Re: [MBZ] 123 PS pump threads
1980 240D with 1981 engine I went out to look for tap and die to clean the PS pump threads and the hose threads. I thought it looked about the same as a spark plug (postwar to 1980) so I was thinking it may be 14mm. Turns out it is 5/8 NF. Checked the measurements and pitch several times. So, I guess that the original PS was adapted from 'Merican cars or 'Merican hoses off 'Merican aircraft engines. Same way the krauts adapted 'Merican tire measurements (5 1/2 JK 14) Maybe they adapted it from a chrypsler. I know the front wheel bearings are the same as old chrypslers, and the wheel bolt pattern seems to be adaptable to a chrypsler product. Interesting stuff. What was the first MB with Power Steering? Did the Adenauer have PS? I find it easiest to start threads when the pump body is loose too. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] How bad will I mess up my a/c?
Assuming everything works as it should am I likely to damage anything with the epoxy on r-134 adapters and a recharge of the wal-mart r-134? I have Yes. The refrigerant is OK, but the required oils (because R134a will not transport mineral oil) are evil. searched and searched for Jim's test refrigerant locally and find nothing with isobutane, only butane and propane. So I'd use that! I actually probably have, since the cans' contents are not always obviously marked. The preferred stuff is high-altitude camp fuel. By the time I'm done, what's in the test charge is probably 90% propane anyway. Supposedly the only problem with butane is its higher boiling point, there's a minor risk it'll hit the compressor input as a liquid. Probably no chance, if you're actually only using it when it's hot. So, if I will only damage the fittings and it will work fair on 134 then I will go for it, if it is likely to damage my compressor or anything else I will bring a big cooler of ice water. If the oils aren't working the compressor will seize. If the (R134a) oils _are_ working then they're hygroscopic, and immiscible with the pre-existing mineral oil which will clog up the works. Don't do it! I believe one of the R12-replacements is largely R134a with a dollop of isobutane in it to transport the old oil. But if you're going to put butane in anyway I'd just be sure to 'test' it first. Maybe for a few years... A replacement compressor was $15 at the U-Pull last time I got one. Nearly negligible, but the wreckage (black death) a seizing compressorputs into the piping is not.
There is a low-pressure cut-off switch in the system that has probably disabled the compressor. On the 79 it is down on the lower left looking at the engine bay from the front, has a wire or two, attached to the hard line. You can jump it to see if that is the cause (compressor should kick on with it shorted). I don't think you want to put 134 in there, oil incompatiblility? On 7/23/11 10:02 AM, Michael Canfield wrote: I have a road trip to Detroit to make with the 83 300d. The a/c does not work. [MBZ] 123 sunroof drain cleanout
I came to the conclusion that the sunroof drains on the 81 have been plugged for years. Rust and water level lines inside confirm this. I have been looking for the drains and poking around with #10 wire, and not found the drain exit out the back. Now that I have the roof out, I'd like to get the drains open. Is there any way to clean them bottom up? (I think they are hidden, so I doubt this is possible.) How do I find the exit holes for the drains? On a 124, you can see them if you get the light just right. I can't find them on the 123, and the book has nothing about the drains or cleaning the drains. I am running the wire back along the outer edge of the sunroof cavity, roughly in line with the chrome slides. Would have ample time to arrive while machine shop had the head. Lift head off and move it out into daylight to see what is what. Wipe up and look for where the gasket had gone bad. Yep, right between two and three, on three. Wear and missing a bit around the edge. Just enough for gases to flow into coolant. Damn. But no damage visible, so, ok, try to get gasket off and look around underneath. Wiping up the stay coolant and oil schmutz. Looks good so far. Minor rust on cylinder walls of three and two. Mental note for red scruffy pad to take care of that. Get some light on the whole thing and start seeing other issues. Cylinder walls are smooth, no cross hatch at all. And WTF, there is some crazing on top of #1. Crap! That is a CRACK! and there looks to be some stress wear on all the cylinders around where the pre-chamber divot is. POOP. No way will I be able to swing a rebuild. SWMBA is no at all please that I am even tinkering with Gump. Spent the rest of the day stripping out all usable parts for posting on CL. The problem with cars like this that you know damn well that it has been neglected, both cosmetically and mechanically. However this is not always the case, my TE had been neglected (used as a family truck) but was serviced by someone who knew what they where doing. [MBZ] MBCA and Pacifica Car Shows
A local retired commercial fisherman has the rustiest MB inside and outside I've ever seen. Asked him why he parked it with one wheel up on the concrete wheel stop in the parking space, and he said the driver side door wouldn't close otherwise. It ran good and didn't have many miles on it. He said it got rusty because he sometimes threw his wet nets on the seats, in the trunk, and tied down on the roof. This would be a good MB to enter in the MBCA Car Show. It should make it all the way to the West Coast with a little help from members along the way. After the show, someone out there could park it in their backyard and then enter it in the Pacifica Rusty Car Contest. (See attached.) which is probably the only contest that MB has never won. The article says, it ... injects 6.5 ounces of diesel in every piston for every cycle. Since it's a two-stroke engine, that's 6.5 ounces per piston per revolution. Since it has 12 cylinders, that' 78 ounces per revolution. Since it runs 102 revolutions/minute, that's 7956 ounces per minute (which is 62.15625 gallons/minute). At that rate, it's 477,360 gallons/hour. The article says it produces 109,000 HP, which is 3.597e+09 ft-lb/min. That is also 4,622,387.7 BTU/min. Since one gallon of diesel has about 120,000 BTU, 62.15625 gallons of diesel has about 7,458,750 BTU. Since the input is 7,458,750 BTU/min and the output is 4,622,387.7 BTU/min, the efficiency is 61.97%. The efficiency seems high, but the fuel consumption seems astronomical. Where do the put all the fuel? At 31 knots, a trip of 3100 nautical miles will take 100 hours, for a total fuel consumption of 47,736,000 gallons. At 7.48 gallons per cubic foot, the fuel tank would have to be 6,381,375 cubic feet. If it were a cube, that would be 185.48 feet on a side. Well, OK, for a ship that's 1300 feet long, that's not too much But still! Tell the MD to read up. (S)He was indoctrinated 30 years ago with incomplete (or false) information. Eggs don't raise your cholesterol. Real culprits are hydrogenated veg oils (or hydrogenated animal oils), trans fats and other unnatural foods. (margerine) http://www.health.harvard.edu/press_releases/egg-nutrition (2006) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-katz-md/usda-eggs-cholesterol_b_820497.html (2011) It is really a Yale study, not something from the blithering ijits. From WebMD, regarding the same Yale study: Eggs in moderation can be part of a heart-healthy diet, says David Katz, MD, MPH, director and founder of the Yale University Prevention Research Center in Derby, Conn. In a study published in 2010 in Nutrition Journal, Katz and his colleagues found that moderate egg intake didn't adversely affect blood cholesterol in men and women with high cholesterol (although egg substitutes improved it). The study was funded by the CDC and the Egg Nutrition Center, funded by the American Egg Board, an industry group. Moderate egg consumption doesn't appear to be linked to an increased cardiac risk, Katz and his colleagues conclude, although further testing is needed on people with established heart disease to clarify the place of eggs in a judicious and heart-healthy diet. When people are told to avoid or eliminate eggs from their diet, Katz says they might substitute unhealthy foods. When we tell people not to eat eggs, what are they eating instead? He suspects they may substitute a Danish, for instance, for their breakfast eggs. www.webmd.com/cholesterol-management/news/20110207/less-cholesterol-in-eggs-usda-says http://www.iowaegg.org/egg_nutrition/eggs_come_full_circle.asp It is parallel/analogous to the scare 30 years ago that drinking a cup of coffee would kill you. He said it got rusty because he sometimes threw his wet nets on the seats, in the trunk, and tied down on the roof. This would be a good MB to enter in the MBCA Car Show. Re: [MBZ] Drain Front Brake Resovoir
it will drain when you open the (rear) bleeders. It is set up to hold fluid as long as possible for the front brakes, as they do 70-80% of the stopping. In theory that is meant to get you safely to someplace for fluid/repairs when the rear brakes fail. so, the front section fill first, then the rear section will fill. You can flush out some of the black stuff by flushing with DOT4 fluid. It is also a good time to consider a switch to DOT5. Keep in mind that DOT4 and DOT 5 don't mix. If you switch, you need to flush with DOT 5, and that takes most of a quart to flush until no more DOT4 (or Dot 3) comes out. Looking at the brake fluid resovoir on the 83 300D. It is a Girling. I've suctioned all the fluid out from under the cap but the front section is seperate and still full of fluid. Starting to take off the front calipers to rebuild them when my Rusty parts get here. How do I get the fluid out of that sectiion? It looks dark like old fluid. I expect it will drain out when the calipers are removed, but don't know how I will get fluid back it in. Re: [MBZ] 123 PS pump threads
Well, some light was shed today on the uncooperative threads. I used the die (5/8 NF - 18) on the threads of the tubing nut on the loose hose. After a little difficulty starting the die, it went on and cleaned right up. Took off most of the cad plating, but no big deal. I tried the die on the nut on the hose on the car, and could not get it to start straight. If I could chuck it in a drill press, with the die flat on the table, I could probably get it started straight. But because it is on the high pressure hose, there is no way to do that. A vice to clamp it and a thread tap machine would work, but I don't have access to that either. Probably will just swap hoses. So, I tried running the tap in the pump thread. Seemed like it would not start, so I tried turning it backwards a bit. This turned out what looked like a broken off thread inside the pump. It turned out that it was a helicoil. I tried starting the tap in the helicoil, and can't get it started. It started raining a lot and got real dark so I quit again. I think I will probably swap the PS pumps, and use the loose hose. But when I get a day with good daylight, I may try to straighten out the helicoil and tap again. The article says, it ... injects 6.5 ounces of diesel in every piston for every cycle. Since it's a two-stroke engine, that's 6.5 ounces per piston per revolution. Since it has 12 cylinders, that's 78 ounces per revolution. Since it runs 102 revolutions/minute, that's 7956 ounces per minute (which is 62.15625 gallons/minute). So far so good. :-) At that rate, it's 477,360 gallons/hour. It's 477,360 OUNCES/hour, which is 3729.375 gallons/hour, or 89,505 gallons/day. If you change to bunker oil at 140,000 BTU/gallon, the efficiency is only 53.12%, still high. The efficiency seems high, but the fuel consumption seems astronomical. Where do they put all the fuel? At 31 knots, a trip of 3100 nautical miles will take 100 hours, for a total fuel consumption of 47,736,000 gallons. At 3729.375 gallons/hour, the total fuel consumption is 372,937.5 gallons. At 7.48 gallons per cubic foot, the fuel tank would have to be 6,381,375 cubic feet. If it were a cube, that would be 185.48 feet on a side. The fuel tank would then be 49858 cubic feet, a cube 36.81 feet on a side. Boy, one little mistake will throw the whole thing off! Reminds me of my high school calculus teacher who had us work out test problems on the front sides of our pages of paper and then fold the test in half vertically so the back side of the last page was showing and then write our answers there.
