[MBZ] Welcome New Member

2016-12-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Kyle Arola has just subscribed to the Okie List.

Kyle lives up in north central Florida near Manfred. I saw his post on
Benzworld last week looking for a nice 300TD to replace his soon to be returned
VW diesel and reached out to him about our list and Manfred’s proximity, which
really worked out well.

Kyle has already paid Manfred a visit so he could test drive a diesel wagon,
and he’s planning on attending the Manfred “Q” in January.

Welcome, Kyle!

Thanks Dan!

Had a problem with the vintage Java version and my Win10 machine, had to
add some security exceptions and such. The direct sign up link from Manfred
worked like a charm to register!

Looking forward the the meet in January and it is on the same day we sell
back our VW! WH!

We are really searching for a 300TD Wagon now, the 81-85 version, and will
consider cars that are not projects and are solid, correct, and fully
functional. I know, not too demanding. hahaha!

If anyone is considering selling their wagon, we will love and care for
your baby properly!

Re: [MBZ] more 300TDs

2016-12-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
A prepurchase inspection is a must. Even if you go through a few hundred
dollars to find the right car, it’s money well spent, especially since you’re
relatively new to the marque.

Fortunately these cars aren’t terribly complex, so the things that will be most
important t check are rust and rust. Door bottoms, bottom edge of the rear
hatch, lower corners of rear window, jack points, etc., are all critical places
to look for damage, and ones that you will use to rule out a potential addition
to your garage.

After that I would focus on systems such as the SLS (leveling) as parts of it
are expensive to repair/replace. From there on out the rest are pretty easy to
deal with and not deal breakers in most situations. Central locking is a piece
of cake to troubleshoot and repair as are most electrical issues. ACC
(automatic climate control) is also pretty straightforward and will most likely
have you replacing leaking vacuum actuators, none of which are terribly
expensive, maybe $50.

Post your findings here if you talk to or check out a car - there are a lot of
current and former W123 owners around with many years of experience.

Well the first 45 minutes of the drive is 80mph on the turnpike then 75 the
rest of the way till you hit the hills then it's 70. I would take oil with me

I did just change to diff oil in my 97 with M1. Probably just imagining but it
seems quieter. I bought a case of it on Amazon so will be doing all the cars.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Windows?

2016-12-20 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
While the *use* of Windows 10 isn't that different from 7, and as an OS is
fairly stable and complete, I have to stress on forcing the thing out of
auto-update mode. I have come home to one system running 10 that was doing
a compile, only to find out it had failed because the system had rebooted
right in the middle of a job. A POS system with a non-profit I help out at
once couldn't do work for an hour and a half as it booted, said it needed
updates, then forcibly rebooted without any concern to the business it just
took down. Microsoft has gone the wrong direction on this one, and has
forgotten that this system is *my* system. I do not lease it from
Microsoft, I do not have a Desktop as a Service. I have systems I need to
run when I have work I need to do.

Application wise, however, I haven't found anything third-party that
refuses to run outright. To the underlying software it isn't that different
from 8, relatively speaking, so if it runs on 8 it should run on 10. My
game system is currently running 10.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Windows?

2016-12-20 Thread Kyle Arola via Mercedes
Totally correct, always set the advanced update settings to "notify to
schedule restart" and that disables the autoreboot that you experienced.

Win10 is faster, lighter, and takes up less space on your hard drive. All
good reasons to update. Also, in 2020 Win7 drops out of microsofts support.

Yep sad to see that end for sure! Well, you may as well wait until you get
a new machine and it will come with the Win10. I dont feel that there is
much sense buying something for an older computer that has a greater chance
of a hardware failure.

I don't know if I would have told him to RTV the ends of the
pipe. I can see too much RTV put on there and then breaking off
and getting into the radiator with disastrous results to same.

From: clay

An Update.

He tried to run the car in the freeze with a generic NAPA hose
while awaiting the special order proper hose. A little learning
event over the past week with much discussion about how to get
the radiator unfrozen. Today he got the hose, temp was near
freeze, and he put it on. Drove to work and on the way home
there was steam coming out of the hood.

When it is not your car, money, or screw up, a person can be very
calm in talking through bonehead moves. Seems the hose got put
on upside down and the power steering pump wore through the hose.
Now he needs to order another and figure out how to patch this
one to run the car long enough to get the new hose put on
correctly. I advised him to find a metal pipe of the proper OD
to fit the ID of the hose, cut at the new hole, RTV the pipe ends
and slip the hose over. Then make a sleeve out of his destroyed
original hose, RTV the seam at the split, RTV both sides of the
hose, and slip the hose over, then clamp it all up. Install
properly, fill it all up, and be on the way.

hahaha! I was hopeful that I had not disappointed Curley to that point

So is it worth flying to California to buy a "perfect" 123 wagon for 16K?
Opinions please. I do know there is no such thing as a perfect car,
but, you can get it pretty close. It is a guy on peachparts and he is
going to be sending me pictures. bwhitmore is the user name. He doesnt
have a gallery so I couldnt see the car. Here is what he sent me.

*Kyle - I have a 1983 300TD wagon that fits your description however I am
in Southern California and my price is $16K. The car is white with Palomino
interior with 137, 545 miles. Everything (AC, cruise, SLS, engine trans,
door locks, etc.) works perfectly. I am the second owner of the car which
was sold new by Stahl Motors Mercedes in Monterey, Ca (now called Mercedes
of Monterey). I have all service records since new plus all of the original
manuals for the car. The car is 95% original paint with no rust ever. The
hood and the small panels below the headlights were painted due to stone
chips. The interior is immaculate with a no crack dash and perfect Zebrano
wood. The carpets and seats (MBTex) are like new including the cargo area
carpet. Work on the car within the last year includes: New AC
compressor/receiver drier/expansion valve Rebuilt transmission New, genuine
MBZ vacuum pump New genuine MBZ timing chain and guides/tensioner New
genuine MBZ SLS accumulators New tires I am a W123 enthusiast and also own
a W123 coupe and sedan. The work mentioned above (with the exception of the
AC work and transmission) was done as part of my routine maintenance
schedule. The car has received regular 3,000 mile oil changes along with
fuel filters every 6,000 miles and valve adjustment every 8,000 miles. If
interested, I am glad to send pictures. Thanks. Bill Whitmore*

I have a HP color scanjet 3200C I am getting ready to pitch, simply
because it needs parallel cabling, and I don't seem to have the right

with a near-current OS.

Before I pitch it, I was wondering if anyone has seen or made something
useful out of used scanner parts.

Rich or Curt come to mind as people with creative minds and propensity
to tinker with stuff.

Maybe there is an opportunity to make something from it that has not
been done before! a maker article?

So put on the thinking caps and burn the oogle wires..

What can we do with a workin' scanner? (works to the tune of "what do

$16k for that car is crackhead money, in my opinion. I would also be suspect
of an 83 with only 137k on the clock having a rebuilt transmission. That’s
way, way below the norm. I could see maybe $10k or $12k, but $16k is pretty
outrageous in my opinion.

Don’t dismiss the random user, as sometimes they can be “the one”. My 1990

cred there that I was satisfied after talking to him a number of times that the
car was represented truthfully, and it was.

I do recognize that that can certainly happen, and I am willing to accept
it if it happens to me! My problems are California is a really long way

only worth 10k and tried to screw a new (caveat emptor) enthusiast over...
I don't like that part of the deal.

Everything is negotiable. If not, the seller has unrealistic expectations that
you’re not going to overcome. In that case, thank them and move on.

The problem is that you have put a number out already, so people know what your
top end is. Had you not done so you could have easily responded to the offer
by telling them that the car sounds really nice but it’s out of your budget
range. That forces them to respond with a counter if they’re motivated to sell
or don’t have unrealistic expectations.

Sorry.

Re: [MBZ] Oh Andrew! Was: Welcome New Member

2016-12-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The way I have always approached this has been to explain that I am looking for
the best reasonably priced example of the car that doesn’t need repairs. No
basket cases, project cars, etc., something I can get into, turn the key and go
with minimal concerns. In my case I want the best cosmetics as I don’t do body
work nor do I want to pay for it. Minor mechanical or electrical issues can be
present as long as it’s clear they are something that I can resolve without
major effort.

Believe me, you always want to go for the best possible example of the car you
can get for your money. Fixer-uppers are not what you should buy if you’re
looking for a daily driver right out of the gate, and I know this isn’t the
case for you.

For example, I really wanted a long wheelbase W126 diesel. I paid between
$4k-$5k for the 1990 350SDL I now have. It’s not perfect, nor was it when I
bought it. However, I got a really good, solid car with a history I was
comfortable with and few, if any, issues, all of which were very minor and
easily resolved by me. I didn’t want a garage queen, parade car or concours
entry. It’s far from perfect but the average non-MB owner would look at it and
say it’s a really nice car. As an MB owner I’m far more discerning and I know
what to look for, but I didn’t pay for perfection.

What you are saying makes perfect sense, and which is why I would prefer to
get a car from someone who knows what it is and has done the work on it to
keep it running reliably and take the advice of people who know these

Since this is hopefully the last car I buy for 10+ years, I just have to

That one sounds almost too good to be true. Valve adjust every

was sold new by Stahl Motors Mercedes in Monterey, Ca (now called Mercedes

manuals for the car. The car is 95% original paint with no rust ever. The
hood and the small panels below the headlights were painted due to stone
chips. The interior is immaculate with a no crack dash and perfect Zebrano
wood. The carpets and seats (MBTex) are like new including the cargo area

genuine MBZ SLS accumulators New tires I am a W123 enthusiast and also own

Re: [MBZ] Oh Andrew! Was: Welcome New Member

2016-12-20 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I do not see where he tells you how many miles it has on it in total.

I also suggest that $16K US is pretty big dollars for an old station wagon.
I know I have recently suggested that the folks on here are a bunch of
bottom feeders who think they should be able to buy wonderful MBs for
$500 and that they should be happy that prices appear to be going up
finally, but I have to wonder about paying that sort of money for a car
this old that is intended to be a daily driver.
What is book value for something like that. If it gets wrecked, will
insurance cover that sort of cost? I note recent comments about
insurance suggest you can insure it for whatever you basically think it
is worth but I believe that was for classic cars that are not daily drivers.
Last but not least, I wonder what your ability might be to re-sell for
big money if it turns out not to be your "cup of tea".
I think I would be looking for a less expensive car and one closer to
home. If you fly out to CA to get it you may be reluctant to pass on it
even if it is not as good as you hoped it might be.
Look for one in Florida that you can run by Dan before you finalize the
deal. He seems to have an ability to find good ones.

2016-12-20 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
He might have gotten hosed on a rebuilt trans for a B2 piston or something.
If he's got dealer records from day 1, he should be able to prove the odometer.
Then it's up to the market to decide what a clean well maintained low mileage
car is worth, but for 123 sedans I've been seeing 90kmi cars for a lot less than
$16k. Wagons and coupes are of course a different story.

There was a coupe recently that we had a 'guess the auction price' contest on
last week. I was the lowest guess at $9xxx and it sold for $7200.

This is so helpful! I really do NOT want to get taken to the cleaners on a
car, and that is why my first inclination was to meet people in the "club"
and attempt to get a wagon from someone known, or at least suspected, of
loving their car!

Aim higher! I have had my 200D (110) for 44 years, and the 240D (123)

years as of Dec 7, 2016.

so, how many miles have you put on these over the years you have had them?

I have had my 300D for 11 years but have only put about 12000 miles on it.
The MB is a hobby toy and not driven much except in summer and then not
every day.

I had a 68 Chevy C10 for something like 23 years but only put about the
same number of miles on it.
The truck was a sort of backup 3rd vehicle used to haul stuff around
town. In its later years, it was left out at the lake and not driven at all.
I would have kept it but it needed paint and I did not want it to just
rust away so I sold it to someone who would work on it.
