[MBZ] 2004 MB E320 B Pillar Question

2013-09-06 Thread Robert Koziak
Hi,

I have been working for several months to fix minor issues on my used 2004
E320 4matic..the labor of love! My latest project is replacing the
interior lower passenger side B pillar trim due to the fabric getting frayed.
It is a two tone trim with black on the lower section (this is the damaged
section) and light gray on the upper section. I found one on EBAY in good
condition for a reasonable price and it arrived yesterday as one piece.

My problem is that the one that arrived has a vent in the upper section
(facing the rear) and mine has no vent. I assume that the vent is part of an
option that my car does not have or the fact that the donor car was an E500
which might have a different option. Anyone familiar with this? I am about
to scan the manual.

I want to find out if I can use only the lower section (damaged) can be
changed and keep my upper section with no vent. Input from someone who
replaced a B pillar trim would be greatly appreciated before I start my
project Input from the list on prior projects has saved hours of frustration
and wasted time.

Thanks,

Bob

As many of you know I have the 300D back on the road after a long battle
with the injection pump(s). Almost as soon as it hit the road the AC would
not blow ice cold and the 2 year old Behr compressor took a dump. I
purchased a new compressor, dryer, and valve from Gary and replaced them
yesterday. it seemed to be working great except I could not get any ice
cold air through the vents. Turns out one of the wires broke off the
connector on the mono valve and I was getting full heat all the time. I
temporarily clamped the offending wire in place and like magic I had ice
cold air. With the mystery solved I came home after work today intending
to solder the wire back on the connector. I readied my tools and solder,
pulled the plug apart and attempted to remove the offending connector. As
soon as turned it over in my hand the connector fell out and lodged
somewhere in the engine bay presumably in a place from which it will return
only after I have the replacement. I looked high, low, upside down and
sideways for the connector for over 30 minutes without success. It being

2013-09-06 Thread MG
Sadder part is that Mercedes, according to Tom
Hansen at the Classic center, is no longer going
to support or supply parts for a lot of the older
cars once the stock on hand runs out. These
include the w123, w124, w126 and at that point I
forget the rest but there was a long list. The
justification is that Mercedes does not consider
them as classics as there were too many made. When
they set the classic center up they were only
thinking of the few more rare cars. Sports models
and such.

Short barrel .38 cal revolver. I was a NUCLEAR weapons expert, not a
FIREARMS expert, but the firearms instructors called 'em police
specials.

Sometimes during our qualification exercises with the .38, we were advised
that it may be better to throw it at 'em and run rather than try to hit
anything with a bullet, or maybe the noise would scare 'em for a few

Sachs/Boge and Bilstein are pretty much interchangeable and pretty
much the same quality (and price). You should be fine with them.
Stay away from the cheap stuff, and when installing, only tighten
the
top nut enough to take the free play out of the rubber, don't run
them
down until you can't turn them any more. Doing so will take all
the

IIRC, they just identified the W140 chassis as classic earlier this year.

tappet folks (like the old truck crowd) and the high performance folks. The
latter have all gone to diesel and motorcycle oils (and big money race
oil). The old truck guys at least seem to have concluded that the oil
available today, even with its lowered ZDDP levels is still so much better
than the average oil of the '50s, '60s and '70s that it probably doesn't
 matter.

It'd be interesting to know if that means anything for the Mercedes crowd.
No flat tappets in '70s and later MB gassers I'd bet...

A little googling shows an interesting disagreement around the interwebs.
Apparently although M1 5w40 doesn't meet 505.1 it might just be a failure of
anybody to actually test it against 505.1. It seems some enthusiasts don't
trust 5w30 to protect the cam and are using 5w40 because of its higher sheer
strength. It'd be interesting to know why the 5w40 isn't 505.1

Any 505.1 5w40 oils are EXPENSIVE, like $10/qt...

Heres a tip for the future, if the belt is missing the AC is broken, its that
simple. If it worked they'd put a belt on it, its the easiest (or second

I bought a 300D where I couldn't test the AC becuase the belt was broken
(missing).  Guess what?  It also needed a new compressor, which the POS PO
probably knew but didn't disclose to me.  He probably severed and removed
the belt to provide a pretext..

A little googling shows an
interesting disagreement around the interwebs. Apparently although M1
5w40 doesn't meet 505.1 it might just be a failure of anybody to
actually test it against 505.1. It seems some enthusiasts don't trust
5w30 to protect the cam and are using 5w40 because of its higher sheer
strength. It'd be interesting to know why the 5w40 isn't 505.1

Any 505.1 5w40 oils are EXPENSIVE, like $10/qt...

I don't see how you can generalize about Monroe: they make everything from
stiff truck shocks to what I'd call traditional American shocks ( very
little damping for that floaty watered ride).

Don't know what [KYBs] are like in
Japanese cars, depends on what the

 whole different game.

I asked because I just replaced the factory shocks in my new-to-me LS400,
which were shot at 120K mi, with new KYB GR-2s (1/3 the price of OE from
the Lexus dealer and supposedly the same). The car now rides and handles
like a slightly mushier 124, which I think is pretty much what Toyota was
shooting for.

Everything I heard and researched indicated that oil is especially critical in

Grant,
Yes, there are many of us that still use AOL. And the news and other things
aren't as good since Ms. Huffington took it over. AOL does not like the excess
activity generated by some lists and thus throttle or even shut it down. The
other list had problems with AOL for those reasons. I still use it because
it's good for sending pictures, etc. It is free also an has excellent built in
security and spam controls. Most of these lists, as with this one, generate
large email files because some members seem to want to duplicate an email
string for the past month rather than just commenting with their new email.
Personally, this list recently has been rather guilty of long copied comment
responses, lack of accurate subjects lines as the content changed but not the
subject line, etc.
I guess all things internet are somewhat guilty of not being as good as they
could be if only a little effort were applied.
As for MB content, I've always used Mobil Delvac 15x40 dino in my two 617s with
no ill affects and both are high mileage.

the chinese are famous for cheating every spec. it hasn't stopped them
from ruling hte world, so it's probably a good plan

so if the spec calls for a dog food to be 20% protein, they'll use 10%
protein and spike it with coal dust as that will make it read over 20%.
kill your dog? kill your baby? they have discovered that americans don't
care about any of that as long as it is a nickel cheaper

this outrage is all consumer driven. we got what we asked for

I bought a 300D where I couldn't test the AC becuase the belt was broken

Re: [MBZ] Front shocks for 300TD

2013-09-06 Thread Peter Frederick
No, actually what you get is very stiff compression to control the
wallowing body roll resulting from lacking a sway bar, and no
resistance on extension. The result is a hard ride with lots of noise
and excessive rocking and undulation. The combination is horrible,
but was standard on American cars for decades, at least up into the
90s if not longer.

My most recent experience was a couple years ago in Tallahassee, where
I rented a Chevy Malibu for the weekend. Yuck, same old feel every
ripple in the road but drop into every hole, shocks knocking on
suburban streets, huge turning radius. I won't comment on the
interior, but I was NOT impressed by the ride or handling.

As luck would have it, I had a clamp on terminal connection I put on in

minutes later, it started. Tonight I will recrimp and solder the

Save it if you have storage. It would be ideal to get a factory
replacement engine, and have that one as a core. Or have it reconditioned

Follow the wires and see if they are connected and have a good

You might try Mercedes for the third light. If they don't have it

Re: [MBZ] My Next Mercedes Diesel

2013-09-06 Thread MG
Really? Try to get a dashboard for a W123 since they are all
starting to crack. Mercedes doesn't have them neither does anyone
else. I need two for a w123. Not available and no plans to make
any more. Try getting the spare tire holder for a TD. One of
those parts that rusts out at the bottom along with the floor
plate there. The floor plate you can still get but not the spare
tire holder. As the parts run out at MB for any of those cars
that's the end. Unless the aftermarket suppliers step up and
produce them. I can't remember how many parts I have tried to get
for my 123s the last year only to be told over and over that they
will no longer be available. Yes you can still get the common
repair stuff due to after market. Soon however you won't find
them at MB. AS far as that goes I just bought an accelerator
linkage bracket for the firewall on the 123. Got it from MB, no
MB number or star on it. Think about that for a bit.

My thought is that someone up there at MB came along and decided
that there were to many of those cars, E-class, and if they keep
producing parts a lot of people would keep driving them. On the
other hand if those people can't get the parts then they would
have to junk them and buy a new Mercedes. More money, always
follow the money to find out why.

Manfred

From: Dan Penoff d...@penoff.com

If that is the case, why are they designating cars as classics?

IIRC, they just identified the W140 chassis as classic earlier
this year.

I would think that with the volume of W123 and W124 models out
there that third party parts suppliers are doing a good job
keeping up with what is needed.

Re: [MBZ] Front shocks for 300TD

2013-09-06 Thread Peter Frederick
Every vehicle equipped with Monroe shocks I've driven or ridden in
rode like it had solid rubber blocks installed instead of shocks.
Very hard, with no rebound control. Heavy duty are MUCH harder --
there was a pair on the rear of my 280SE when I got it and the rear
wheels would leave the ground going over railroad tracks. I replaced
them with some used shocks from a 1965 280S, vastly better.

They used to be advertised as giving you better control --
Amerispeak for very stiff to reduce body roll back in the day.

They are very low price, need I say more?

As Hans says, a brand new set of Gabriels or Monroes will ride and
knock pretty much just like the worn out Bilsteins you took off.
