Re: [MBZ] 500SEL hydro suspension still acting up (or down)
I find it hard to believe that the hydraulic fluid tank is really a pressure reservoir Can't be, it's plastic. Would explode. There also seems to be some disagreement as to whether the system constantly recirculates fluid---in which case the health of the pump would be extremely important--- It must. The pump is four radial pistons. It's always pumping. Oh, and fuel filters can be sintered bronze. Restrictors such as those in the vacuum system, etc. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

That I've done. There is some fluid flow, at both the front and rear bleed valves, and it was clear and free of air bubbles, although not the dangerously high-pressure spray that I was expecting. Unless your trailer is wired for separate brake/turn-signal (most are not), you will need an adapter device 'cause I'm guessing your car does have them separate. The devices is probably just a couple diodes, but I haven't really looked into it. That and some 14 or 16 AWG wire, some heatshrink tubing, and a soldering iron and you could be wired in an hour. If you stuff a bunch of grease into the tubing before assembly and shrinking, you get a quite waterproof joint. Did that on a trailer about 15 years ago. Though its been stored outside for the whole time, the wiring is still fine. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT Watch question
IMO the sweet spot for a decent long-lived watch is $100-200. My Invicta Titanium chronograph cost me something in that range. It has an ETA quartz movement and keeps great time. It needs a battery every 2-3 years, but otherwise is pretty perfect. Titanium is non-allergenic, whereas some people (my son) react badly to leather wristbands as well. Leather bands also wear out in a few years IME. If you really want to spend $500 or more, I would definitely consider something in Titanium. Some may like the heft of a SS watch in the large sizes popular today, but I really appreciate a sturdy watch that weighs substantially less on my wrist. In an automatic, Seiko still has a reputation for durability with low maintenance. If you are looking at an expensive Swiss mechanical movement, bear in mind that the maintenance costs can be considerable. I really like the Seiko Kinetics - I'm on my second one in about 11 years, and this one is 6 years old and gives no indication of quitting any time soon. It is starting to look a little worn, and has begun to irritate my skin, but other than that I love it. I still have the first one; it got dropped one too many times (on a tile floor) and the charging movement doesn't work so smoothly so it needs lots of daily motion to stay charged. The jeweler I took it to recommended it go back to Seiko for an overhaul; maybe someday I'll get around to that. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Mitch Haley Sent: Thursday, January 06, 2011 3:46 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT Watch question Rolf wrote: > I've had 2 Citizen Eco Drives over the last decade. --Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] 500SEL hydro suspension still acting up (or down)
Check for a filter at the base of the reservoir. If you do have one there and it's full of crud, you may not be delivering enough fluid. I would double-check the o-rings on the filter, and apply some gentle air pressure from the back side of the sintered filter to make sure it's allowing fluid through. Could be clogged, and that would account for the low riding issue anyway. So could a stuck pressure relief on the pump, for that matter -- no fluid delivery! You might want to bleed it a bit too -- open a fitting slightly on the front or rear and verify that you get fluid flow while the engine is running. Yesterday I looked at a Tissot priced at $550, which is pretty steep for my budget, but a really nice watch. Black face with black leather band, automatic movement, smooth sweep second hand, date (week day and day of month). Re: [MBZ] cheap hauling
I bought the MB European wiring harness for my wagon, was a bit pricey, and it requires extra lights on the trailer. I guess in Europe and probably lots of other parts of the world the brake light and turn signal light require different filaments. I simply added a second set of lights and ran more wires to light them, but this is impractical if I want to tow someone else's trailer or someone else tow's my boat. I need to make an adapter so that I can at least have brake lights if I tow a different trailer, or maybe get some magnetic base towing lights from HF. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Curt Raymond Sent: Thursday, January 06, 2011 10:35 AM To: Diesel List Subject: Re: [MBZ] cheap hauling Actually My 190D has a trailer hitch and I was thinking of using it to haul the snowmobile trailer. There are times when I want to ride after work and running to my wife's office to get the pickup is a pain in the butt. The snowmobile weighs ~600# so I'd figure around 900# total weight with the trailer, maybe round up to 1000#. The trailhead is about 3 miles away (too far to take the sled on the side of the road) so its not like its a long highway drive. The only thing standing in the way right now is that the car isn't wired for lights, does anybody know of a source for the wiring kit? Autozone was flummoxed. My Ranger came wired for them but on the Dakota I bought a little kit that plugged inline with the taillights. -Curt Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2011 23:04:58 -0500 From: E M To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] cheap hauling - was: H rated and governors Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 I friend was looking at some. I've never really looking into it to be honest. Before the mini-van, when I needed to bring something larger home from HomeDept, I just rented one of their vans by the hour. I do know, one of the questions they always ask here, when applying for insurance, is whether you are going to us your vehicle to tow anything. Trailers also need to be plated here, but I'm sure that applies most places. I'm in the city, so having a trailer, would mean I'd have to store it somewhere. I think once I get the bulk of the things finished around the house, I'll probably go back to renting for the occasional time I'll need to bring something larger home. On a bit of a side note, while we all see Mercedes pulling trailers in Europe on a regular basis, I was told here, that any towing would void the warranty. My car is wy out of warranty, but it might effect your car as it's probably still covered. We felt pretty brave squeezing 95 mph out of that old '76 300D. lol It didn't feel unsafe, but it did feel as thought the car was reminding us, what we were asking of it. Re: [MBZ] Mini
Salesgirl at one of our local BMW shops drivers a Cooper S. Not really much to compare between the old original minis, and what is offered today. I've been in a number of old ones, and while they are great fun, you could never build a car like that today. Not if you plan on selling it in any developed nation anyway. The new ones seem as though they're bolted together quite well. If there is a drawback, they are a small market, and I think most parts are specific to mini, so parts availability are pretty much limited to the dealer, when things start to fail in time. I haven't heard of any real issues with the new ones. I've never really worried about the cost of fuel, as I don't log that many miles to be honest. But with traffic what it is in the city, driving and parking is becoming a real pain. The mini and W212 are on my short list when it becomes time to replace the mini van in 2-3 years. Re: [MBZ] diesel pop tester
I bought one from these guys: http://www.mercedessource.com/ Yes you could make one also. But its easy to just buy theirs already made. The gauge and diesel cup are a bit cheap, but it does the job. I'll be doing my second set of injectors this weekend. They're also a good source for nozzles, shims, etc. Jaime On Thu, Jan 6, 2011 at 3:38 PM, Dieselhead <126die...@gmail.com> wrote: > > Another project to Randy and/or Rich! > > I'd buy one too! > > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Becker Grand Prix presets '84 300D
The * key isn't related to presets... its a function key that, among other things, allows you to do a direct entry of the frequency as you already discovered. To save a preset, tune to the desired station by any method (seek, direct entry, etc) then press and hold the preset you'd like to save the station too. Keep holding. It will change to it's old saved station, then after a few seconds, to the new preset you have saved. Jaime On Thu, Jan 6, 2011 at 3:41 PM, glenn brown wrote: > > What am I doin' wrong? Re: [MBZ] Timing Chain Crimping Tool
I would be interested in a copy of the plans. I agree that it would be a nice project for a novice machinist. I know I've seen pictures of the tool, I'll see if I can locate them. As to the anvil: Some have described the process as peening, and that could be done. IIRC the regulation tool does not actually peen, but rather stakes the end of the pin by pushing a sharp wedge into the center. The finished pin has a cross pattern pressed into it (most likely by moving a wedge 90 degrees and pressing again). This forces the edges out and completes the link. Interchangeable anvils could be made to a close sliding fit in a hole in one side of the frame, fashioned from drill rod and ground or milled to a wedge on the business end. The end of the screw could also have a removable piece on the end with a recess to receive the end of the pin and not slip. BTW, if the frame were to be made as described below, it would be best to machine the two ends while held together to better line up the anvil with the clamp screw. Re: [MBZ] 1980 300 SD vac lines again!
Its important to remember that the vacuum lines on a 1980 are 30+ years old now and ARE going to fail. The plastic has hardened and vibration will make them break. Fixing vacuum issues isn't a "Today I work on it and it'll be good forever" its going to be "I need to work on this every year from now until forever" unless you replaced them all now... A mityvac and the vacuum diagram is an investment into your future. Vacuum troubleshooting isn't hard, you follow pull the block, pump it down (or try to anyway) and follow the line to the offender. For example: Last fall I drove myself to the airport in my '78 240D, when I got there the car wouldn't shut off. Manual transmissions are handy, step on the brake, pop the clutch, problem solved. When I got back the problem hadn't magically fixed itself but I did notice it wasn't an issue if the doors were unlocked. Hmm, problem therefore MUST be in the door circuit, specifically the UNLOCK side of the door circuit. Theres a block of vacuum hoses under the driver's feet so I pull back the carpet, start unplugging things and pumping down the mity vac and see what happens. Some lock or unlock doors on the other side of the car (if one pulls down but doesn't do anything release vacuum, change the lock state of the doors (unlock or relock) and see what try again) and one unlocks the rear driver's door but one doesn't seem to do anything and doesn't hold vacuum... Start following that one, it goes under the driver's seat and I find a break where it comes out. Find another in the door. Now the rear passenger's door unlocks and relocks. Start the car and verify function with engine vacuum, thats good AND the car shuts off. Problem solved. Also replaced a 4 way adapter which makes the doors unlock and relock faster and hold vacuum longer. Theres more to be gained on this car (leaky old fittings) but I ran out of time that day and its cold now so I'll work on it more in the spring. -Curt Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2011 16:51:27 + (UTC) From: roger...@comcast.net To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] 1980 300 SD vac lines again! The 80 300SD with the servo has a vacuum pod under the dash which controls the blower, except on defrost. Defrost over rides because the windshield clearing is a driveability / safety issue. Hence, if this pod is bad or any lines that can affect it (like my door lock was doing), you won't get blower except for the defrost. I actually replaced my blower motor, only to find that although it seemed like the problem, it was really a vacuum problem from this control pod under the dash. Anyway, unless you want to buy a Mity-vac, buy the manuals, and spend your spare time trying to figure which line you are really tracing for vacuum, I'd recommend a good Indie. I use the boot camp and XP Pro. No complaints. A VM works but wants LOTS of memory. I believe you can install your current XP on a VM without problem. Frod is bringing out a v6 twin turbo F150 that is supposed to get 35 mpg. That gets my attention When the Ranger is used up I'm considering something in a small SUV instead of another pickup, unless Mahindra comes through with a 30mpg diesel. I'd like better fuel economy than the Ranger is capable of but still maintaining the Ranger's offroad chops. This rules out things like Subarus, don't even suggest them. Unfortunately it also rules out most of the "softroaders" like the Escape (a joke offroad), the new Explorer (which is HUGE) and a bunch of others. So I dunno... Interestingly (to further confuse the issue) the '10 Ford F150 gets better (EPA estimate anyway) mileage than my '03 Ranger and the new Tacoma is better than that... -Curt Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2011 22:37:16 -0600 From: Dieselhead <126die...@gmail.com> To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] cheap hauling - was: H rated and governors Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" It's hard to beat a small utility trailer for occasional hauling duty. Not sure what it will do or is intended to do. I believe I got it from this list some time back but all I have is about 4 or 5 pages of flat drawings with dimensions noted. Then I soldered the connector to the fuse holders and to a ground wire. My car wiring was too short to make it out of the hatch, but that was OK, when I rewired the trailer I left about 4' of wire running past the hitch, and I'd open the hatch and make my trailer connection out of the weather. I had one major advantage over you, the car had integrated stop/tail lights, just like the trailer. I suppose you'd need diodes to isolate the turn signals from the stop lights so they didn't backfeed the car lights. I'm pretty sure the W201 is rated for 500kg or 750kg without trailer brakes. There's one a couple of hours away with wood stake sides, no top, asking $150. Looks like the ultimate garden tractor trailer, if your garden tractor takes a 1 7/8 hitch ball. Re: [MBZ] cheap hauling - was: H rated and governors
I have a mighty fine utility trailer made from the cargo bed of a ~'38 Ford pickup; 'put new axle, springs and wheels on it 'bout 10 years ago. When I put the new springs, etc., on it, I must have measured a dozen times before I welded. It also has 123 MB wheel covers plus a 123 trunk star on the tailgate. It pulls/trails perfectly true behind my '87 300D; 'makes for some good conversation, too - people say it's the only MB trailer they've seen - me, too. I have little use for such a thing, but I wanted to do a few renovations around the house, and figured over the next few years, it would be handy. But you're right, hard to justify hauling all the metal around most days, for the odd time I carry a few sheets of plywood or drywall home. It's hard to beat a small utility trailer for occasional hauling duty. Less than $1000 _including_ a hitch on the tow car, low tax, hitch it only when you need it, and even the little ones have 1000 lb (500 kg) load capacity making it comparable to a half-ton pickup. Oh, and the deck is lower so loading/unloading is easier. I think I just convinced myself!! I should go buy one! A companion for the big one I have already. --Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
