Racor separator has been trumped up by the Diesel car and pickup folks
for 30 years. It is ok, but you still need a good filter behind it.

A Stanadyne(RoosaMaster)(John Deere) filter ahead of the standard
filter is a good thing. These are the rectangular, glass bowl filters
or filter/separator units. They are easy to install on any type of
Diesel. The great thing about them is that you can see what is in the
filter. If you can't see the filter, you know you need to change
it. If you install one, put in a new filter in the OE filter also,
then you change the see-thru as needed, and change the OE every 5
years or so. The see-thru filter will catch more than the OE filter.
I ran my 200D with this setup for years.

I thought the OM636 was the later design; I guess I was wrong.

We had a '64 190Dc, but I don't recall what engine it had in it.

OK, so I just looked it up in my old Chilton's:

Model Chassis Engine Model Engine Type

190Dc 110.110 OM621.III 621.912

200D 110.110 OM621.VIII621.918

So it is the OM621 you want.

I have never had to clean a tank after use of biocide.

Use Stanadyne Biocide. It is made for injection systems.
Follow the label instructions for "shock treatment"
carry an extra filter
Drive on

Continue to dose the fuel at the preventative treatment rate through
the summer.
Give it at lease one treatment each year when it gets hot outside.
Algae likes warm weather. It grows best like tomatoes = over 80 degrees.

Re: [MBZ] black goo in fuel

2009-07-17 Thread Peter Frederick
Note the filter particle size removal specs when installing those
filters -- some of them will pass anything smaller than 5 micron,
which is too large. Some years back I did some research work on
determining why a skid loader Detroit engine failed so quickly after
a rebuild -- turned out to be silicate dust (most likely clay
particles) going through the filters and injection system and into
the cylinders. Nice layer of fine dusty stuff on the piston crowns,
worn out cylinder walls.

I asked about the filters, since I assumed they WERE using filtered
fuel, turned out their newer equipment had 1 micron filters and they
were having to change them all the time due to fuel starvation.
Their supplier was running open vents on his truck driving on gravel
and dirt roads and filled the fuel up with dust.

A water separator with glass bowl is an excellent idea, since you can
then see if you have water in the fuel (or slime or dirt), but if you
have a fairly coarse filter in there, the main filter could clog
first if you get dirty fuel.

to use it as a "troubleshooting activity" which I thought was lame.

We've got a nice video tripod at work. I might mount a piece of wood on that in
the center of the tarp. I like it, it'll take a lot of that weight and require
a lot less in the way of magnets. I intend to get the magnets by scrapping out

I like it, Curt. May have to use sticks of some sort to prevent
excessive bowing of top sheet and prevent magnets from being pulled
off (convert inward force to downward force)?

I came up with a nice trick to play on geeks running windows.
Particularly good for April 1st:

Do a Ctrl-PrtScn to capture their existing desktop image into the paste buffer.
Paste image into Wordpad.
Save image as BMP overwriting their existing Window's background
(usually in C:\Windows). Rename existing file first just to be nice.
Drag all icons to the lower right corner so that only a single pixel is visible.
Collapse the bottom taskbar. Move to side or top if it blends well
with existing wallpaper.

Desktop looks the same, but nothing works. All desktop icons including
taskbar have been replaced with a static image.
Your mark can use image as guide for putting icons back where they
belong once they figure it out.

Alas, only in the fuel delivered to the filters, not the bottom of
the tank where it permits the growth of nasties. Once that stuff
starts, you must actively kill it, it won't go away on it's own!

Once you get stuff growing in the fuel, the resultant slime will plug
anything, even the lines!

Prevention is the best course of action: don't let the car sit for
long periods of time with stagnant fuel in it. Don't allow water to
collect in the tank (i.e. keep it full of fuel to prevent damp air
exchange as the tank heats and cools with the outside air -- the
water in the air ends up as condensation collecting in the tank as
the air temp drop). Use biocide (or B100) once in a while in hat,
damp weather -- Midwestern summers, for example.

This is a bit dated now, but in college I had one of the only
personal computers in the dorm. It was something of a shared
resource/toy, and one day I flanged up a 'face' program that
mimicked the usual ROM-BASIC interface, except that it just
acted weird. It'd let you type in a program (or so you thought,
but when you typed RUN I forget what it did exactly, but it wasn't
what you thought. When you typed LIST to see what was going on,
it would change the on-screen text to LSIT and then report SYNTAX
ERROR, just like you would get if that's what you'd typed into it
normally. Most of the basic commands were intercepted to do
something a bit odd.

Eventually the victim would figure out that there must have been
a program running and type ^C to break it. The face program had
trapped that, but printed out the same message it would as if it
had broken, and then would go into a _different_ set of antics.
When you LIST-ed it would list something, but not your program and
certainly not itself. Something insulting like a dice-roller or
the like. The only way out was to reset or power-cycle it.

I was particularly proud of LSIT. The fun was seeing how many
times they'd type it before pecking it out one character at a
time and looking at it before hitting RETURN to ensure they
hadn't fat-fingered it. As many as ten, as I recall.

Endless hours of entertainment! Ahhh, college

Re: [MBZ] OT: speeding

2009-07-17 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Not a different planet but a different world, I tried to challenge a
speeding ticket many years ago (120 in a 110 zone) but failed miserably.
The magistrates where sympathetic but had to uphold the law, ended up
costing me more and a couple of points off the license.
Kinda frustrating when you consider some of the sentences handed out for
serious stuff, a few years back there was a case of a young bloke who
grabbed his old man's hand gun (safely stored under bed.not) and
shot a newspaper delivery guy in the face because he thought this fella
had attacked a couple of his girlfriends. The newspaper guy lost an eye
and the young idiot got a suspended sentence. Following a public outcry
the Government appealed the sentence and the shooter got some jail time.

there when the faucet in opened.

I remember being in the shower once when Carolyn started both the dishwasher
and washer about the same time. I got my daily workout trying to survive
too hot or too cold.

I did install a dual waste water system. Black water from toilets, urinal
and kitchen go to the septic plant. Grey water from sinks, shower, tub and
washing machine go into a holding tank and used for irrigation. Lint from
the washer is a problem and I may create a third path for it.

Tank isn't horrible to get out (it's behind the rear seat, not under
the trunk floor) and any DECENT diesel shop can clean it and install
the new screen. Try a better place, goo in diesel fuel is pretty
common. Marine service people are more familiar with the problem due
to more water in the fuel, and can help -- call a barge service if
you are anywhere near a river, etc.

Otherwise call a trucking or truck repair/building service and ask
who they use or recommend.

2009-07-17 Thread ernest breakfield
probably not so helpful with Algae, but depending on what exactly the
goo is, it might not hurt to run several tanks full of straight
BioDiesel through it to help clean out the fuel lines after you have a
different (read: competent) mechanic clean out the tank. of course
anything cleaned out of the fuel lines will likely wind up downstream in
the filters in fairly short order, but that's what filters are for.
basically you'll break the accumulated grunge loose and flush it down to
the filters when you're *expecting* to deal with it instead of having
the grunge showing up randomly later on.

cheers!

3. remove float/level sensor and clean it.
4. pressure wash inside of tank.
5. dry tank.

And scrubbing the dead goo out of the tank is something the mechanic did not
find appealing, nor the prospect of getting negative feedback if he missed some
goo and the customer got stranded with a plugged filter, so he said "can't
clean, must replace". Understandable, but probably not optimal if the customer

Hello Frederick and Wilton

Frederick, you may have identified the real problem. The tensioner is
tensioned by oil pressure and restrained from total relaxation by a
ratchet mechanism. I have read to overhaul timing components, probably
replace chain, between 150,000 miles and 200,000 miles. I have 156,000
miles. cThanks.

Wilton, The car is 1983 230E, a 123 Chassis with Engine 102.980. It's a
rest of world model not imported to or sold in the States by Daimler-Benz.
An individual imported this one after taking delivery in Stuttgart and
driving around Europe for a couple of years. Anything you can tell me or
suggest is helpful.

Best regards to all

Hi, All.
When I picked up my '85 190E, there was the distinct possibility that
the very worn chain would fly off the worn sprocket with unhappy
results. The oil pressure took almost 20 secs. to peg the gauge.
Newchain and sprocket, cleaned out the Tensioner. and it ran very
well, with 2-3 second oil pressure rise, until the trans. died, twice.
Check your chain?
Also used a Rusty approved filter, many after-market filters are sh,
um er poor.

YMMV

Hello Wilton; I'm back !
It seems that from a stone cold overnight wait, it's about 5 seconds from
the time the engine starts until oil pressure is shown on the dash
gauge. During that time the engine makes little metallic tapping and
clicking noises.

Hello Wilton, Curt, Tyler, and any lurkers

Thank all of you for your interest.

Wilton, your time lag seems like mine. You don't apparently have noises,
and I do. The noises are not big except after a real road trip - it seems
as if things really drain dry after a stop when the oil is as hot as it
gets on the highway.

My oil filter has a long bolt through the middle with no pipe, no hole, no
spear, and no o-rings. Bolt has threads on the bottom and accepts a
sealing washer on the top. The filter housing drains essentially dry when
filter removed.

Curt - the noises go away when the oil pressure comes up, for which Gott
sie Dank.

Tyler - I hope to avoid an experience like yours. I'm sure you understand
why. But I do have a spare engine that's supposed to be good with 106K
miles on it.

I have read that one ought to replace the timing components "somewhere
between 150,000 miles and 200,000 miles." I suppose I ought to overhaul
the timing components with my 156,000 miles and strange noises. As best I
can tell, if the timing chain lets go, I'm likely to need that spare
engine.

Do the noises go away as soon as the pressure comes up?

When you first described the problem I figured it was just normal, my 240D
seems slow but on my car its more like 2-3 seconds with no real scary
noises, 5 seconds with noises is wrong.

I don't have any 102 engine experience per-say and apparently the oil
filter arrangement is different than the OM6xx since on those the filter
cap has a big spear down through the filter. The spear has 2 rubber
o-rings and when they get old and hard the pressure is slow to rise. If
you didn't absolutely know the o-rings weren't there I'd still give a
check for them, wipe down the spear thing (assuming your car has one) and
look for grooves near the last 1/4 of the spear, there should be o rings
on them. The o rings do not come with the oil filter, you have to order
them separately.

I had an M110 powered car that made noises like that once. I got my
stethoscope out to see where the noise was coming from, and revved it a
little bit to make the noise louder. Suddenly the motor stopped dead
from 2,000 rpm and a few pounds of aluminum chunks fell onto the ground
under the engine. I sold the car for $200 (twice what I paid) and never
found out what it was... That was my first and last gasoline powered

Re: [MBZ] OT: speeding

2009-07-17 Thread tyler
I think it has to do with how you act and how you approach the
situation. For example, I always file a discovery request for the
officers notes, bring signed affidavits from any passengers with their
complete story, bring relevant photos and maps of the scene/car/etc, and
generally act respectful and professional- and I also generally have a
very good reason for why I was breaking the law (or else I wouldn't have
been doing so- right?). I will also get a new haircut and wear a full
business suit or very nice clothes. The judges are also often very
interested in my scientific research, especially if I was driving
somewhere related to it at the time. The cops generally look unprepared,
unprofessional, and insincere in comparison and the judge can see that.
Generally they don't even remember the exact incident and their notes
don't match their testimony very well.

Twice I've gotten tickets and instead of payment I sent in a copy of the
relevant law highlighted along with a note to explain why my actions
were not legally in violation- and they chose to dismiss the case
without going to trial.

Hello all

I had a similar-sounding problem with my 1983 230E car with 102.980 engine.
Would be running fine, then just stop. After a wait it would start up and go
on like nothing ever happened.

Problem was finally (after several months) traced to the connector at the
distributor end of the green wire. It was breaking up and would break the
circuit at odd times. Repaired connector with Devcon 5 and so far so good.

Fuel had nothing to do with my problem.

Good luck

M102 has a single row chain. You should measure chain stretch, at
least roughly. It may or may not need to be replaced.

If you nee a chain, I have a new chain and tensioner that I will
make you a deal on. Ended up selling the car before I got the new chain in.

Are you using dino oil or M1? M1 might quiet things down some.

As was cited before, be sure to use Knecht or Hengst filters. An
inferior filter could allow oil to drain out, where the OE filter might not.
Your filter is not much bigger than the oil filter on a BMW /5
motorcycle engine, so it does not hold a lot of oil.

What makes that vehicle a camper? It looks like a cargo truck. No windows in
the "camper"/cargo area.

Maybe he means it "could be" a camper?

Re: [MBZ] Will the real expert on oiling system of Engine 102 please stand up? Car Identification

2009-07-17 Thread Robert Bigham
Hello Frederick and Wilton

Frederick, you may have identified the real problem. The tensioner is
tensioned by oil pressure and restrained from total relaxation by a ratchet
mechanism. I have read to overhaul timing components, probably replace chain,
between 150,000 miles and 200,000 miles. I have 156,000 miles. cThanks.

Wilton, The car is 1983 230E, a 123 Chassis with Engine 102.980. It's a rest
of world model not imported to or sold in the States by Daimler-Benz. An
individual imported this one after taking delivery in Stuttgart and driving
around Europe for a couple of years. Anything you can tell me or suggest is
helpful.

Best regards to all

Re: [MBZ] 102 engine oiling, time lag, filters, noises, whatever

2009-07-17 Thread Robert Bigham

Hello Wilton, Curt, Tyler, and any lurkers

Thank all of you for your interest.

Wilton, your time lag seems like mine. You don't apparently have noises, and
I do. The noises are not big except after a real road trip - it seems as if
things really drain dry after a stop when the oil is as hot as it gets on the
highway.

My oil filter has a long bolt through the middle with no pipe, no hole, no
spear, and no o-rings. Bolt has threads on the bottom and accepts a sealing
washer on the top. The filter housing drains essentially dry when filter
removed.

Curt - the noises go away when the oil pressure comes up, for which Gott sie
Dank.

Tyler - I hope to avoid an experience like yours. I'm sure you understand why.
But I do have a spare engine that's supposed to be good with 106K miles on it.

I have read that one ought to replace the timing components "somewhere between
150,000 miles and 200,000 miles." I suppose I ought to overhaul the timing
components with my 156,000 miles and strange noises. As best I can tell, if
the timing chain lets go, I'm likely to need that spare engine.

Best regards to all

For those who were interested, this turned out to be a broken coil
spring on the right strut.

Struts were original and at 115K miles, decided to just put in new
"quick struts" on both sides (strut and spring assembly) rather than try
to replace the spring by itself.

Multi-function relay used for blinker : hazard warning : heated rear

Can you take it apart and fix it? If it's already broken, you can't make

I absolutely disagree with what you're saying. Most judges are
reasonable, and put the burden of proof on the officer, not the
defendant- as is required by law.

The judge also has the power to adjust sentencing to make the
punishment fit the crime. For example, over a year ago in Oregon I
got a ticket for running snow tires out of season. What I was doing
was illegal, and I admitted it to the judge- but pleaded not guilty
(the only option which gets you to court) because it had in fact
snowed a few days earlier, and I had put the tires on just for that
snow storm, and had then been out of town and didn't have time to
change them back. The judge found me guilty, but reduced the fine
to the absolute minimum (from about $150 to like $10).

If you are professional, courteous and reasonable, and don't
contradict the officers testimony (calling him a liar) but instead
explain the circumstances surrounding your actions, most judges
will give you the minimum sentence the law allows them to.
