Re: [MBZ] overheating woes

ok

my daughter helped me holding a flashlight in the dark ( it's now a
chilly 83 at 2 am) and i reinstalled the thermostat.

I installed a new upper radiator hose which is a lot stiffer. We
filled the block and also the hose/radiator

i left the overflow tank radiator cap off we drove it 2 or 3
miles at about 60 with the defrost on and got lots of heat. Then we
ran the AC and temp was about 85 ish. Then we came home through town,
cruising with the ac on and temp was steady.

So what was wrong? probably too much air and not enough coolant.

I'll let you know if it makes the 250 miles to tybee island

thanks folks

Past couple of days did some work on the pagoda with a friend who drove up

[MBZ] overheating woes

2012-06-30 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

folks

it's only 101 at almost 9 pm in athens, ga.

I'm running my macbook on top of a cold pack or it crashes

cpu temps go up to 175 without it

My 123, 1982 300td is overheating. Yesterday i had a flat had 2
holes in the same 80% tread tire!! Had a hole in same tire about 3
weeks ago. Looked like thorns or splinters in the tire.

While that was going on in the 107f yesterday, car overheated. Got up
to about 125 C and at the tire place i noticed some coolant on the
ground and the hose to the thermostat housing had blown off and
hose clamp was gone

fixed that and put in about 5 qts of water

Today, i drove about 5 miles and temp climbed to 120c or a little more

let it rest and came home

when it was cool, pulled thermostat and boiled it on the stove. It
opens about 1/4 inch probably at about 80c which is marked on the good
german thermostat

it was installed with the round disc part toward the block and the
pointy end toward the radiator

i assume that is correct

i noticed the upper hose was collapsed should i replace that ...
i have a couple of new big hoses

do i need to burp it or something to get more water in the system

i was going to flush it with citric acid crystals that i have

how much should i use?

i need to drive it to savannah tomorrow

aux fan comes on

i don't think water pump is leaking it's only about 2 or 3 years
old and fan is spinning so we can hope the viscous clutch is good

ideas?

email ideas directly to me since i get the list in digest form

i see that at 9.30 the temp has cooled to 96f (air temp, not the car!!)

This is a 72 so it even has akward three pointers!

My oldest car at the moment is a 67 300SEL W109... it has the standard lap

problem. The car is just a few thousand dollars and some paperwork away
from being road worthy, so I don't have to worry about it anytime soon.

Might work OK to clear up any residual odor if you have solved the cause
of the problem and cleaned out any accumulated damp crud. Otherwise at
best it will be temporary relief.

[MBZ] The '95 E320 is back on the road

2012-06-30 Thread Craig
Once I got all the parts, putting the new water pump on and everything
back together was not too bad.

I did get a tube of Hylomar Advanced Formula and used that on the o-ring
sealed plate that goes over a machining hole on the back of the pump and
on the o-ring sealed connection between the pump and the block. The
o-ring for the plate fit tightly on the o-ring groove, so the Hylomar AF
wasn't necessary there. The o-ring for the pump to block connection,
however, was loose in its groove, so the Hylomar was quite necessary
there to keep the o-ring correctly positioned during assembly.

Before I took things apart, I was aware that a bearing was making noise.
I felt the bearing for the serpentine belt tensioner pulley and found
roughness, so I got a new one of those.

I'm not sure how thoroughly I checked the fan shaft bearing, but when I
put the fan pulley back on, I spun it by hand and heard bearing noise.
Oops. I guess I will be taking things apart again in the not too distant
future. At least this time, the heater water return pipe bolt won't be a
problem and I'll know what I'm doing.

I just have to find out from Rusty whether the bearing is available
separately, or if the bearing support plate has to be replaced (which is
definitely the easier, but more expensive, way).

It was unusual. We live 20 miles south of the VA-NC line near US-1. Last
night before midnight we had near hurricane-force north winds for maybe 20
minutes. The wind was 20-30 miles in front of the storm line, which was
very visible on radar. Unfortunately, we got zero precip here.

Check the drains. All other fixes are temporary. The drain tubes are foam
tubing with a coil of wire inside (to keep open) and preformed rubber
tubes/flanges at both ends (at least the ones in my 82 300sd were). They
should exit on one or both sides of the transmission hump. The can clog but
they also deteriorate in hot climates. Check the online parts site to see
if you have one or two. Locate the exits under the car. Shoot a little
compressed air into each exit tube to see if it's clogged and maybe unclog
it. These are not hard to replace if you don't mind lying on your back
under the dash; but you have to remove the under-dash panels, as a minimum.
I haven't been inside a 123 in a while.

Don't believe there are any filters until about the W210 chassis in 1996.
There are drain tubes though. And if the drains don't work, a moist mess

worse than to be expected for this time of year.

Southeast doesn't include Florida, just a bunch of Yankee relos down there.

104 at lunch, 107 at 6, 94 after sunset. Crazy humid, I was literally
dripping after being out for 20 minutes. Now we have a strong wind and
thunderstorm, sounds like we're beachside and the waves are going.

I was going to work on the SDL tomorrow, maybe I will just recharge the AC
in the 300D and work in the basement instead. :)

set in the 80s, lots of old mercs getting shot up and blown up in what was
supposed to be Oman. It's on Netflix. Also noticed quite a few in the
background in supposed shots of London and Paris.

Spray half a can of Lysol into the grille under the w/s with the
engine running and run the defroster. That will kill the odor.

I have seen a few old Mercs, some 126s in San Jose, but out here at the

The past few days here, we've been just topping 100 but unusually for
Indiana the humidity has been low and winds have been moderate so though
it's hot, it actually doesn't feel as bad as our normal
90-degree-90-percent-humidity summer weather.

The lack of any rain in June has been the bigger concern. It's either
tied for or is outright the driest June on record. It's very dry here
right now, many communities are canceling fireworks displays due to
concern about fire.

He's hardly the first pilot to crash a jet on landing or aborting a
landing, it's necessary to apply FULL power immediately and it takes
time for the engines to spool up. Jets usually glide like rocks,
while piston engined planes both respond to power application faster
and won't stall anywhere as easily at low speed.

I suspect the actual cause is flying past one's "best by" date --
sooner or later one's reaction times and ability to monitor all the
necessary radio "chatter" is gonna get you.

Same reason you don't see 70 year old race car drivers.

Don't believe there are any filters until about the W210 chassis in 1996.
There are drain tubes though. And if the drains don't work, a moist mess will
accumulate.
