Bingo. I'm using a Fisher-Paykel washer and a late 1960's vintage

dryer to a $650 washer. That goes double for a $1100 dryer to match

There isn't much work for the dryer to do if you have a modern high
speed washer. If I had to buy a new dryer, it would cost me less than
$400.

Who would restore a Chevette, especially a diesel?
How slow must it be, especially with an auto box?
Who would pay $4000 for it?

2009-04-03 Thread Douglas
Yesterday I jacked the car up and inspected the left side of the
transmission and there was no bolt loose.

Douglas

Douglas -- listen closely -- crawl under your car on the port side, tranny
stern. There will be a bolt with no screwdriver head on it. Slap a pair of
channel locks on it and tighten the bolt. Then happily drive away in
reverse.

I think you had to take something off to get to the bolt but it will be
obvious.

Been there, done that, there was no t-shirt, but my car goes in reverse
now.

You can't fix this with a tranny flush.

Then the MB fluid is the same as Mobil-1 ATF and it was something like
$9.50 a QT. With 16 quarts to fill it. Does this sound about right?

The local autozone had the Mobil 1 ATF though only 12 quarts.

The front loader/horizontal style is supposedly gentler than the upright
style. I've noticed that I get less lint in the drain with my LG than
before with my old upright.

The high speed generally refers to the spin speed, the horizontal
washers tend to spin faster and get more water out of the clothes,
compared to the uprights. The complete wash cycle actually takes longer
than an upright though.

Mine has three spin speeds, the highest being 1000rpm.
In the light duty cycles, like delicate, or perma press, the default spin
speed is 300rpm, and I can manually adjust it up to 600rpm, but if I try to step
it up to 1000rpm it refuses and scolds me with loud beeps. you bleeping moron,
you can't spin delicates at 1000rpm

The way I look at it, by the time you hit 300rpm, the clothes are plastered
solidly against the drum walls, and the only damage you can possibly do by
spinning faster is press wrinkles into the cloth. Said wrinkles should go away
in a tumble dry.

My statement about high speed washers vs drying time was solely in reference to
the fact that spin speeds are getting a lot higher these days, and towels come

Greetings and Salutations, All.
In the mid 60's in the UK, as a present to my hardworking Mom, I
bought a washing machine that heated the water, washed and spun the
clothes before drying them. It was a well made Italian machine,
fairly large, not working or I couldn't have afforded it, and lasted
her 'til her death, about 15 years later. The machine was
pre-computer-in-everything and needed the gi-normous rotary switch
replaced, supplied by the sellers. My cousins scavenged everything
not nailed down after the funeral, so it may still be extant somewhere in Kent!

I think they do, based on my experience. The really big deal is how much less

Granted, I have very soft water, but I have gotten to the point where I use
half of the recommended amount of detergent and stuff still comes out very
clean.

Re: [MBZ] top loading washer

2009-04-03 Thread LWB250

True. The spin speeds are definitely higher than the top loaders, but the
front loaders take longer for a similar cycle.

I think my regular cycle is about 55 minutes long. If I'm doing whites with
bleach (an extra rinse) it can run as high as 75-80 minutes.

The high speed generally refers to the spin speed, the
 horizontal
washers tend to spin faster and get more water out of the
 clothes,
compared to the uprights.  The complete wash cycle
 actually takes longer
 than an upright though.

Yes, but with one device you have to wait to start another load washing

But what happened to the lint?

We bought a Maytag washer / dryer set in about 1981 and it took three

I only replaced a few minor parts. Fixed them myself.
Replaced the Maytags with a new Whirlpool set about 3 or 4 years ago. (Top
loader).
Already replaced a water pump on the Whirlpool washer.

The old Maytag had a lint filter in the middle of the agitator.
That filter collected a real pile of slimy crud from each load.
The new Whirlpool machine has no place to clean out collected lint.
I've always wondered, where does the lint go, now?

I think the point is that lint comes from wear on the clothes. If you have
less wear induced by the washing machine, you have less lint.

I can't believe you are obsessing on combining washers and dryers.

Anyway, such a device did exist about 20 years ago. It was bigger than most
washers and it was a front-loader. My recollection is that it worked
poorly, both for washing and drying, but that it did work.

I think that there IS a new one out, and I suspect that it too will work
poorly.

When I look at my GIANT HE Kenmore washer and dryer, the interior size is
basically the same size and shape, so it does seem like this could be
possible. but I don't think it's gonna happen...

[MBZ] CL Benz manglers

2009-04-03 Thread Alex Chamberlain
I really like dark blue and dark green 126s, and am always kind of
half-seriously looking for one for a project, so I had to respond to
this ad on Portland Craigslist:
http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/cto/1098476919.html

I figured if he's asking $600 and wants it gone by the weekend (in all
caps, even!), I might be able to get it for next to nothing. Plus
it's got Euro headlights which I could flip on eBay for $200 or so,
right?

This is what I got back when I emailed asking for details:

altogether it in alright condition for 250k miles on it. the ign is
broke but it's been that way
since i bought it. the climate control is inop so the center dash is
taken apart. the lower radiator support is pushed in alittle i used it
to push around some stuff at my house.
i haven't taken the time to pull it back out so the fan shroud is
touching the crank pulley.
sounds alittle rough but i'm only selling it because i don't use it
anymore, too many cars

*sigh* I don't think this one's worth it even for the
Euros---although maybe I should be grateful to have found a seller
honest enough to admit he used an S-class as a bulldozer.

I'm sure that could be brought back from the dead. The
euros would be attractive to have, too. You're getting
into Chicken Wagon territory there, but when done a 126
would be a superior ride than a 123. And only $200 more
than the CW was!

That $600 SDL on the coast was surely tempting...

I'm enjoying running around in the SEL. Only the shifting
problem is disturbing. The fact that I spent about $6 to
replace the missing seat belt was nice, I don't think the
PO thought such inexpensive repairs were possible.

Ned, et al.
On the Whirlpool washers that I have serviced for family members, the
lint filter was moved from the RF corner to the outlet hose assy.
During the wash cycle, some small rubber balls in a cone shaped
holder catch the lint and on pump-out it is flushed by the water
being pumped the other way. Clear as mud, I know.

The old Maytag had a lint filter in the middle of the agitator.
That filter collected a real pile of slimy crud from each load.
The new Whirlpool machine has no place to clean out collected lint.
I've always wondered, where does the lint go, now?

Re: [MBZ] CL Benz manglers

2009-04-03 Thread Jim Cathey

Has the wife figured out the SEL?

Yes and no. Daniel threw up in the Chicken Wagon today,
and we needed to go to a rehearsal at church. Since the
CW's carpet was drying she asked if we could take the
white car. OK, sez I. (My preference would have been to
hold off letting her travel in it for another week or so.)

So she gets in. When did this shift knob get all messed
up? I dunno, I reply. Huh. We got all the way to
the church, then she noticed the center console storage tray.
I don't remember this. You wouldn't, I say. Why not?

I just couldn't hold off any longer. Because this _isn't_
the same car. It took a few seconds for that to sink in.
I don't think she's entirely happy, imagine that. I'm sure
that had I intended to I could have kept the ruse going much
longer than this. But the danger is that she'd put diesel
in it the first time she took it out.

$6?? Why so much ;))

Because I had to buy _two_ seat belts at the U-Pull. One
from a newer 190D that had the explosive tensioner, and
one from an older 126 that had the right shoulder mounting
bolts. :-)
