I know a lady chemist who usta be a Dupont. Here son is a Dupont and
works fer the DoS. She worked fer the company. I've never asked if the

nice estate by the River, but probably not as sizable as your neighbor.

There is a guy here on this Island who is married to a DuPont, they
have quite an estate, almost rivaling my vast estate. He is a bit,
um, challenging to deal with though we get on reasonably well.
Reasonably well, given my tolerance for pomposity, arrogance, and
hubristic behavior. His opinion of himself is somewhat elevated
beyond that of anyone else who knows him. More than somewhat.

NPR is indeed droning on that HFCs will be banned Sorry folks, it
is more impt that the self righteous greenie-weenies feel good about

will lower the seas by 1/2 of one degree.ooops that is temps...
Well, it really does not matter as it is all made up to jerk sheeple

Hmmm people used to use ice to lower temps [greenie-weenie not to

Re: [MBZ] Hydrocarbon AC Refrigerant Report NOW JEAN F'N

2016-10-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Jean F'n is an interesting case. Liveshot as he is known, "Do you know
who I am?" He also apparently likes to hang with young ladies and act
like a Kennedy with them. Well known behavior. He is kept by Tuhrayza.

My wife's dad had the foresight about 50+ years ago to buy a plot of
land on Nantucket Island and build a small cottage on the property, on
the far end of the island from town so it was kind of the hinterlands
back then. Relatively cheap money back then as it really wasn't much of
a swell place. Both are still quite lovely, though now they are
approaching beachfront location due to the march of nature. Wife,
mother and siblings spent summers there while dad worked, to get there
occasionally. So my wife grew up a good part of her teenage years on
the island and knew it very well, having the usual sort of minimal
resort-type summer jobs that paid quite well. She taught Fred Rogers's
son to sail, he had a place not too far away. Fred was pretty much as
he was on his show. I walked by his house once, heard the phone ring,
and he answered it, and I was like, that's Mr. Rogers! There were lots
of other interesting characters there too.

A friend she worked with after college had a similar experience as her
grandmother owned 2 houses there, old inherited places or something, one
in town and one on the harbor just on the edge of town. They devolved
down to the grandkids and she was the only one who wanted to fool with
them. I think they sold the one in town to give the others their
inheritance, kept the hahbah house. The one on the harbor is 2 doors
down from Tuhrayza's (the late John Heinz's) place. Some years back
when we were visiting the island we would visit this friend who spent
the summers at the house with the kids, hang out on the porch and drink
and whatnot. There were always SS guys or some kind of feds around the
house, this when J F'n was a senatuh, maybe before Teddy got the final
round. Big flag on a pole out front. The kids liked to run up and down
the little bit of beach in front of the houses and of course they got
hassled by the hausengrupenkomandos. Nice, terroristic chirruns.

The yacht, which had been "berthed" in Rhode Island to avoid the
usurious MA taxes (good job Jean!) was anchored out in front of the
house, which, if anyone paid attention, would mean that MA taxes were
due on it. But being the liberal senatuh meant that taxes were only for
everyone else, not the swells. Apparently since he has become SoS the
security is even more annoying, the friend was thinking to unload the
place, which is probably at this point worth multiple $millions, because
it was becoming increasingly difficult to rent it out, even at the
bargain rate of $25k/wk, maybe more now, due to the wake turbulence of J
F'n and Tuhrayza being in proximity. I was there 4 or 5 years ago and
rode my bike over there, it was the same way. The street behind the
house, Hurlburt Ave, is sorta like an overgrown alley, but the cops were
still there making sure no one infringed on J F'n's territory even if he
or Tuhrayza weren't there. Thanks, taxpayers! They gave me the
stinkeye when I rode past, probably snapped my picture or something.

On another possibly interesting note, my doctor here is the grandson of
people who owned a house just down from there a little ways. If you
have ever read the book or seen the movie Cheaper by the Dozen, that was
about his grandparents and his father was one of The Dozen. The house
is pretty much the same as it was, with the bunkhouse out back and a
little lighthouse kind of effect on the main part of the house. He goes
there quite often, the house is still in the family. We have had some
interesting discussions about various goings-on there and of course he
knows the whole deal about J F'n and has a somewhat less than flattering
opinion of him too. His cousin, whom he says is pretty whacked, lives
near where my wife's family place is, and stays year-round which
explains the whackness.

J F'n on a pink girls bike in the parking lot at Jetties Beach, just
down the way from Tuhrayza's house in which he is occasionally kept. He
is truly a rather odious individual.

Abrasive cutting wheel cut right through no problem. Was very careful with
the depth and only have several small cuts into the steering lock housing
that will be hidden under the new protector sleeve. Tomorrow I will be
putting most everything back together, as I have order new sleeve and
tumbler set and they mount from the front and slide in place. I tried to use
the tumbler from my 190 until the new ones come in, but after install, it
would not turn to the off position to release the key.

I found out you can't drill out the lock or the protective sleeve. I

Re: [MBZ] OT Sears / Kenmore dryer repair

2016-10-15 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Today I did the deed, dryer is fixed! Left the dryer in top of the washer for
the repair. Rick's description was the best, big ball mounted on the rear of
the drum, rides in a plastic cup mounted on the rear wall of the dryer. I
bought the kit from appliance parts pro's, $24 delivered. I also replaced the
water lines to the washer while I had the stack pulled away from the wall.

Top of the dryer has spring clips at the front edge, hinge at the rear, YouTube
videos show the way.

Looks like this particular Kenmore was made by Frigidaire. Really a pretty
easy job, but took about half a day because I spent a lot of time cleaning up
17 years of accumulated lint and dust.

I did not (yet) replace the nylon strips that the front of the drum rides on,
that'll be next.

[MBZ] Fw: New Ignition Switch Issue 95 E300D

Just to let you know I finally got the tumbler out, but accomplished it by
cutting the protective sleeve. I have gotten the tumbler to rotate outside of
the housing once our twice and found one broken piece of pot metal, but would
like to take it further apart to see what is really mucking the operation. I
will order a new key and tumbler set and sleeve, as the 190 steering lock that
I have, doesn’t have the transmission lock feature.

Should have pullled it while you could still turn it. Try giggling it while
turning to see if you can get it to move one last time to pull it out then

Those WW II bomber crews have always been my heroes. I've never
thought I

could be as tough and brave as they were to endure the cold, noisy,
un-pressurized cabins and wearing oxygen masks for hours on every
mission and
keep going back day-after-day for months against relentless fighter
attacks.

By contrast, 72 of my bombing missions to Vietnam were very routine and
flown in relative comfort of "shirt-sleeve" conditions of pressurized,
heated cabin against un-defended targets and very little chance of any
opposition. It was only on the last 6 of my missions over a period of 11
days that mine got "very interesting." Just like those guys of WW II,
though, we mere merely doing our duty and what we were very well
trained to

do with confidence and faith that we would survive. 'Always sad to
remember, though, that 30 of my B-52 comrades did not survive.

Still lots of flooding in South part of town along Neuse River and
along a creek

through town. Many people in shelters. Some areas still without power.
Don't know the number, but the number of homes and businesses in the
county (Wayne) is very significant.

That's awesome. I think you are pretty much a badass for strapping on
a Buff and flying into some nasty stuff, but these guys were even more
badass, not having "modern" gadgets and radar and sensors and such,
and flying beat-up patched-up planes on those missions every day.
Seems like air war then was a lot less "stand-off" than it is today,
again not to diminish in any way the guys who do that stuff now but it
just seems like it so much more up close and visceral. Just hearing
some stories from my pilot neighbor was hair-raising (and I have no
hair! Well, I guess I had a bit then...). I think I mentioned too,
my uncle was on the USS Bush that got kamikazeed and sunk, he survived
after floating around in the water for quite a while. "It was just
what we did" he says. unh huh. I think he just passed 90yo and is
still going pretty strong so I guess he had some good mojo going on
that day too.

BTW how are y'all doing up there with the flooding? Saw some pics of
Kinston and around there and it was really bad. Real bad down here in
SC in some places too, right now the rivers are flooding from all the
runoff, that takes several days to work itself down to the ocean.
Full moon high tides this weekend are not helping. Seems like it is
even worse than a year ago.

The movie, "Twelve O'Clock High," is based on his actions. His part,

Rather than having to compete with generic manufacturers, and get

remember, though, that 30 of my B-52 comrades did not survive.

Still lots of flooding in South part of town along Neuse River and along a
creek

through town. Many people in shelters. Some areas still without power.
Don't know the number, but the number of homes and businesses in the county
(Wayne) is very significant.

That's awesome. I think you are pretty much a badass for strapping on a
Buff and flying into some nasty stuff, but these guys were even more
badass, not having "modern" gadgets and radar and sensors and such, and
flying beat-up patched-up planes on those missions every day. Seems like
air war then was a lot less "stand-off" than it is today, again not to
diminish in any way the guys who do that stuff now but it just seems like
it so much more up close and visceral. Just hearing some stories from my
pilot neighbor was hair-raising (and I have no hair! Well, I guess I had
a bit then...). I think I mentioned too, my uncle was on the USS Bush
that got kamikazeed and sunk, he survived after floating around in the
water for quite a while. "It was just what we did" he says. unh huh. I
think he just passed 90yo and is still going pretty strong so I guess he
had some good mojo going on that day too.

BTW how are y'all doing up there with the flooding? Saw some pics of
Kinston and around there and it was really bad. Real bad down here in SC
in some places too, right now the rivers are flooding from all the runoff,
that takes several days to work itself down to the ocean. Full moon high
tides this weekend are not helping. Seems like it is even worse than a
year ago.

The tach in my 1983 300TD runs only briefly after I fiddle with it
(stuffing something under the retaining collar to tighten the contacts).
I'm thinking it's either the gauge in the instrument cluster or slightly
corroded pins in the sending unit. Easiest option would be to apply Deoxit
which I don't currently own.

Question: Which type of DeOxit should I purchase that suits this
application? Is it OK to spray into the femaie housing or just onto the
male pin assembly? There are several types on ebay:

Unfortunately, no.

They’ve always been pretty much unobtainium in the States, as MBUSA didn’t
offer them for long as accessories. I don’t think they were popular enough to
warrant offering them, so they dropped them. Tarek (SN) had a set of them that
came with the S500 coupe, so when it went to the big knackers in the sky I
removed them and put them on the sedan. He picked them up in the UK or
someplace in western Europe.

I had an offer of $300 for the set a while back. Turned it down.

Mine is different, the cap is replaced by one with a long, slender metal tube
that has a tiny cap on top:

The one pictured in your ad will work just as well. However, I would not use
the attached brush directly on dirty contacts, as it will introduce
contaminants into the bottle. The compound appears to be the same as what I
use. I see an ad above this listing for $15.25 as opposed to the $21.09 in this
ad. That seems reasonable enough.

Re: [MBZ] Source for Dual Section Capacitor

2016-10-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Mine is working OK, but since capacitors age and eventually fail, I want to be
proactive and see if I can source replacements. I’m also wondering if it would
work better with newer caps in it - I don’t have a point of reference, but
figured I could swap them in to see if they made a difference.

I assumed the capacitors worked with the pump to make it vibrate. I’ve got to
pop the cover again and trace out the circuit to see.

I can’t imagine the red light would be difficult to source. I don’t have mine
open right now but next time I do I’ll take a look.

Good lessons for all of us in boffem.

When I was growing up, I'd occasionally hear something about Frank
Armstrong, or his nieces and nephews at school with me would sometimes
mention "Uncle Frank," and I knew that he had been a bomber pilot, but I
didn't realize who he really was and what he had done until I had been in
B-52's for a few years.

On the late afternoon in about '48, when I met 'im, I was riding my bike
past his sister's (our local postmaster, Mrs. Valentine) house and saw
several family members sitting on the front porch. I waved to them, and
Mrs. Valentine called to me, "Hey, Wilton, come and meet my brother, Gen.
Armstrong." He was very friendly and encouraging for me to do well in
school. I assured him that I would. Mrs. Valentine already knew me fairly
well and told him, "Oh, he is already."

As you know, I have the same Omre Automatica espresso machine. Older
Automatica pumps were rotary pumps and the operator controls are
buttons not 5-position rotary switch that we have. Our (DanP & DanG
aka mao) Automatica is vibratory pump. Your Automatica is not
operating properly? My Automatica does espresso but steam for milk is
very choppy and ineffective. I thought the vibe pump was self
contained, not pulsed with circuitry as you suggest?

Another Automatica question for you is the red light when the machine
is turned on. My red light is kaput. Find replacement for me...
since you have yours open now?

Here is a video of the Automatica lever killer:

Re: [MBZ] Deoxit question

2016-10-15 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I have used several different packagings of Deoxit. Deoxit has several
different compounds too. I am talking about the red stuff. My experience
with the spray is that the spray fails when only a small portion of the
contents were gone. My technique when the contacts are accessible is to use
the dropper container and q-tips. I saturate the head of a q-tip with the
liquid, then rub the contact to remove the oxidation. If the female contact
can't be cleaned this way I make and break the contacts several times with a
bit of the liquid on the male contact. This has worked well for me.

Subject: [MBZ] Deoxit question

The tach in my 1983 300TD runs only briefly after I fiddle with it
(stuffing something under the retaining collar to tighten the contacts).
I'm thinking it's either the gauge in the instrument cluster or slightly
corroded pins in the sending unit. Easiest option would be to apply Deoxit
which I don't currently own.

Question: Which type of DeOxit should I purchase that suits this
application? Is it OK to spray into the femaie housing or just onto the
male pin assembly? There are several types on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=deoxit&_sop=1

All of the Chrysler vehicles are using that as of 2017 as well as a lot of GM
vehicles. I can say for sure having been in some 2017 GM vehicles with it this
summer it does not cool near as well as r134, takes a long time to start
cooling and does not get as cold.

Seymour Johnson AFB, NC.

Lt. Gen. Frank Armstrong, from my hometown, Nashville, NC (born 15 or
20 mi. away, but claimed Nashville, where his sister lived), helped
establish 8th Air Force in England in 1942.

The movie, "Twelve O'Clock High," is based on his actions. His part,
Frank Savage in the movie, is played by Gregory Peck.

I met 'im sitting on his sister's front porch one afternoon in 'bout
1948.

Thanks for posting! I think there is a museum for The Mighty Eighth
off of I-95 down in Florida. I've often been tempted to stop there,
that temptation is now greater.

Was an bombing mission which incurred record losses, and Oct 14 became
know as Black Thursday.

http://www.historynet.com/world-war-ii-eighth-air-force-raid-on-schweinfurt.htm

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Raid_on_Schweinfurt

60 of 291 planes were lost, and another 17 were so badly damaged that
they were scrapped ofter the mission. 22% of the men on the raid
were lost.

Remember today, the men of the USAAF who flow those missions and
especially those who were lost.

You have to be able to turn the key to release the big plug off the
back. You are probably going to have to break the connector or cut the
wires and splice in the connector from the other car which will be a
big pain on the ass.

Someday, an EV that has similar historic character of our W123 today -
that might be nice, perhaps. EV works in a city, but will not have

provides. So... someday, something other than outlawed fossil-fuel
internal-combustion or EV will be used for transportation, perhaps.
Or not. We can deal with all things, correct? Is this better?

Re: [MBZ] Deoxit question

BTDT numerous times, and in each case the tach worked maybe for half a day
at most before quitting again. An annoying little voice inside me keeps on
telling me it's the instrument cluster gauge but I really don't want to go
there. For $15 I will throw the dice and try the deoxit.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Answers the Trolley Problem

2016-10-15 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The correct answer requires the correct question:

If my autonomous car kills a child, who gets sued and where are the deep
pockets to collect said certain judgement?

If you "reside" in an autonomous car.. are you legally in control of it?
Did YOU program the decision making of said car, which failed to recognize
it was killing said children.. ?

Once case law is established in such a suit and there will be a suit...
what precedents will be set?

Hypothetical legal basis: If you are drunk, choose to hire a taxi to drive
you home, and are a passenger in said taxi that strikes and kills said
child... are YOU, as passenger liable? Or, is the taxi driver and the cab
company, who holds the commercial insurance policy for said cab?

Is there a legal comparative between a hired taxi, and an autonomous car?

Legal eagles on this board care to try that case in hypothetical?

Re: [MBZ] 73 years ago today

2016-10-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
That's awesome. I think you are pretty much a badass for strapping on a
Buff and flying into some nasty stuff, but these guys were even more
badass, not having "modern" gadgets and radar and sensors and such, and
flying beat-up patched-up planes on those missions every day. Seems
like air war then was a lot less "stand-off" than it is today, again not
to diminish in any way the guys who do that stuff now but it just seems
like it so much more up close and visceral. Just hearing some stories
from my pilot neighbor was hair-raising (and I have no hair! Well, I
guess I had a bit then...). I think I mentioned too, my uncle was on
the USS Bush that got kamikazeed and sunk, he survived after floating
around in the water for quite a while. "It was just what we did" he
says. unh huh. I think he just passed 90yo and is still going pretty
strong so I guess he had some good mojo going on that day too.

BTW how are y'all doing up there with the flooding? Saw some pics of
Kinston and around there and it was really bad. Real bad down here in
SC in some places too, right now the rivers are flooding from all the
runoff, that takes several days to work itself down to the ocean. Full
moon high tides this weekend are not helping. Seems like it is even
worse than a year ago.

You have to be able to turn the key to release the big plug off the back. You
are probably going to have to break the connector or cut the wires and splice
in the connector from the other car which will be a big pain on the ass.

I just found out the MacDill AFB, right here in Tampa, has a B-29 on static
display. Can’t get to it, though, as it’s on the base proper and not in a
public area.  Dang.

Re: [MBZ] New Ignition Switch Issue 95 E300D

2016-10-15 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
You have to have the switch in the 1 position (Run) for the plug to pull
out.

Robert Massmann via Mercedes

Well I got the steering lock out steering colum. I ground the locking
pin until the assembly came out since I couldn't get the key to turn.
Semi good news is that the same lock mechanism is in my dead 87 "190
2.5 Turbo diesel.

Question should I be able to pull the connector plug on the end of the
ignition switch with the tumbler still in place or will I have to
start cutting.

The plan is to use the steering lock and tumbler from the 190 and get
a matching tumbler for the E300D, so I do not have to dig into and
change all the locks over!

You are welcome. You might check out Martin Caiden's books. One is
called Black Thursday. It is about this raid. I think he also wrote
The Thousand Plane Raid about the first allied raid with 1000 planes. I
read all that stuff 45-50 years ago. Anything the school libary had or
whatever I could get form scholastic or the local bookstore about WWII
air and naval actions. Run SIlent, Run Deep is a terrific book also.
