Because you can't add a second drive to any of the Macs on which SSDs are

everything?

In related news, Mitch should make sure his page file (and hibernation if
enabled) is moved. I know it can be done but I'm not sure how. On Linux
you would just install swap elsewhere, not sure it would be possible on OSX.

My wife's desktop Mac has two HDDs, I do have to give thought to whether I
install to Applications or elsewhere. Similarly, I have probably 10
volumes mounted at various locations on my Linux boxes at work, so I have to
remember which mount point goes where and is replicated by which filer.
Drives me batty when the only good installer is an RPM.

Unfortunately for those of us lacking infinite storage volume control is a
fact of life, regardless of OS.

Mac OS X is UNIX as described by The Open Group who owns the trademark to
the UNIX brand. There isn't a single Linux distro, no matter how UNIX-like,
that is actually UNIX certified. That means that, technically, Mac OS X is
on the same playing field as Solaris, AIX and HP-UX.

Just so you know, BSD does not have the same GPL Open Source license like
Linux. BSD uses it's own license that is considered a permissive license.
Where if I took Linux code, edited it, and created a super awesome OS that
ran in 640K of RAM and only ever needed 2 MB of space, it would be illegal
for me to close it and begin my reign of software terror upon the world. The
license will not permit it.

In contrast, the BSD license is such that I can take OpenBSD, make a very
minor change, any change at all really, and am legally able to close the
entire product fork and call it my very own. It does not force me to play
friendly with the community like Linux does, which is why most commercial
UNIX systems were originally BSD based.

I just assumed that would be a bad idea.

You will still need to watch your installs, a lot of them are %Program
Files% which will be on your boot drive, regardless of name. Actually
it's been a long time since I've seen a Windows installer that wasn't
a *nix conversion that used a fixed path name.

 Good point. If I move %Program Files% and %Application Data% or %Program
Data% in the registry I might accomplish most of what I want. I just want to
set it up so that they can hit 'typical installation' and not trash my
carefully set up SSD. %UserProfiles% has got to stay off the SSD too, I
don't want crap left on the desktop to hit the SSD.

Can you install Windows where you want? Yes, the NT kernel is not DOS, and
as such does not care about Drive Letters as much. Which means you can put
Windows on Drive Z: if you wish. However, since Windows does not care
about the Drive letter except as an arbitrary hold over from DOS days, it
takes great care in knowing exactly where it's own subsystems are. Meaning
that if you install Windows to Drive D:, Program Files will also be on drive
D:

The only great use of the C: drive, in this instance, is because even most
modern BIOS are still mired in DOS thinking and as such, primary drive in
the queue whether IDE or SATA is going to show itself as drive C:, this is
where the BIOS will look for the boot loader. So you will have to install
the boot loader on Drive C: or it will never boot Windows no matter where
you put it. Which is no great hardship, used to do this all the time when I
dual/triple booted Windows / Linux machines.

But, since you wanting to have Program Files somewhere other than the main
Windows system, this does mean you will have to force changes in the
Registry. Haven't done anything like this in a while so do not know how many
Keys you have to change, but do know that it should be straight forward
while time consuming.

To answer your first question, yes Windows is excrement. With that out of

installed? Are you actually able to copy files from the drive on the Mac?
Which service pack is the new XP running, which was the old?

Because when it comes to Windows, more often than not, one single driver
mis-match causes all kinds of hell. It could be that the USB driver on the
new machine is broken and needs reinstalled, have you tried any other USB
drives on the new system? If the old system was a newer service pack,
then it might be as simple as letting the new machine download standard
updates from Microsoft.com. (And while this sounds weird, I still have an XP
SP 1 disk that I sometimes use to install from when I can't find the newer
one, so it could be the tech that did the install for you didn't make sure
it was the newest service pack / patching revision)

Also, some USB enclosures, themselves, need a driver. Had one some time ago
that had some kind of auto backup button on it. Had a driver for the button.
The drive wouldn't work without it's driver because of the stupid button.
Which made it useless for picking up and moving to other workstations as a

New computer is running XP with service pack 3, I suspect the old drive was SP2
or less (installed in 2005 and never upgraded since it's not on the internet).

I didn't have an appropriate disk Monday, won't be back at that job until
tomorrow, when I will take a DVD-RAM disk or a thumb drive in and see, but I've
never had any trouble at all moving Windows files around with a Mac.

The old drive is an IDE in a five or so year old DVD drive enclosure, should be
completely transparent (no drivers required). I could be wrong, however.
Normally, a USB enclosure just appears as a standard read/write USB device.
Firewire is more complicated, as I have a Sony IDE to Firewire DVD external box
that will ONLY work with the original CDR drive. Big bummer.

I shall hack about Thursday and see where I get.

I will be attempting to make block level clones of the drives on all our
instrument computers in the near future so that if one bites the dust I can
install a new drive (or box and drive) and just copy over the system disk
intact. This avoids having to get a key disk for software, rebuilding all the
instrument methods, and so forth.

I don't think Windows 7 uses the same NTFS implementation as Windows XP so an
XP box, particularly one not upgraded to the latest SP probably can't read the

implementation and thus doesn't have that limitation.

Why is it surprising to think that a computer with a 9 year old OS can't read a

Re: [MBZ] 560 SEL

2011-05-11 Thread Jim Cathey

Wretched car.

I put the car up on ramps and started it, let it get good and warm.
It was like a gentle warm rain under the car, all the various fluids
dripping from above. The most immediately disturbing, and the last
one to start, was coolant. I had thought that the heater core was
holed and this was coming down from the condensate drains, but I
no longer think so. I could see the drains pretty well from below,
and they were dry. The coolant, though dripping from the front of the
transmission, was coming from well forward of that point. It was very
hard to tell, but it is definitely dripping from the head at the rear
corner of #4. I can't really see if it's coming from above there, it
may well be. Or not. Can the head leak coolant readily from there?
I tried to examine all coolant hoses back in the area and all seemed
dry, but of course you can't see everything 100%. Head gasket? The
car did get pretty hot when it lost its coolant through the windshield
washer tank. Did the head crack? The block? Anybody know if the car's
prone to leaking coolant back by #4?

There is ATF everywhere back at the pan. On everything, especially
the exhaust pipes. And dripping. Can't even tell where it's
originating it's so messy.

Power steering fluid, of course. But that's the normal bad seal
weeping. The least of the problems I'd say.

And something clear-browny and runny dripping from the ATF cooler line
where it straps to the oil pan. But it's not red, I think this is
suspension oil running down from above and picking up a lot of
dirt/grime along the way. I can't really see where it is coming from,
but the two fittings on the pump seem dry enough, though the bottom of
the body is wet with suspension oil. I've re-sealed that twice, I
probably need to get another pump.) I did note a flaw in the sealing
surface of the pump body.) That won't be easy. That may not be the
only leak in the area, the high-pressure line looks like it joins a
rubber hose, it looks pretty wet there.

No, a new OS should read the old file system. I wouldn't expect an old
installation of XP to read a windows 7 disk, but I sure would expect Win 7 to
transparently read an old NTFS disk!

It's not hard to implement, and the Mac will read (and format!) a host of old
formated, mac and PC.

I don't think Windows 7 uses the same NTFS implementation as Windows XP so an
XP box, particularly one not upgraded to the latest SP probably can't read the
volume. A Mac with a recent (post Win7 like 10.6) OS has the current
implementation and thus doesn't have that limitation.

Why is it surprising to think that a computer with a 9 year old OS can't read
a drive formatted with a 2 year old OS? The same would have happened when HFS
switched to HFS+ with OS9 on the Mac...

to recap: Old computer died. New computer running XP. Is it XP Pro?
You took the hard drive out of the old computer, put it in a usb

New computer reports old drive as unformatted.
Question is: WHY?

Same unit plugged in to a Mac laptop shows up as a normal NT disk.

Hence, I suspect, why the tricycle conversions of big touring bikes
like Gold Wings and Dyna-Glides use such wide car tires on the driven
axle. Ten times the contact patch in the rear than in the front makes
it hard to swap ends in a corner unless you are really trying. (OTOH,

[MBZ] 126 Blower A/C

2011-05-11 Thread Dieselhead
Finally got the A/C charged on the SDL. Went to drive it and no A/C!
The problem is compounded by the fact that I need to leave in the
morning and planned to take it on about a 10 day trip.

When the Fan and up/down buttons are pushed, the compressor runs, but
there is no blower. Since this is an 87, it has the large fuse
outside the fusebox as stock. Fuses all seem to be good. I am
assuming that the PBU would be the next suspect. I have no spares.

Is there any way to hotwire the fan somewhere without digging out
the fan motor itself?

I know, I know, Jim can resolder the whole board in something like 20
seconds flat. I don't have an electronics shop and I don't have time
to mess with that tonight. If I can get a temporary fix, I can take
the car. Otherwise I have to take the van and that means I can't
get the 300D back from Daughter to work on, and that was part of the
point of the whole trip! Leave SDL, bring back 300D.

8 or 10 years ago, blower on my 91 350SDL was inop because of bad

trip of several days. I wired in a toggle switch which I left hanging just
below the dashboard and by upper right side of center console within reach
of my right hand. It was Summer here in NC and VA, and the system worked
fine. Obviously, I did have access to the right wires to/from the
porcupine. I believe one has 6v, another 9v, another 12v, etc., for
different blower speeds. I wired the 12v one thru the toggle switch.
My car does not have glove box; has air bag in its place; if yours has glove

Re: [MBZ] Any Windows experts out there?

2011-05-11 Thread Curt Raymond
I've never had any trouble with Win7 reading anything... From your original
email it sounded like your XP box couldn't read a Win7 drive, it wasn't until I
went back that I noticed the Win7 upgraded from part.

As an aside I've noticed many people upgrading from XP or Vista to Win7. For
christsake don't! Put your important files on a new drive, wipe the old drive,
install Win7 fresh.

An upgraded OS is NEVER as good as a clean install.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Weird

2011-05-11 Thread Curt Raymond
I hate that the front faces backward. The only part of a Citation I thought was
any good looking was the weird beetle shaped rear end...

I had a Citation at one point in college. Horrible little car a friend (kinda a
friend anyway) gave to me after I limped it through a month for him. I did a
full tuneup on it with parts scavenged from a junkyard for $8. It met its end
in front of my parents house when the transmission grenaded, the pan blew off
and the pavement was showered with ATF and little bits of transmission.

8 or 10 years ago, blower on my 91 350SDL was inop because of bad
porcupine/controller directly beneath blower and above front passenger
footwell. 'Didn't have time to get replacement porcupine before
necessary trip of several days. I wired in a toggle switch which I left
hanging just below the dashboard and by upper right side of center console
within reach of my right hand. It was Summer here in NC and VA, and the
system worked fine. Obviously, I did have access to the right wires
to/from the porcupine. I believe one has 6v, another 9v, another 12v,
etc., for different blower speeds. I wired the 12v one thru the toggle
switch.
My car does not have glove box; has air bag in its place; if yours has

When the Fan and up/down buttons are pushed, the compressor runs, but
there is no blower. Since this is an 87, it has the large fuse outside
the fusebox as stock. Fuses all seem to be good. I am assuming that
the PBU would be the next suspect. I have no spares.

Is there any way to hotwire the fan somewhere without digging out the

I know, I know, Jim can resolder the whole board in something like 20

[MBZ] Atlanta GTG and Chowdah Q Video linkup?

2011-05-11 Thread toms cat1

I will defer to Dwight, Curt and Fred to correct me if I am mistaken on
this but isn't September 10, 2011 the scheduled date for the Chowdah Q?

Call me crazy but... We have a little planning lead time, and we have some
pretty tech-savvy folks in here Is it possible, or is there any interest
In setting up some kind of live video link, or a link of some sort,
between the two simultaneous Mercedes get-togethers? A Mercedes Meet-Up.

Ok, let's get a preliminary head count on who would actually make the trip
for a get together on September 10th, 2011. Burgers, dogs, chips and soft
drinks provided by the hosts. Feel free to bring a side dish for all to
enjoy. Let me know and I'll start a probable RSVP list that we all know
will change over the next 3 months. Rusty Cullens BuyMBparts, Inc.

If I understand correctly, you want the OS and the programs on the SSD
and your data on the slower drive? If that is the case these articles
may help...

Win7 is different from XP.
And I blew up the system a couple of times using User Account moving techniques
intended for Vista with a notation that 'Win7 is the same thing as Vista'.

What ended up working for me on the User account thing was editing the registry
to move the default profiles to D:, then rebooting and logging in as a new user,
then deleting the old user (whose profile directories were on C:) and changing
the new user's name to that of the old user.

I also moved the default paths for programs and programdata.

As for the drive letters (my original question), I just left the system drive's
name as C:.
Most installers seem to go to the default program files location, rather than
being programmed for C:]Program_Files by name.

Anyway, it looks like I achieved my goal. Windows boots up in about 1/2 the time
of an identical system with a fast hard drive, and the main program it's used
with loads in 15 seconds instead of 30. I'm not going to think about how many
years it would take him to save the number of hours I spent fighting with Win7
over where I wanted stuff saved.

Re: [MBZ] 126 Blower A/C

2011-05-11 Thread Dieselhead
Thanks! I got it working. Whew! Never even had a chance to come
look for answers to my question.

Local independent had a known good test PBU. I plugged that in.
No blow. Took out the motor, brushes badly worn. He had a new
motor for his personal 420SE. I bought the motor and got it in.
Still no blow. Fuses good. No juice to fuse 16 or the big 30 Amp
strip. Wiggled the switch, juice. SO it works with the switch
turned on, then slightly toward off

Yes, there is a porcupine under the blower. 126 is MUCH easier than
any other MB i ever worked on. Similar to the 2000 dogde van, but
easier. Flat rate for the fan is 1.5 hr. I changed out the PBU
twice, and changed the blower in just over an hour, and I'm not fast.

I knew I had just a few minutes to get to the indy and try the PBU
swap. SO I just ran from the SE corner of town to the far NW corner
(it used to be a separate town) to get the PBU before he closed.

Guess the final analysis is that its going to need either a new ign
lock or ign switch (or both) sometime. Not today's project! It sure
purrs nice now, and BLOWS ICE COLD!

Dieselhead,

'Just sent pdf's of blower and electronic control unit (above
passenger footwell) RR to you off list. 'May be able to access
wire that you need for the blower at the control unit.

Do we have archives from about 2003, when Marshall and I
discussed my blower/porcupine problem? I think he told which wire
has 6v, 9v, 12v, and other stuff about the porcupine.

Check the archives; 'gonna see what I can find on the CD.

8 or 10 years ago, blower on my 91 350SDL was inop because of
bad porcupine/controller directly beneath blower and above
front passenger footwell. 'Didn't have time to get replacement
porcupine before necessary trip of several days. I wired in a
toggle switch which I left hanging just below the dashboard and
by upper right side of center console within reach of my right
hand. It was Summer here in NC and VA, and the system worked
fine. Obviously, I did have access to the right wires to/from
the porcupine. I believe one has 6v, another 9v, another 12v,
etc., for different blower speeds. I wired the 12v one thru the
toggle switch.
My car does not have glove box; has air bag in its place; if
yours has glove box, the wires may be a little more accessible.

I'll see what I can find on the CD, which I did not have at the time.

Finally got the A/C charged on the SDL. Went to drive it and no
A/C! The problem is compounded by the fact that I need to leave
in the morning and planned to take it on about a 10 day trip.

When the Fan and up/down buttons are pushed, the compressor
runs, but there is no blower. Since this is an 87, it has the
large fuse outside the fusebox as stock. Fuses all seem to be
good. I am assuming that the PBU would be the next suspect. I
have no spares.

Is there any way to hotwire the fan somewhere without digging
out the fan motor itself?

I know, I know, Jim can resolder the whole board in something
like 20 seconds flat. I don't have an electronics shop and I
don't have time to mess with that tonight. If I can get a
temporary fix, I can take the car. Otherwise I have to take the
van and that means I can't get the 300D back from Daughter to
work on, and that was part of the point of the whole trip!
Leave SDL, bring back 300D.

Yes, that happens. The switch contacts go bad and some
