I bought a1983 Subaru Wagon off of the showroom floor from Evan Mecham
(Google him sometime...another AZ whack-job). I was by far the best
non-German car I've ever had. It shared the garage with my '68 280 SE.
Ahhh...those were the gays.

Re: [MBZ] Jill the felon

2016-11-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
So I have this buddy in Houston who has a good friend (was his college
roommate) who made a huge pile of money in trading oil futures or some
such. Not Soros kind of money but enough to be in the club. (I met
this guy once, very quiet and humble guy, very nice.) This guy has a
house in the Hamptons, apparently next door to Soros and Roger Waters,
or right in the same address range. My buddy goes up every summer for a
coupla days to visit the friend. The friend has a big lawn party and a
dinner party another night, invites the various swells in the 'hood. So
my buddy has had dinner with Soros and Waters a few times, he says Soros
always shows up with a comely young "niece." He says Waters is a pretty
crazy guy, one evening after much food, drink, and mirth, he invites my
buddy to go to Rio with him, like right now. He calls up his pilot and
says wheels up in an hour, we're going to Rio. My buddy had to decline
due to prior obligations (and the concern about getting stranded in Rio
with this crazy guy). Various other notables also attend these affairs,
but he finds Soros to be the most intriguing -- completely amoral.

But the school activated their Active Shooter Warning System, a
couple of
minutes AFTER a campus cop shot the perpetrator dead, and therefore
declare

their warning system a success.

The perp's biggest mistake was in hitting the fire alarm to get
everybody
outside where he could run them down with his car. In doing so, he
summoned the
police BEFORE he started the attack, and got himself shot about one
minute after
putting his car in drive. If he'd waited for classes to end, he could
have
depended on the normal police response time and bought himself 2-3
more minutes.

It is pretty good so far for me. I do not drive that far or often. Keep it
locked up, and have yet to need to file a claim. Agreed value is multiples of
what normal insurance was, but less than half the cost. Restrictions on who
can drive it and what you can do with it. No commercial usage, but you can do
club sanctioned events and driving things

It is a half gallon (64oz) container for holding fluids. Some people use it

[MBZ] OT: VW 2012 PASSAT RIP

2016-11-28 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
We're nearing the end of the VW Diesel-gate buy back process, and now have
the Subaru Legacy that's replacing it, so I thought it was time to add up a
few numbers.

We drove the Passat 34115 miles in 54 months and burned 826.4 gallons of
Diesel fuel. That's an average of 41.3 MPG. There are only two cross
country trips in that, and a couple of shorter trips (Tulsa and mid
Arkansas), so most of the miles are 25 mile round trips into town for
groceries, etc.

The Legacy cost us $3,000 after the VW buy back (yes, I'm counting chickens
before they hatch). We're trading Diesel goodness for all wheel drive and
electronic gismo's out the a$$. SWMBO really likes the back-up camera,
blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert features. I must admit
that they did help a lot when leaving a crowded parking lot this afternoon
- telling me traffic was coming from both sides as I was trying to back out
of a parking space before I saw them. So far, the Subaru is a bit more
comfortable than the VW was, but neither holds a candle to an old MB.

The newer MB's are still just too expensive for someone who wants to spend
his $'s on airplanes :-), hence the Subaru. Time will tell whether it was a
good decision.

The 300D has the early style (crush washer, 1 O-ring) hollow bolt on the fuel
filter.  Since I changed it this past weekend the crush washer is seeping.
It’s an aluminum crush washer, I might add.

Didn’t someone have issues with this in the past?  I’ve researched this and
found that a bunch of people are forgoing the crush washer for a composite
plumbing washer easily sources at Ace Hardware among other places.

I know you can update the filter head to the later two O-ring version, but I
really don’t want to mess with that.

I’ll get one of the composite washers tomorrow after work.  I may take the
aluminum crush washer off and lap it with some emery paper and a piece of
glass to flatten it out.  For some reason I was thinking there was an issue
with annealing them?

For now I’ll leave the car parked and drive the 350SDL tomorrow.  Nice to have
a backup.

Details details The university's kook-eye warning system worked.
It kept everyone where they were until noon, at which time the classes

The fact that all that was AFTER the event was over and the some ali kid

But the school activated their Active Shooter Warning System, a couple of
minutes AFTER a campus cop shot the perpetrator dead, and therefore
declare

their warning system a success.

The perp's biggest mistake was in hitting the fire alarm to get everybody
outside where he could run them down with his car. In doing so, he
summoned the
police BEFORE he started the attack, and got himself shot about one
minute after

putting his car in drive. If he'd waited for classes to end, he could have
depended on the normal police response time and bought himself 2-3
more minutes.

This is an interesting map that shows geographic distribution of the vote
winners by county:

http://i0.wp.com/metrocosm.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/
election-2016-county-map.png?w=600

The article with it is somewhat interesting but seems to have a bit of
bias:

http://metrocosm.com/election-2016-map-3d/

I saw a comment from someone that said if the blue areas prevailed it
would be sorta like a "Hunger Games" kind of situation where the elite
metro areas basically controlled the rest of the country, the residents of
whom would basically have no say in the matter if not for the electoral
college arrangement.

The article says:

As with most maps that represent information using color, red/blue
election maps are great for communicating categorical data (in this case,
/which candidate won county X?/). But they don’t do a very good job
conveying magnitude (/how
important is county X compared to other counties?/).

For example, *L.A. County * alone has a population of over
*10 million*. That’s more than the combined population of 10 entire states.
*Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota,
Alaska, North Dakota, Vermont,* and *Wyoming* together have a total
population of just over *9 million*?

Which says that LA County could basically be the key to a Clinton "win"
since the margin is like 1.5M votes at this point, and I think her margin
was larger than that in LA County? And LA County would basically negate
the votes of 10 states that comprise a very large geographic area though
low-density.

[MBZ] OT - Insurance

2016-11-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
With the youngest son heading out of the house in the near future, I’ve been
giving some serious thought to reviewing our insurance situation, primarily
auto and umbrella coverages. For years we’ve used mainline insurers, State
Farm for 30 years until they started screwing us, then to Allstate where we’re
currently at and happy with the service and coverage.

That being said, I’m wondering if I should shop this as well as consider
talking to an independent agent. While I am not keen on feeding the corporate
animals, I also have some concerns about spreading my coverages across multiple
insurers and whether or not that savings will justify it.

My concern of late is that we seem to be paying an inordinate amount of money
for our umbrella policy, and I’m not sure why. It could be due to the
youngster’s presence over time and I just haven’t paid that much attention to
it, but I want to be sure.

I would be interested in hearing anyone’s experiences in this vein, positive or
negative.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel purge.

2016-11-28 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I just did this yesterday. Here's how I did it:

Two pieces of clear hose about 18" long. New primary (inline) and secondary
(spin on) filters.

Removed old secondary filter. Filled new secondary filter with Diesel Purge and
installed.

Removed "cigar" hose (return line) at the filter head and clamped short piece
of hose in its place.

Removed supply hose with old primary filter at injection pump. Used old primary
filter as a hook to hold it and supply line up and out of the way, higher than
tank so no fuel would flow.

Got new inline filter and clamped it to piece of hose. Plugged outlet end into
short hose on injection pump inlet.

Poured remainder of Diesel Purge into clear bottle. Inserted both hoses into
bottle, making sure hose going to injection pump was all the way to the bottom
of the bottle. Pumped primer to make sure any air was purged out of supply
line.

Started engine and revved throttle up and down while Diesel Purge was consumed.
Ran until there was almost nothing left in bottle. Shut off engine.

Reconnected hoses and tightened clamps. Pour remaining Diesel Purge into fuel
tank.

That should be “effects".

Almost forgot - put the brand new MB carpeted floor mats in after spraying them
with a can of ScotchGard I found in the garage. They’re beautiful, but I know
they won’t stay that way. Darn.

Going to order the K1 shift kit from the dealer today so that I can install it
next weekend when I do the filter and fluid. Got a set of engine mounts to do,
too. Might try those out one evening this week if I feel up to it.

Looking forward to getting out on the road this morning.

Happy Cyber Monday, all!
