Arizona rear plates only. On speed cameras, they take two pics, one
of driver and one of rear plate. I think the frame deal will be
visual by a cop.

That's what Chuck is talking about. Out here it seems every dealer has to

Or, any other type like the ones that say "My other car is a Mooney" or "I

Now when the speeding cameras take your picture they can tack on the extra

Chris,

Wis Loosely translated i.e. Work Information Station.
Like the Old CD's but on Super Steroids.
WIS has a BAD Habit of pulling an ET on you, i.e. it Wants To Phone Home
all the time.

Make sure you disable your network connection before you launch it.

DAS is the Diagnostic Analysis System. It's the system that hooks up to
the Car's Master
Computer. Very powerful piece of software. Has to have an interface
box that goes
between the computer and the car's interface. Interface box is nothing
that the average
owner wants to buy IIRC it's between 5 and 10 grand. On cars that have
the hydraulic

leveling system you and use DAS to set the base ride height.

My Buddy's shop has 2 of these puppies. BMW also has a similar system.

I know my W126 had one, but both W123s ive owned only had the machine screw

I would ago with Mitch's suggestion. A cantenna is really directional, and
might be a PITA to set up. A corner reflector is easy to build out of scrap

Re: [MBZ] Router help

2008-12-23 Thread MG
Well the cantenna probably won't fly. I think that's why she was asking
about a router because that would provide the best option as to
connections and then if anyone else in her trailer wants to buy in to
the connection that would make that easier as well as lower the cost for
all.

The 2 blast barriers are taller then the trailers and a foot thick so
that tends to attenuate the signal quite a bit which is why her laptop
isn't doing too good and she is hoping that a router in her trailer will
have better reception both ways.

For antenna upgrading, a Pringles Cantenna is superb. Might be an
issue with getting it hooked to her internal antenna though.

Using a router as an access point would also solve the issue. She
would want to place it up high as close to the other routers to get
strong signal

No then you probably won't get to the setup that way. If you can tell me
what brand and model and if possible start it up so that you can get to
the setup and tell me what bios it has. Then put the memory in and tell
me what pattern of beeps it does. Sometimes they can tell you a bit
about what is wrong. It may or may not repeat the beep pattern.

I will try that. When you turn this thing on, at the first screen it
tells you to hit f2 to go into setup. With this memory problem, it
 just
beeps and does not show the screen. I did not try hitting f2 anyway

[MBZ] OT memory

2008-12-23 Thread Frederick W Moir

Hi, All.
Anyone need two 256mb memory chips for a Dell Power Edge server? Free
for the asking. KTD-PE2400/256 + Kvm133X72RC3/256. I too buy the wrong memory.
Kaleb. laptops usually have double sided Sdram. On some older laptop
systems there are some chips that only work on one side, so if they
work at all you have half the memory showing up.
A steady 2 sec. interval beep is the memory isn't here/working, also
5 (or so) beeps repeated is also memory conflicts. Which laptop
exactly are you working on? HTH

I will try that. When you turn this thing on, at the first screen it
tells you to hit f2 to go into setup. With this memory problem, it just
beeps and does not show the screen. I did not try hitting f2 anyway though.

Subject: [MBZ] Router help

My daughter asked me about the longest range wireless
router in N. She is at camp Victory and a bunch of the
people got together and bought a used satellite dish
from some of the guys who were coming home. They live
in three trailers with foot thick concrete blast walls
between them. They have two access points on two of
the trailers but since she is the only one in the
third trailer in on the deal there is no router there
and her computer doesn't get the signal. So she wants
to buy a router that she can use when she gets back. I
don't understand how a wireless router will get the
signal when her laptop can¢t but I think it is just
the size of the antenna on the laptop vs. the one on
the router. That would mean I guess that she would
connect her laptop to the router with a cable and use
that or can she just connect to it wireless without a
computer connected to the router with a cable? Anyway
I know there was talk about that on the list a while
back but I didn't pay much attention to it so if any
of you have an opinion I would be happy to pass it on
to her.

Thanks,
Manfred

Re: [MBZ] OT: Battery opinions

2008-12-23 Thread Curt Raymond
I dunno about the JDs but for IH the "kerosene" wasn't what we think of it was
"stove oil" which was somewhere between diesel and gasoline. The trick was to
get the carb hot enough that the kerosene would vaporize adequately. So you
started on gas and just opened the valve to the kerosene tank when the engine
was warm.

The diesel IH tractors had all kinds of block off plates and whatnot that came
into play to change from a gas engine to a diesel. I got to see one belted to a
shingle mill late last summer, it was really cool.

How did the old John Deere tractors run on kerosene after they were started

Old international tractor motors used to have spark plugs and a carb.
They would start cold on gasoline, and switch to diesel once warmed
up

There's all kinds of cool ways of starting oil engines before modern
diesel technology. Especially if you look at old "semi-diesel" hot
bulb engines used on boats.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Battery opinions

2008-12-23 Thread MG
I had an old International I think it was an F14 tricycle tractor. It
was started and warmed up on gas and then the carb was switched to kero
or "lamp oil". It worked because the warm engine would be hot enough to
vaporize the kero and let the sparkplugs ignite the fuel air mixture. No
increase in compression or injection system was needed. Just make sure
you drained the kero out of the cold carb and let it fill with gas
before trying to start it or you would be there till hell froze over or
your arm fell off from cranking it. Then you took the plugs out and
cleaned them and did it right. Always started on the first or second
crank when everything was right. As far as I know all those old bi-fuel
tractors worked that way.

I think most of those engines had some sort of piston in the cylinder
head to raise the compression when switching to diesel/kerosene. So
they're essentially converting from a real gasoline engine to a real
diesel engine by shutting off the gasoline supply and spark while
raising the compression and injecting an oil fuel at the same time.

I love weird old archaic diesel engines... Especially since when you
find one they probably still work! My dad almost bought one of these
tractors. It was weird because if you looked at the engine from one
side it looked exactly like a normal gas motor, and from the other
side it looked exactly like a normal diesel!

His Belarus has a kerosene fueled flame thrower in the intake manifold. Heat

The 2007 John Deere has very fast glow plugs.
The early Dodge/Cummins pickups had electric heating grids in the intake

My 300D is the tail end of the 115 models being a 1976. The earlier cars did
have vent windows, and I wish mine did
too. They are useful things when the AC does not work.

The routine for locking the doors seems a bit much. I think I will just stick
with the key. I have seen aftermarket
kits for remote locking with the key fob type remote. I wouldn't mind trying to
install something like that
perhaps. Don't want to trash my old MB but sure do like the pushbutton lock
setup on my truck. One gets used to it
quickly and does not want to use the key. I find myself wanting to unlock my
house with the remote doodad. There
must be a market for that too.

Simple. With key in hand, close driver's door. Open rear passenger door.
Reach around and push button on driver's door down. Push button on

How did the old John Deere tractors run on kerosene after they were started

Gerry

Old international tractor motors used to have spark plugs and a carb.
They would start cold on gasoline, and switch to diesel once warmed
up

There's all kinds of cool ways of starting oil engines before modern
diesel technology. Especially if you look at old "semi-diesel" hot
bulb engines used on boats.

You want to hand crank a diesel in 0 degree weather?! With
hand powered glow plugs?

How about wind power to generate the electricity to glow the plugs?

How about a little diesel-fired turbine? Surly that could be
used to spin the engine?

Or maybe a fuel cell!

[MBZ] Router help

2008-12-23 Thread M G
Anyway
I know there was talk about that on the list a while
back but I didn't pay much attention to it so if any
of you have an opinion I would be happy to pass it on
to her.

Thanks,
Manfred

My Godfather had a small two wheel one cylinder diesel walk behind
sicklebar mower. You unscrewed a plug on the cylinderhead and inserted a
rolled paper thing about the diameter of a straw and 1" long. !/4" at
the end had some black stuff on it like a match. Then screw the plug
back in and pull the rope starter. POP! Sometimes had to do that twice

Just thought of something. Try hitting F2 repeatedly after you turn it

memory size there. Even if not at least save the new setup and then try
to boot. That may do the trick. I seem to remember that some old laptops

When it's 20 degrees out, one does not need to leave the windows down for
the car to stay at a comfortable temperature, even in the sun. In fact,
having the windows down enough to reach in would probably drop the
temperature to an uncomfortable range and would let blowing snow in.

So, no dog lovers to pounce on him.

COBRA is generally billed at what the employer is charged for your
policy, i.e. if your policy costs $1000 a month, but they are kicking in
$800 and you are paying $200 as an employee, then under COBRA you pay
the full $1000. Also you can only stay on it for a limited time, 6 or
12 months not sure.

I'd check out an individual plan from Anthem. I had family coverage for
under $500 a month. One big caveat, at that price there's no maternity
coverage, so you better be sure you are careful!!

Simple. With key in hand, close driver's door. Open rear passenger door.
Reach around and push button on driver's door down. Push button on

You could always take the easy approach on a 115: just push hard enough on
the wind wing at the front of one of the front windows until you shear the
small pin holding the window to the rotation mechanism. It's fast, but has
more repair effort later. (Then again, knowing how difficult it is to get
weather stripping right, maybe not.)

Homepower did an article about ten years ago claiming that bird kills were not a

LOT of wind turbines to make a county's propeller kills equal the road kill.
Heck, my living room and dining room windows kill at least one bird a year, and
stun many more than they kill.

The question is how many birds die in that region without the wind machines, how
many are killed by the wind machines, and do the additional deaths have any

I just carry a spare key in my wallet. Same goes for house key. That way I
never have to carry a ring of keys around.

The MB keys are nice to put in a wallet if you do the "headless" thing with
them, that is, break or cut off the plastic "head" so all you have is the metal
part. A little tough to turn, but it works all the same and cuts down on the

my other computers the kids use. It says 256k in each slot, 2 slots,
max. Said pc133. I have a whole bunch now and I can only get a
certain 256 stick to work in one slot and a 64 I think in the other.
I cant go the full 512. And it wont use most of the memory I have
even though its 133 etc, just beeps when powered on and will not
boot. What the heck?

I tape a spare key under the front of all my vehicles. I put

"Chrysler won't be able to do that without concessions by major
stakeholders in the company, Cerberus said. The firm highlighted the

Re: [MBZ] Wind

2008-12-23 Thread Rich Thomas
H, have you run that idea past DOE and EPA? I think there are some
slots opening up in those agencies.

Note the statement did not show any preferences regarding wildlife (I
like wildlife and try to live it whenever I can!); rather, that there
are costs associated with any scheme, and the way those costs related to
wind have been dealt with in the past are to give the operators tax
credits. That's the way it was in the 80s, and the way it is today.
Only way the power from wind machines is anywhere near being priced
competitively with other alternatives. Wind is a variable supply source
that is not controllable, and is somewhat intermittent (depends on
location) so shutting down for other reasons just lowers productivity
and raises overall costs. Just physics and economics, nothing to do
with loving wildlife.

Was it last Christmas or New Year that the wind in West Texas and NM
died (in the middle of the windiest time of the year there?) and left
the power providers scrambling to meet demand? There are huge wind
farms out that way, up on ridges and mesas.

Belarus)

I believe that is still the case. Two heating elements, 60-100A each,
very robust. They rarely go bad, unlike Ford's glow plugs. The
engine computer continues to cycle them in a pattern after start
while it warms up. It seems to work pretty well. My truck lost
one of the relays (actually, the drive from the computer seems
to have shorted 'on' so I disconnected it) so I'm only on half
power, but it's still starting down below zero. I give it a couple
of key cycles instead, sound familiar?

Re: [MBZ] Battery options

2008-12-23 Thread Curt Raymond
My 1000w generator finally arrived yesterday, its small, maybe 16"x14"x12". I
bet it could find a  home under the hood of my 240D. Heat for the head and
power for the glowplugs.

I'm liking it! No battery, builtin preheat. Make it water
cooled, have it share the coolant with the big engine, put an
alternator on it so the heater blower or the ham radios could
run

I understand that old Caterpillars had electric start pony
motors that then started the big engine.
