Install the VirtualBox package, deal with the dependencies,
and launch the GUI. Then get out a MSWin installer disk,
create a new guest machine, and proceed to install MSWin onto
it. *smiles*

Max wrote:

Uh, I may be wrong, but the Oracle Virtual Box that I

Correct. You get VirtualBox for your host OS - (MS, *nix,
Mac). Then VirtualBox can create a "guest" - which _acts_
like a bare metal computer. It uses a hostOS file as it's
harddrive and you can then install any OS you want on the
guest.

I have never run on a MS host, but I have many Linux hosts
setup.
The general scheme is a host can have one or more guests
running on it. The OS on each guest thinks its running a
bare metal machine - but it's not. Each guest connects to
the outside world through the host, and can be "operated"
either from the host.

The harddrive file can be "dynamically allocated" which makes
a sparse file on the host, meaning the guest can be told it
has a 20G harddrive, but the host "harddrive" file is only as
big as what is used - up to the full 20G. Over time, it will
grow, and there are tools to allow reducing the size.

VirtualBox like to have RAM, but I run WinXP guest on a
Debian host with 2G RAM, so it doesn't have to be huge
amounts to work.

The guest NIC can be bridged or NAT.
Oh, I do recommend "guest additions" - which is software for
the _guest_ to make it easier/smoother to manage it from the
host.

I abandoned dual boot a decade or so ago and all my MSWin
dependencies are managed in various guests. USB now works
well, network has worked well for a long time, serial is
solid - but any tight connections to external hardware stuff
is the most likely place for there to be a problem.
When I had dual boot, I had to install enough software in
MSWin that I could function - browser, PDF reader, file
manager, etc. With it as a guest OS, all that is handled by
the host. Copy/paste even works between the host and the
guest.

In my MSWin guests, I can run the latest version of Acrobat
Reader (no longer available for Linux, but required for
fill-in tax forms), CAD program, etc.

One guest is only for my ancient Garmin. It was a install
all the bits to make it work - now it's "portable" in that I
can "Export an Appliance" which is VirtualBox speak for
making a portable copy that I can then open on any host.
Same sort of thing for iTunes - but that one didn't relocate
very well.
I have a Linux guest with the harddrive set to
"immutable" (it reverts every time it reboots) so the kids
who can't read can use the computer and if they mess
something it "fixes itself" *smiles*.

a couple of days I really do not have enough ice to fill up my jug.
So this leads me to start looking at these new french door
refrigerators with the slide out freezer in the bottom. I am most
interested in one that has dual ice makers, they have one in the door
and one in the bottom freezer. We do not use bulk ice that often but
when we need it, it would be great to have it. In my little bit of
research I am tending to lean toward Samsung or LG. The
Whirlpool/Maytag/GE seems like they are way more expensive than what
you can get from LG/Samsung. Anybody have any refrigerator
experience they would like to share? Online reviews seem to be no
help really. Any website I find seems to be an advertisement for 1
brand or the other. Also, Lowes seems to be having a massive sale
that lasts a few more days.

Re: [MBZ] OT refrigerators

2016-07-09 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Son replaced all kitchen appliances with LG over a year ago at big saving. So
far no problems, and his wife likes the ultra quiet dishwasher very much.
He entertains business associates and neighbors frequently, but seldom big
groups. He has two previous fridges in the garage; one full of beer for him and
his former college team mates who come by fairly often, and the other which has
an ice maker and holds other stuff.

I have a ten plus year old Amana with a bottom drawer freezer/ice maker which
has never given a bit of trouble besides the ice maker freezing up when I
rarelly used it for a couple of years. A full defrost thawed it out and it's
been fine ever since.
When the time comes that it does need a new compressor or whatever, I'll get it
fixed because I probably wouldn't be as satisfied with any other.

If your fridge is working Ok you can buy a counter top ice maker. Sam's
has them, a friend bought on of the 10# models.
Works great but the storage bin is on the small side. Or do like my
uncle and the last base I worked at and go to a restaurant
supply house and see if they have a used commercial ice maker for sale.
One of our mechs found one at a restaurant that
was going out of business. We all chipped in and bought it for 150
bucks. Was nice to be able to fill up an ice chest to keep
the fish I caught cold on my 2 1/2 trip home with out going ans paying
Achmed an exorbitant price for a bag of ice.

Commercial ice makers sell for $1800 and up new.

If ice is the biggest issue, and you have a chest or upright freezer in
addition to a fridge, freeze milk jugs of water. When you need ice, take them
out of the freezer and smack them on the truck bumper or concrete, cut it open
and voila, you have crushed ice.

We had a 21 ft^3 Amana french door, bottom drawer freezer in Los Alamos
which we sold with the house.

We are currently using a smaller (19 ft^3, IIRC) Amana my parents bought
for us when I was in grad school in Texas in the mid- to late-1990s. It
has a bottom freezer and both the refrigerator section and freezer
section have single doors.

We got used to the arrangement of the larger Amana, but when we
transitioned back to the smaller, I was amazed how much the door on
the smaller refrigerator holds.

We stay away from side-by-side refrigerators like the plague because
of their waste of space and unusable space.

Likewise, though not as badly, the french doors waste space because they
have to have two extra door seals in the middle of the two refrigerator
doors.

Longer runs are better for the compressor than frequent cycles. My parents finally retired their 1959 Coldspot freezer this year. It was still running fine, and had rarely shut off (only for power failures, defrostings, etc) since my brother broke the knob off in 1965 when mom had it set full cold for moving to a new house. I don't know about yours, but my newer fridge doesn't run much once it's cold. Maybe 15-20 minutes, once an hour or so. But it takes a day or two to go from room temp to fully cold. Mitch.

I bought a big (the biggest) Samsung top-french-door, bottom drawer
fridge about 1.5 yr ago, I think it is like 33cuft. The bottom ice
maker quit working about 9 months ago, guy came and determined the fill
tube had cracked and frozen up, replaced that and it started making ice
again. This was just some little plastic tube about a foot long. But
it goes on strike every few days and I have to hit the reset button on
the ice maker to get it to cycle and start making ice again. The
adverts say it can make up to 10lb ice a day, that is more like 10lb/wk
if it keeps working. The top maker that feeds the door seems to work
OK, I think I only had to recycle it once when it ran out of ice in the
drawer. The bottom ice maker is now starting to get wonky again, I
might call them soon and have them come and replace it.

The top ice maker holds maybe 5lb of ice, the bottom is just a big tray
under the maker that the ice dumps in then slides out when you pull out
the drawer.

The fridge part is kinda nice except to get the bottom meat drawer open
(it is as wide as the interior) you have to open both doors. There are
2 1/2 drawers for vegs, you can open them either side with just that
door open.

The guy who came said they have a lot of problems with the Samsungs and
LGs and whatnot, none of them are very high quality these days and
probably won't last that long as they use small motors and compressors
to get the energy ratings but since they are running flat out they wear
out fast. Plus that fill tube issue was a common one, go figure a $3
part fails like that so easy.

I bought the extended warranty, 3 years I think, so I am covered another
1.5yr.

My SIL has a Bosch fridge though it is not that big and is a
side-by-side, but it is a nice unit.

I was going to put a dedicated ice maker in my new kitchen but my wife
had a fit about it for some reason I could not understand. Last weekend
we had a bunch of people here, and of course ran out of ice in about 2
hours. Sent the kids to get a coupla bags, my wife remarked we needed a
bigger ice maker... duh ya think? I think that is the way to go, put
one in your shed and have as much as you want.

I wondered what the deal was with these small 2nd drawer between the top
frig and the freezer. From what I am seeing the ones that have dual ice
makers do not have this drawer, the ones that have it only have the
bottom freezer. Does the 2nd drawer take away from upper frig space?

I think ours is around 24 cubic feet and we bought it as a floor model close
out for around $1700. It normally sold for around $2100.

As for the icemaker, it makes plenty of ice but with guests in the house or a
big demand it won't keep up. As this isn't a regular issue, we just grab a bag
of ice and put it in the big upright freezer we have in the garage.

I didn't think I would like the lower freezer drawer setup, but it works well
and stores a fair amount of stuff.

Mobil seems to be the worst around here with a $0.60 spread between regular and
premium. They actually change it at times to as much as $0.90. I have no idea
what the motivation or reason is behind the change.

In an article from the June, 2016 issue of "The Family Handyman", entitled "10
Things You Should Know About Gasoline", author /"expert" Fred Walas, fuels
technology manager for Marathon Petroleum Company, a 34 year veteran in the
refinery business, whose current job includes work with the EPA, other oil
companies, and automobile manufacturers developing new fuel standards, posits
question number four:" Is a major-brand gas better then a lesser known brand?"
(I do believe that is the longest sentence I have ever typed).

His answer is that 20 years ago, there was a difference between gas from the
majors and "cheap " gas from no-name stations. He claims that today the biggest
difference between gasoline brands is the type of fuel cleaning additives used.
He goes on to say that that the EPA mandates a minimal level of fuel system
cleaning additives and all gasoline sold in the U.S. must meet those levels.

Although he does not specifically answer the posited question, the implication
is that there is no substantial difference between the majors and off brands.

For those who may not know: Shehad.. to die while killing the enemies of
islam is the only sure path to jenna [paradise described in islamic books.]

Shooting skills are easily learned with minimum practice.. What is not
easily learned is the willful act of drawing a sight picture on another
human and then killing that person, then repeating that act 12 times. That
particular "talent" set is NOT something learned at your local shooting
range. That requires the person to violate all taboos against such acts.
Thus, my belief the shooters were wound up tight by someone [s] before they
arrived to kill.

To paraphrase an old southern saying "I smell an Imam in the woodpile".

[MBZ] Dallas Shooting

2016-07-09 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

A man accused of shooting indiscriminately at passing cars and police on a
Tennessee highway told investigators he was angry about police violence against
African Americans, authorities said Friday.

Dallas shooter obviously had a well-planned strategy, and his tactics were
surprisingly good, especially in the way he dealt with a cop taking cover
behind a concrete pillar. It showed how inadequate our police still are in
dealing with somebody who really wants to kill them. I have no problem
admitting that he could have taken me out with ease. SWAT managed to pin him
down, but not before he shot a dozen cops, and they finally had to resort to
the equivalent of a robot delivered grenade to blow him into the afterlife.
Hard to believe he was a reservist/carpenter in the military, I saw the video
and assumed he was a veteran fighter from the sandbox.

The bozo in Tennessee was just an idiot with a gun shooting at anything that
moved. Our police are more than capable of dealing with idiots who don't know
what they're doing.

Mitch.

U.S. officials confirmed that Mr. Johnson was in the U.S. Army Reserve from
March 2009 to April 2015, when he left active duty and was honorably separated
from the reserve. He served in Afghanistan from November 2013 through July 2014.

Mr. Johnson held the rank of private first class, officials said. He was a
carpentry and masonry specialist who served with an Army Reserve company in
Seagoville, Texas, which was part of the 420th Engineer Brigade based in the
Texas city of Bryan.

Concrete and masonry specialists undergo 10 weeks of basic combat training,
where they are trained to use machine guns, among other weapons, according to
Army recruiting materialssnip

No Andrew.

BATFE, Bureau of Alcohol Tobbacco Firearms & Explosives controls
manufacture and sale of such items as explosive grenades and full automatic
weapons.

If you owned one as a civilian and were properly licensed by BATFE to own
the device, with all the explosive devices to make it work, you would make
application now,,, and perhaps get the license in 5 years, or that hell has
frozen solid, after having proved you were a responsible citizen, with a
Yuue bank account.

BATFE.. should be a convenience store instead of a government agency..
