Why not fill the holes with that readily available vinyl repair stuff? You mix
and match the color. Being just holes vs cracks it should probably stand up
fairly well.

If the edges can be approximated exactly, I imagine ordinary

Re: [MBZ] How to restore a cracked blue W123 dash

2012-01-29 Thread Jim Cathey

Anyway, how good are the various blue dyes (e.g., Leatherique) in
matching the OEM blue color on a touchup basis? Or will I need to
fill the cracks and holes and respray each dash in its entirety?

Leatherique 'dye' (a latex paint) looks perfect. The problem
is the cracks. (Not sure about holes.) I 'fixed' a cracked
107 dash with Leatherique crack filler, textured it with a butter
knife as it dried, and painted over it all with an airbrush to
get the paint texture just right. Many thin coats. Looked
magnificent when it was all done.

First time in the car when the sun hit it the dash expanded
greatly, and squeezed all the crack filler out in bulgy lines!
You could always tell how hot it was in the car by the state
of the toothpaste lines in the dash.

A dashboard is an evil place. You'd have to fill the cracks
with urethane foam, of the same expansion coefficient and
strength as the base material, not getting it all over and
filled to just below surface level, skin it over with crack
filler to get the texture right, and then paint. With enough
care and luck it might even look good and hold up.

Or do what I did and put a dash cap on it.

Would shoe goo be a good option to repair a tear?

Not really. To do it right I'd take a heavy piece of canvas
or leather and put it behind the tear, and glue it in place
with fabric glue. (A rubber-based glue.) Then fill the
crack with Leatherique's crack filler and dye (paint) the
seat. Might be easiest to apply the patch from behind,
which means that it's just as much work as to just replace
the seat cover with new. Price of materials to fix it
right could run to a substantial fraction of the new
cover's price, you should check with Rusty.

Re: [MBZ] Bad day for driving

2012-01-29 Thread Jim Cathey

Yesterday I started taking apart the replacement door, and the farther
along I got the less happy I got. It was in worse shape than I'd
thought, the whole bottom channel for the weatherstripping was rusted
away, and there was a lot of rust in the door bottom too. Looks like
it started under the weatherstrip itself, and worked its way in from
there. (Rather than plugged drain holes causing rust to start on the
inside and work out.) The window tracks are messed up, which made it
bind on the way up, which caused PO to use too much torque on the
handle which flexed the door's inner metal panel and cracked it over
time. So I'm looking at a serious amount of rust repair and some
welding, all for a door that's the wrong color anyway. Ick.

OTOH I could just wait for a better door to come along, if I could get
the bent door working better. (I'd planned on this possibility all
along, the door itself was cheap enough that if all I got out of it
was a handle and the piece of belt trim I'd still be happy.) Figuring
I had very little to lose I opened up the damaged door and removed the
remains of the ruined door handle, and started hammering the metal
back out. I used a chunk of maple firewood that tapered down to about
1/2x1-1/2 or so, yet had a mallet-sized big end which I could hit.
The thin tapered end reached through the holes in the door's inner
panel, allowing me to direct the force better than a big chunk would.
Being wood it's softer than metal and less likely to poke dimples into
the panel. I had my son hold the door while I whacked away. I also
used a big crowbar to pry and pound at the crease lines in the
metalwork (the ones that belong there). I used various small crowbars
of my acquaintance to hook through the door handle holes and pull out,
trying to restore the correct profile in the area without doing too
much further damage. That actually went fairly well. I removed the
bottom trim strip and found that most of the damage at the bottom was
to the strip itself, which is metal with plastic molded around it.
(The strip comes off with one 8mm nut at the trailing edge, behind a
snap-in plastic cap, and a hook at the front. I had to break it loose
from the plastic retaining clips along the middle and then pull
backwards to release the front hook.) I think I'll be able to restore
the strip to usability on the anvil. (The replacement door's strip
was pried off, breaking off both the hook and the retaining screw.)
At this point the door opened and closed well again, you could use a
finger to grab the latch release eye and pull the door open. The
inner lock mechanism worked fine. It no longer scraped at the front
as it opened. Pretty good for a first cut at the problem, I thought.

With this it was time to address the door handle itself. The
replacement, naturally, had no key and its weather door was long-gone.
But it was all there. The original was shattered into pieces, but its
key cylinder was untouched. (The actuating rod was bent, however.) I
found a bent siding trim nail in the metal recycling bin that looked
to be about the same diameter as the roll pin that holds the actuating
rod mechanism to the lock cylinder. I straightened that and had my
son hold the handle against a makeshift anvil while I drove the roll
pin out. (I had to straighten the nail a few times along the way.)
Once the pin was out the lock cylinder pulled straight out of the
handle. (Make sure the key is in the cylinder while you do this, and
don't lose the lock's torsion spring as it comes loose! If you remove
the key you could lose all the spring-loaded lock wafers, or at least
mix them all up and no longer be able to open the lock.) I then
cleaned the lock guts with brake cleaner, removing the dirt and grime.
I then re-lubricated the lock wafers with spray graphite lock lube.
We then took apart the replacement handle the same way. Its lock was
full of dirt and grunge, the missing weather door had obviously been
necessary.

I tried to straighten the bent operating rod, but it was pot metal and
broke, no surprise. The replacement had a differently-shaped end
where it engaged the latch, but seemed to work OK nonetheless. I put
the good handle back together with the original lock cylinder and the
replacement's operating rod, we reversed the anvil/roll pin operation.
Once it was together the key operated as it should, and I slipped the
handle into position. It worked! I then tightened the three screws.

At this point the door was fully operational, but still could use some
more cosmetic shaping of the metal, and the trim pieces repaired and
replaced.

never understood. I personally prefer closed cars. With all this talk
lately about transplanting engines, what I think would make a really cool

As you work the inside with your wooden hammer driven ram have your helper

Good luck.

BTW, in Nov '79, I'd had the new '80 240D 'bout 2 weeks. I was sawing
stiles for the kitchen cabinets in house that I had built. New 240D was
sitting in garage just outside the open double doors of the adjoining
workshop. I let the saw throw a 2-inch wide piece of wood into left rear
quarter panel of the car. Luckily, I was at home alone. I agonized for few
minutes about what to do about the significant ding in side of the BRAND NEW
car.  'Removed inner, side panel in trunk; 'wrapped towel around brick;
'held brick tightly to outside of dinged place; 'struck the inside of it
twice with hammer. Ding disappeared! 'Re-installed inner panel. 'Haven't
told SWMBO 'bout it yet.

This is the CW car, right?

Yes, the Chicken Wagon. Formerly faded and with one weird
surface rust patch (egg damage?), but almost completely straight
and rust-free. And 310kmi and purring like a kitten. Up 'til
now all it really needed was paint, and for me to install that
good dashboard I have for it.

Let the remaining damage be a reminder to the driver as they enter the
car?

Believe me, I've been thinking about that! Fortunately she
doesn't read this list. All of our recent 'wrecks' have
been with her at the wheel. Huh. I had one tire come apart
that did some damage, and there was that one suicidal dog, but
Shoe Goo put the grille right again... The non-rust bodywork
has so far all been on her. (SDL rear-ended, SDL T-boned by a
deer, 190D rear-ended, 300D slapped down that stop sign.
Fortunately no damage when she flew off the freeway
in the SL, but that one could have been _real_ bad.)
I wonder why I'm resistant to buying newer cars?

(and a set of roll pin punches, too bad Harbor Freight no longer has
them, and their pin punches tend to be too soft).

I have a pin punch or two, but nothing that small. I'd worry about
breaking off a tool steel punch anyway, and I've had extremely good luck
using nails for this kind of thing. You just have to straighten them
once in awhile, which makes them hardly different than many HF tools
as it is. Just one more use for a BFH anyway.

I think, however, in keeping with the spirit of the thing I'll
use another piece of firewood, maybe run it through the bandsaw

have a lot of chain-sawn blocks due to how we came about getting
the wood, it wouldn't take much to clean one of them up a bit.
Nice and solid!

What's the point [of a California coupe]?

If it's built without the soft top altogether there's more
room in the back seat area. Think SLC back seat instead
of SL back seat, though not with as much leg room I'm sure.

If you rarely _need_ a top at all that might be sort of
attractive. But only in select areas of the country.
Such as SoCal.

Our converted 250C is a California coupe. Except that
the hard top also leaks in the rain.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Bought a new computer monitor

2012-01-29 Thread Brian Toscano
The main reason for wanting to run 2560x1440 or 2560x1660 is that you can
have two full screen windows up at the same time. On my 17 laptop screen
which runs 1920x1200, I end up minimizing or sending one halfway off the
scene a lot of the time when I'm working on two documents at the same time.
Or if you're writing a program and have an editor in one window and a web
browser in the window. With a 27 running 2560x1440 this wouldn't be
necessary. I've put up with it for 4-1/2 years so its not a killer, but
for my next computer I'm seriously considered a smaller screen laptop with
a 27 or a 27 iMac.

On Sun, Jan 29, 2012 at 7:45 AM, Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com wrote:

clears the printer and scanner by ~1/2.
I can't see my needing any more real estate, I'm only using the left 2/3

IIRC this was one of the weirder products of the Renault/AMC

You're not going to see another one of these the next time you go

I see it's in Vancouver. Were those ever sold in USA?

Interesting.

I have seen a number of them around here for some reason, and when I have, I
never really paid that much attention, as I immediately lost interest.

I had a friend who wanted to buy one that asked me to do a PPI on it for him.
That's when I first discovered what they were and the differences between them
and a real convertible.

Add a few layers of masking tape to the backing block and you can often

I think there are two good solutions:

1) Wait (a long time) until a good crash free one appears on eBay and
exchange it. It happens, believe me.

2) Buy a black one and spray it blue.

Exchanging the dash is a lot of work, but not unreasonable or as bad as you
might think... you can do it in a few hours.

Once upon a time, I bought crack free blue dash for a W201 on ebay and
exchanged it... it was surprisingly easy. But with the dash removed, the
interior looks like a bomb went off it in and its somewhat intimidating!

how you secure it. I'd much rather buy a car with a few cracks in the blue

Re: [MBZ] OT: Bought a new computer monitor

2012-01-29 Thread clay monroe
A fine 21/22 inch screen will suffice for most of your computing needs. I
decided to invest in multiple monitors to increase my screen real estate.
Allows for multi-tasking such that each screen hosts its own mess, It has also
been a great way to get the lightbox for S.A.D. lumens. Have to tune the
screens into the bluer side of the spectrum.

I can't see my needing any more real estate, I'm only using the left 2/3 of

It may be different on a PC, but for Mac I prefer larger than 1920x1200

Re: [MBZ] OT: Bought a new computer monitor

2012-01-29 Thread Brian Toscano
Apple sells their 27 display for $900 or $1000 that also serves more or
less as a docking station. One cable bundle from the monitor for laptop
charging thunderbolt which will carries video along with everything else.
A few years ago their 30 was considerably more expensive. Even if you
have a 17 laptop, you could still drive a 27-30 display at 2560x1400 or
2560x1600 simultaneously(not mirrored). I did this at my friend's who has
the 30.

The Mac Mini is an interesting machine. A buddy of mine has one he uses as
a server. It has no local display, everything he he does with it is done
remotely. Based on the cost of an iMac vs MacMini, both with displays, I
think the iMac is a better value. $1700 vs roughly $2000 if you want
quad-core.

I really wish Apple would release something that is a combination of Time
Capsule and Apple TV. I can't justify spending so much on all these
separate units. Right now I use Time Machine with a local hard drive, a
phone company provided DSL router, and an Apple Airport Express for
streaming music. If the Time Capsule could stream music then I could
repurpose my existing Airport Express, return the phone company DSL router,
and get the local hard drive off my desk - replacing three devices with one.

As described below, it's a 107 chassis with a hardtop and tonneau cover for the
space under the hard top when removed. There is no soft top, nor is there a
frame for it.

It is essentially a coupe with a removable top, NOT a convertible.

I don't think many were made, and it's unlikely that you would see one unless
you live in a temperate part of the continent, like SoCal or Florida.

I just looked at my signed and numbered copy of John Olson's the SL

I have one of those velour mats on my dash in the 300D, and I think it

you would think. Using paypal, you are pretty safe, since the ebay/paypal duo
skew toward the buyer, and screw the seller out of cash in a dispute. You have
to spend a good two weeks pursuing the box you want. I have no idea what
prices are going now, with the rumors that Apple is going to kill the Pro,
since it is more machine than consumers need and has not had an update in two
years. When I was looking I set a limit of $750 including shipping for the
best system I could find. That seems to be the average threshold for a quality
Mac. They can be had for less, if you are diligent, but I was not heavy into
sniping and such, so just stuck with it until I got what I needed. CL is a
fine place to look as well. Around here they think the MacPro is made of
platinum, and price them stupid high. I have dual/dual core XEON 3.0. I

You can source a nice MacPro that is much more upgradable for the same

Boxy, maybe, but they had that strangely slopng rear end. One had to get
used to it.
Last one I had was a '82. Traded it in for a used 123 in '86 + a ton of
cash.
Resale value of these cars was zip.
When it comes to Ero's, here is my take:
Brits - non exist, barely
Germans - Over priced and over engineered
Italians - the very opposite (except for things on stroids and the latest
500 joke)
French - well made affordabele transportation devices
My $0.02.

Blue was always most prone to cracking. Must have something to do with the

For some reason color makes a difference. You'd think black would be
the worst but actually it's the blue ones. The dark brown dash in my

[MBZ] '98 SLk230 Roadster

2012-01-29 Thread Gerry Archer
Next time the list gets slow how about discussing the
'98 SLK230 roadster; opinions, etc?
There's a red one in a nearby town with a for sale sign on it
that looks to be in pretty good condition. Asking price
$10,000 but with taxes coming up, probably get it for less.
It has a four cylinder 16 valve turbo engine and is geared for
150 mph. Curb weight 3000 lb, mpg 22-26, 0-60 7 seconds.
With a 9.3-1 compression ratio, would likely require premium gas.

Seriously though, they sorta caught on in Europe because they have long

Re: [MBZ] BMW Diesels

2012-01-29 Thread E M
lol, I'll have to copy and save that one! :-)

Don't know about the cars though, there are a few I'd love to own. One of
my neighbours bought an old DS a few years back, and drives it in the
summer. I would love to have that car!!! So advanced for it's time, and
is still super cool today. For me, a DS over a Ferrari for coolness any
day! :-)

I think the French were pretty creative engineers over the years. They had
a hand in that plane, the Concorde, and as far as I know, they were the
first ones crazy enough to bolt a turbo to an F1 car engine. I saw one of
those engines once up close. They only lasted 2 hours, (about as long as
any of them lasted) but they were making 1000+ in race trim, and
1200-1400+? in qualifying trim. Not bad for 1.5 litres.

And even if you don't like their cars, all is forgive of them, once you
taste their wine and cheeses. Their girls are pretty cute too. ;-)

Convert the speedo to read in knots.

Put a bumper sticker on the car that reads: I'd rather be flying.

Develop a pre start inspection routine.

Maintain a drive log.

Make the missus guide you in and out of the garage with proper guide sticks.

Install an altitude meter in the car.

Paint an identification number on the side of the car.

Re: [MBZ] '98 SLk230 Roadster

2012-01-29 Thread Mitch Haley
'98s are the oldest ones. Would have to be absolutely perfect to merit a $10k
price tag, at least up around here in January. You're talking 320 AMG money (and
the AMG package had a five digit price tag when new IIRC)

I believe the 99s got Brake Assist System and the 2001s got
ESP, if you care about the dynamic safety features.

This one's been around since at least November:
http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/ctd/2806501406.html

I bet you could get this 320 for $7500 or 8k:

Jalopy:

I should take a look at this one, it's been around for a month now, but a
convertible is a summer car, and who wants one in Solar Collector Black?

Install lights on either side of the drive way.

Back when I was 16 and taking flight lessons, I installed an altimeter and
turn bank indicator in my '51 VW bug. The altimeter didn't move much, and
the TB pegged with most every bump and correction to stay in my lane. We
don't make many two minute turns in a car ---
