Re: [MBZ] DIY NAS with FreeNAS
On Tue, May 13, 2014 at 7:22 PM, Dan Penoff d...@penoff.com wrote: All good points and well taken. The DIY NAS I am looking to build would use a mini-ATX board and a fan less CPU. Asus and a couple other people make these. At that rate with 4-6 drives that can spin down when idle power would max out at maybe 40-50 watts. Sounds good. I was envisioning a repurposed computer, but that makes sense, Fan control would be interesting, those drives will generate a lot of heat. One thing I failed to mention was the ability to use ZFS. I consider it superior when it comes to data integrity, and it's a lot more efficient than other formats from what I understand. One I agree with ZFS if you can. Very CPU and RAM intensive, as I understand it, but it is a good alternative to proprietary enterprise storage. drawback I do see is that FreeNAS and ZFS don't allow for changes to the array after the fact without some serious command line and under the hood work. That's not a big deal to me, as I It will never be big enough... That said, you only have to go under the hood every few years, so I'm sure you'll be okay. FreeNAS also allows snapshots, which I haven't seen in a consumer or prosumer grade NAS at a realistic price point. I'd have thought anything that supported ZFS would have snapshots. I have no idea how many NAS systems support ZFS, though, since it would require a pretty beefy controller. I'm not totally convinced this is the way to go, but I'm leaning that way. I may choose to accumulate the pieces over the next few months as finances permit and have a go at it. It sounds like a nice system, and the incremental acquisition model is a good one. I am just moving my stuff to embedded where I can - I even gave up ZFS for FAT32 because I'm too lazy to maintain another computer. By the time I get home I'd rather work on the SDL if I have free time. :) Best, Tim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Its paint is beginning to be a bit embarrassing; for 35 years, I've painted it the color of the tow vehicle of the time: bronze in '79 to match top of '74 Plymouth van, blue in '89 for '87 Dodge Caravan, red in '96 for '95 Dodge Caravan, ivory in '04 for '81 300D and red (burgandy) again for interior and stripe on outside of '87 300D. Started to paint it white to match the '87 300D, but it sits outside in the weather and under trees all the time, and I thought white on it would look too grungy too fast - the ivory didn't work out very well for that - so I painted it same as the 124 interior. Some places in the red are flaking/spalling and beginning to show spots of the old colors. Yep, I've noticed that, too, but I'll leave those to you sports. ;) Wilton - Original Message - From: Hendrik and Fay heni...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Thursday, May 15, 2014 11:29 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Fw: Trailer wheeling Hmmnh, looks like there is plenty of room for some mighty big 22 wheels. [MBZ] FlightSim laptop
Hi Mitch, Finally settled tentatively on a 17.3 HP laptop that meets all the requirements for smooth operation of FlightsimX: HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition 17.3 Laptop - 2nd generation Intel Quad Core i7-2670QM (2.2 GHz) / 1GB GDDR5 Radeon Graphics / 8GB DDR3 System Memory / 750GB 5400RPM Hard Drive / Blu-ray player SuperMulti DVD burner / Beats Audio / 2 USB 3.0 Couldn't find any complaints about it on the web other than the camera images being of questionable quality and a complaint about the sound system from an audio pro who liked the computer otherwise. There were several kudos, though. HP says this is a discontinued item, but Amazon and several others seem to have several in stock. First looked at a slightly less powerful laptop with a touch-screen. Still haven't figured out what the advantages of having a touch-screen would be. Have you or anyone had or heard of good or bad experiences with used laptops from Amazon? New ones from Amazon are $1300; used are $900. Very CPU and RAM intensive, as I understand it, but it is a good alternative to proprietary enterprise storage. From the information I saw on the 'Net, making hashes of everything and then checking and rechecking them on read, it would be very CPU and RAM intensive. A fanless processor might make data access rather slow. It sounds like a nice system, and the incremental acquisition model is a good one. I am just moving my stuff to embedded where I can - I even gave up ZFS for FAT32 because I'm too lazy to maintain another computer. By the time I get home I'd rather work on the SDL if I have free time. :) You mean after working on computers all day long, you don't want to continue to work on them at home, too? :-) Craig ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] fingering FlightSim laptop
That's so you can get fingerprint marks all over the screen. Seriously though, modern OS use touch screen technology as an extra input system. So instead of using the touch pad or a mouse you use your fingers on the screen to navigate around the OS. Also there are hybrid laptops, where the screen detaches from the keyboard, so it can be used as a tablet or as a more traditional lap top. This is handy for those who need to type a lot but also need to take the tablet part with them without the clutter of a keyboard.
