Re: [MBZ] OT: Mobil wifi hotspot connections

2012-09-12 Thread Walt Zarnoch
I've got 4G-LTE through Big Red, and I get 14Mb down, 5Mb up.
That's indoors on the edge of service (1 bar, can't find a REAL dB value...).

I've tethered on 3G since before android was born, and it was ok, just
not as fast or useable as cable is.
The big issue is ping time and delay, or dropped packets.

You also need an unlimited plan (grandfathered in! WOOHOO!), or you
end up going over the 2GB cap quite quick.

My opinion: start simple and work to complicated. When you've fixed what you
know needs fixing, and completed all the simple and easy repairs, start working
up to complex.

Primer pump is toward the simple end, delivery valve seals toward the complex
end. Fuel tank strainer is toward the complex/hard end.

Jack up car so fuel tank strainer side is higher up. Less fuel spilled on
you that way. With an oil drain pan and a little patience the fuel tank
strainer is very easy to do and not really all that messy. Use rags to
hold it and unscrew so the rag catches the fuel.
Heck, on a 123 it is almost as easy to just temove the fuel tqnk so you
can check for plugged return and give it a good cleaning. Only takes about
30 mins to remove the tank.

Remove as much fuel as possible. The strainer is at the very
bottom and any left in the tank will run out onto the ground -
or you.

Find the bottom of the fuel tank.

Remove the hose from the hard line going forward. Have a
container to catch some of the fuel you left in the tank. If
the screen is plugged, not all will come out the hose.

Unscrew the fuel strainer. It is a very large hex. Water pump
pliers (channelocks) can work well.

Let the rest of the fuel in the tank run down your arm, soak
your shirt, and puddle under your back.

Put the new one in. Be sure the rubber seal is in place.
Tighten.

Attach the hose to the hard line.

Set up a tent in the back yard 'cause you won't be allowed back
in the house until you don't smell like raw diesel anymore.
Plan on a couple days.

Re: [MBZ] Removing glow plugs for compression test

2012-09-12 Thread Michael Canfield
I would also replace fuel lines before next test run. Or simply attach a
small motorcycle tank or the like under the hood and take it for a spin.
If the problem goes away then you know it is before the primer pump. If it
persists then it is at or after the primer.

..Remove as much fuel as possible. The

hose from the hard line going forward. Have a container to catch some of
the fuel you left in the tank. If the screen is plugged, not all will
come out the hose. Unscrew the fuel strainer. It is a very large hex.
Water pump pliers (channelocks) can work well. Let the rest of the fuel

The question regarded the $2 sucker, which is (at least for mine)
powered by a shop vac. The extraction fumes go through the vac, and
that would be a bit of concern, to me at least. But YMMV.

I recall my boss when I worked at the FBO summers, telling me about an
experience when he was flying helos in VN. Some crew chief ASSerted
that the turbine fuel could not explode so that the usual grounding
practices when refueling were not necessary, and my boss took exception
to that ASSertion. A coupla days later a helo exploded when the
refueler stuck the nozzle in without previously grounding things,
killing the refueler and destroying gummint property. The moral was
that being safe took little effort, and it was, well, safe.

I would be very worried about using a shop vac..run car til almost out
of fuel first so what is left can be caught in a large drain pan when you
pull off the hose. It is still running and doesn't stumble at highway
speed so I am betting the fuel strainer will let all of the fuel out when
you unhook the hose.

Another option is a long piece of fuel line into a can beside the car.
Unhook stock line, slip long one in its place and swap fuel cans as they
get full.

You can use a pair of vise-grips and a couple of washers (to spread out
the force) to pinch the stock line before you disconnect it from the hard
line that runs to the engine compartment. Once you have it disconnected,
you can put a jug under the free end, open the vise-grips until the jug
is full, close the vise-grips, change the jug, and repeat. Works great
with little spilled.

All this could very well just be a bad hose at the tank. Few people
change those, except the folks on this list. I have ended up
changing that on almost every MB I have owned somewhere around the
20-25 year old range. On #1 daughter's gasser, I paid rusty big
bucks for the OE hose to and from the rear fuel pump/filter and the
tank

There are two hoses at the tank. one to the engine and one return.

I would be very worried about using a shop vac..run car til almost out

I bought a simple had crank pump from Ace Hardware a number of years back
that work well for this type of work. The suction tube has a screened
weight at the pickup end that drops into the tank, crank away. It will
syphon once it's going.

I have a $15 sucker that uses air also. It is a $12 HF air/vacuum
box and an old chrome soda/vinegar fire extinguisher ($3). I have a
truck/tractor lock-on air chuck on the vacuum box on a short hose.
The chuck hooks onto the air fitting on the tank to evacuate the
tank. The hose from the tank fits nicely inside the dipstick on OM
engines equipped for sucking. In the FE handle, I drilled an extra
hole so I can use the safety pin to hold the valve open rather than
to prevent the valve form opening.

Hook it up, then plug in the air hose and suck away. When the oil
is out, unplug the air hose

TO empty the tank, I put the air chuck on the air hose and blow a
little air into the tank. with a gallon or 5 gallon used oil
bottle/can under the hose, open the valve and the tank self empties.
Putting too much air pressure in the tank can make it a bit messy,
but it works well otherwise.

No vacuum cleaner involved

Except if the strainer is plugged, it still won't empty the
tank. The fuel will stop running out when the level drops below
the lowest open spot.

Since the reason for this exercise is a poor running engine, if
the cause is indeed a gunked up intake screen it will not let
all the fuel run out.

Reminds me: In about '69, 'needed fuel one day to finish cutting grass in

panel of '65 Pontiac; easy to siphon; didn't need much; stuck small tube in

didn't quite make it first time; sucked a little harder; got little bit of
fuel in mouth, but lota fumes in lungs. Absolutely could not breath; 'knew
I was dead if I could not get small breath; just before passing out, I
forced myself to compress chest slightly with my arms and was able to suck
ever so slight bit of air through my nose with mouth closed; was then able
to get just slightly bigger bit of air, then a little more, etc., until I
had expelled the fumes and saved my a$$ right there in the driveway. SWMBO
never knew that I was almost "gone;" embarrassed to tell her then;
embarrassed to tell you now, but if it'll help keep somebody else from doing
such a stupid thing, maybe I can stand it.

Invest in an electronic fuel pump from your local FLAPS. Low pressure cheap
one is good enough, a few feet of fuel hose, tap into the fuel delivery
hose from the tank where it comes out in engine bay. 12V pump will run on
your battery charger [you have one don't you?] plug it all together, put
the outlet hose from the pump in suitable container and pump the tank
dry THEN... open the bottom if the strainer is clogged... reverse
the pump and pump about a gallon of fresh fuel INTO the tank to "blow" the
crud away from the strainer... then pump it down... should end up with very
little fuel in the tank that way... worth the cost of owning an electric
pump.

IIRC Mythbusters sucked up a half gallon of gas into a shopvac, and
left it run for quite a while without any "boom".

Diesel, being harder to ignite due to the vapor pressure difference,
should at least be as safe.

Still gives me the heebie jeebies thinking about sucking that stuff up though...

No. This could be your current problem (leaking primer pump). I'd
replace that and the glow plugs (don't forget to ream the glow plug
holes, flattened glow plug would do the trick) and if the idle quality
gets better, drive on and don't worry about the compression. All these
problems may have carboned the rings and pre-chambers and valve seats,
and now you need to burn that off to get a valid compression test.

A dose of diesel purge might also be called for.

Plan on a couple days.

quality gets better, drive on and don't worry about the
compression. All these problems may have carboned the rings and
pre-chambers and valve seats, and now you need to burn that off to
get a valid compression test.

A dose of diesel purge might also be called for.

No. This could be your current problem (leaking primer pump). I'd
replace that and the glow plugs (don't forget to ream the glow plug

forced myself to compress chest slightly with my arms and was able to suck

Bargain leads from Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/100MHz-Oscilloscope-Clip-Probes-Accessory/dp/B0030KWM30

When you need a 'scope there's not much else that will do the
job. However, they can be handy for any number of task where
they're not required.

But if you don't know how to use it, it will probably not get
used much - until you learn.

A T922 is pretty old. Google says 15 MHz. That's enough for
very basic stuff. Probably nearly all automotive needs except
for ECM internals. But like any tool, "big" is better, and no
matter what size it is, Murphy says you'll find a task that need
higher frequency, higher voltage, more traces, etc. *smiles*

$150 is about the entry price for computer 'scopes. These
depend on the computer screen for displaying. Handheld LCD
screen 'scopes start at about $200.

Conclusion. If you have a clue how use one - or want to learn,
$20 sounds like a fine price. It may be all you need. If you
out grow it, view it as cheap education.

No mention was made of bedding the brakes in?
Recently put some ATE ceramics pads on the rear with new rotors,
instructions for bedding in brakes where very specific and lenghty,

My wife reported that the brakes in the 190D "made a noise and then got

aren't the same because when I tried it the right front wheel made an
ungodly racket. It'd had a hardened spot on the rotor for some time so
I'd already ordered new rotors and pads. Yesterday I installed.

Remember a couple weeks ago I asked about replacing the rotor without
pulling the hub? A year or two ago I'd done the bearings on the
passenger front and the rotor kept falling off as I tried to set the
preload. Well yesterday that &^%$@#! rotor wouldn't come off for love
nor money. I had to pull the hub and balance it on two 2x4s and beat
the hub out of the rotor. On that side the pads fell out of the caliper
when I pulled it, neither had any friction material to speak of.

On the other side one of the big bolts that holds the caliper on would
NOT come off. I resorted to the heat wrench which is hard because the
small bolts have a little rubber bellows thing on them, I didn't
realize at the time I could take rubber bellows thing off. On that side
the pads were fine... I*think* when I did the bearing I got grease on
the rotor which created the hardspot and ruined the pads. So it goes.

Rusty sent me ceramic pads, I don't remember what brand he said they
were but they were in a Textar box. Apparently Akebono doesn't have an
application for a 190D. The rotors he sent (I spec'd the cheap PBR ones
which I had used on my '83 240D with success) are very nice and thick.
They weigh about twice the ones I took off and are marked "Made in
Germany" on the rim.

My wife is VERY pleased with the new brakes and much more confident in
the car and my abilities. The latter is of course a nice feeling.

A friend of mine nearly died from inhaling diesel fuel into his lungs.
Apparently there is no way for the doctors to clean it out of your lungs
and the algae and bacteria the diesel contains are the actual risk rather
than the fuel so his doctor told him. Doc said as far as he knew no one
who inhaled the new ULSD fuel when siphoning had survived until Artie.
Damn lucky his Doc said. Lethal stuff.
