Actually that is the site that my son is looking at.
We just get most stuff shipped to Pembina ND and then go get it and
bring it accross ourselves. The border is only about an hour south of us.

It is a Browning and I am sorry I do not recall the calibre.

[MBZ] OT: Understanding ISIS

2015-11-16 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
'net Friends:

A liberal friend of mine posted this Atlantic article:

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/03/what-isis-really-wants/3
84980/?utm_source=SFTwitter#article-comments

I was very surprised that this article agrees pretty much with everything I
have learned about fundamental islam over the years. It's quite long but
full of the kind of information that would be helpful for our leaders to
have. His descriptive and analytical discussion of ISIS and its basis in
Islamic doctrine is outstanding. His prescription for the best (or least
poor of the poor) solutions is highly speculative. And his assertion that
ISIS intends to only attack its near enemies and not the far ones has
obviously been belied by recent events. Some salient quotes:

<< We can gather that their state rejects peace as a matter of principle;
that it hungers for genocide; that its religious views make it
constitutionally incapable of certain types of change, even if that change
might ensure its survival; and that it considers itself a harbinger of-and
headline player in-the imminent end of the world.>>

<<... much of what the group does looks nonsensical except in light of a
sincere, carefully considered commitment to returning civilization to a
seventh-century legal environment, and ultimately to bringing about the
apocalypse.>>

<<... pretending that it isn't actually a religious, millenarian group, with
theology that must be understood to be combatted, has already led the United
States to underestimate it and back foolish schemes to counter it.>>

Some of this will be improved by taking down some small trees to the east of

Police pull over self-driving car in Calif.Published: Friday, November 13,
2015

Police in Mountain View, Calif. -- where Internet giant Google Inc. is
based -- pulled over a slow-moving vehicle yesterday and were surprised to
find it was one of the company's self-driving cars.

In a Facebook post, the Mountain View Police Department said an officer
began a routine traffic stop on the vehicle, which was delaying eastbound
traffic on busy El Camino Real.

The vehicle was traveling 24 mph in a 35 mph zone. After the car was pulled
over, an officer realized it was a self-driving car and contacted its
operators, the department said.

The department said the officer asked Google why the car was going so slow
and let them know it was impeding traffic.

Under California law, though, the self-driving vehicle was allowed to
operate on the road because it did not have a speed limit above 35 mph

Since we had the talk some time ago about Andrew possibly installing some solar

reminder Dad installed 1x 100w solar panel, charge controller, 2x 35ah 12v
batteries and an 800w inverter.
The system powers the range hood which sports a 9w CF bulb and a fan which
together pull around 80w running on high and a ceiling fan which pulls about
40w on its one setting. This is measured at the output of the inverter with a
kill-a-watt meter. When its on the inverter itself draws .5a at 12v or about 6w
measured with a multimeter. The inverter also has 2 USB outputs, each draws
.25a at 12v for another 6w when in use. The inverter draws a constant .01a when
idling with the USB ports hot but not in use.

Most recently we had 4 guys for 9 days. Thats 4 cell phones and 4 tablets plus
the wifi hot spot. Something was on the USB ports all the time, in fact I
charged my tablet and phone in my truck because I couldn't get any time inside
for it. So I figure we were using 6w 24 hours a day for 144w. The range hood
light/fan combo ran every morning for about half an hour and the light ran
every evening for about 2 hours, we didn't use the ceiling fan. That'd be 40w
in the morning and 18 in the afternoon giving us a grand total of 202wh or
around 16ah at 12v.
The 100w panel is angled for best capture in mid August at which time it should
make (reliably) 400wh a day. Sadly this time of the year I'd be satisfied if we
were making 1/4 that. We don't have good input monitoring (yet) so lets say
100wh which is possibly generous. Certainly we did start making power about the
time the sun came up with the panel showing constant 12v about half an hour
later and it continued at that rate until the sun was well over the horizon. So
we were using about twice our production. Actually thats true for the sunny
days, I suspect on the cloudy and rainy days we were probably making more like
50wh...
Some of this will be improved by taking down some small trees to the east of
the camp that shade the panel early in the day. There are other much larger
trees which could be removed for more improvement but won't for ascetic reasons.

Anyway the system behaved as expected, with an 8ah a day deficit voltage sagged

extremely concerned about that. These neighborhoods are
apparently "no-go"

Yeah, I am following the instructions at:
http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html

1. Open Disk Utility and select the Flash Drive
	2.	Select the Erase tab on the right and then set Format
to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Name the partition you'll be creating
Snow Leopard or OS X Install so you can keep track of your
installation device. After you've done this, click the Erase button.

Step 2 won't complete. When I "click on the "erase" button, it said
the source has not been verified, but offers no way to verify. When
I go to the "first aid" tab of the disk utility, find the file, and
click verify, it verifies, but then the "restore" tab does the same
thing on the nest try to "restore."

I tried copy paste to put the files on the USB stick but that does
not show up as bootable.

Still frustrating!

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: [MBZ] A Mac question

2015-11-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Format the USB drive first. Put it in, run Disk Utility, and create a single
partition on it that is Mac OS Extended. Screw the erase stuff, that’s silly.

As you know, creating a new partition on it will blow anything that’s on it
away, so erasing is moot. If you just bought the USB drive, I’ll bet you $10
it’s formatted in FAT or NTFS. Once you’ve created a new partition in a Mac
format it should be just fine.

Then do your restore to the USB using the disk image.

In Disk Utility, you’ll see both the physical disk, then the volume that’s on
it below. You won’t see the Partition tab unless you’re highlighting the

Yeah, I finally figgered out it was not showing me the USB Stick, but
the partition on it. Once I found out how to see the stick, then the

Right now it is loading the OS on the stick FINALLY!

Then do your restore to the USB using the disk image.

however.

did NOT come on briefly/intermittently while i was twisting the knob back

Re: [MBZ] OT - note from Paris

2015-11-16 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I guess you don't listen to NPR then... that has been their mindset for
14 years 2 months and 4 days. The guy this morning just couldn't
understand why the French and Belgians and whoever were not concerned
about the sensibilities in the "working-class" neighborhoods, which I
think are not particularly related much to "working" given the amount of
free sh..tuff they get.

NPR were hand-wringing this morning that the arrests in "working-class"
neighborhoods might offend the sensitivities of the residents. The guy was
extremely concerned about that. These neighborhoods are apparently "no-go"
zones for people who are not the same kind of "working-class."
The "working" that is going on appears to be stashing lots of weapons and
bomb-vest materials by certain members of the "working class" there.

I listened to NPR this morning and didn't hear that part. The govt. is
aggressively rounding up suspects and weapons caches, and bombing ISIS
camps in Syria. What's wrong with that?

High today 57. Locals have on the goose down jacket.

My cousin lives in Montrose CO and loves it there. The couple times I've
been through Grand Junction, CO, it seems nice. CO is invested by the
fruits and nuts from CA, as is Seattle. Seattle used to be nice before
the invasions of fruits and nuts and their nutso ways.

Passing through, i liked Billings, MT NO problem there with packin. WY
has been invaded by fruits and nuts too, especially around the hole.

From a couple hours, I liked Gallup NM. If you like the feel of a western
 town, Gallup is IT!

Nuthin grows in Phoenix, but then out where you are now, not much grows,
so mebbe you'll like the traffic and smog where nuttin grows.

<<... crazies come from all over and you can't prevent crazies from doing crazy

But:

Most of the "refugees" are not refugees at all but are taking advantage of the
flow to conceal some other motivation.

Adherents of the caliphate are a special kind of crazy, part of a culture of
which "crazy" is an integral part. They should not be equated to domestic
crazies like the Batman movie shooter. They are capable of planning, funding,
and arming coordinated attacks, and doing so with adequate opsec.

We can prevent many of them from doing their crazy things here.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks, so it matters little whether
or not the attackers were actually Syrian citizens. They have also revealed
that they intend to imbed with the "refugees".

While we may have an obligation to relieve the suffering of refugees, our
government has a greater obligation to protect the homeland and our own
citizens.

NPR were hand-wringing this morning that the arrests in "working-class"
neighborhoods might offend the sensitivities of the residents. The guy was
extremely concerned about that. These neighborhoods are apparently "no-go"
zones for people who are not the same kind of "working-class." The "working"
that is going on appears to be stashing lots of weapons and bomb-vest materials
by certain members of the "working class" there.

You never watched the early iteration of CNN International, which I used to see
in overseas hotels on a regular basis. They would rotate the stories every 30
minutes, so that if you watched more than an hour you saw the same stuff, over
and over again, with minor embellishments.

I once watched it for a whole day when I was stuck in a Sofitel at DeGaulle.
Only English speaking channel they had. I was so bored I wanted to rip my eyes
out.

I did enjoy seeing Tom and Jerry in French, though.

Grand Junction? Are you nuts? He doesn’t want a nine month ski vacation.
Tell him what the temperatures were two-three months ago in your neighborhood.

Portland is nice, but lots of clouds and the granola folks. Eastern Oregon is
pretty sparse but nice, as is eastern Washington state.

Understand that you’re talking about some pretty serious travel if you’re
covering an area like that.

As for cost of living, if you’re remotely close to a metropolitan area in
Washington, Oregon, Colorado, or California, your cost of living is going to be
significantly higher. I’ll bet the job compensation doesn’t reflect that?

Eastern or southern Colorado would be nice and probably just as affordable as
where you are now. However, it’s pretty damned rural, but I’m not sure how
that compares to where you are now. Mao and Craig have lived in those parts,
but I don’t think it’s recent for either one, so their information might be a
bit dated.

How’s about Albuquerque, NM? Good location, probably a decent cost of living.

If you’re going to be covering an area of that size you would just about have
to live near a major airport I would expect.

Boise is nice if you don’t mind winter. It’s surprisingly mild, much like
Denver can be, due to the location. I would absolutely go to Boise if I had to
move north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

You’ll have to put up with a lot of Mormons, though. It’s sort of a second

Snag an external DVD drive and go USB or Firewire. You can also use another

I am currently a manager. This job would be managing our market manager. Right
now I manage my employees and run my market. This job would be managing the
entire region. I agree not sure I would be happy getting rid of all my crap. It
would be a big change and don't think this risk and hassle would outweigh the
reward. Now if the spot opened up in our region it would be a no brainier as I
would not have to relocate.

Re: [MBZ] OT - note from Paris

2015-11-16 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
That's what I'd like to know. During 9/11, Italian news (and probably others)
were way ahead of American news, with more detail. SWMBO called relatives
there and started relaying details to me, at work, while I was watching CNN.
I was getting angry about how much more info was available to that audience.
Maybe European news agencies simply had more experience reporting on terror,
and were wide awake?

Re: [MBZ] Phoenix / Relocation

2015-11-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
No matter how good the deal, you always lose in a relocation. I don’t say that
to be negative or discourage anyone from doing so; rather, to make them
understand that the costs related to moving and setting up household in a new
location will always cost you more than the basic expense f relocation itself.

If you plan well and do some good record keeping, the tax benefits can offset
some of that expense, but not all.

What the motivation is is what really counts here. For example, I have
relocated four times. Each time the reasons were different.

1.) Indianapolis to Wisconsin (Kohler). Bare minimum expenses were covered,
the better part was out of pocket. Our motivation was career-oriented, so we
knew that if we made the move in the long term it would pay off. It did. We
both built our careers and incomes substantially by making this move.

2.) Wisconsin to Florida. All expenses covered, professional movers/packers,
etc. Nicest, easiest move I ever made. Motivation was to slow down career,
spend more time with family, stop traveling. Achieved all of that and more.

3.) Florida back to Indianapolis. Major expenses covered, but we had to do all
the work. Brutal, time consuming, took over our lives for several weeks.
Motivation was career oriented for both of us. Economy tanked two months after
we arrived, as did everything else. Ouch.

4.) Indianapolis back to Florida. Completely out of pocket, finally putting
much of that debt to rest these days, thank goodness. Done in stages so it
wasn’t a major hassle, but still damned unpleasant and costly. Motivation?
Get the hell out of the North and back to Florida. Mission accomplished.

I guess my point is that there are a lot of reasons why you might relocate, but
don’t do it on a whim or because the position pays more. Salary increases make
little difference on your living style, and are often incremental in reality if
you’re moving to a more expensive location. A change of scenery or a true
desire to live in another part of the country is a good reason, but again,
you’re not doing this for personal gain - because you won’t. And if this is
your reason, for gosh sakes, please, please do your due diligence and carefully
scout out the location and environs. Spend a lot of time researching things,
and spend as much time as you possibly can in the area and talking to people
who actually live there to understand what it’s like. I say this because you
can’t imagine how many people who visit Florida will say that they want to move
here after a week at Disney World.

Day to day life here has nothing to do with Disney World, or any of the
“attractions” for that matter. Or going to the beach. People who envision
some sort of Utopian lifestyle because we live near the ocean or the Mouse are
experiencing an altered reality that just doesn’t exist. My days here are
little different from what they were anywhere else I've lived. I have to go to
work, take care of family and household matter, deal with the daily issues of
life we all do no matter where we live. it has nothing to do with the beach or
going to Busch Gardens, nor is that an option.

The grass is always greener, but in reality, it rarely is. Stay put, enjoy
your stuff and family, and when the next notch up the ladder presents itself in
your neighborhood, go for it.

I can assure you that in relocations like this, no matter how good they sound,
how much of the costs the company covers, or how much more money you make, you
ALWAYS lose. Sometimes more than others, but you always come out a little less
when the dust settles.

Take it from someone who has done it more than once.

2015-11-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Oooh! I forgot about Reno, my very favorite Western city, and my jumping off
spot for visits to Yosemite.

Virginia City is really cool, too, but it’s not someplace you would want to
live, I think. Maybe Bridgeport CA.

Re: [MBZ] OT - note from Paris

2015-11-16 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Speaking of differences in news presentations, over ten years ago we had a
local radio station that broadcast CNN HLN audio, Robin Meade was big then, and
I would listen from about 6:30 a.m. until 7 while driving to work. Once at
work, we'd have a short meeting right after 7, and then I'd have some dead time
until 8; flip on the cable tv in the conference room and watch Robin present
the same stories from the previous hour. The slant of the stories would
change, from one end of the political spectrum to the other. Same stories,
just different emphasis / details / opinions.

I'm sure other news stations do the same, they know which demographic watches
when, so they try to tell the audience what it wants to hear.

Re: [MBZ] Phoenix

2015-11-16 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
You know that is exactly why I posted this here because I was sure others in
this list have relocated for work before. The VP of our company got fired a
while back and my boss was one that applied for it. Turns out the west coast
regional got moved up. If my boss would have got it then I would have been
going after his job. I will put it this way, last year a rep job with carfax
was open which never happens. I interviewed for it but they ended up going with
a friend of mine who was an internal candidate. I would have moved from my
management job to a much less stressful rep job at carfax for much larger base
but lower bonus portion. It thing that move would have netted about 10k more
per year. So just from talking to my boss the base for a regional manager job
with our company would come in a little less than the rep job at carfax. Not
sure what the bonus is but that is where I'm getting the idea it's not worth it
to relocate.

I have been to California a few times, Denver 1 time, but other than that have
not visited the west much other than Craig in NM. I would like to see Reno and
Vegas sometime. Yosemite as well.

Portland is nice, but lots of clouds and the granola folks. Eastern
Oregon is pretty sparse but nice, as is eastern Washington state.

Understand that you’re talking about some pretty serious travel if you’re
 covering an area like that.

As for cost of living, if you’re remotely close to a metropolitan area in
Washington, Oregon, Colorado, or California, your cost of living is going
to be significantly higher. I’ll bet the job compensation doesn’t reflect
 that?

Eastern or southern Colorado would be nice and probably just as affordable
as where you are now. However, it’s pretty damned rural, but I’m not sure
how that compares to where you are now. Mao and Craig have lived in those
parts, but I don’t think it’s recent for either one, so their information
 might be a bit dated.

How’s about Albuquerque, NM? Good location, probably a decent cost of
 living.

If you’re going to be covering an area of that size you would just about
have to live near a major airport I would expect.

The scary part was the enjoyment the author had in London with those
guys. As I read that, I almost found myself thinking the same thing.
Here, we know Late Great Planet Earth and apocalypse and 2nd coming -
all stuff of Hollywood in our mega-churches. Support Israel, etc - it
is scarily similar to the sense of caliphate expressed in the article.
Except here, we don't speak about things spoken at the caliphate such
as beheadings and crucifixion. I dunno, mebbe I be radical.

I think if we took a look at ourselves there might be a whole bunch of
reasons to hate.
We may have sowed all of our fears. It might be real informative to
hear foreign point of view regarding many things - we might learn
something.
I just hate the rush to judgement. Sure, ISIS did it, but who are
they? I dunno, war these days sounds so caliphate, so apocalyptic,
and it might get there.
Keep your powder dry.

2015-11-16 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
That's what I'd like to know. During 9/11, Italian news (and
probably others) were way ahead of American news, with more detail.
SWMBO called relatives there and started relaying details to me, at
work, while I was watching CNN. I was getting angry about how much
more info was available to that audience. Maybe European news
agencies simply had more experience reporting on terror, and were
wide awake?

All the tv networks are just mouthpieces for the ministry of
propaganda. Fox, maybe less so, but just about every news broadcast
I hear a "liberal" bias.

You never watched the early iteration of CNN International, which I
used to see in overseas hotels on a regular basis. They would
rotate the stories every 30 minutes, so that if you watched more
than an hour you saw the same stuff, over and over again, with minor
embellishments.

I once watched it for a whole day when I was stuck in a Sofitel at
DeGaulle. Only English speaking channel they had. I was so bored I
wanted to rip my eyes out.

I did enjoy seeing Tom and Jerry in French, though.

I was like 30 minutes late to a meeting in Peru because I was totally entranced
watching Warner Brothers cartoons in Spanish in my hotel room.

I can only recall worrying about gunshots in Guatemala and Angola. Neither was
