My neighbor, Tom, has this exact car and loves it! He's poured money into
it to make it right, even a total active/hydraulic suspension rebuild. He
had the water pump seize, $1500 to make it whole again. He says I should
give up my Mercedes addiction and get a Bimmer.

[MBZ] The ex-SnookMobile is now in Los Alamos

2011-07-19 Thread Craig
Yup, the '95 E320 Don advertised recently is now sitting in front of my
house. I rented a car from Budget in Santa Fe Thursday evening, drove to
Wichita, KS, arriving Friday afternoon, picked up the E320 Friday
evening, and drove back to Los Alamos, arriving Saturday evening.

The return trip was 614 miles on 22.922 gallons, for a trip mileage of
26.79 mpg. That's including three times on Highway 412 west of Wichita
where I floored it to pass someone. I made it past Clayton, NM before the
orange low-fuel light came on. I had hoped to make it to Springer on
I-25, but chickened out and got gas at Gladstone. All they had there was
regular unleaded. I got 10 gallons and drove on that all the way to Los
Alamos. I should have gotten about 2 gallons and driven to Springer where
I could have gotten premium. It seemed to run fine on the regular, but I
did fill it with premium when I got to Los Alamos.

We will keep the 240D/3.0 and sell the E420. I'm wondering if I should
swap the wheels/tires so I can use the new snow tires with the E320.

Actually according to Wikipedia the '79 300SD would have a 617.950 and
the 300D a 617.952. One difference being the .952 makes an additional
15HP. They don't go into detail on other differnces.

The '83 300D definitely has a bit more in the way of vacuum controlled
stuff, I'm assuming this is a more sophisticated EGR and maybe
transmission modulation. Hoping it would not a big deal to just swap
what's in the '79 300SD.

I'll take 123's - but by the time I transport it here _and_ pay
you $200 a ton it costs too much. Shoot - even just the
$200/ton makes a W123 worth about $400 and that's almost too
much money right there.

[MBZ] W116 delema

2011-07-19 Thread Allan Streib
So I've decided I need to do something about this W116 300SD I bought a
few months ago. As you may recall this is the one that threw the
harmonic balancer, breaking the bolt off and causing unknown damage to
the crank. An indy mechanic told the PO that the engine needed a new
crankshaft, but I don't really know whether to believe that.

Supposedly, according to the prior owner, the 300SD is in good running
order aside from this problem.

Now, my 300D needs a front-end rebuild. The ball joints are clanking,
there's misc squeeking and creaking, and the driver's side front tire is
wearing at about twice the rate of the others.

So my thought is to pull the good OM617 from my 300D and drop it into
the 300SD. Then, with the engine out of the 300SD I can get a good look
at the crankshaft and decide what to do about it. Meanwhile, with the
engine out of the 300D I have easy access to all the suspension to
rejuvinate that.

I know both cars have basically the same engine, but not sure what can
come over and what needs to be swapped. What all will I need on hand,
I'm assuming manifold gasket, might as well replace all the hoses and
belts, anything else?

Hoping to make the swap a weekend project. Does this sound reasonable?

There's also the issue of transporting it from Okie-land. Even if you

I drove from Charleston to Greensboro over the weekend, and there must
have been some kind of VW show somewhere up that way as I saw a whole
load of bugs all fancied up on the road. Reminded me of college days

the winter in Indiana).

WOW! Thanks for the vote of confidence. I just replaced my battery at my
indy's and we reprogrammed windows and locks in about 20 seconds - no charge.
I don't know why you have to do that, but evidently its done after replacing
the battery. Based on my research on the BMW forums, I think you are mistaken
about the cost of these repairs. The reliability went up fairly dramatically
after the 97 model year.

By the way, I talked to the service manager about this car. He knew the car.
He knows the previous owner. The guy took exceptional care of the car.
Evidently, he was a little neurotic and wanted the radiator cap replaced at
every oil change. All work from new was done at the dealer. Including the
Inspection II that was done less than 9,000 miles ago. This is a dealer service
that costs between $800-1200 plus anything things that it needs. At this
inspection, the dealership checked a ton of stuff (too much too list) and did
the following:

Changed rear differential fluid, flushed braked fluid, flushed power steering
fluid, flushed coolant, replaced plugs, replaced all filters, and checked,
inspected and lubed a WHOLE bunch of other things. So, Im pretty happy with
the car. The previous owner was very anal and everything has been done.

Donald H. Snook

Don't worry. You will be fine so long as nothing breaks.
Even if it does, you cannot be into the car for all that much. Sell it
for scrap, walk away and call it depreciation. Wouldn't be any worse
than on a new car of some other sort.

AND we all know you won't keep it 6 months anyway so what are the odds
of any big items going.

It kind of depends on the audience you are speaking to. The BMW guys all tell

How many miles on it? Any issues? What would you want for it?

Sigh. My thought too. It's hard to imagine a 123 in average
condition being valuable when there are so many on the road today, but
at some point, people may well be beating the bushes for the few
rust-free bodies left. In my lifetime (I'm 39), I've seen the same
thing happen to air-cooled VWs (just to pick one example of
many)---they used to be just dime-a-dozen cheap used cars, and now
rust-free original cars and good shells with restoration potential are
both highly valued. You can't put much stock in predictions of what
is going to be collectible in the future, either---how many people in
the late '30s thought that '33 Fords would become a cult item?

It's a 17mm wrench for the injection lines, cutters for the fuel and
oil lines, 13mm(I think) for the 3 front flange bolts, and the rear
anti-roll bolt.

About an hour tops I'd think, but that's going from when I removed the
616 pump with it in the engine bay, carefully unhooking fuel lines.

Re: [MBZ] 300E pickup

2011-07-19 Thread Dieselhead
There was a guy in Chicago 25 or so years ago who had a 230S or 230SE
(111) in a garage when a tree fell on the garage. He had it turned
into a 2 seat pickup. He sold it a few years later.

I don't think I have seen a 110 pickup, but there have been several
fade from 111 body cars.

I've seen a photo of a similar custom W110. Not sure if it started
out as a Binz ambulance or a sedan.

There are supposed to be a couple of 600 grosser pickups.

I know BMWs, like all German cars, are notorious for hatching electrical
gremlins as they age, but I'm still surprised to hear that. Generally the
BMW aluminum V-8s have had a great reputation (once they worked out the
issue with the self-destructing Nikasil blocks early on). Nothing like the
timing chain problems in the 3.8 liter Mercedes, or the Audi V-8 that was
made of two VW GTI 16-valve fours joined at the crank and was more
troublesome than either would have been separately.

Re: [MBZ] starting on ether

2011-07-19 Thread G Mann
If you care to dig for it, there is an ASTM for #1 and #2 diesel,,, also Jet
A , and with those engineering specs in hand you can compare the various
elements that make them.
There is also a "cold weather spec" for blending #1 & #2 to lower gell
point. Remember reading it.. but don't remember the ASTM number.

In order to be sold all diesel has to be certified as having met the
pertinent ASTM spec.

Bio Diesel made to public sale also has same requirement to meet spec ASTM
5261- [what ever the latest dash is]. So that may bring some light to the
question ask about "veggie slime".

Vegetable oil has no ASTM fuel spec, however there is a food spec for new
oil.
Waste Veg Oil has to many variables to have a "spec".

Bunker Oil.. [ship fuel] has more than one grade and each has an ASTM spec.
Not that any of them would apply to MBZ use.

Nice going Curt!

I hope you are satisfied with yourself.

See what you got me into?

At the auction Saturday I bought a pair of 220F lanterns for
$3. Both are in pretty rough shape, but one had an intact
globe (that alone worth what I paid). So now, thanks to you, I
have a lantern - and any old device like that needs spare parts
too, right? Now I have spare parts.

But the one looks like maybe it could be made to work. Just a
bit of rust at the font fill...

Subject: [MBZ] Black cars

I am just catching up on several digests, so I'm a little behind. I have
TWO black cars.

One is my wife's 2010 Dodge Charger. She picked it out. I found the
comments about these cars quite funny. The really odd thing is that she
just told me two days ago she would like to get the windows tinted. She
had to decide between a VERY bright red color, white, gold or black. I
actually find the RED color to be the most flashy - at least the red that
Dodge uses. She had a big white Ford Expedition previously. White cars
are nice to keep clean. But, they can look a little boring. Someone
referred to the charger in Black as being "aggressive" and I think that
it exactly right. It's a mean looking car!

My other black car is my new to me 2000 BMW 740iL. I agree black cars are
a pain to keep clean. But, if you find a used car that is black and the
paint is in good shape to me that means that someone has taken care of the
car. I agree that some cars look better in certain colors. I really
liked the color of my old 1990 300D. I think it was desert sand metallic
(or whatever they called it). But, that color wasn't very exciting. It was
a little boring. But, it had just enough metallic in it that when it was
waxed and shined, it really sparkled.

I actually really love black cars if they are cool looking cars. I think
my new BMW is gorgeous in black. But, I agree they are hard to keep
clean. But, when they are clean, they look VERY nice!

From what I've found, 45-50, which is better than the requirements for diesel
fuel in the US (40 cetane number -- different than cetane index -- see the
wikipedia article). Depends on the source and condition, etc.

Biodiesels are higher, and burn cleaner due to their homogenous nature. Diesel
fuel is a distillate, so it has a small amount of very heavy stuff that never
burns properly.

Re: [MBZ] My new car!

2011-07-19 Thread Peter Frederick

I suspect you will like it a lot less when the $3000 "convenience relay" box
goes out and the windows won't work (hopefully, with all of them up), or the
door locks fry -- $500 each and four hours labor, and then a big ol charge at
the dealer to "reprogram" them.

Funky engine control problems will drive you nuts as well -- intermittent
no-start with no cause, flaky crank position sensors (can only be reached from
below, blind, on top of the bell housing), etc.

I hope it's a long time before you have trouble!

These are as bad as the W140s, which is NOT a recommendation for ownership --
most people dumped them at the end of the lease or the extended warrenty.

I live in farm country and the cars stay outside -- any fingerprint or smudge
collects dust in hours, they are visible from 50 ft away and black cars look
filthy ALL the time.

I have one, gave up on washing it more than once every few months, too much
work since it looked a mess in a couple days.

You should also know that American diesel fuel is crap -- Euro spec is for
MINIMUN 50 Cetane, we usually run 40 or less in the summer. A major reason
diesels smoke so badly here.

In case you didn't know, cetane index is the ignitibility index vs pure cetane
(C10), same purpose as octane number with an opposite scale (the higher the
number the more easily ti burns).

Ship diesels use really crappy fuel, barely rates as #2 most of the time.

Re: [MBZ] Detailing and Oil questions

2011-07-19 Thread Allan Streib
Castrol is the villain that confused the market on synthetic oils. They
developed Syntec as a Group III oil (hydrocracked petroleum) as compared to the
then-group IV (PAO base) oil that was Mobil-1.

Mobil took them to court over using the word "synthetic" to describe this oil
but did not prevail. So now we have the word "synthetic" that can mean
different things.

AFAIK Castrol synthetic is not a "pure" (PAO) synthetic base. I don't think
any mainstream brand of "synthetic" oil is a group IV anymore except Amsoil and
maybe some of the Mobil-1 formulations.

Best thing to do is contact a BMW dealer and find out what is currently
approved for your car. Note that what's in the owner's manual is out-of-date,
oils that were Group IV then are likely Group III now.

General wisdom in the world outside of this list is that if you can get the true
euro spec Castrol (can't remember if it's 0W40 or 5W40), it's the best stuff
commonly available for VW/Audi/BMW. Much used to be made of green vs amber, but
I think the right stuff comes in both colors.

[MBZ] Black cars

2011-07-19 Thread Donald Snook
I am just catching up on several digests, so I'm a little behind. I have TWO
black cars.

One is my wife's 2010 Dodge Charger. She picked it out. I found the comments
about these cars quite funny. The really odd thing is that she just told me two
days ago she would like to get the windows tinted. She had to decide between a
VERY bright red color, white, gold or black. I actually find the RED color to
be the most flashy - at least the red that Dodge uses. She had a big white
Ford Expedition previously. White cars are nice to keep clean. But, they can
look a little boring. Someone referred to the charger in Black as being
"aggressive" and I think that it exactly right. It's a mean looking car!

My other black car is my new to me 2000 BMW 740iL. I agree black cars are a
pain to keep clean. But, if you find a used car that is black and the paint is
in good shape to me that means that someone has taken care of the car. I
agree that some cars look better in certain colors. I really liked the color
of my old 1990 300D. I think it was desert sand metallic (or whatever they
called it). But, that color wasn't very exciting. It was a little boring. But,
it had just enough metallic in it that when it was waxed and shined, it really
sparkled.

I actually really love black cars if they are cool looking cars. I think my
new BMW is gorgeous in black. But, I agree they are hard to keep clean. But,
when they are clean, they look VERY nice!

If I could, I would.
What's your rate for pulling parts?

I assume I'd be paying ~20 cents a pound for the IP itself?

Nice going Curt!

I hope you are satisfied with yourself.

See what you got me into?

At the auction Saturday I bought a pair of 220F lanterns for
$3. Both are in pretty rough shape, but one had an intact
globe (that alone worth what I paid). So now, thanks to you, I
have a lantern - and any old device like that needs spare parts
too, right? Now I have spare parts.

But the one looks like maybe it could be made to work. Just a
bit of rust at the font fill...
