Similar. I believe at high altitude the lower air pressure changes how
the lung functions. It's not only the lack of oxygen. Right?

Could be. The "I'm out of air! Let me breath!!" is a CO2
trigger. So long as there is a gas in the lungs that will
carry the CO2 away, the human is content. There's no
low-oxygen sensor.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Stupid

2009-03-15 Thread drcscruggs
if you are breathing then you are exhaling CO2, then it would not build up in
your body.  The burning you feel when you don't take a breath is the CO2
building up.  The lack of oxygen is what gets you.  If you are in a helium
atmosphere then you would obviously loose the CO2 and not get the oxygen.
Hence you are a goner and not even feel the burning of your lungs.  You would
most likely get a first a little disoriented, which would increase until loss
of consciousness.  Continued oxygen deprivation would lead to the inevitable
conclusion.

The reason one does not die in a closed up house or car is that there is some
exchange of air even in the most well sealed house or auto.  I know a little
more about people than houses or cars tho.  cks

Looks like you can do the 240D for $65-70 delivered. Kleb has the Altimax RT on

Any Audi that old is a rare car because they RUST like crazy.

However, the TD isn't a bad engine (my Volvo has the 6 cylinder 2.4L
version) and other than a fragile aluminum head (sound familiar to OM
603 owners?) they are quite robust.

Probably NOT a blown head gasket, although that's possible -- serious
cracking between the valves is usually the problem. This can be bad
enough that the valve guides come loose and "pump" in the head.
However, the Volvo/Renault/VW head can be welded.

Hi Wilton,
Old houses are interesting. When I was a kid we lived in one in Louisville
that was built during the gaslight era; the gas jets were still in place and
still worked. The walls, and even the inside partitions were so thick,
ductwork was simply slide down inside them when they installed a new furnace
system. The windows all had panelled folding "doors" that apparently took
the place of curtains and blinds. They had been removed and curtain rods
installed before we moved there and they had been put in the attic. They
made great playhouses. There was a cistern in the backyard and a garage
opening on to the alley. Of course, you probably found similar things in
the houses you worked over.

Now that you mention it, someone did say something about a smoke test. One
problem is that the roof was built using prebuilt trusses that make it
nearly impossible to get up there and move around without sticking a foot
through the ceiling drywall. I probably ought to hire it done.

First time I had ever heard of a "widows walk". Is your house by the sea?
Is there a staircase or ladder going up to the widows walk or is it just
decorative?

"A widow's walk (or roofwalk) is a railed rooftop platform, typically on a
coastal house, originally designed to observe vessels at sea. The name comes
from the wives of mariners, who would watch for their spouses' return. In
some instances, the ocean took the lives of the mariners, leaving the women
as widows. The women would often thereafter gaze out to sea wishing beyond
hope that their loved ones would return home and hence the name widow's walk
was born.
Also beyond their use as viewing platforms, they are frequently built around
the chimney of the residence, thus creating an easy access route to the
structure. This allows the residents of the home to pour sand down burning
chimneys in the hope of preventing the house from burning down."

'Sounds like you may have an intake/return leak. I have found several (at
least 3 during the 15 years I inspected domestic systems) with the return
ducts lying COMPLETELY open under houses - ALL the air exiting supply
registers in the house was coming from under the house! I've seen many
others with lesser leaks, of course. We do need to be aware of those
possibilities, understand what happens in the system and try to close those
leaks on BOTH sides of the system. Duct leaks on both sides of the system
do a good job of removing money from our bank accounts and fatten those of
the power companies.

Most heating/cooling system ducts I've seen are VERY poorly installed and
leak like sieves. Most I've seen are assembled very loosely with worthless
"duct" tape that falls off 'bout the time the check to the installer clears,
screws or staples with lotsa leaking cracks. Check the ducts thoroughly and
try to seal them as completely as reasonably possible. Seal leaks with
mastic and/or a VERY good tape (NOT so-called "duct/duck" tape) made
specifically for really sealing ducts - the very sticky, shiny, metallic
tape is usually good for it, and there may be better stuff now. There are
companies who do a pressure (fan door) test of duct systems with aid of
"smoke candles" to find leaks and then work to seal them. 'Been 8 years
since I did an inspection, so I've lost touch with costs, etc.

Re: [MBZ] The 140 is back on the road

2009-03-15 Thread Tom Hargrave
Of the three only the Sumitomo has the correct speed rating for use on a
Mercedes. The Sumitomo is H rated (130 MPH), the other 2 are T rated (118
MPH).

Speed rating is not just about 'speed'. Lower speed rated tires have
sidewalls that are not as stiff and the softer sidewalls affect handling and
in some cases, safety.

The gas was carbide (acetylene?) produced in a little
building a half block away.

Calcium carbide (CaC2) + water (2H2O) =>
 acetylene (C2H2) + calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2).

Guy at work put the RTs on his Jetta last fall, loves 'em.

I can't remember what my 190D has, Contis maybe. I've been reasonably happy and
I think they're something like $60 installed... Had one leak last fall and got
'em to seal it (dismounted the tire, cleaned the rim, remounted with a little
sealant) for free. Might get a set on the 240D, will see what the Tirewarehouse

For the Ranger? If those are 245/75/16, looks like anything decent is going to
be over $100 with freight.

Looks like you can do the 240D for $65-70 delivered. Kleb has the Altimax RT on
a 190D, I put the Altimax HP on my Achieva and Mom's Maiibu for year round use.
I'd avoid the Altimax RT for winter, but you've got studded snows, and the RT
has more treadwear than the HP.

[MBZ] OT - Hot water

In Summer 1945, my 15-year-old brother and I (11) rigged a shower in a small
shed on the farm. 'Put a wash tub (galvanized steel laundry tub) on the
roof, drew water from well nearby with chain/pulley/bucket and filled the
tub in morning up and down a ladder. 'Laid coupla scrap boards on the dirt
floor for us to stand on "in the shower." 'Used a nail to punch holes in a
gallon coffee can and set it over a hole in the roof; 'end of the day water
was hot; he'd go up on the roof and pour hot water into the coffee
can/shower head for me, and I'd pour for him. 'Bet we were the only farm

Re: [MBZ] The 140 is back on the road

2009-03-15 Thread Tom Hargrave
Yes they were H rated. The car needs H rated, not for speed, but for
handling and front tire life.

Going wider on the front of a Mercedes will increase inside & outside tread
wear. This is because of the way the front-end geometry is setup. Mercedes
front ends have a lot of caster. On motorcycles, we call this head angle.

You can see what the aggressive caster angle on a Mercedes has on a tire by
turning the steering wheel all the way to the left then looking at the left
wheel. Not only will the wheel be turned in sharply, it will also be leaned
over quite a bit.

This aggressive lean increases inner and outer tread wear & wider tires will
wear even faster.

Tire rating is determined by chassis design, not engine size. The
gasser W123 would run 125 mph, so yes, a 240 needs H rated tires.

hmmm, how big a job is it to get the head off and back on?

However, the TD isn't a bad engine (my Volvo has the 6 cylinder 2.4L

Probably NOT a blown head gasket, although that's possible -- serious
cracking between the valves is usually the problem. This can be bad
enough that the valve guides come loose and "pump" in the head.
However, the Volvo/Renault/VW head can be welded.

For the Ranger? If those are 245/75/16, looks like anything decent is

Looks like you can do the 240D for $65-70 delivered. Kleb has the
Altimax RT on a 190D, I put the Altimax HP on my Achieva and Mom's
Maiibu for year round use. I'd avoid the Altimax RT for winter, but
you've got studded snows, and the RT has more treadwear than the HP.

a 240D does not need H rated tires, I would think it would need at least
S or T. I know the 201 required S or T, cant remember which. Now my
140 is says it needs H.

Tom Hargrave wrote:

Speed rating is not just about 'speed'. Lower speed rated tires have
sidewalls that are not as stiff and the softer sidewalls affect handling and
in some cases, safety.

I don't think the 240D came with H rated tires, did it?
I assumed they were S rated 175R14, like the 165SR15 on my Saab 99LE.
Going from 175R14 to 195/70R14 should help stability quite a bit anyway.

Ask Kleb how those T rated Generals work on a 190D. I only have
experience with the H rated Generals on a FWD.

[MBZ] speaking of speed ratings

2009-03-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Is there a marking somewhere on tires that tells the speed rating? For
instance, if looking at tires that are currently installed, is there a
way to know what the speed rating is? I think its on there but I have

Re: [MBZ] Audi diesel

2009-03-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
quick story, bought it with bad tranny, broken b2 band. Installed one I
had laying around, went into drive/reverse great, could never get it to
shift past 2nd. Well, wouldnt upshift at all. If you put it in drive,
it would start in 2nd and stay there, if you dropped it down with the
shifter, it would then stay in first. Checked everything, unhooked
kickdown, checked to make sure cable was not stuck, even swapped out the
valve body from the one that was in the tranny that was originally in
the car. No go. So, yanked that tranny out, stick another one I had
laying around. It did the SAME thing. Crap. So I was out in the
driveway one day moving it from forward to reverse, kind if sitting
there with the brakes on and giving it pedal, running it up and down the
driveway. Then, all the sudden, bam, it starts shifting fine. So, I
had been driving it back and forth to work for a couple of months, no
problems at all, shifting just great, very good tranny. Then one friday
I get off the highway, at the end of the exit ramp is a stop light, so
Im stopped. It turns green, I go, SAME THING, wont upshift again. I
have to drive the last 3 miles to work in 2nd. Got it home on the
trailer and messed with it a little bit last weekend, changed the
fluid/filter, same problem. I dont know why it started doing this again
all the sudden. Book says no upshift is either the govenor or shift
valve housing (valve body?).

I know of three issues:

They tend to wear out in 150-200,000 miles.

If the B2 piston or band fails, the car only goes backwards.

If Kleb gets his hands in them, they only work in reverse and second gear.

What about a navigable river? Is there one closer than the coast?

As a frivolous exercise I'm going to calculate how high your
widow's walk would have to be to see the top of the mast of a
typical sailing vessel - presuming no hills in between. *grin*

The formula is d=1.345 x (sqrt h)
where d is the distance in miles
h is the sum of both heights (viewer and viewee) in feet

(100 miles / 1.345)^2 = 5527 feet

A tall sailing vessel could have 200 ft tall masts. That means
your widow's walk only needs to be 5300 feet above the ground!

I'd look for the three character service description.

For instance, this tire is 91H, the 91 is rated 1356lb and the H is 130mph:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Sumitomo&tireModel=HTR+200&partnum=97HR4HTR200

This is rated 91T, (speed rating T) which I believe is 118mph with the same
1356lb load:

if you google it, you'll probably find lots of info on how to read all the
info on the side of a tire, and there's lots. Temp rating, wear rating,
speed rating, origin of manufacture often, as most companies manufacture at
different plants, and also date stamped when produced, which is one to
always keep an eye on when buying new tires too.

You will find a number / letter combo molded into the sidewall. The number
represents the load rating and the letter the speed rating.

For example:
91H would be 91 load rating & H the speed rating.
91S would be 91 load rating & S the speed rating.

You may not be able to drive your 240D over 87 MPH, but tire speed rating
translates directly to sidewall design which affects handling, safety and
tire life.

Re: [MBZ] speaking of speed ratings

2009-03-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well it looks like Im going to spend about $600 on getting new tires for
the 140 and the truck. Probably going to go with the altimax H rated
tires for the 140. I notice on my new suburban I have one tire in the
back that does not match the other 3, anyway, its supposed to be aired
up to 50psi, after about a week, its down to 30. Sprayed it down with
soapy water, it seems to seep air in various spots just in the middle of
the tread. Guess that tire is just old and worn out. So, on the truck,
the 2 back tires are down to the wear bars, but the 2 front tires still
have a little bit left, so I will probably put new tires on the truck,
and transfer to the good tires over to the suburban for now. I would
really just like to get new tires for it as well but will wait a while I
guess. I still need to get new tires for my other 190D but need to do
the shocks. ball joints etc first.

[MBZ] load range

2009-03-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Looking at truck tires, says I need load range E on my truck. Right now
its got 265 75 16's I believe on it. Calls for 245's instead. On
tirerack, when changing to 265 instead of 245, seems the tires are
actually a little cheaper, but dont say they are load range E. Is the
load range have to do with the max PSI of the tire? In the case of my
truck, back tires are aired up to 80. I was not sure of load range was
the weight rating of the tire or how much air it could be blow up with.

In the AZ you never skrimp on tires or try to squeeze an extra few miles out
of them. You will, at the very least, be sweating on the side of the road.

Re: [MBZ] Widows walk -- was OT - Stupid

2009-03-15 Thread Wilton Strickland
Yeah, I thought about doing that, too, but then I finked out. ;<))
Height of the widow's walk is probably about 45 feet; elevation of the lot
is ~110 feet; my eyes are ~ 5' - 6" above my feet. ;<)

BTW, Neuse River coupla miles away used to have barge traffic, etc., MANY
years ago, but that wasn't the reason for this widow's walk. Owner/builder
just liked the Georgian style.

Re: [MBZ] load range

2009-03-15 Thread Tom Hargrave
Load range is the maximum load the tire is designed to carry at the max
pressure marked on the sidewall. But it's not all about air pressure - 2
tires can run the same air pressure & have a different load range.

I know I sound like a broken record but its all about tire sidewall design.
Run a lower load range than you are supposed to, run with a load and your
tire sidewalls will overheat. You can't make up the difference with more
air.

But the W123 chassis also was produced with the 3L TD engine (top

Of the three only the Sumitomo has the correct speed rating for use
on a
Mercedes. The Sumitomo is H rated (130 MPH), the other 2 are T
rated (118

MPH).

Speed rating is not just about 'speed'. Lower speed rated tires have
sidewalls that are not as stiff and the softer sidewalls affect
handling and

in some cases, safety.

Most likely it's a shred of plastic in a check valve or shift valve,
sometimes prevents either governor pressure control or shift valve
movement.

Only cure it to check the operating pressures and diagnose correctly,

Re: [MBZ] Audi diesel

2009-03-15 Thread Peter Frederick
Not too bad -- belt driven OHC, so all you gotta do is take off the
vacuum pump, loosen the belt, and take off the injection pump drive
if its' on the rear (on the VW it's on the main belt).

Then remove valve cover and unscrew the head bolts. I think you can
disconnect the exhaust and pull the head with manifolds (both on the
left side on this one).

Probably NOT a blown head gasket, although that's possible --
serious cracking between the valves is usually the problem. This
can be bad enough that the valve guides come loose and "pump" in
the head. However, the Volvo/Renault/VW head can be welded.

My folks' house is 32' wide, 4 in 12 pitch. The roof rises a bit over 5' in

less the space taken up by the truss. You have to stoop but it's manageable.
If it were 24' wide with 3 in 12 pitch, that would involve crawling on your

Re: [MBZ] OT - Hot water

2009-03-15 Thread Archer

From: Wilton Strickland
'Bet we were the only farm
boys for miles around who were getting hot showers at the end of the day.
Wilton

That was pretty clever; an early solar energy heater. It's too bad modern
kids don't have to improvise like you and your brother did.

This was the 1940s too but I was a city kid. Parents had sold home in a
small town in Indiana and bought one in Tampa. Florida which had a bathtub
but not a shower. Few people in Tampa had showers back then since most
lived in older houses and bathed in bathtubs (or washtubs if they were
poor), but I wanted a "modern" shower.
I built a shower curtain frame out of half inch galvanized pipe and put
it around the tub which was in the corner. The plaster wall was protected
with painted tempered masonite. I took off the bathtub water spout, put on
a galvanized "T" fitting, screwed the water spout on it, ran half inch pipe
up the wall, put on an elbow, a short piece of horizontal pipe, another
elbow, and a shower head. A big cork pushed into the bathtub spout turned
it into a shower bath, and with the cork removed, it was a usable bathtub
again.
A few days later we heard my father cussing in the bathroom. As usual, he
was leaning over the tub, running the water for his Saturday night bath, but
the water was coming down on his head; not in the tub. I had forgotten to
take the cork out. Over time my mother and several visiting relatives also
got "showered" that way. I could never remember to take out the cork. In
that respect I suppose they were happy when I went off to college.

Similar. I believe at high altitude the lower air pressure changes how
the lung functions. It's not only the lack of oxygen. Right?

Could be. The "I'm out of air! Let me breath!!" is a CO2

carry the CO2 away, the human is content. There's no

[MBZ] Stuck in 3rd.

2009-03-15 Thread Russ Williams

The Manual Tranny on My 240D hung up in 3rd Friday
afternoon. Went to my buddies shop and put it on the rack.
Thinking that one of the shift arms had come a loose.
The way my lucks been going lately it couldn't be something
that simple. And I was right. The tranny has something locked
internally. G
Time to make a run to the German Bone Yard Monday. There is a 240D
with a rod thru the block that has a Manual Tranny. Just hope
it hasn't been sent to the crusher yet.
In case it has Kaleb do you have one and how much you want for it.

Re: [MBZ] load range

2009-03-15 Thread Jim Cathey
Looking at truck tires, says I need load range E on my truck. Right
now its got 265 75 16's I believe on it. Calls for 245's instead. On
tirerack, when changing to 265 instead of 245, seems the tires are
actually a little cheaper, but dont say they are load range E. Is the
load range have to do with the max PSI of the tire? In the case of my
truck, back tires are aired up to 80. I was not sure of load range
was the weight rating of the tire or how much air it could be blow up
with.

The D's I (mistakenly had) put on my truck were rated to 65 PSI,
and had nearly the same weight rating as the E's I'd thought I
was getting. After the catastrophic tire failure last summer, while
loaded, I had E's put on. E's are what my dad insists on having
on his truck, and what I thought I had been getting in the first
place. The E's are rated to 80 PSI. E's are also known as 10-ply,
versus the 8-ply D's.

You want to haul ass in your jacked Chevy, D's are great. You
want to haul 1-2 tons of crap in your truck, use E's.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Stupid

2009-03-15 Thread Rich Thomas
A buddy and I were redoing his bathroom and kitchen below, had to take
up the subfloor on bathroom above. Kept telling him to watch out and
only step on joists. he got a brain fart and stepped on the sheetrock,
went through, and landed on his man parts. He rolled around in agony
for sometime and finally got back to work. He had a child some time
later, so I guess he was OK. He learned quickly though.

I walked the length of my parents' house a couple of months ago. 12"
fiberglass batts between prebuilt trusses on 24" centers, with 1/2"
drywall nailed underneath. I put on knee boots and walked on the
trusses. Since I was threading my upper body through the truss
bracing, there wasn't any danger of losing my balance. The fiberglass
popped back up pretty well after I walked on it. Just go slow, don't
stomp (you don't want nail pops in the ceiling paint) and put your
feet on wood, not gypsum. Oh, and wear a coat you don't mind getting
filthy.

Re: [MBZ] Audi diesel

2009-03-15 Thread Jeff Zedic
You guys would die to have the audi diesels we have over here. . I
have an a4 diesel and I would say it is great. Today I returned my
rental car which was a citroen and it was very very fast and fuel
efficient. Very efficient. . My audi does fifty five to sixty mpg and
this citroen was better! What you get there is not as good as what we
have! The current diesels are awesome. . My dream car, he I needed
one, is the CLS 320 cdi. I see it everywhere! DroolZedic

[MBZ] 2004 C230 Kompressor ?

2009-03-15 Thread OK Don
A friends girlfriend is looking at one. Is this the one with the bad spring
perches? Anyone know what to look for? What chassis number is this?
My favorite site for looking up the different chassies, engines, etc. has
gone "off line". Need to find another one.

W210 (E class after W124) is famous for spring perches, I have no idea about the
Cheap Class chassis from this century.

BTW, Don, are you hearing any more Morse code at all, or has it all "dried
up?"

BTW, again, I was so "great" at reading Morse code that when tuning in the
next nav aid station while flying "puddle jumpers" (Cessnas), I'd catch the
fist letter the first time I'd hear the ID, catch the second letter the
second time, third letter the third time, etc. Even then, I wasn't
completely comfortable 'til I heard the voice ID. Awaiting that, I'd turn
the volume up a little to make sure I didn't miss it. Often though, over
Ohio, I think it was, I'd get a shock - a very high-pitched woman's voice
would suddenly shriek LOUDLY in my ear, "Tiverton VOR!!!"

Re: [MBZ] Audi diesel

2009-03-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
well, when I pulled the pan last week to do the filter, there was a
little shard of white plastic on the pan. I dont know what it came off
of. I guess its possible that another small piece of whatever it was
got caught up somewhere. If thats the case, what needs to happen, the
valve body needs to be pulled, will a person be able to see where its at?

Peter Frederick wrote:
Most likely it's a shred of plastic in a check valve or shift valve,

movement.

Only cure it to check the operating pressures and diagnose correctly,
the repair whatever is wrong.
