[MBZ] Is the clutch job really over? Plus other jobs
I'm sure hoping so. Six months ago I bought and installed a new clutch master cylinder in a early '81 240D. The website didn't post the manufacturer - so I took a chance, and lost. It was a TRW with "Lucas" cast into the body - not a FTE or FAG. A couple months ago the car started losing brake fluid. It took awhile for it to get big enough for me to find it. The leak was the main seal on the clutch master cylinder. Fluid was leaking out and spilling over the top every time the pedal was pressed. *sigh* This is the TRW that is less than 6 months old, the one that didn't fit right. I had to grind about 3 mm off the end of the short rod to make it work. I order a FTE master cylinder from AutohauseAZ and a short rod. I was quite surprised to find the master cylinder had both a short and a long rod! No mention was made in the description. So I wasted $6 and have an extra short rod. Oh well. For what it's worth, it seem the short rods typically have a white plastic end and the long rods have a black plastic end. So how did it install? Perfect. Bolted in like it should, I was able to bleed it from the slave up (so the rod wasn't too long). And I had the assistance of a six-year-old who was able to lay down on the floorboard and reach up under the dash! So I'm hoping that the last time I have to mess with that master cylinder for at least a dozen years. Next was the starter motor. The one in the car was requiring a "tap" on the solenoid every time the car was cranked. I put in a used one - that often would just spin and not crank the engine. So I took apart 3 starters and picked the best parts from each and put together a whole one that's working fine. Some days it's worth that kind of effort to safe $150 dollars. The last item was the power steering return hose. It was rubbing against an air conditioner hose and nearly worn through. I found it odd the A/C hose shows almost no wear, while the PS hose was very worn. A new piece of Continental hose and that was fixed. I also drained and flush the fluid and put in a new filter. The old filter was one I haven't seen before. Three pieces, a steel bottom "plate" with ears to hold the element, a steel top plate, and the filter element NOT paper. It looks like it may be reusable. I cleaned it up and put it in the spare parts box and put a new Mann in the pump. Now I just need to get a MIG welder and repair some sheet metal... -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Lol, that 26 gallon tank with the filler six inches higher than the top doesn't give you much room for expansion! That is why, in fact, the instructions always say not to top off the tank. Not a problem for me, as I'm half a gallon away from home most of the time I fill up, and likely a gallon or more, but something to consider if you are going to park the car on a hot day immediately after filling it up. The ground temperature is usually in the 50's, so half a gallon more in the tank wouldn't be a surprise on a 26 gallon tank... Re: [MBZ] Pumping diesel
The way to get accurate milage calculations is to do them over several tanks. this will average out the differences in fill, although it won't help much with pump variations unless you always use the same pump -- I can to and from work, but on the road, no. Otherwise fill the same way at as close to the same rate as you can every time you fill up, whether it be stop when the foam shuts off the pump or until you cannot get more fuel in, doesn't matter. The only way to get really accurate milage numbers is to weigh the fuel, though. And don't forget that the only place in the supply chain the variation in volume with temperature is NOT calculated is at the dispensing pump -- as the summer tails off the fuel will be warmer than earlier by a few degrees and you will get less fuel (by weight) than in Spring when the ground is colder. I get the weird ones. I seemed to have the first Klima relay problem reported on the dickarde list, while Herr Doktor said Klimas don't fail, and many other oddball things I try to forget. Curt, and maybe a few others who have driven International Letter model tractors (or 300 series) can relate to this one. The last H we bought never idled right. It ran ok at 1/3 throttle or more, but died if you tried to let it idle. a few years ago I cleaned up the carb and soaked it in carb cleaner for a few weeks, and put in the new parts in a kit from the stealer. The kit didn't have all the parts so for the missing parts, I reused the old ones. No improvement, but the needle didn't leak. The last time I ran it a couple years ago it was flooding, so I thought the float sunk. Saturday I had the carb off and on several times and could not get it to run right. Yesterday I went at it again, and I noticed what I thought was an idle jet, so I took it out and cleaned it up and looked at it. brass tube with a hole up from the bottom, but not clear through, no holes in the side. Seems to me it should either have holes in the side, or the hole should go clear through. I found an online parts diagram that confirmed it was the idle jet. I tried to ream it out with a copper wire clipped off to a chisel point. If it was varnish/dirt buildup, the wire should have gone through. It appears that the center was never drilled. So it is like my MB factory "rebuilt" short block that was missing the hole for one head bolt. The tractor appears that it was used with a front mounted woodsaw for most or all of its life. So, maybe they ran it at half or 3/4 throttle all the time and it never bothered. The carb was painted gray originally, so when i put the kit in, I painted it gray again. Some collector online said the factory carbs were painted red along with everything else, but the wheel rims. So maybe this was a factory parts carb. Called a farmer tractor collector to ask him if it was supposed to have the hole clear through, and he didn't know. Yesterday I found online a guy in Minnysoda who rebuilds tractor carbs, so I called him today and he confirmed the hole is supposed to go clear through. I ordered parts from him to fix the carb, so we'll see if it will idle. This Saturday is a small tractor show, so I will take it over if I have it running by then. It got new plugs, so when the parts get in it will get new points, condensor, rotor, and spark plug wires in addition to the carb parts. That oughta turn it into a happy camper. I am registered to take it on a tractor ride this summer, so i need it running good for that. Meanwhile yesterday when I was messing with it i forgot to turn the key off when I took the carb off the last time. My 12 volt battery burned up the 6v coil. I had brought along my Bosch 12 V coil salvaged from a MB gasser (MB content) so I put it on. I guess I am committed now to converting the tractor to 12V. I've been ambivalent between keeping it original and converting it to 12v for practicality. So after many decades of putting MB parts on frods, now I finally have a tractor with MB parts! That makes it truly mine! I wish an MB Bosch alternator would fit under the hood. I think I am stuck with a toada or other rice burner alternator to get one that will fit under the hood, unless y'all know of some newish MB alternator that has a small OD. Oh, and the last time I took it on a three day tractor ride a few years go, it had one of my MB group 49 batteries strapped on, so it has had some MB content before! A group 49 MB battery will run it all day with no generator, and still have juice left. 1948 IHC Farmall Model H ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

About 295,000,000 of the 315,000,000 Citizens of America "have it and won't lose it". America is strong because it's individuals are empowered. We have repelled all efforts to force the country to submit, at great cost of both blood and treasure, and will continue to because this individual empowerment is worth dying for. To try to get accurate mileage calculations, wait for the foam to go down and keep adding until you see liquid. You said it - no way to know the volume of the foam, which may even vary with temperature. Even when waiting for the foam to go down, there are several factors working against you, like the accuracy of the pump calibration, orientation of the filler neck relative to the tank if not parked on level ground, and the temperature of the fuel (warmer fuel is less dense). - Max Charleston SC On Wed, May 27, 2015 at 12:50 PM, Kaleb C. My brother's SDL has a 30 gallon tank, and will go nearly 900 miles on a full one. He filled up once on the way from home to Alexandria, VA. My 87 300D holds 20, and in good weather I can easily to 500 miles before stopping to re-fuel. The Golf will hold quite a bit more (at least 1.5 gal) if you let the foam subside, and that gets me around 600 before a fillup. Re: [MBZ] 109
There is no relationship between a W109 and the Gullwing other than they used a mechanical injection pump for fuel delivery, I don't think even the pump is the same. The Gullwing engine wasn't used all that much, it was very expensive to manufacture, and difficult to maintain (the injection nozzles were in the block, aimed at the spark plugs) and Benz added the fuel injection to more normal engines intended for road use, not a sliced down aircraft engine. Not that the original engine wasn't a marvel, it was just not a great production engine. No suspension parts, either, to the best of my knowledge. I believe, although I could easily be wrong, that the SL had a fully independent rear end (I will see my buddy Hans tomorrow, I can ask, he worked on them) rather than a swing axle. Front end on the SL I don't know about. The W109 had kingpins and a two control arms, but so did everything Benz made at that time, at least until the W115 replaced the kingpin with ball joints. Geometry was improved in 1962 to change the kingpin axis and reduce scrub while increasing caster, some minor changes in the W115 on those lines as well. Nothing exciting except in comparison to US road iron of the day, all of which drove like log wagons. The SL had a space frame, with body panels attached, and working on it was pure hell -- a good deal of the rear frame had to be removed to get to the rear axle. Every Benz designed after 1950 has a unibody. I don't see all that much Gullwing in the W108/9 -- it was an old design by 1968, dating from the 1950s. Nice cars, but I like the W126 MUCH more. [MBZ] OT fuel economy
Last weekend, my son and I went to the lake. We are in Winnipeg and we go to Sioux Narrows on Lake of the Woods about 45 minutes south of Kenora. It is roughly 175 miles each way and the first 80 miles is fairly flat 4 lane highway. After that we get more into Canadian Shield territory and the road winds up, down and around. On the 4 lane I ran about 115 kph on the way out and about 118 kph on the way back, so it likely would have done even better if I had kept my speed down closer to the posted limit which is 100 kph (about 62 mph) According to the computer in my truck, it managed an average of 11.2 liters pers 100 kilometers on that trip last weekend. That would include the time that we used it to move the boat to and from the launch ramp etc if my understanding of how it works it accurate. That works out to almost 25 miles per imperial gallon or almost 21 miles per US gallon. It is a 2013 F150 Supercrew with the 5.0 coyote engine. Based upon the above, I would say it is doing quite a bit better than my previous truck which was the 2002 F150 Supercrew with the 5.4 Triton 2 valve engine. Both are 4 wheel drive. The newer one has more transmission gears etc. It will be interesting to know the real world numbers for the 2015 aluminum body truck which supposedly weighs about 800 pounds less. Do realize that there are a lot of people out there who don't understand the air suspension and as a result kludge it up badly. My former W112 wouldn't stay up until I went through and adjusted all the valves per the factory procedure. After doing so, it would stay up for three weeks at a time without being run. Re: [MBZ] 109
Air bags can be had for about $300 each per corner. Valves are more. But you don't necessarily need them to be rebuilt to have a driveable car. I'm rebuilding my second air suspension car right now, a W112 coupe. They're really not so bad, it's a simple system. But parts are expensive, they add up. The 300SEL was available with M189, M130, M116, M117, and M100. Lots of different engines over the years, but the 6.3 M100 is the most famous. It's on jackstands - probably to hide the collapsed air bags in the suspension. IIRC that's around $1000 per corner to fix. But that would be a stunner when repaired and painted! I'm thinking Astral Silver would do it justice. Wonder what condition the engine is in. That could be a real money pit. Even the parts costs would be significant IMO. It doesn't say but I believe many (all?) 300SELs were supplied with the mighty 6.3L? I'm a sucker for those old cars - love the 108, 109, 111's.
