Sounds good. I was envisioning a repurposed computer, but that makes
sense, Fan control would be interesting, those drives will generate a lot
of heat.

One thing I failed to mention was the ability to use ZFS. I consider it

I agree with ZFS if you can. Very CPU and RAM intensive, as I understand

It will never be big enough... That said, you only have to go under the

FreeNAS also allows snapshots, which I haven't seen in a consumer or

I'd have thought anything that supported ZFS would have snapshots. I have
no idea how many NAS systems support ZFS, though, since it would require a
pretty beefy controller.

I'm not totally convinced this is the way to go, but I'm leaning that way.
I may choose to accumulate the pieces over the next few months as finances

It sounds like a nice system, and the incremental acquisition model is a
good one. I am just moving my stuff to embedded where I can - I even gave

time I get home I'd rather work on the SDL if I have free time. :)

MB trailer photos attached.

Actually, it's made from a mid-to-late '30's Ford pickup cargo bed.  Haven't
been able to pin down exact year.  Bed is a heavy gauge steel (much heavier
than modern).  I replaced axle, springs and wheels about 15 years ago.  I
also added tri star and MB wheel covers then; they make it a great
conversation piece.

Its paint is beginning to be a  bit embarrassing; for 35
years, I've painted it the color of the tow vehicle of  the time: bronze in
'79 to match top of '74 Plymouth van, blue in '89 for '87 Dodge Caravan,
red
in '96 for '95 Dodge Caravan, ivory in '04 for '81 300D and red (burgandy)
again for
interior and stripe on outside of '87 300D.  Started to paint it white to
match the '87 300D, but it sits outside in the weather and under trees all
the time, and I thought white on it would look too grungy too fast - the
ivory didn't work out very well for that - so I painted it same as the 124
interior.  Some places in the red are flaking/spalling and beginning to
show
spots of the old colors.

driver side had a leak that could be patched with a welder. I had seen
emissions coming out of the underside of that hole and figured it would be
simple. Today I bit the bullet and hit Meineke. Manager got me right on
the lift and had the welder dude drop a bead all the way around. Job done,
manager give it to me as a freebie.

Re: [MBZ] 123 wheel cover

2014-05-15 Thread clay
Having collected far too many hub caps for these cars, the condition is less
than pretty on all but one or two. Too much road rash and curb scuffing to be
useful for all the pretty cars getting restored. Bunch of SE and other flavors
of that era will want pristine ones for car shows.

 used ones look new.

[MBZ] FlightSim laptop

2014-05-15 Thread arche...@embarqmail.com

Hi Mitch,
Finally settled tentatively on a 17.3 HP laptop that meets all the
requirements for smooth operation of FlightsimX:

HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition 17.3 Laptop - 2nd generation Intel Quad
Core i7-2670QM (2.2 GHz) / 1GB GDDR5 Radeon Graphics / 8GB DDR3 System
Memory / 750GB 5400RPM Hard Drive / Blu-ray player SuperMulti DVD
burner / Beats Audio / 2 USB 3.0

Couldn't find any complaints about it on the web other than the camera
images being of questionable quality and a complaint about the sound
system from an audio pro who liked the computer otherwise. There were
several kudos, though.

HP says this is a discontinued item, but Amazon and several others seem
to have several in stock.

First looked at a slightly less powerful laptop with a touch-screen.
Still haven't figured out what the advantages of having a touch-screen
would be.

Have you or anyone had or heard of good or bad experiences with used
laptops from Amazon? New ones from Amazon are $1300; used are $900.

I agree with ZFS if you can. Very CPU and RAM intensive, as I
understand it, but it is a good alternative to proprietary enterprise
 storage.

From the information I saw on the 'Net, making hashes of everything and
then checking and rechecking them on read, it would be very CPU and RAM
intensive. A fanless processor might make data access rather slow.

It sounds like a nice system, and the incremental acquisition model is a
good one. I am just moving my stuff to embedded where I can - I even
gave up ZFS for FAT32 because I'm too lazy to maintain another
computer. By the time I get home I'd rather work on the SDL if I have
 free time. :)

You mean after working on computers all day long, you don't want to
continue to work on them at home, too? :-)

Re: [MBZ] fingering FlightSim laptop

2014-05-15 Thread Hendrik and Fay

That's so you can get fingerprint marks all over the screen.
Seriously though, modern OS use touch screen technology as an extra
input system.
So instead of using the touch pad or a mouse you use your fingers on the
screen to navigate around the OS. Also there are hybrid laptops, where
the screen detaches from the keyboard, so it can be used as a tablet or
as a more traditional lap top. This is handy for those who need to type
a lot but also need to take the tablet part with them without the
clutter of a keyboard.
