Re: [MBZ] overheating woes
ok my daughter helped me holding a flashlight in the dark ( it's now a chilly 83 at 2 am) and i reinstalled the thermostat. I installed a new upper radiator hose which is a lot stiffer. We filled the block and also the hose/radiator i left the overflow tank radiator cap off we drove it 2 or 3 miles at about 60 with the defrost on and got lots of heat. Then we ran the AC and temp was about 85 ish. Then we came home through town, cruising with the ac on and temp was steady. So what was wrong? probably too much air and not enough coolant. I'll let you know if it makes the 250 miles to tybee island thanks folks xx rick On Jun 30, 2012, at 10:02 PM, Craig wrote: On Sat, 30 Jun 2012 21:28:58 -0400 Rick Hawkins Java wrote: folks it's only 101 at almost 9 pm in athens, ga. You cooked the lobsters in beer?? In addition to the lobsters we got a bucket full of mussels we picked off the lobster traps and lines. Will cook them tomorrow. In addition to lobsters we had sausage, dogs and zuchini on the BBQ. Washed it all down with some cheap beef- Natural Light and finished the night off with gourmet smores. This is a 72 so it even has akward three pointers! My oldest car at the moment is a 67 300SEL W109... it has the standard lap belts of the time. [MBZ] The '95 E320 is back on the road
Once I got all the parts, putting the new water pump on and everything back together was not too bad. I did get a tube of Hylomar Advanced Formula and used that on the o-ring sealed plate that goes over a machining hole on the back of the pump and on the o-ring sealed connection between the pump and the block. The o-ring for the plate fit tightly on the o-ring groove, so the Hylomar AF wasn't necessary there. The o-ring for the pump to block connection, however, was loose in its groove, so the Hylomar was quite necessary there to keep the o-ring correctly positioned during assembly. Before I took things apart, I was aware that a bearing was making noise. I felt the bearing for the serpentine belt tensioner pulley and found roughness, so I got a new one of those. I'm not sure how thoroughly I checked the fan shaft bearing, but when I put the fan pulley back on, I spun it by hand and heard bearing noise. Oops. I guess I will be taking things apart again in the not too distant future. At least this time, the heater water return pipe bolt won't be a problem and I'll know what I'm doing. I just have to find out from Rusty whether the bearing is available separately, or if the bearing support plate has to be replaced (which is definitely the easier, but more expensive, way). I'm close... maine lobsters were on sale at the market today... they're suffering... I mean, they're cooking right now. And oh yeah, it was mid 90s here, but the car thermometer suggested it was around 100 all day. Some MB content... I got bored driving modern stuff around all day, so I took my recent 4.5 acquisition for a ride to the market. I was happy to see it no longer runs hot after a good citric acid flush a few weeks ago. I just finished some brake work and servicing the transmission this week, so its finally "safe' to drive. I remember from my 123 days, there was a proceedure for getting rid of the locker room smell. It involved unloading an entire can of Lysol into the ventillation air intake with the a/c on hi. As soon as the can is empty, shut everything down and seal the car up for a while. Never tried it myself. But it sounds reasonable. Check the drains. All other fixes are temporary. The drain tubes are foam tubing with a coil of wire inside (to keep open) and preformed rubber tubes/flanges at both ends (at least the ones in my 82 300sd were). They should exit on one or both sides of the transmission hump. The can clog but they also deteriorate in hot climates. Check the online parts site to see if you have one or two. Locate the exits under the car. Shoot a little compressed air into each exit tube to see if it's clogged and maybe unclog it. These are not hard to replace if you don't mind lying on your back under the dash; but you have to remove the under-dash panels, as a minimum. I haven't been inside a 123 in a while. -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Mitch Haley Sent: Saturday, June 30, 2012 6:58 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] 1984 300CD, A/C odor Ralph Robertson wrote: > Is there a filter in the air system that can be cleaned or replaced to > correct minor odors from the A/C? > I have tried several methods to spray air cleaner, etc., thru the intake > but they only help temporarily. Howler, spider, and Capuchin monkeys disturbing the peace in the front yard, along with very noisy scarlet macaws. Rum is cheap, beer is frio, food is tasty, but alas homeward bound on Tuesday to the heat and workies again. Should anyone want to donate to a RichrelocatetoCostaRica fund, I can set one up. I have seen a few old Mercs, some 126s in San Jose, but out here at the edge of civilization 4WDs are the rule as the "road" can be quite marginal. You do get 4 free undercarriage washes each way in/out of town though, with nice clean fast-flowing mountain water. --R On 6/29/2012 11:45 PM, Tim C wrote: On Jun 29, 2012 10:59 PM, "Dan Penoff" wrote: What heat wave? I was going to work on the SDL tomorrow, maybe I will just recharge the AC in the 300D and work in the basement instead. :) Keep cool, Tim Central NC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

The past few days here, we've been just topping 100 but unusually for Indiana the humidity has been low and winds have been moderate so though it's hot, it actually doesn't feel as bad as our normal 90-degree-90-percent-humidity summer weather. The lack of any rain in June has been the bigger concern. It's either tied for or is outright the driest June on record. It's very dry here right now, many communities are canceling fireworks displays due to concern about fire. Re: [MBZ] NTSB faults Roush for 2010 Oshkosh crash
He's hardly the first pilot to crash a jet on landing or aborting a landing, it's necessary to apply FULL power immediately and it takes time for the engines to spool up. Jets usually glide like rocks, while piston engined planes both respond to power application faster and won't stall anywhere as easily at low speed. I suspect the actual cause is flying past one's "best by" date -- sooner or later one's reaction times and ability to monitor all the necessary radio "chatter" is gonna get you. Same reason you don't see 70 year old race car drivers. No filters in either of these models. I don't believe that there were cabin air filters until the late 90s. Ralph '84 300CD Don't believe there are any filters until about the W210 chassis in 1996. There are drain tubes though. And if the drains don't work, a moist mess will accumulate.
