When we were rewiring our house in Los Alamos and changing from a 60 A

electrician install a manual transfer switch that does exactly what you

cannot calculate an incremental cost.

I think maybe their FB posting or something last night or yesterday some
time. Great vid though, I downloaded it and will watch it later on the
big screen with the amp cranked up to hear that engine!

That looks like it was filmed in my neighborhood, though the road was
better so it couldn't have been in SC! Some comment said it was at
Amelia Island, so maybe they did something down around there.

and SWMBO's '96 Infiniti I30. When my '87 wagon needs pads, Akebono it
shall be. Same or better braking performance, almost no brake dust.

The only downside was they did not have the holes in the pads for the brake
wear sensor (or break were censor).

That's not bad, compared to my first MB, a '70 220D with holes rusted

Beware the heater blower fan, the car was assembled around it, though it
can be replaced through the center speaker hole, if you don't mind
enlarging it a bit in half the time of the factory manual procedure - 10
hours vs. 20.

Re: [MBZ] Battery Maintainers

2015-05-13 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
My '74 911 got a new Optima battery in Mar 99 shortly after I bought
it. From day 1 I kept a Battery Tender like this one

that I bought on ebay for around $40 delivered (the one above is
$25). That battery lasted 13 years 7 i could have used it longer but I
feared getting left somewhere if the battery died and kept me from
getting home. Before this, I had never seen a 12V Batttery last more
than 6 years so I was very impressed by the performance!

BTW, the Battery Tender brand is very robust and well made.

YMMV -

I was using a small one I got from my father's estate to keep the battery

the battery was dead. I don't know if he ever resurrected it.

I got a flyer from NAPA and they have a number of larger, more expensive
chargers/maintainers, which, hopefully, might do a better job. But I want
to investigate before I plunk down my cash.

Boy, you _have_ been out of touch. *smiles*

This is a topic as volatile as an oil thread!

My summary - there isn't. Rusty is gone (took a job with
WorldPac). And to quote Curly - before he was Curly - we
are on our own.

The industry is shifting to far east manufacturing - even for
the formerly good brands. Then there is the low-price junk
like URO that claim to be a replacement but match only if you
are wearing dark sunglasses, stand at least 20ft away, at
midnight on a moonless night.

Autohause, RockAuto, FLAPS with a WorldPac account are all
places you can get a part - but figuring out what _is_ a good
part is now up to each of us. Like Curly said.

Some seem to think Gary Hurst is suitable supplier. I
don't. I choose NOT to take my business to someone who
behaves as he does.

Good Luck - you'll need it.

The charging cord on the Nook is a mini USB, but it's longer than the

B. It really is a Pierburg pump. Another time they almost burned me I was

[MBZ] Whiskey Tango 300D

2015-05-13 Thread clay via Mercedes
The adventure continues

I got the guts out of the car. Removed the w126 seating and drove it around
the block sitting on the spare tire. Engine runs, transmission still stalls
out the car in anything but L. Parking brake was non op, so I used the set
from Q for Gump, but could not get the dang lower springs to hook together.
Disks look ok. Found a set of Ronal 16 rims with michelin MXV tires for $40
off a 220 wagon (no idea of W designation).

This morning I was trying to drive the car to the shop so they could do the
springs and deal with the out of whack transmission/stall issue. I got half
way there and the car stalled and then would not start. Lucky for me, I was
going downhill and able to pull into a parking lot at a corner mart. Called
for a tow, but that was going to take over an hour, so had #1 boy pick me up.
Had breakfast and drove back to the car, when a paving crew pulls onto the lot.
The car is in the middle of the lot and they are trying to set up for work.
More luck, the tow showed up before they got too deep into work.

We will see what all repairs the car needs to hit the road.

Re: [MBZ] generator for Craig

2015-05-13 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
My setup for the house in town has a main disconnect switch for the grid
power, which ensures nothing from the generator feeds back to the grid
lines. That switch has two positions.. Generator power or Grid Power.. The
circuits for the house remain the same, the switch just selects the source.

It is then my duty to not use house devices which will exceed the power
supply of the generator. This system does not use any automatic generator
start or automatic switching.. so cost remained as low as possible..

Risk taken is power grid will go down when no one is home to switch on
generator, and select Generator Power . There is a safety interlock
between the two systems, so it is impossible to have both generator power
and grid power at the same time.

a copious supply of liquid fuel on hand for some other purpose. Then
 there
is the issue of interfacing a generator with the household wiring. I went
with a 15KV LP unit and one transfer switch that feeds one subpanel which
 feeds all the backed-up loads.
