Re: [MBZ] OT: chain saws

2013-05-12 Thread Curt Raymond
When we moved into the house (just over 6 years ago) I bought a Husqvarna 445
(I think its a 445 anyway) which is (was) the top end of the homeowner line. It
uses the smaller chain and interestingly has a plastic bottom end which makes
it very light, mine has an 18 bar although it'll supposedly handle 20. I paid
right around $300

A year later Dad bought a cheapo Poulin at Walmart for something like $80. It
the definition of cheap, cheap all over.

Mine is the best saw I've ever had, Dad's is junk.

When I bought it I very nearly went up one model (450?) but it was nearly $100
more. When I'm cutting a lot I wish I had, most times I don't.

Just yesterday I noticed that Tractor Supply switched from Husqvarna to
Jonsered. AFAIK Jonsered makes good saws but doesn't have much for name
recognition, at least around here...

I have a fairly wooded lot and have decided I need to get a chain saw to
keep it maintained. I checked local CL and surprisingly didn't find
much.

Needs to be gas-powered, too large a lot for electric to be practical.

Don't really know much about them. I don't need anything
lumberjack-quality, but don't want a piece of junk either. It's
probably something I will only use a few times a year. Maybe should
just rent one as needed?

[MBZ] How I spent my Saturday

2013-05-12 Thread Curt Raymond
HEAD GASKET
Need I say more?

Of course I do.
Yesterday Fred, Dwight, Dimitri and I managed to get a head gasket into my '78
240D. I started pulling parts at about 7:30am (radiator, shroud, hoses, etc)
and ended with Fred and I starting the engine at 10:30pm so I could back the
nose out of the garage so I could shut the door for the night.

Interestingly we only needed one trip out which was actually just for a tap to
chase the threads in one head bolt hole.

Theres loads of pictures and even some video. I'll get them up on Photobucket
over the next couple days.

I'm surprised that I can move pretty well today. If I can find time among
mother's day duties I'll get the radiator reinstalled and get some coolant in
there so I can prove that this repair actually fixed the problem...

I've had the chain come off the bar, come around and pop me one on the hand,
wear gloved while cutting.

I suspect this is why the enviro-weenies spiked trees in the '80s, that might
cause the chain to break but I agree as with most chains it should give loads
of advance warning before actually breaking.

Husqvarna, Jonsered and Poulan went under the same ownership some time ago.

IIRC, Electrolux spun off the outdoor power equipment division a few years ago
and the parent company is named Husqvarna again.

In recent years, Jonsered were red Huskies, usually with minor differences like
a more perpendicular handlebar angle. That allowed the guys who liked an angled
handlebar to buy Husky and the ones who liked a straighter bar to buy Jonsered,
while getting the same quality saw. It also allowed pro saw shops to carry
Jonsered without all the people who bought Huskies at TSC trying to come in for
warranty service.

Husqvarna is repositioning their various chainsaw names, so that might be
subject to change. I hope the Jonsered name doesn't go downmarket like Poulan
did. I just checked the Jonsered web site, it still has the pro saws listed,
like the 2153 (equals Husky 346XP) and 2171.

In this area you can't cut down an oak tree without a permit and approval from
the County. Oaks are a locally protected species.

We have one next to our driveway that was planted when the house was built
around 1998/9.  It's causing the driveway slab to heave from the root
expansion.  That's one way to get an exception from the rule.

I hate like heck to cut any mature tree down, but this one is trashing my
driveway and it makes a mess almost all year round with the leaves it is
constantly dropping.

Time to call in a professional and have it removed.  No way I would try and
take something this big down - the top of the crown is probably 45'.

Re: [MBZ] OT: chain saw danger

2013-05-12 Thread G Mann
You might investigate a root prune proceedure, and preserve the tree.

A competent nurseryman would be required, as well as excavation of the
offending roots, and likely removal of the damaged driveway area. Once
access is gained to the roots at or near ground level, they are then
pruned, much like you would do an overhanging limb. The tree, if healthy,
has much deeper root structures [certainly with a 45 ft canopy] and will
not be impaired by the proceedure... only your wallet will be.. but
possibly less than fighting city council for oak tree removal approval.

Just a thought.

In this area you can't cut down an oak tree without a permit and approval
from the County. Oaks are a locally protected species.

We have one next to our driveway that was planted when the house was
built around 1998/9.

No way I would try
and take something this big down - the top of the crown is probably 45'.

I have a very competent tree guy who has been doing this for many years, and is
a certified arborist to boot. He's going to come over next week some time to
take a look at it and offer suggestions.

The only exemption for the removal of a mature oak is for damage to the
sidewalk, driveway or foundation. It's pretty easy to do, just provide
pictures that show the location of the tree and the displacement of the slab.

Silver Maple is pretty and grows fast, but it's a little on the brittle side.
The original owner of my house cut a pair of 30 silver maples for firewood just
before the bank took the house from him. A neighbor thinks it was terrible to
destroy those two big beautiful trees. I'm just glad I don't have two giant

Any chainsaw should have the gas tank empties and run dry. I have a
30 YO chainsaw that i took to the shop once, just 'cuz I figgered it
was time after 30 years.

Mix the gas ratio carefully and consistently. Don't put the mixed
gas in your saw if it smells old.

These two are for ppl like me who use a saw only on occasion:
Dump out any gas that is left over when the job is done. Then run
the saw out of gas before storing.

That's the only way my saw made it 30 yrs without seeing a shop. I
wanted to have a kit put in the carb before the saw guy retired to
kicked the bucket. SO, it should be good for the next 30 yrs...

Re: [MBZ] deer in georgia

2013-05-12 Thread Dieselhead

Our deer are large enough.

I've hit three with my 300td

One was mostly just grill and headlight doors, the next was AC
condenser and fan and grill, headlights, and some damage to radiator
as well (I glued it up and used it pressurized for another year) as
tweaking the lip of the hood and bending the radiator support a
bunch and bending the fan.

Heavy enough!

Then there was the one last month that busted my driver's side
window and showered me with glass and busted the mirror glass.

By the way, the double sided tape is holding the replacement glass fine

thanks,

Those are pansy a** road rats. The deer around here do a min of
$4000 damage, and generally more than that. You are in a for a frame
shop as well as the hood and fenders, grill, lights etc. THest are
close to 200lbs dressed.

Our old van was totalled after hitting the 4th road rat. Ins. paid
$4000+ and I bought a replacement with 100k miles less for $2000.

Yes before the Great Change I was in communication with Rusty about

There are different types, get me your vin# and I can tell you what type

That is assuming that nobody ever switched in a different type of
regulator. Safest way is to take out the old regulator and take
pics, then take out the motor and count teeth etc. There are cast
racks and stamped racks and more variations

[MBZ] Low Oil Pressure W124 2.5 Turbo Diesel

2013-05-12 Thread Rick Knoble
Hi All,

A question for the group. Last night on the way to work, the oil pressure on my
'92 300D dropped
from 3 bar pegged to a little over 2 bar, while driving 60 mph. (Tach is on the
todo list). At idle, warm, it
is BELOW one bar. That is WAY too low, I know that. When cold it runs where it
is supposed to, but as it warms up the pressure
drops. That is normal, just low. The following is my list of possible causes.
Comments PLEASE...

1. Failed o-ring(s) on oil filter stem.

2. Schumtz in the oil pickup from somewhere (vacuum pump, timing chain guides,
etc.)

3. Failed oil pump.

Ideas?

Pictures of gauges (Low oil pressure, failed tach, failed odometer...)

Verify that the pressure is indeed low and you don't just have a bad
pressure sender unit!

Mine did something similar, then dropped to zero and sat there.
Replaced the sender, works fine.

It is also possible to dislodge an internal seal in the oil filter,
which will drop the oil pressure quite a bit.

I prefer a body putty knife, which is plastic and won't do any damage to metal
parts. Great for removing exterior trim, too.

Re: [MBZ] Low Oil Pressure W124 2.5 Turbo Diesel

2013-05-12 Thread Dieselhead
Try replacing the oil pressure sensor first. They are electronic
and do go bad. I thought my '87 wagon had abnormally low pressure
at hot idle, and so replaced the sensor and then it read 1.5 bar or
higher.

Since its time for an oil change, I might try changing oil and
filter first. I keep those on hand, while it would take a week to
get a sensor from Q.

What brand of filter do you use? If it is Mann, Knecht or similar,
there should be no problem. Even a Wix in nowhere near as good as a
german one. With 'merkun engines, Wix is the best generally. More
likely to have a filter failure with a 'merkun brand filter.

After you have the liner off, close the roof, then the roof panel
comes off with 4 bolts a-I-r.

Re: [MBZ] Redneck body work

2013-05-12 Thread Max
From foggy memory... (best consult the service manual)

If similar to a 124, open sunroof about 3/4. On the leading edge, the interior
lining is held in place by four pins pushed into plastic receptacles in the
metal sunroof frame. If you've ever taken the door lining off a VW beetle,
same thing.

Using a plastic or wooden wedge, force the lining down at the leading edge.
The pins will pop out. Once you have the edge free, pull the lining forward
and out if the way.

Then just a couple of bolts on each side hold the metal sunroof skin to the
bridge that goes fore and aft to move the roof. You may have to move the
sunroof all the way forward to see them.
