A steam clean will really make it look like new and expose just where there may
be seeping leaks.

I am going to spiff up the aluminum bits as I have to remove them. Putting a
polish on the M117 valve covers was interesting, but the OM603 will not need
the mirror finish, just a bit of spit shine.

[MBZ] Silk purse casting pearls before swine ears

2016-09-11 Thread clay via Mercedes
I have been learning much about how to paint a car with rattle cans. If not
for mistakes, it would be on the road and snazzy, but …..

Past week has been speny with glaze, heavy primer, light sandable primer, rust
reformer, 2 in 1 white, el cheapo white, and more. So far I am one coat in on
the roof, final coat on the hood and trunk, one coat on the door tops, screwed
up the door bottoms and had to scrape and redo primer, front fenders have had
primer sanded off because the pox did not fix with heavy sandable primer or
glaze and now is down to original primer or metal.

Rust fix is not proper or complete. Had to remove cladding to get at some of
it, but only took it to bare metal and then Rust reformer and waiting for that
to flash so I can primer. Passenger fender by the headlight has actual clear
coat persisting and some minor rust that will require wire wheel and removal of
the bumper (which needs renovation) to make good. Back bumper is in need of
refurbish as well. The driver side rear quarter has a beer can size rusted out
bit that will want bumper removed to repair. I hope to find a PnP replacement
panel to take to a shop so they can weld it in and do the bondo bit.

There is new rubber on the road side, and I have had it up on ramps front and
rear so I can scrape and scrub the thick gunk and mire from metal parts. I
should be able to access the Diff for making fresh 90 weight to go in. That
will then want to get rust reformed and a fresh few coats of paint to deter
more rust happening. Front end will want a steam clean to really make the
baked on oil go away.

I just got my period correct plates, so can now get her registered as a
collector car. No more annual payment to keep her on the road. With plate on
and the trunk/hood given the 1500-4000 grit sanding, then buffing, I can take
her for an Italian tune up. Then it will be back on the ramps and wrapping all
the “finish” paint in plastic so I can complete the rest of the body.

Some yes, some no. The iPhone 4S had both radios in it, IIRC. But later
ones again do not. The two systems are totally incompatible, that is
true. But nothing technical stops you from putting both radios into a
device.

[MBZ] Oil pan weld

2016-09-11 Thread clay via Mercedes
The SDL, after a bunch of cleaning has a messed up oil pan. I think it is
aluminum, and the PO seems to have damaged it a bit such that it leaks through
the hole that got made. An epoxy patch has been applied that is now weeping.
A new pan is around $400, I could maybe scrounge a OM603 pan if I got lucky one
day, but I wondered if this could be repaired in a welding manner? I am not
going to attempt this myself, as I suck with the MIG.

Would replacing the pan require engine removal? I would prefer not doing
that, and if there is a way to not have weepy epoxy that would be best.

Ummm... MB stealer?

Otherwise, there are places that clean and coat tanks. or wash it out
with a pressure washer, dry, install, and carry a spare fuel filter.

We had a truck (Benzin) that was underwater in the flood of 1973. we
carried a spare fuel filter and changed it as needed. It never plugged

Have a friend who needs a new fuel tank for his 1989 E320.
He bought the car, it had been setting while the previous owner lived out
the last 5 years of his life. The fuel tank gathered moisture and stale
fuel [ethanol blend] so the tank is a rusty mess.. he has it out, now
looking for a source for a new fuel tank.

Anyone here have a source.. or a truly good used one with no rust
internally?

[MBZ] Supplier for new fuel tank, 89 E320

2016-09-11 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Have a friend who needs a new fuel tank for his 1989 E320.
He bought the car, it had been setting while the previous owner lived out
the last 5 years of his life. The fuel tank gathered moisture and stale
fuel [ethanol blend] so the tank is a rusty mess.. he has it out, now
looking for a source for a new fuel tank.

Anyone here have a source.. or a truly good used one with no rust
internally?

Engine compartment is 45 percent of concours judging score sheet. If you
want to win you need a clean engine.

2016-09-11 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I just lost my T-Mobile android phone today in downtown DC! Dropped it (I
guess) on the way to Foggy Bottom subway station. When I dial it the
number rings but no pickup. I retraced my steps twice to see if it was
lying around on the ground or in some bushes - no luck. I assume that
it's in someone else's hands but has not been dialed since its
disappearance. I am totally helpless without it. Sent several text
messages offering a reward for its return.

Can the cracked arm/mounting area be repaired to properly secure the
engine? I've been afraid that there might some damage to those areas.

it ran great, sounded great, good oel pressure, so the oel loss after
the crash when the cooler lines sheared didn't kill it.

We did some serious redneck engineering to get it out. Car is sitting
out back in the dirt driveway (I don't have any concrete except in the
garage. I dragged the car forward up close to where I could get my
trailer up near the engine after we pulled it. Hoist sitting on a sheet

of plywood. Jacked the engine up to clear the front crossmember, then
hooked a chain to the back of the car and dragged it out from under the

engine. Rolled the engine a bit then to get my trailer near it, we got

it on the trailer and ready to take to my friend's barn for storage for

 awhile.

I have a few pics, it was getting dark, I'll go take some more of the
broken bits. We got a bit more to strip off the car then off to the
knackers to get a few dinero on the metal.

Amen! Pass the ammunition!

Make the seller E&R spark plugs or OM606 or later glow plugs before
purchase. Then take the purchase home and remove the plugs and put on
the NeverSeeze. It is available at Motion Industries and others.

G Mann via Mercedes

It's been my practice for the past 30+ years to ALWAYS coat the threads of
spark plugs with "Never Seize". There are many versions made by the Never
Seize company, my preferred version is a nickle based product.. I'm sure
the more common copper based version works well, since I have also used
that.

Never had a plug fail to come out since I've started using it.. Started
using it because I did a lot of work on Aluminum head "furren" cars and
motorcycles... it works equally well with cast iron heads/ plugs.

Use it... you'll be glad you did at next tune up.

We did some serious redneck engineering to get it out. Car is sitting

garage. I dragged the car forward up close to where I could get my
trailer up near the engine after we pulled it. Hoist sitting on a sheet

hooked a chain to the back of the car and dragged it out from under the

engine. Rolled the engine a bit then to get my trailer near it, we got

it on the trailer and ready to take to my friend's barn for storage for

awhile.

I have a few pics, it was getting dark, I'll go take some more of the

knackers to get a few dinero on the metal.

[MBZ] My weekend house project

2016-09-11 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So we got the lesbians out of the rent house who ended up leaving on their own.
The problem is for some reason we have gotten no action on the house so it sits
empty. We have got a couple of people who were flakes. I guess there is not a
market for an upper end house around here. Either that or people want to move
before school starts, and that was all while trying to get the other people
out. Anyway we had some bad wood rot in a corner of the house in the breakfast
nook area and the floor was dropped down about 1/4 below the trim in one corner
of the room along a wall for about 4 feet. The stem wall and floor joists in
that area are rotted due to water damage from the house being left open for
about 2 years while it was in the process of being built. The builder was
foreclosed on and left without Windows or doors till the bank later finished
it. We then bought it not knowing this fact till later. This has lead to having
to repair rotted wood a few times over the years. I had a quote
form a guy to go in and replace all that wood etc but I do not want to do
that now so as a temp fix I hauled some cinder blocks and 4x4 under that and
jacked it back up stabilize it until it can be properly fixed. Since we can't
seem to get it rented it's going on the market next week. I am now sore and
wore out from belly crawling back and forth hauling blocks along the way.

Re: [MBZ] Fw: Speaking of Mercedes BFiFPXtG7I

2016-09-11 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Looks to me like the front body movement and the engine breaking free at the
left mount allowed the steering gear to collide with the starter and crack the
starter housing. Post-crash, there was at least a couple inches between the
starter and the steering gear, so I think the body flexed during the impact and
then sprang back. The anti-lock brake pump also moved inward enough to break
the power steering reservoir.

All four doors still open, only the right front passenger door rubs on the
front fender. Windshield is intact.

Looks the right arm is fine, the left one cracked apart where the bolt
goes through, which makes sense if the mount was being pushed right, it
just snapped the end off. They are aluminum too, which suggests the
benzgineers did a calculation on what would break at what force.

I took some more pics, I'll have to figure out how to post them.

Max and I pulled the engine/tranny from Wilton's smashed car
yesterday. He pulled the starter off his wagon and swapped it on to
Wilton's engine, turns out the hit cracked the housing with the gear
so that is why it wouldn't spin. Not clear what hit it but whatever
it was gave it a good whack. I unbolted the mounts, one of the arms
on the engine, on the side that took the hit, was snapped at the
mount point so that was inop. Once we got the engine out, the other
mount metal bit had sheared too where the bolt goes into it.

I presume all this was as the Benzgineers intended, the frame can
absorb a lot of energy without taking the engine with it and
depositing it in, say, your lap or face. Lot better if all that
stuff breaks than keeping the engine connected to the frame.

The engine farred right up and ran fine with some old oil in it, the
cooler lines looped back on themselves, and me squirting some water
in the top rad hose while the water drained out the bottom of the

I used some on the subbornly noisy door check in our 2010 Dodge RAM 1500, its
cured the issue. I had been using just regular grease which would quiet the
thing for a couple days but pretty quick we'd be back to "sqk" every time
you opened the door.
I seem to have lost that tube which is too bad I need to try it on the Golf
which doesn't make noise but has very stiff doors that grease has helped but
not as much as I'd like.

No in the car. Max took a vid of it. He put the instrument cluster
back in to see oel pressure. Cranked it about 3 seconds and it lit off,
ran a few seconds then died, probably fuel starvation. Started again,
it ran great, sounded great, good oel pressure, so the oel loss after
the crash when the cooler lines sheared didn't kill it.

2016-09-11 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

I always figured a thin coat of dieselfuel/oil preserved things in the
engine compartment. But I never had show cars. On the OM636, OM621,
OM615, OM616/7 and OM603/2/1 engines I don't think you'd hurt much. On
the OM606 on, with all the electronics, it is probably not advisable to
hose down the engine; certainly pressure washers on those engines.

This brings up an interesting question; is it wise to do a detail on a
M.B. Diesel engine?

If the “detailer” used silicone based products on or around the engine
compartment, they borked your MAF. If silicone gets on the sensing
parts of the MAF, it kills them. This is well known and documented.

Lift the hood and see if you’ve got a shiny engine.

So I bought that low miles 1994 e420 from Jeremy and Co up in SF.
Figured I

need the car and they said it drove well and was in good shape, and that's
about all I need in a 420. Paid and they sent the car.

It arrived yesterday. Started, backed off trailer fine. It was about
8am so

I hopped in it and attempted to drive to work. Unfortunately, it would rev
to about 1500rpm and stall, and repeat the sequence about every second or
so. It idles as smooth as silk, just won't throttle up. No lights on the
dash. Never got out of first gear or above 20mph. Not good news!
Called tow

truck, then Lyft.

Herbert the German mechanic says the fault code is either the throttle
body
actuator or the computer that controls it. He says the throttle body
is not
opening properly in response to pedal input. He asks if there has ever
been

water on the engine. I say not to my knowledge. He is still sorting out
what exactly is failing. Either one is a spendy item apparently; 1500 for
the actuator and lord knows if a computer would even be available. Herbert
himself isn't cheap either, but he knows mercedes.

So I got Jeremy on the phone and relayed this info. He apparently drove it
for several days and to the smog place before listing it, and it was
completely fine including the dyno test at smog. He says they did detail
the engine after that though.

So here is the question: what stuff typically gets messed up when you wash
an e420 motor that can cause this sort of thing? I am still hoping for an
outside chance of something simple, and I figured I would see if there is
any collective wisdom on this topic.

Thanks,
Karl

They probably can. I’ll buy a “SIM free” phone, however, meaning it’s not tied
to any carrier. If Apple wants to activate it for me, fine, if not, I’ll go to
the Verizon store that’s about a mile away. I already checked with them and
they’ll provide the SIM for free.

I've had Republic for 2 years. I just updated to a MotoX 3rd gen when my 1st
gen MotoX died. The new GSM phones like mine use a different carrier. They won't
tell you who but allude to it being AT&T. The service is a little better than
the Sprint but nothing to write home about. The phone irritates me some because
it'll say "no service" switch to airplane mode and back and you've got service
again. It'll be interesting to see if its got service at camp, the old phone
had none. Sprint service ends about halfway up Maine, AT&T claims to have
service there and Angie's old AT&T phone worked fine.
For the price (I pay about $30 on the new plan, Angie spends about $17 on an
old Refund plan) its fine, adequate but nothing outstanding. If it gets any
worse or more expensive I'll jump ship. I very nearly did when I couldn't
figure out how to change my Republic number to the new Republic phone and ended
up having to ship the new phone back and get a replacement. Worse the phone
somehow got damaged to the tune of $125. I don't know how its possible since it
never left the house and the new-new phone is still in perfect shape a month
later. I made them send a picture which does show damage but I'm pretty sure it
wasn't there when the phone left my possession.

I just started testing out Republic wireless (before I switch my number).  I
live in a rural area. Alltel was OK until after Verizon bought them out.
Now it's 0-1 bar at my home.
Republic uses WiFi as primary (when available) and switches to and cell
(Sprint network, I think) if no WiFi.  I have good WiFi and Internet at my
house (typically 30-50 MBPS).  As I recall, it's $20/mo (plus tax) including
1 G cell data (WiFi data doesn't count against monthly data).  There is no
limit on voice or text on any plan. More monthly data is more $$.
The catch is that I had to but an approved smart phone (I am still a flip
phone guy) and learn to use it.  I bought a Moto G4 from Amazon ($150 with
ads).  This phone seems compatible with (almost) all networks (with the
right SIM card) so it may be useful even if Republic doesn't pan out.  I
just started this process yesterday but so far it works great.  Learning how
to use all the phone features and settings will take some time.

That missed the Q...

The Star has an article that 123s are becoming the car of choice for
hollyweird and other popstar millennials. They apparently have
discovered the durability of the 123 cars. The story is accompanied
by a picture reported to be "lady gaga" in a light blue 123 with
Bundts. It says there is a new song about Mercedes that may replace
Janis Joplin's "little song of great social and political importance."
