outer part is stuck in the hub but didn't want to cut it out until I had the replacement bearing in my hand. Local Carquest has the bearings and can *probably* get the seal today, I'll call them back in a couple hours. Brake master cylinder is still full so I think the brake fluid loss was a red herring. I think when the wheel got loose it either: A. Pushed the pistons in the caliper back and shot brake fluid out of the master cylinder through the cap. This theory is backed up by the cap having a tear in it. Will order a new cap from Rusty. or B. My wife using the brakes allowed the pistons to move in which made it look like the brake fluid had gone low... The 190D has what I think is a floating caliper quite unlike the system on the 240D. I'm not sure I can tell the difference when driving. Never the less my relationship with my Indy has now changed. A week ago the car was in there for bearing noise and a slight wander on the highway I thought was related to the wheel bearings in this wheel. He drove it and said the noise was tires and it was fine. Fortunately didn't charge me for the diagnosis. From now on it'll be Bob, change X. I'm not going to ask him to diagnose. -Curt -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [MBZ] 240D lower ball joint diagnosis
Now that I'm diagnosing my own problems (see previous message) I need to know how to tell if the lower ball joint is bad, ideally with information I've already got (I'm basically lazy). When I changed the UCAs the driver's side hub/rotor assembly stayed put when the upper ball joint was removed. I could move it around as needed but when I put it into position it didn't move. Contrast to the passenger side where once the upper ball joint was disconnected the whole assembly flopped around like a fish, I ended up zip tieing the thing the ball joint mounts to to the shock until I had the UCA in place... On the highway the car has a slight wander back and forth, not much but enough to be annoying. Its gotten worse since I've been driving. OK, let me get this straight. If I'm poor, not too hard to prove - I'm a small business owner and the economy sucks right now. And I have a car to trade in - I do, a 1987 Mercedes 300 SDL And I have to trade for a car that gets at least 30 MPG And it has to be American made. Then our leaders will give me a $10,000 check towards the car? Great, I can trade my 300 SDL in on a new Corvette Z06! http://www.chevrolet.com/corvette/ I just need to come up with the rest of the $74.775. Re: [MBZ] 240D lower ball joint diagnosis
To test lower ball joint you lift up the front end and put it on jack stands. Then with a pry bar, pipe, board, etc placed between the ground and botton of the tire apply upward force and look for movement. Tie rods and steering linakage are checked by pulling and pushing at 3 and 9 o'clock. Upper ball joints at 12 and 6 o'clock. Re: [MBZ] 240D lower ball joint diagnosis
Could be anything in the front-end but not likely the lower ball joints. Jack the car up and support the lower control arms on jack stands - The best place to put the stands is as far out on the control arms as they will safely sit. This will take the load off all the suspension parts except for the lower control arm bushings. Now start moving things around, looking for any free play. The worn out part (or parts) should be obvious. My bet is on the idler arm bushing.. Re: [MBZ] 190D madness
WooHoo Curt is brimming with self-confidence! Way to go! At 01:05 PM 12/16/2008, you wrote: God helps them that helps themselves right? I had loads of play money until I bought the pickup and the $~300/mo loan... Wish I'd waited another 6 months and put that $300/mo into the bank and used it for a nicer downpayment (I put down $1500) or bought a cheaper truck, or better yet a car. 9 years later I make way more than I did when I bought the Dakota (not twice but on my way), the Ranger only cost $10k, my student loan is paid off but now I've got a mortgage at $1400 a month... -Curt Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2008 10:28:44 -0700 From: Robert Rentfro rrent...@cox.net Subject: Re: [MBZ] Sell Fuel Efficient Cars Act To: 'Mercedes Discussion List' mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: 000c01c95fa3$bf35eca0$6501a...@familycomp Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Can people who make less then $40K afford a new car? Bwawney Fwank has said he is all for welfare, it is a good thing, he's da man with the plan there. You watch. They also will not be able to afford insurance, property tax, title, and plates on a newer vehicle that is worth more that their older shitbox, so we will need an insurance, tax, title, and plate assistance program for purchasers of UAW-built cars, so that the buyers, who can't afford either the car or the insurance without our assistance, can get a new ride. Or those assisted in the car purchase will just drive around without insurance, so when they crash into us we get to pay the price (see Texas for a great example of this behavior). The cars will be smaller, and anecdotal observations suggest people of the lower socioeconomic brackets do not appear to appreciate seatbelts for themselves or passengers, so when they crash the occupants will suffer worse injuries (those pesky physics again), so we will need to cover their health care or funeral expenses. And they are going to need gas for the car, when the taxes are raised to discourage consumption they will be disproportionately affected so we will need to provide tax credits (or most likely, direct payments) to keep the car on the road. All this welfare monkey business needs to be done away with. It serves to enslave the masses and destroys the capitalist drive for efficient industry. It also allows things that should go extinct to continue sucking the rest of us down. Any welfare, corporate or social needs to stop so that the system can balance again. It will hurt, A WHOLE BUNCH, but in the end will be better for all. No need for millions of new cars on the road. No need for all the new homes nobody can afford. BTDT It was called the Peoples Democratic Socialist Union of Islands In 1989, I made enough money working to barely pay the rent. Job 2 went to buy food and job 3 went to pay other incidentals: stuff the kids needed for school. The newspaper did a report about all the benies available to the folks that inhabited the parks and beaches, (formerly known as homeless) They get free housing, (I was paying $1200/month plus utilities for a 2 br), utilities paid, telephones, free healthcare, and of course, they could not be expected to ride DaBus, like I did, so they were provided with cars. Then they had to be provided insurance, because they were having accidents and were not insured). Of course, the next problem was that they were ENTITLED to get gasoline cards, because they could not afford the gas to run the car. and on and onI think they were debating giving all the freeloaders cell phones in 1989 so it was easier to make drug deals. Those were the cell phones that looked like VeetNam era walkie talkies. (not cheap) The total benies were way more than I was making working my butt off. And I was making about twice what most people were. Now you know part of the reason why I left paradise. Unfortunately paradise has moved to the mainland now, and we are all being subjected to the Central Planning of the politburo. I went to a state college, I was an RA which got my room and board paid for. When I first started and hit President's list I got a nice little grant. My loans were in the 1.somthing% range and as I started paying ahead the bottom was falling out (around 2001) so the rate came all the way down to (IIRC) 1% or something crazy. Then when I was 5 years ahead the government forgave a year for my being such a good payer... My wife's student loan on the other hand... Its something like $250/mo at 3% or so (which is still super low) and we had to pay a fee (which got rolled into the loan) because she deferred her first loan when she went to massage school. Still that should be paid off in '09 which makes it a year early, maybe a year and a half. I saw an ad for the Escallade where it was only $57k... ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com No virus found in this incoming message. Re: [MBZ] Sell Fuel Efficient Cars Act
They will have to buy another one, which will insure UAW worker employment (or job bank benefits) going forward. It's all part of the plan. --R R A Bennell wrote: Don't forget that the new little car will run out of steam about the same time as the payments and the warranty run out. I think this answer will determine what I do when my CPO warranty expires on June, 2011. Maybe the tranny will fail within this time frame!
